NBA roundup: Pelicans move into eighth spot in West

NEW ORLEANS -- Forward Anthony Davis scored 23 of his game-high 29 points in the second half, including a running jumper in the lane and two critical free throws in the final 1:21, to power the New Orleans Pelicans to a 103-100 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night at the Smoothie King Center.

With the win, the Pelicans moved into the eighth playoff position in the Western Conference. New Orleans is a half-game ahead Oklahoma City for the final playoff spot in the West after the Thunder lost at home against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Pelicans trailed Golden State by 12 points at halftime, but they erased most of the lead with a 10-0 run to start the second half.

Guard Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 25 points.

    Clippers 102, Lakers 96

LOS ANGELES -- After three decades of lopsided results in favor of the Lakers, the battle of Los Angeles has belonged to the Clippers over the past three seasons, with this campaign being no exception. The Clippers completed the season-series sweep of the Lakers with a win at Staples Center.

The Clippers continued their quest for home court in the first round, moving to 53-26 to remain in fifth place in the West. That kept them half a game ahead of scorching hot San Antonio, who trounced the Thunder in Oklahoma City.

The Lakers sunk to 20-57, giving them the NBA's fourth-worst record.

    Spurs 113, Thunder 88

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Forward Kawhi Leonard scored 26 points to lead San Antonio over Oklahoma City.

The Spurs stretched their winning streak to eight games and now trail the idle Houston Rockets by only a game and half for second place in the Western Conference and the lead in the Southwest Division. The Thunder have lost four straight games and six of their last seven.

Guard Russell Westbrook led the Thunder with 17 points on 7-for-16 shooting. He also had six steals and four turnovers in 26 minutes of action.

    Hawks 96, Suns 69

ATLANTA -- Atlanta set a franchise mark for victories in a season with its 58th win. Forward DeMarre Carroll made all but one of his nine shots and the Hawks held Phoenix to 31.3 percent shooting while winning before the team's 22nd sellout in the past 25 games.

Guard Jeff Teague and forward Mike Muscala, filling in for Paul Millsap, joined Carroll with 16 points. Center Al Horford scored 14 and the Hawks shot 49.4 percent.

    Heat 105, Hornets 100

MIAMI -- Goran Dragic led a balanced effort with 28 points and five assists as Miami defeated Charlotte in a pivotal game in the race for one of the Eastern Conference's final playoff berths.

With Boston and Indiana idle, the Heat moved into ninth place and within a half game of the Celtics for the final playoff spot. Miami moved a half-game ahead of the Pacers.

    Kings 116, Timberwolves 111

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Forward Rudy Gay scored 33 points, and forward Omri Casspi added a career-high 31 as Sacramento beat Minnesota.

Gay, back after missing three games with concussion symptoms, shot 9-for-17 and also pulled seven rebounds as Sacramento snapped a five-game losing streak despite playing without center DeMarcus Cousins (foot).

Forward Kevin Martin led the Timberwolves with 37 points, matching his season best, and also added seven assists. However, he couldn't prevent Minnesota from losing its sixth consecutive contest.

Under bettors loving Grizzlies' current form

The Memphis Grizzlies have been on a hot run for Under bettors of late, going 0-5 Over/Under in their last five basketball games heading into Wednesday's matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Grizzlies are presently the sixth best Under bet in the league with a record of 32-43-2 season to date. The Grizz and Pelicans have played three times already this season and the O/U count is 2-1.

Oddsmakers have tabbed this matchup with the lowest total on Wednesday's board at 186.

Slumping offense has Suns cashing under tickets

The Phoenix Suns are still struggling to score and it has led to them cashing under tickets at a high rate, going 14-2 in their last 16 games.

Phoenix was humiliated by the Atlanta Hawks 96-69 Tuesday night. It was the eighth time in the last 14 games where the Suns scored 87 points or fewer and are averaging just 86 points per game over that span.

The Suns play their second game in as many days when they visit the Dallas Mavericks Wednesday night. The total is currently off the board.

Spurs continue to roll, cover eighth straight game

The San Antonio Spurs continue to roll, crushing the Oklahoma City Thunder 113-88 as 6-point road favorites for their eighth win and cover in a row.

The Spurs not surprisingly are doing what they always do, playing their best basketball leading up to the playoffs and bettors have been the benefactor. In addition to being 8-0 ATS in their last seven games the Spurs are 17-4 ATS in their last 21 games overall.

