    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six most improved teams in 2015, according to Phil Steele's great magazine.........

    6) Temple-- 19 starters back; 15 seniors on defensive two-deep depth chart.

    5) Indiana-- Add RB Howard from UAB; he should be a big help.

    4) Pitt-- Narduzzi is Pitt's fifth head coach in this decade; unreal.

    3) Michigan-- I heard they hired a new coach-- is this true????

    2) Akron-- Went 5-7 LY despite being favored in nine of 12 games.

    1) Miami Fla-- Even with only one senior projected to start on offemse.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Last winter, the Padres jacked their payroll up from $90,636,600 LY to this year's $108,387,033; that increase brought expectations, which a 32-33 record didn't satisfy, so Monday, after 8.5 years in charge, manager Bud Black got fired.

    12) Angels won the 2002 World Series; three of Mike Scioscia's coaches from that year started this season as big league managers-- two have already been fired-- Ron Roenicke in Milwaukee and now Black (Joe Maddon is the third). Whether it is fair or not, the manager takes the hit for an underachieving team. Just the way it is.

    11) Padres GM AJ Preller is another Ivy League alum (Cornell) who has become the head of a big league organization; he was a frat brother of Texas GM Jon Daniels while at Cornell. Here is part of Preller's quote about the firing........

"At the end of the day this was the direction we wanted to go. I've evaluated him (Black) overall for eight months when I was looking at everything. I've seen inconsistencies, ups and downs. This team is not bottoming out or playing poorly. Just too much inconsistency. We have not played to the level we are capable of."

In other words, Preller is saying "I did MY JOB. They're underachieving!!!"

Elsewhere in this crazy world of ours.......
    10) White Sox scored zero or one run in 14 of their first 62 games.

    9) Anthoy Rizzo has already been hit by 15 pitches this year; he crowds the plate.

    8) Ichiro Suzuki is 34-115 with seven walks (one HBP) against John Lackey; the 123 plate appearances are the most of any active hitter against any active pitcher.

    7) Mets promoted Danny Muno to the majors five times this year and sent him back down five times; we talked few weeks ago how Muno's dad played football with Joe Montana in college-- my friend Joe from Yorktown Heights let me know that Muno's grandfather once served as Montana's agent-- now that must've been a good gig.

    6) Glad to see Chris Davis bunt for a hit against the shift last night; might've been the hardest bunt ever-- it landed on the chalk, five feet past third base. Joey Votto also bunted for a hit against the shift last night--- good for them.

    5) Cuban defector Yasmany Tomas can really hit, but his agent did him a disservice by hooking him up with an NL team-- he has no position to play. He should be with an American League team, where he could DH every day.

    4) Last two nights, I've heard TV announcers bash the A's over the Donaldson trade; Keith Hernandez did it last night, someone else on Sunday, can't remember who, since I watch too much TV. Here are the details of that trade........

Firstly, Donaldson is a bus driver, a great player who can "drive the bus" to wins; he helped the A's make the playoffs three years in a row, but he was getting expensive and expensive doesn't fly in Oakland, no matter how good you are. On November 28, A's traded Donaldson to Toronto for these four humans..........

-- Brett Lawrie is no Donaldson, but he's done OK at third base this year. hitting .272.
-- Kendall Graveman is 3-3, 4.22 in nine starts for Oakland, but has a 2.20 ERA in his last five starts and looks like a keeper.
-- Sean Nolin has a 1.77 ERA n his first five AAA starts this year; he had one dreadful start in the big leagues back in 2013.
-- Franklin Barreto is a 19-year old shortstop hitting .263 in A ball.

    3) Graveman/Nolin are projected as big league starting pitchers; ask someone who is a Red Sox fan if starting pitching is important. Pitching is more important than having a great third baseman- you cannot win without high quality pitching.

So my point is this: TV nitwits can jump on the pile and bash the A's, but they are strapped by payroll concerns-- the only way they can stay competitive is to stockpile young pitchers, its the only chance they have. This year is a disaster but maybe next year won't be- they need to get some more prospects when they sell off older players like Zobrist, Clippard and Kazmir in the next six weeks. It is their reality.

    2) Home plate umpire Marty Foster got drilled in the jaw by a foul ball last night and had to leave the Toronto-Mets game in the third inning; really a vicious blow that KO'd him after he finished that half inning. Umpires take a beating behind the plate; so do catchers. Hopefully Mr Foster will be back on the field soon.

