    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Duke 68, Wisconsin 63-- Badgers' bench played total of 52 minutes in two games; would've loved to have seen Duke-Kentucky.

-- Not to say Duke gets preferential treatment, but by my count there are 8 former Dukies analyzing basketball on TV; next most? Best I can do is UCLA, with three.

-- Big 14 is now 0-6 in national title games since 2000; six different schools lost

-- San Jose Sharks will miss the NHL playoffs for first time in ten years.

-- If I hear much more about Eldrick Woods' practice rounds, I'm going to puke.

-- Could someone explain to me why George Raveling is in the Hall of Fame? Not to be disrespectful, but what has he done to be a Hall of Famer? Someone help me.....

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Day........

    13) Rockies 10, Brewers 0-- Rough day for Milwaukee, which lost Ryan Braun to a ribcage injury and got crushed in home opener-- it was 10-0 in 4th inning. Colorado's pitcher Kendrick even had two hits. Guess it was an omen for the Badgers too-- bad day in Cheeseland.

    12) Mets 3, Nationals 1-- Scherzer was throwing no-hitter in sixth inning when Nats botched a short pop-up in centerfield, then Duda knocked in couple runs with Mets' first hit of game. Mets' third run scored after another Desmond error. Bartolo Colon was tough for the Metropolitans.

    11) Braves 2, Marlins 1-- Only the Marlins could have a rain delay in a home game in a domed stadium; how about closing the damn roof when you know it is going to rain???? By the way, it rains most every day in Miami at 5:00 or so.

    10) Reds 5, Pirates 2-- Cueto was brilliant for seven innings, Reds bullpen let Pirates tie it, then Todd Frazier hit 3-run homer to send fans home happy. It is tough to recognize Andrew McCutchen without his dredlocks.

    9) Dodgers 6, Padres 3-- This is where I complain about fact that two of my fantasy baseball starters are hurt already. Baseball is a sport where a guy went on the DL this spring after he got hurt while sneezing. Lineman on the Patriots played a Super Bowl with a torn ACL.

    8) Blue Jays 6, Bronx 1-- Didi Gregorius got thrown out stealing 3rd in bottom of 8th inning, with two outs and Jays leading 5-1, with Teixeira up. On bright side, you can get a 28-ounce steak in their fancy restaurant in their stadium for $62, so there's that. Toronto has no excuses this year; they're a good team.

    7) Tigers 4, Twins 0-- 12 years ago, Dave Bliss was basketball coach at Baylor; one of his players killed a teammate, and Bliss told his players to portray their dead teammate as a drug dealer to conceal the fact that Bliss was breaking rules in how he funded the player's scholarship.

Bliss is 71 now and somehow, Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, OK has hired him to be their basketball coach. I swear, if they hired me it would have been better that hiring this creep. Scumbag is too kind a word for him.

    6) Orioles 6, Rays 2-- Not sure how much $$$$ Buck Showalter makes, but I'm sure it ain't enough; the job he has done in Baltimore is really excellent. Not a lot to like about the way the Rays are looking; plus they have pitching injuries..

    5) Royals 10, White Sox 1-- I've never heard of a pitcher having a cramp in his pitching thumb, but that is what drove Ventura out of the game. We get excited about Opening Day, but overreact to Opening Day results; its a long season.

    4) Mariners 4, Angels 1-- Just glad the A's didn't open against King Felix this year; we've done that way too many times. Its cool that it looks like Hernandez will pitch his whole career in Seattle, even if they are our divisional rivals.

    3) Astros 2, Indians 0-- JD Martinez bats 5th for Detroit, a really good team; he got released (RELEASED?!?!?!?!) by the Astros last March. How does the GM of the Astros explain that one to his owner? Doesn't he have any assistants who will tell him when he's about to do something stupid?

    2) Red Sox 8, Phillies 0-- Weird situation here, as most people expect Hamels to be on the Red Sox by the end of July, and here he is, pitching against them. Pedroia and Ramirez both hit couple taters. Not lot of optimism in Philly.

    1) A's 8, Rangers 0-- Sonny Gray was tremendous, A's broke 10-game skid on Opening Day. Its only one game of 162, but Ike Davis at 1B is a huge upgrade defensively over the suspects who played there last year. Jesse Hahn starts for Oakland tonight; he went to high school with Matt Harvey of the Mets.