San Antonio is right back at it Wednesday night as they try for nine in a row when they visit the Rockets in Houston. The Spurs are currently favored by 5.5-points.

Heat still struggling to cover down the stretch

The Miami Heat managed to pull out a 105-100 win over the Charlotte Hornets Tuesday night, but failed to cover the spread once again.

The Heat, who were 6.5-point favorites last night, have been a team to fade down the stretch, failing to cover in five straight and in eight of their last 10. Miami is near the bottom of the ATS standing at 33-41-4.

Miami will try to end the skid Thursday when they host the Chicago Bulls.

Houston Rockets at San Antonio Spurs (-5.5, 208.5)

The San Antonio Spurs are racking up victories and will face another hot team in the visiting Houston Rockets in Wednesday’s opener of a back-to-back between the two teams. San Antonio pounded Oklahoma City on Tuesday for its eighth straight victory and 18th in the past 21 games.

Houston has won 10 of its past 12 games and sits in second place in the Western Conference by one game over the Memphis Grizzlies. Even before San Antonio dismantled the Thunder for the second time in 14 days, Rockets coach Kevin McHale was wary of the Spurs. “They’re a good team playing very well right now,” McHale told reporters. “They’re the defending champions and they’re healthy and on a roll. It will be a great test for us, especially in San Antonio.” The Spurs have won by an average of 20.9 points during their eight-game winning streak, have also won 19 of their last 21 home games and are just 1 1/2 games behind the Rockets in the West race.

Howard was 10-of-15 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds and is no longer looking tentative on the floor. “I feel pretty good,” Howard told reporters. “I got a little winded in the fourth quarter and it’s to be expected. I got to continue to look and continue to run and just get better in that area.”

ABOUT THE SPURS (52-26 SU, 40-36-2 ATS, 36-42 O/U): Small forward Kawhi Leonard matched his career high of 26 points Tuesday for the second straight game and he has scored 20 or more points in five of the past six contests. “Our offense is just rolling,” Leonard said in a postgame interview on TNT. “Turning the defense into offense, and guys on the team are looking for me and I’m just knocking them down.” Leonard is averaging 21.5 points, three steals and shooting 63.4 percent from the field over the past six games.

              Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Bobby Hurley is rumored to be frontrunner for the Arizona State job, after Jeff Capel turned ASU down. Sun Devils aren't using a search firm, might just be using a Duke alumni magazine to find coaching candidates.

-- Hawai'i hired St Mary's assistant Eran Ganot, who used to be a Rainbow aide; that seeems to count more at Hawai'i than at most schools.

-- Utah gave hoop coach Larry Kystkowiak a $2.4M a year contract; he's turned the Utes'program around in four years, as they moved up to the Pac-12.

-- Eastern Kentucky hired Mnnesota assistant Dan McHale, who comes off a Pitino coaching tree; Richard's, not his father's.

-- Why are the Bue Jays opening on the road? They play in a damn dome!!!!

-- Throws on intentional walks shouldn't count on pitch counts, but they do.

              **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

              13) 75-year old Jack Nicklaus stole the show at the Masters' par-3 tournament with a hole-in-one, his first ever at Augusta.

              12) When Hank Aaron hit his 715th homer on April 8, 1974, an obscure relief pitcher named Tom House caught the ball in the Atlanta bullpen. 41 years later, House is now an expert on throwing mechanics, working mostly with QBs in the NFL. House had been a pitching coach in Texas under Bobby Valentine, in the days when George W. Bush owned the ballclub.

              11) Of the nine batters in Oakland's lineup Wednesday, Craig Gentry was the only one who played for the A's last season. Mark Canha, Tyler Ladendorf both hit triples in a 5-run third inning-- it was the first MLB hit for both guys.

              10) UNLV loses freshman star Rashad Vaughn to the NBA Draft, raising the question of whether it is worth it to recruit high-caliber players like Vaughn, if they're just gong to bolt after one season. Spend lot of resources recruiting them, coaching them, but never reap the benefits of having a veteran player.

              9) Reverse side of that is at Georgetown, where star D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera is said to have changed his mind and will play for the Hoyas next season. He's a very good player; his return makes Georgetown a top 25 team.

