    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- St John's-Vandy, UNLV-UCLA are two opening round games in Maui Classic in November; Wake Forest-Indiana-Kansas are also in this solid tournament.

-- How much will Tom Brady play in preseason? New England exhibition games will be interesting, as far as which QBs play how much.

-- Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones had hip replacement surgery, will be at training camp for the start of another football season. We hope he is feeling better.

-- Cole Hamels can be traded to nine teams without his consent: both NYC teams, Dodgers, Cubs, Braves, Cardinals, Padres, Nationals and Rangers.

-- Troy Tulowitzki would have become a 10-nd-5 man next year, so he could have vetoed trades at that point, which is why he got traded this year.

-- Sonny Gray blanked the Dodgers 2-0 last night; he is very, very good.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Looking back at my Las Vegas trip

    13) Las Vegas is an assembly line of fun; it never stops; it just pauses for a while and different people get on and off. My trip this time was among the best I've had, for a variety of reasons. There is an awful lot to do there, for sure-- you need more than 24 hours a day there, or at least a vacation after the vacation to catch up on sleep. .

    12) Best sportsbook in Las Vegas is at the Westgate Hotel on Paradise; good chairs, most every game on TV (Dodgers are blacked out in Las Vegas, for whatever reason), tons of wagering options and a very good deli in the back. They're re-doing it now and will supposedly have skyboxes when work is finished (in time for footballl season?)

    11) Don't be this guy: There was a guy there who must've bet a ton of games; every time a baserunner on one of his teams was going to have a close play on the bases, he yelled and I mean yelled, "HIT THE DIRT!!!!" It was funny for about five minutes.

    10) In 'n Out remains America's finest fast food; what a gold mine those places are. Best milkshake I've ever had.

    9) For first time I can remember, gas is 18-20 cents a gallon more expensive in Las Vegas than here in beautiful downtown Colonie. $3.20 or so a gallon there.

    8) Adidas put on a great AAU tournament downtown at the spacious Cashman Center, where seven games were played at a time under one roof. Great fun; got to see kids from west of Mississippi play each other- there were a few teams from the east, but not a lot. Saw a team from Mississippi play a team from Oakland-- good stuff.

    7) Met some college coaches, all of whom were polite/cordial, even though some of them were probably wondering who the hell I was. Bobby Hurley is a good guy, but he looks weird in Arizona State colors. Same for Ben Howland and Mississippi State.

    6) I've told this story here before but it bears repeating: last summer, I'm watchng a game at Bishop Gorman HS, two very good teams playing. One coach takes his cell phone out of his pocket during the game, looks at it, then turns to the two people sitting right in front of me and says.........

"If you text me one more time, I'll never put him in!!!"

Welcome to modern coaching; it can be an insane world out there.

    5) Listened to Jim Boeheim and St Joe's coach Phil Martelli discuss Boeheim's son and daughter playing AAU ball- they're teenagers from what I can tell. Their conversation drifted into 100% basketball X's and O's, as well as recruiting stuff, ehich was oddly reassuring. Two veteran coaches talking about what they love-- basketball.

    4) Stayed at the SLS hotel (the old Sahara) this time; it has been redone and is kind of fancy, but I'm not a fancy guy. I wear sneakers and golf shirts, but SLS does have a 24-hour coffee shop, a 24-hour gift shop and a good sports bar by the sportsbook, though not really enough room to sit and watch the ballgames.

More of a young crowd, so the place is lively; they have concerts by their pool on the weekends which are very popular. I'd recommend SLS to younger visitors.

    3) My room was amazingly small, but well organized; great walk-in shower, way big enough, but very little closet/drawer space. All in all, I liked the room and I spend a lot of time in the room, since I'm write this fine article there every night.

    2) Had to ban myself from video poker; machines at SLS aren't nearly as loose as at South Point or even Planet Hollywood. Off-strip places are better to gamble at.

    1) Talked for two hours to a 90-year old former bookie/radio talk show host named Danny who had a ton of interesting stories and he hit a 3-team parlay while we were sitting there. He told me he booked games in LA for 20 years, he was married to a former centerfold for ten years ("Boy, could she spend money!!!") and was also a pilot in the service back in the day.

Now this is Vegas, so I have no idea if any of it was true, but it was fun to listen to.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bets

      Lookahead spot

The Toronto Argonauts have been wandering the CFL landscape for six weeks now, including this Monday’s road trip to Hamilton to play the rival Ti-Cats.

Thanks to the Pan Am Games taking over the Rogers Centre for the past month, the Argos play their first five games away from home, starting with a “home” game in Fort McMurray, Alberta against the Eskimos in Week 1 then trips to Saskatchewan, Calgary, and British Columbia.

Road-weary Toronto wraps this grueling stretch of sked in Hamilton, with the welcoming domed confines of the “Sky Dome” just one week away. The Argonauts have been a solid wager, covering in each of those first four games, but could get caught looking ahead to a long-awaited home opener versus the Rough Riders the following Saturday. Books have Toronto set as a 4-point pup in Hamilton this Monday.

      Letdown spot

The Alabama Crimson Tide aren’t wasting any time getting into the college football playoff mix, facing Wisconsin inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas in Week 1 of the season. Books have the Tide set as 10.5-point favorites for that opener and also have Alabama listed as early 9.5-point chalk hosting Ole Miss in Week 3. Sandwiched between these monster matchups is a “cake walk” versus Middle Tennessee in Week 2.

The Blue Raiders are nothing more than guinea pigs for Nick Saban’s squad – an opportunity to fine tune what didn’t work in Week 1 and try some new things out before Week 2. Middle Tennessee is one of the better C-USA programs but will be getting a boatload of points against the SEC super power.

With the Tide in letdown mode after Wisconsin (and in a lookahead to a revenge spot against Mississippi) – and not wanting to reveal too much of the playbook before facing the Rebels – Alabama could fall short of this lofty number. The Tide are just 3-8-1 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games.

      Schedule spot

The Cleveland Indians are looking to get away from home – and not for the usual reasons people want to leave Cleveland. The Tribe are mired in a nasty losing skid, dropping five in a row inside Progressive Field as of Tuesday. The Indians are currently hosting the Royals but must have their bags packed for a West Coast run starting Thursday.

Following a series finale with Kansas City Wednesday, Cleveland flies overnight to Oakland for four games with the Athletics then a three-game set with the Angels to round out the trip.

The Indians have actually been a solid wager away from Cleveland this season, with a 26-22 record as visitors – earning +3.52 units while burning up -23.14 units at home. The Tribe have a collective 3.46 ERA on the road - fourth lowest in the bigs. That pitching performance puffs up to 4.46 at home.

Dogs cash in first games back after break

The WNBA returned from its All-Star Break with a pair of games Tuesday and underdogs cashed in both instances.

The Indiana Fever defeated the Connecticut Sun 75-73 cashing as 1-point road underdogs in the process, while the Phoenix Mercury beat the Chicago Sky 89-87, but it was the latter that cashed as 3.5-point dogs.

Dogs have been a solid bet all season long in the WNBA, posting a record of 61-39-1 against the spread heading into Wednesday's action.