Game of the Day: Spurs at Thunder
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (+5,5, 216)

San Antonio has posted seven consecutive victories and 17 in the last 20 games and is in sixth place in the West while trailing the fifth-place Los Angeles Clippers by a half-game. The Spurs drubbed the Thunder 130-91 on March 25 when they shot 58 percent from the field and made 13-of-21 from 3-point range. Oklahoma City can’t afford too many stumbles if it expects to hold off the Pelicans and coach Scott Brooks grasps the situation. “Every night has playoff implications but that’s been our mentality for seven years now,” Brooks told reporters. “You treat every game the same, you focus on every game and pay attention to detail.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, FSN Oklahoma City (Oklahoma)

LINE HISTORY: Most shops opened the Thunder as 4.5-point road dogs and the total at 217. A few hours later, those numbers were sitting at +5.5, 216.

            POWER RANKINGS: Spurs (-10.4) - Thunder (-7.5) + home court (-3.0) = Thunder -0.1

INJURY REPORT: Spurs - C Tiago Splitter (Out, calf)

ABOUT THE SPURS (51-26): San Antonio’s 39-point beat down of Oklahoma City was the beginning of the seven-game winning streak that has seen each game decided by double digits. The Spurs have an average victory margin of 20.3 points during the stretch with the most recent win being Sunday’s 107-92 decision over the Golden State Warriors. Small forward Kawhi Leonard has been a standout with 20 or more points in four of the last five games and he tied his career high of 26 points against Golden State while recording a career-best seven steals.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (42-35): Backup guard Anthony Morrow has made six 3-pointers in two of the past three games and is averaging 22.3 points during the stretch. “He’s obviously on fire from 3-point range,” Brooks told reporters. “He gives you effort every night, he competes on both ends, that’s what you have to do. He’s making his 3s and Russell (Westbrook) and our guys are finding him.” Morrow’s sharpshooting on the perimeter has helped soften the loss of Kevin Durant for the season and he has scored in double digits in 13 of the past 14 games.

            TRENDS:

            * Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Oklahoma City.
            * Spurs are 1-9 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Oklahoma City.
            * Spurs are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games overall.
            * Over is 7-1-1 in Thunder last nine home games.

CONSENSUS: Per Consensus, 52 percent of users are backing the Spurs.

                  Tuesday, April 7

Phoenix Suns a hot under bet in past month

The Phoenix Suns are one of the hottest under plays in the NBA over the past month, registering a record of 2-13 Over/Under since March 6.

Season to date, the Suns have a record of 35-41-1, making them the 13th best Under bet on the year.

The Suns visit the Atlanta Hawks Tuesday evening and the total is presently 203.

Top Over referee working Hornets-Heat game Tuesday

Ed Malloy, the NBA's top Over referee with a record of 38-22 this season, will be part of the crew that works the game between the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat Tuesday evening.

Malloy has worked two Hornets games this year (2-0 Over/Under) and four Heat games this season (3-1 O/U).

Oddsmakers have tabbed the game with a total of 189.

                    Tuesday's Top Action

                    April 7, 2015

PHOENIX SUNS (39-38) at ATLANTA HAWKS (57-19)

                    Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Atlanta -8.5, Total: 203

The Hawks continue their quest towards winning 60 games when they host the Suns Tuesday.

The Suns hosted the Jazz on Saturday and won 87-85 as 1-point home favorites. Phoenix had lost five straight games SU before that win, but it has covered in two straight contests. The Hawks, meanwhile, won 131-99 as 10-point home favorites against the Nets on Saturday.

Atlanta has won four of its past six games both SU and ATS and has shot 45% or better from the field in four of the past five. The Hawks are starting to find their offense and must gain some rhythm heading into the postseason. These teams met once this season and the Hawks won that game 96-87 as 6.5-point road favorites. Over the past three seasons though, the Suns are 3-2 SU and ATS when facing the Hawks.

The Suns are 49-26 ATS in road games over the past two seasons and 19-10 ATS in non-conference games this season. The Hawks, however, are 25-9 ATS when the total is 200 to 209.5 this season. They are also 22-10 ATS after playing three straight games as a favorite this season.

SG Brandon Knight (Ankle) is out for the season for Phoenix, which is also without SG Marcus Thornton (Toe) in this game and C Alex Len (Nose) indefinitely. Atlanta, meanwhile, will not have PF Paul Millsap (Shoulder) or PG Dennis Schroder (Toe) in this one.