              8) Louisville poached Cleveland State's best player; Trey Lewis, who scored 16.3 ppg for Vikings last season. This is what happens when bigtime coaches find their rosters a little short; they just raid a mid-major and take their best player. Not a lot of ethics when millions of dollars are at stake.

              7) Chris Mullin got his first signee when Tarik Owens left Tennessee for the Red Storm; 6-10 sophomore didn't play all that much for the Vols this season but improved near the end of the year- St John's needs bodies- they're losing a lot from this year's team.

              6) CBS newsman Bob Schieffer is retiring later this year; he has hosted Face the Nation on Sunday mornings since 1991.

              5) Minnesota Twins are first AL team since 1977 (Seattle) to get shut out in first two games of a season; they haven't even had a guy on third base yet.

              4) Apparently ESPN bought a stake in DraftKings, so expect a deluge of fantasy sports commercials. Tryng to figure out how that is legal but gambling on games isn't-- seems like the same thing.

              3) Big Dawg reports that 115 guys were on the DL before this baseball season even started; thats 3.83 guys per team. Again, one guy was on the DL after he got hurt while sneezing.

              2) I love my IPhone6, but I despise Auto Correct; please let me correct my own mistakes. Auto Correct causes more problems than it fixes.

              1) NHL's best teams in shootouts: Chicago 9-3, St Louis and Colorado, both at 9-4. Worst teams in shootouts: Philly is 3-11, Detroit 4-10.

Slumping Heat doing no better at the window

The Miami Heat are 1-4 straight up in their past five, but have failed to cover once during that span. Miami has an average scoring margin of -7.8 points per game, while being favored twice.

The Heat are currently +1 when they host the Chicago Bulls Thursday.

NBA roundup: Rose returns, but Bulls fall to Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Guard Victor Oladipo hit a layup with 1.5 seconds remaining to give the Orlando Magic a 105-103 victory over the Bulls on Wednesday, spoiling the much-anticipated return of Chicago All-Star guard Derrick Rose.

Rose, who missed 20 games after right knee surgery, had little impact for the Bulls and did not play in the fourth quarter. He finished with nine points in 19 minutes.

Oladipo led everyone with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists. Center Nikola Vucevic had 22 points and seven rebounds. The Magic won their third consecutive game, tying their longest winning streak of the season.

Guard Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 19 points.

                  Celtics 113, Pistons 103

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Guard Isaiah Thomas poured in a season-high 34 points off the bench, and Boston eliminated Detroit from playoff contention.

Thomas also had six assists. Forward Jae Crowder contributed 17 points and six rebounds for Boston, which moved into a tie with the Brooklyn Nets for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

Power forward Brandon Bass tossed in 16 points off the bench, and shooting guard Avery Bradley chipped in 11 points and five rebounds for the Celtics, who earned their fifth consecutive road win. Center Andre Drummond's 22 points and 14 rebounds topped the Pistons, who had a five-game home winning streak snapped.

                  Hawks 114, Nets 111

NEW YORK -- Center Al Horford scored 24 points, including a clutch slam dunk with 19.1 seconds remaining, and Mike Scott added 20 points, leading Atlanta to a victory over Brooklyn, damaging the Nets' Eastern Conference playoff hopes in the process.

The victory gave the Hawks a franchise-record 59 wins with just 19 losses. The Nets fell into a tie with Boston for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Both teams have four games to play, but the Celtics hold the tiebreaker.

Horford gave the Hawks the lead for good with his dunk. Guard Jeff Teague added two free throws with 2.7 seconds left for the final score. Teague chipped in with 15 points and 12 assists. Center Brook Lopez led Brooklyn with 26 points.

                  Raptors 92, Hornets 74

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Guard DeMar DeRozan scored 18 points, and Toronto won for the first time in more than five years at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Guards Greivis Vasquez and Louis Williams poured in 16 points each, while forward Tyler Hansbrough had 12 points and forward James Johnson added 11 points for Toronto, which snapped a two-game skid.

Guard Kemba Walker scored 15 points for the Hornets, who trailed 69-45 after three quarters and didn't have enough firepower with an injury-reduced lineup.

                  Wizards 119, 76ers 90

PHILADELPHIA -- Guard Bradley Beal scored 21 points, and hot-shooting Washington ripped Philadelphia for its fourth consecutive win.

Guard Ramon Sessions added a season-high 19 points and center Marcin Gortat had 18 for the Wizards, who shot a franchise-record 65.3 percent from the field despite resting guard John Wall and forward Nene.