    1) Freddie Freeman was 30 for his first 68 with runners in scoring position; wow!!!.

Making shots; it is that simple; Warriors are 34-83 from arc in their three series wins, 20-69 in two lossess. Golden State was 39-61 from line in last two games, after going just 7-12 in Game 3. Cleveland needs to attack hoop more; they were 15-21 on line last game, 12-35 on arc. Warriors played well once they started playing with sense of desperation; now the Cavaliers are desperate team. Cleveland was 16-62 from arc in last two games- they were 27-89 in first three games.

Mosgov had 28 points in Game 4, played 9 minutes Sunday; will he see the court in this game?

Golden State won 10 of its last 14 games with Cleveland; 11 of the 14 games were decided by 8+ points. Cavaliers are 14-5 so far in playoffs, Warriors are 15-5. Under is 11-3-1 in last 15 Golden State games, 3-0-1 in last four. Under is 6-1-1 in last eight series games. Golden State needs a faster-paced game to succeed in this series. .

Game of the Day: Warriors at Cavaliers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Cleveland Cavaliers (+4.5, 194.5)

        Warriors lead 3-2

The Golden State Warriors look to secure their first world title in 40 years when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers in Tuesday's Game 6 of the NBA Finals. Golden State has won the past two games, including Sunday's 104-91 victory, but Cleveland's LeBron James will be aiming for another stellar effort to force a Game 7 on Friday.

James had 40 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in Game 5 but his second triple-double of the series wasn't enough and now Cleveland's season lies on the brink. "You cope with it by understanding it's just one game and looking at the opportunity we have on Tuesday to force a Game 7," James said in his press conference. "Obviously, for myself, I want to do whatever it takes to help our team win, and I haven't been able to do that the last two games." Warriors guard Stephen Curry had a huge 37-point outing in Game 5 and is ready to close out the series. "We're confident. We're not getting ahead of ourselves," Curry said in his press conference. "In the locker room, if you walked in there was the exact same (feeling) after a regular-season win. But we know the sense of urgency of the moment."

        TV:
        9 p.m. ET, ABC

        LINE HISTORY:
Books initially opened the Cavs as 4.5-point home dogs, but that's since dropped down to +4.

        INJURY REPORT:
Warriors - S. Curry (probable). Cavaliers - K. Irving (out for season), K. Love (out for season), A. Varejao (out for season).

        ABOUT THE WARRIORS:
The regular-season MVP version of Curry was on display when he scored 17 points in the fourth quarter of Game 5 and was 7-of-13 from 3-point range for the contest. He struggled with his shooting early in the series -- the 5-for-23 effort in Game 2 was particularly distasteful -- and has made 18 3-pointers over the past three games while raising his series average to 26.2 points. "He had a tough first couple of games and he got going at the end of Game 3 in the fourth quarter and that's all it takes," Golden State coach Steve Kerr said in his press conference. "Steph makes a couple shots, he feels like he's got it rolling, and he's been great ever since."

        ABOUT THE CAVALIERS:
With Golden State playing a small lineup, Cleveland coach David Blatt opted to match it and turned center Timofey Mozgov into a spectator one game after Mozgov was sensational with 28 points and 10 rebounds. The Warriors are happy to play the faster pace and Blatt bristled when reporters repeatedly inferred he played into Golden State's hand by using Mozgov for just nine scoreless minutes. "Did I make a mistake?" Blatt said in his press conference. "Listen, when you're coaching a game, you've got to make decisions. I felt that the best chance for us to stay in the game and to have a chance to win was to play it the way that we played it. It's no disrespect to anyone, certainly not to Timo, who has done a great job for us."

        TRENDS:

*Under is 13-3-1 in Warriors last 17 overall.
*Under is 3-0-1 in Cavaliers last 4 overall.
*Warriors are 12-5 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
*Home team is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

        CONSENSUS:
Per Consensus, 61 percent of bets are on the underdog Cavs.

The basketball betting trend that keeps cashing

The under went 4-1-1 in six WNBA games on Sunday's board, keeping alive one of the hottest betting trends you may not know about.

Season to date, the Over/Under mark in the WNBA is 7-15-2, good enough for the under to cash at a rate of just over 68 percent.

The Washington Mystics (0-4 O/U), Connecticut Sun (0-3-1), San Antonio Stars (0-3) and Los Angeles Sparks (0-1-1) have yet to record an Over.

          There are four games Tuesday.