The Suns beat the Jazz on Saturday and will now look to end the season on a positive note. They’ll be facing an elite Hawks team on Tuesday and PG Eric Bledsoe (17.2 PPG, 6.0 APG, 5.4 RPG, 1.6 SPG) will need to be on his game in this one. He finished with 21 points, six assists and a steal in 35 minutes the last time he faced the Hawks. He is stronger than Jeff Teague and must attack the basket in this game.

C Brandan Wright (7.2 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.2 BPG) has played very well with Len not in the lineup. Over the past two games, the big man is averaging 15.0 PPG, 7.5 RPG and 3.0 BPG. He’ll need to do a solid job on Al Horford in this one.

PF Markieff Morris (15.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.3 SPG) will need to find his stroke in this game. He had just 10 points against Utah but 17 points and 12 boards the game before against Golden State. He scored 22 points the last time he faced the Hawks and must use his speed to create mismatches at the power forward position.

SF Marcus Morris (10.5 PPG, 4.6 RPG) had 18 points the last time he faced the Hawks. He also grabbed six boards in that game and he can really change this game if he is scoring. He’s very inconsistent but is tough to stop once he gets going. Morris will need to rebound from his four-point performance against Utah.

The Hawks have been dealing with injuries and resting players recently, so C Al Horford (15.1 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.3 BPG) has had to step it up. Horford is shooting 66% from the field over the past four games and averaging 17.3 PPG in those contests. He’ll need to use his big body to get himself some solid positioning against Brandan Wright on Tuesday.

PG Jeff Teague (16.1 PPG, 7.0 APG, 2.4 RPG, 1.7 SPG) had 17 points, eight assists and two steals in just 24 minutes against the Nets on Saturday. Teague will have to be on his game against Phoenix or the Hawks will not have a good chance of winning this game. He had just eight points and nine assists the first time he played the Suns this season and can’t afford to not hold his own against Eric Bledsoe on Tuesday.

SG Kyle Korver (12.2 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 2.6 APG) is 6-for-9 from the outside over the past two contests and has found his stroke after slumping big time in February. He shot 48% from three in March and will have plenty of good looks at the basket against a Suns team that plays a very up-and-down style of game. The last time Korver played Phoenix, he had 14 points, four rebounds and two blocks in 38 minutes of action. He’ll need to play like that once again in this game.

SAN ANTONIO SPURS (51-26) at OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (42-35)

                    Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: San Antonio -4.5, Total: 216

The Spurs go for an eighth straight victory when they face the struggling Thunder in Oklahoma City Tuesday.

San Antonio hosted Golden State on Sunday and blew out the Warriors 107-92 as a 6-point home favorite. The Spurs have now won-and-covered in seven straight games and 10 of their past 11. The team has also shot 50% or better from the field in four of its past five contests.

The Thunder have played extremely poorly lately, losing 115-112 as 1-point home favorites against the Rockets on Sunday. It was their third straight loss both SU and ATS and they’ve also failed to win SU and ATS in five of their past six as well.

The Spurs haven’t played a road game against the Thunder since May 31, 2014, when San Antonio won 112-107 as a 3.5-point underdog. Prior to that loss at home for the Thunder, Oklahoma City had won-and-covered in nine straight games versus San Antonio at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The Spurs are 11-8-1 ATS when playing the second night of a back-to-back this season. The Thunder, meanwhile, are 6-1 ATS when playing as home underdogs this season.

C Tiago Splitter (Calf) is out for the Spurs and SF Kevin Durant (Foot), PF Serge Ibaka (Knee), PF Nick Collison (Ankle) and SG Andre Roberson (Ankle) are still out indefinitely or for the season for the Thunder.

The Spurs are extremely hot as of late and SF Kawhi Leonard (16.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 2.3 SPG) has been dominating teams on both sides of the ball. Leonard had 26 points, five boards, three assists and an amazing seven steals against the Warriors last game. He should be able to really dominate a Thunder team that is weak at the small forward position without Kevin Durant.

PF Tim Duncan (13.7 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 3.0 APG, 1.9 BPG) had 19 points and seven boards in 24 minutes against Golden State last game. The Thunder are missing their best defender inside with Serge Ibaka out and Duncan is going to need to be aggressive in this one. He is averaging 15.5 PPG and 5.5 RPG in two meetings with Oklahoma City this season and should be able to put up even better numbers on Tuesday.