Forward Robert Covington scored a career-high 27 points for Philadelphia, which dropped its seventh straight.

                  Grizzlies 110, Pelicans 74

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Power forward Zach Randolph posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds as Memphis rolled to a victory over New Orleans at FedExForum.

Randolph, like center Marc Gasol, had a game-high six assists. Gasol also scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

The loss dropped New Orleans (42-36) back into a tie with Oklahoma City for the eighth and last playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Thunder were idle Wednesday night, and both teams have four games left.

                  Pacers 102, Knicks 86

NEW YORK -- Guard George Hill scored a game-high 20 points to spearhead Indiana's rout of New York in Madison Square Garden.

Hill, who also had six rebounds and five assists, was among six Pacers who scored in double figures. Guard C.J. Miles chipped in with 13 points. Forwards David West and Luis Scola and center Roy Hibbert finished with 11 each.

The Pacers remain one game back in the race for the final two Eastern Conference playoff spots. The Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets are both 36-42, while the Miami Heat are tied with Indiana (both 35-43). All four teams have four games remaining.

                  Cavaliers 104, Bucks 99

MILWAUKEE -- LeBron James knocked down a 3-pointer with 14.1 seconds left that snuffed out a late Milwaukee rally and Cleveland clinched the Central Division title. James finished with 21 points despite scoring just two in the second and third quarters.

Point guard Kyrie Irving scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second quarter for the Cavs. He hit four of eight 3-point shots and had nine assists in 41 minutes.

Cleveland shot 49 percent from the field and hit 11 of 34 from beyond the arc while outrebounding Milwaukee 44-32.

                  Spurs 110, Rockets 98

SAN ANTONIO -- Tony Parker, who left Tuesday's game due to a tight right Achilles tendon scored 27 points during San Antonio's win over Houston the next night.

The Spurs, who won their ninth straight, meet the Rockets again Friday in Houston.

The Spurs moved into a tie for fifth place with the Los Angeles Clippers in the Western Conference. The Clippers have the tiebreaker advantage for playoff-seeding purposes. The Spurs are only a half game out of second place, a spot occupied by Houston and Memphis.

                  Nuggets 119, Lakers 101

DENVER -- Forward Kenneth Faried scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Denver used a big second half to pull away and beat Los Angeles.

Forward Danilo Gallinari scored 27 points and guard Ty Lawson had 16 in his return from a one-game absence to help the Nuggets clinch the season series with the Lakers.

Guard Jordan Clarkson had 21 points and forward Ryan Kelly scored 17 points for the Lakers, who have lost five straight.

                  Jazz 103, Kings 91

Forwards Carl Landry and Omri Casspi and guard Ben McLemore each scored 16 points for Sacramento, which played without usual starters DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay.

                  Trail Blazers 116, Timberwolves 91

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Forward LaMarcus Aldridge collected 24 points and 13 rebounds despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter as Portland routed Minnesota.

                  Mavericks 107, Suns 104

DALLAS -- Shooting guard Monta Ellis scored a team-high 20 points, including a driving layup in a 6-0 run that gave Dallas the lead for good down the stretch, and the Mavericks officially snuffed out Phoenix's playoff hopes.

Dallas power forward Dirk Nowitzki added 19 points and drilled a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left that helped nail down the win.

The Suns were eliminated from the playoff race despite a season-high, 30-point effort from reserve guard Gerald Green. Phoenix lost for the seventh time in eight games.

                      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

I watch lot of baseball; here are six announcers/announce teams I prefer to listen to:

-- Dick Enberg, Padres-- What a career this guy has had, all different sports. He is in his late 70's and still doing play-by-play. Pretty cool.

-- Brian Anderson, Bill Schroeder, Brewers-- Anderson is also very good on college hoop during March Madness.

-- Bob Brenly, Diamondbacks-- Has a way of explaining things very simply.

-- Dan Orsillo/Jerry Remy, Red Sox--- Orsillo is very good and once he gets laughing with Remy (who has kind of a dark side) it is good TV.

-- Rich Waltz, Tommy Hutton, Marlins-- Lot of times they digress into social media and other stuff when the Marlins stink, but they're upbeat and fun to listen to.

-- Tom Grieve, Rangers-- Like a wise uncle in the booth; very smart, calm. Always learn something when I listen to him.

                      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                      13) Trevor Bauer didn't allow a hit in six innings at Houston Thursday, in his six innings (111 PT) he allowed only six fair balls to be hit, striking out 11. In its first three games, Astros are batting .097 as a team.

                      12) Atlanta Hawks forward Thabo Sefolosha broke his ankle in an incident with the NYPD at a nightclub early Wednesday morning. He played 19 mpg in the Hawks' last six games before the injury.

                      11) Bobby Hurley was officially named coach at Arizona State, as his career path moves in the direction of eventually replacing Mike Krzyzewski at Duke.

                      10) Seven Kentucky players declared for the NBA Draft, gutting their team for next year; eight of the top 20 high school seniors are still undeclared, so you know John Calipari will be after lot of those guys.

One mock draft I saw had one Harrison brother getting picked #53, the other not getting taken at all. Why leave early if that is when you're getting picked?

                      9) There are 351 Division I college basketball teams; there are already 261 transfers posted for this year. Kids make bad decisions, or things don't go as well as they would like. No one wants to sit anymore, not even for a while.

                      8) There is a Presidential election in 2016; I personally don't care who wins, as long as their last name isn't Clinton or Bush.

                      7) There was a story this week about how in 2008, Celtics played Atlanta in a playoff series; Boston's scouting report was 100 pages long. Thats an awful lot of information-- how much do you think gets absorbed?

                      6) Adrian Gonzalez is the ballplayer ever to hit five home runs in his first three games of a season; I was surprised no one had ever done that before.

                      5) NFL announced their preseason schedule Thursday; Vikings-Steelers is the Hall of Fame game August 9. Johnny Manziel remains an interesting person, as Buffalo-Cleveland is somehow a national TV game on August 23.

                      4) As far as NFL mock drafts go, only one per writer, please; there is too much speculation in media today anyway. The real draft is three weeks away.

                      3) Not to throw dirt on any baseball team this early in the season, but if your starting rightfielder is Jeff Francoeur, chances are your team stinks.

                      2) Nigel Williams-Goss transferred out of Washington's basketball program; he is a very good player, will be an excellent get no matter where he lands. Two schools that already have had contact with him: UNLV and Arkansas.

                      1) Don't think I could ever go to the Masters; would be traumatic to be without my cellphone for that long.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

                        Letdown spot

We’re tabbing this NHL regular season finale as our letdown spot, but it could really be dubbed a “motivational” spot, with the Pittsburgh Penguins still playing for postseason positioning and the Buffalo Sabres in full-on tank mode hoping to score projected No. 1 overall pick Connor McDavid in the upcoming NHL Draft.

The Pens visit the Sabres Saturday night and head into Thursday's action sitting seventh in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh isn’t out of the woods when it comes to even making the playoff cut so there's a lot on the line. Buffalo is at the bottom of the league with 54 points, two less than Arizona. The Sabres, who have actually won three of their last five, could be counting down the seconds to the offseason and laying down for the Pens in order to secure the No. 1 pick.

                        Lookahead spot

The Toronto Raptors have the Atlantic Division title in the bag but are still trying to secure the third spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They're currently tied with the Chicago Bulls but hold the tie-breaker heading toward the weekend. Toronto has a huge matchup with the Heat Saturday night – Miami trying to sneak into the No. 8 spot - but could get caught looking ahead when it takes the court in Orlando Friday.

The Raptors visit the Magic ahead of that showdown in Miami. Toronto has won all three meetings with Orlando this season, with an average margin of victory of 10 points in those contests. The Magic did the Raps a favor Wednesday, edging the Bulls by two points and have a taste for the spoiler role now. They’ve won three in a row heading into Thursday, going 3-0 ATS in that span.

                        Schedule spot

Coors Field is always a tricky stadium to deal with, but it has especially draining effects this early into the season. Fresh off spring training, teams aren’t yet in tip-top shape and the thin air in Denver can quickly leave players lethargic. The Chicago Cubs head up the mountain for the Rockies' home opening series, starting Friday.

No team in the big leagues smashes more home runs in front of their faithful than Colorado. The Rockies launched a MLB-high 119 balls over the fences at Coors Field and have already done some damage with the long ball, recording five home runs in their season-opening set against the Brewers this week. Colorado won all three road games and scored a combined 20 runs in those three contests. The Cubs and Rockies have gone Over the number in 13 of their last 18 meetings in Coors Field.