PG Tony Parker (14.5 PPG, 5.0 APG, 2.0 RPG) is going to be the key to this game for the Spurs though. Russell Westbrook has been the most dominant player in the league over the past few months and Parker is going to be faced with the task of guarding him. If he can’t put forth a solid effort on the defensive end then the Spurs will get blown out in this one. Parker will also have to add some offense in this game and he has not done that recently, failing to score in double digits in each of the past three games.

The Thunder have really struggled lately but PG Russell Westbrook (27.7 PPG, 8.7 APG, 7.3 RPG, 2.1 SPG) has not been the reason for that. Westbrook had 40 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds in the loss to Houston on Sunday. He’s going to need to be at his best against San Antonio in order to pull off this upset at home and keep his team on pace for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

SGs Anthony Morrow (10.7 PPG) and Dion Waiters (11.3 PPG, 1.0 SPG) combined for 36 points against Houston last game. The two of them will need to continue to play well offensively because the Thunder are really missing the scoring of their injured players. Morrow is a tremendous outside shooter (44% 3PT) and Waiters knows how to score in a number of ways. They will need to put that on full display against San Antonio on Tuesday.

C Enes Kanter (15.2 PPG, 9.0 RPG) has been the most consistent performer offensively outside of Westbrook for this team. Over the past five games, Kanter is averaging 20.8 PPG, 14.0 RPG and 1.2 BPG. He will need to play well defensively in this game and he has not done so over the past few contests. If he is letting his opponents score easily then his work on the offensive end is meaningless.

                      Tuesday's Tip Sheet

                      April 7, 2015

Hornets at Heat – 7:35 PM EST

Time is running out for these Southeast Division rivals as their push for the postseason is fizzling out. Miami seemed like it was in a solid spot at a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference at 32-36 on March 20, but the Heat has dropped nine of their past 11 games to fall into a tie for ninth place. The Heat lost all three games on their recent road trip at Cleveland, Detroit, and Indiana, while suffering a pair of defeats by 20 or more to the Cavaliers and Pacers.

The Hornets sit 1 ½ games behind the Celtics for the eighth spot in the East with six contests remaining, as Charlotte goes for back-to-back victories for the first time since early March. Charlotte won five straight games to tip off March, but Steve Clifford’s club have lost 10 of its past 15 games, including a 1-6 cold stretch on the highway. The Hornets edged the 76ers on Saturday night, 92-91, but Charlotte will face only one team in its last six games that is out of playoff contention (Detroit).

The home team has won all three meetings this season, while the winner hasn’t scored more than 96 points. In the previous matchup at Time Warner Cable Arena in late January, the Hornets edged the Heat, 78-76, but Miami cashed as six-point underdogs. Since the beginning of March, the Heat has captured eight victories in 10 tries at American Airlines Arena, which includes a 5-2 ATS record as a favorite.

Suns at Hawks – 7:35 PM EST

Phoenix remained above .500 with Saturday’s 87-85 home victory over Utah to snap a five-game losing streak. The Suns sit three games behind the Thunder for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference as they embark on a rough four-game road trip that continues to Dallas, New Orleans, and San Antonio. Brandon Knight is done for the season with an ankle injury for Phoenix, as the point guard has missed 11 of the past 12 games. The Suns have performed well on the road recently, covering seven of their last nine on the highway, including four ATS wins as a seven-point ‘dog or higher.

The Hawks are trying to stay healthy down the stretch with the top seed in the Eastern Conference wrapped up. Forward Paul Millsap is likely out for the remainder of the regular season with a sprained right shoulder, but should be ready when the playoffs begin later this month. Atlanta has split its past 10 games, while coming off a 131-99 blowout of Brooklyn on Saturday as 10-point home favorites. The Hawks go for the season sweep of the Suns after Atlanta won in the Valley last month, 96-87 as 6 ½-point favorites.

Spurs at Thunder – 8:05 PM EST

San Antonio is peaking at the right time with seven straight victories, as the Spurs look to improve their playoff seeding with a win at Oklahoma City. Gregg Popovich’s club begins tonight’s action only two games behind Houston for the top spot in the Southwest Division, as the Spurs take on the Rockets tomorrow night at home for a crucial showdown. First things first, San Antonio goes for its second victory over Oklahoma City in the last three weeks, as the Spurs routed the Thunder at the AT&T Center, 130-91 as 7 ½-point favorites on March 25, the first win during this hot streak. An incredible stat if you want to back the Spurs is San Antonio has covered the number in each of its past 13 victories.

The Thunder has gone backwards of late with losses in five of its last six games, including three straight defeats. Oklahoma City fell at home to Houston on Sunday, 115-112 as one-point underdogs, as Russell Westbrook put up another triple-double by scoring 40 points, pulling down 11 rebounds, and dishing out 13 assists. Anthony Morrow came off the bench and drilled six three-pointers for the Thunder in the loss, as the Rockets went to the line 50 times and converted 31 free throws. The last time the Thunder hosted the Spurs, San Antonio eliminated Oklahoma City in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals last May in overtime. Oklahoma City has won nine of the past 10 home matchups with San Antonio, as the Spurs have been limited to 100 points or less eight times in this span.

Warriors at Pelicans – 8:05 PM EST

Golden State is playing out the string with the top seed in the Western Conference locked up, as the Warriors wrap up their three-game road trip in New Orleans. The Warriors didn’t put up a great performance in their previous outing, falling at San Antonio, 107-92 on Saturday night to end a 12-game winning streak. Steve Kerr’s club scored under 100 points for the first time since March 9, as Klay Thompson was limited to six points on 3-of-11 shooting. Golden State goes for the four-game season sweep of New Orleans, even though Pelicans’ star center Anthony Davis sat out the last two losses to the Warriors with injuries.

The Pelicans return home following a 2-1 West Coast swing, capped off by a 99-90 setback at Portland on Saturday. New Orleans had its four-game winning streak snapped by the Blazers, but Monty Williams’ team took care of business against lottery teams with wins over the Kings (twice), Lakers, and Wolves. Since the All-Star break, the Pelicans have won eight of their last 11 games at Smoothie King Center, while posting an impressive 10-2 ATS record this season as a home underdog.

                          Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

I love college basketball, but here are six things I'd do to improve it.........

-- Let kids jump right from high school to the NBA; but if you go to college, you're there for at least two years. One-and-done doesn't help college ball or the NBA.

-- Reduce timeouts teams can call from five a game to two a game; there are eight TV timeouts imbedded in the game. There are WAY TOO MANY stoppages now.

-- I'd tell officials to allow continuation on drives to the basket; this is a quick way to increase scoring.

-- In a related item, get rid of flopping; when in doubt, its a block, not a charge, then teams will stop practicing drawing fake charges. Yes, some teams do this.

-- 30-second shot clock, which won't help much and an 8-second halfcourt line- that will force teams not to walk the ball up, and will encourage teams to press more.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Some mid-week thoughts.........

                          13) Pretty cool moment in Montreal Friday night, when Russell Matin's dad played O, Canada on the saxophone before the Jays-Reds exhibition game at Olympic Stadium. Martin grew up in Montreal; this is his first year with the Blue Jays.

                          12) Pretty un-cool stuff in South Carolina, where someone filmed a police officer gunning down a citizen running away from him after a routine traffic stop. Apparently the guy was running because he owes child support and didn't want to be arrested for that. The officer has been charged with murder.

I'm not posting a link to it here but it is all over TV today; it looks like a bad movie, but it is very real and very sad.

                          11) 34.2% of shots in college basketball this season were behind the arc, the highest percentage since 1987.

                          10) Rick Porcello (76-63, 4.30 in 180 starts for a good team) got $82.5M from the Red Sox, on a 4-year contract. Shouldn't they have just paid Jon Lester?

                          9) Related subject: average ticket to a game in Fenway Park this season will be $52.34, highest in major league baseball.

                          8) In the last 29 years, covering 116 major golf tournaments, only eight were won by someone not in the top 100 of the World Golf Rankings.

                          7) Baseball's All-Star Game is in a National Lague park the next four years, which is highly unusual; they alternated leagues for decades.

                          6) 15 of 25 players on the San Diego Padres weren't Padres last season.

                          5) Atlanta Braves are 61-33 in their last 94 games against the Marlins.

                          4) Chattanooga coach Will Wade is the new coach at VCU, where he used to be an assistant to Shaka Smart. Its funny how Chattanooga has to hire a new coach, only because Texas fired its coach and hired Smart from VCU.

                          3) Tennessee Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt grew up in Augusta and worked on the scoreboard at The Masters as a kid.

                          2) If you're Bo Ryan and you just lost a close national title game, it looks bad to bitch about the refs on national TV, even if you're right.

                          1) Just to make you (and me) feel worse about our bracket, ESPN's national contest was won by a little creep from Illinois who is in the sixth grade.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
