    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- VCU coach Shaka Smart might be the Texas coach by the time you read this; he was talking to Longhorn brass Monday night.

-- Duke is first ACC team in the Final Four since 2010.

-- Atlanta Falcons lose a 5th-round draft pick for piping in fake crowd noise for their games; weird part is the fake noise was from a soccer game.

-- WR Miles Austin signed a 1-year deal with the Eagles.

-- Houston Rockets lose PG Patrick Beverley (wrist) for the season.

-- Kyle Korver scored 11 points in 1:05 last night; shooters are marketable; that is something that will never change.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) If you're Texas or Alabama and you need a basketball coach, don't you at least have to give Mike Brey a call and see if he'd like to make $3M a year?

    12) Fordham hired a good coach from Eastern Kentucky, but got abused anyway because the guy......is from Eastern Kentucky. Jeff Neubauer was a top assistant for John Beilein, so he's a damn good coach, but the question will be whether he can recruit at the A-14 level. Players win games.

Some people on Twitter were actually questioning whether Fordham was a better job than Eastern Kentucky; EKU made the NCAAs last season.

    11) Chris Mullin said yes to St John's, so the big question becomes who will he hire as assistant coach/recruiters? Mullin has never coached, so he'll need an experienced tactician and a couple sharp recruiters.

    10) Georgia State's RJ Hunter will skip his senior year, enter the NBA Draft, leaving his dad/coach behind after a memorable season.

    9) Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin was medically cleared to resume coaching duties, after sitting out most of this season with a non-life-threatening heart ailment, so thats good news for Cronin and the Bearcats.

    8) Not sure why the Indianapolis Colts are letting coach Chuck Pagano enter the 2015 season as a lame duck coach, but it looks like they are.

    7) Arena Football games are being shown on CBS Sports Network; great shots during replay reviews, with referee miked and you can see what he's looking at as he reviews the call.

    6) NFL suspended Cleveland GM Ray Farmer for four games for texting the Browns' bench during games. This is a classic case of having too damn many rules, much like the deflated balls thing. Let teams do what they want and you'll have less drama. Who cares if the GM drives the coach nuts during games?

    5) MLB Network is tremendous in March; 3-4 games on TV every day, either live or taped. Lets you get a feel for all the teams.

    4) I'm not a big fan of teams batting the pitcher 8th; don't understand why it is done, other than Tony Larussa used to do it so people assume it is smart. How would you like to explain to a 9th-place hitter why he bats behind the pitcher?

    3) Knicks fired their D-League coach with four games left in season, which seems unfair, seeing as the Knicks' D-League team plays in Madison Square Garden, disguised as the Knicks.

    2) Eldrick Woods is now ranked #104 in the world and sinking; it is the first time since 1996 he is outside the top 100.

    1) You learn about baseball teams when you watch other team's broadcast; the home side rarely gives the down side of their club- they're usually pretty eager to talk honestly about the other team.

      NIT games
Miami won six of its last seven games, losing to Notre Dame by 7 in ACC tournament; they won first three NIT games by total of 13 points, winning last game at Richmond; Hurricanes won 13 of 16 non-ACC games. Temple won seven of last eight games, losing to SMU in AAC tourney; Owls scored 80 ppg in winning three NIT games by 6-13-17 points; they lost by 20 to Duke in only ACC tilt. ACC teams are 11-11 vs spread this postseason, 5-2 as underdogs. AAC teams are 3-5 vs spread, 1-5 as a favorite.

Long trip east for Stanford, which lost six of last seven games away from home, but won first three NIT games at home by 13-9-3 points. Cardinal was in NYC in November, splitting pair of games in Brooklyn. Stanford is an experienced team that shoots ball but they lost four of last five prior to NIT. Old Dominion could have crowd edge, being in Virginia and this is probably bigger deal for them; Monarchs are 14-1 out of C-USA; they beat LSU and VCU, but haven't been away from home since Feb 28- they won NIT games by 9-1-3, all at home. Pac-12 teams are 9-7 vs spread in postseason, 5-5 as favorites; C-USA teams are 5-6, 3-3 as underdogs.

      CBI games (best-of-3 series, 0-0)

      CIT tournament
Tenn-Martin won its first three tourney games, all on road, by 25-1-11 points; Skyhawks lost by 10 at Illinois State its only games vs MVC opponent. UTM doesn't sub much; they're experienced team in Schroyer's first year as coach. Evansville scored 84.7 ppg in its first three CIT games, winning last two on road; Aces won two of three vs OVC teams, winning by 15 at Eastern Illinois 8 days ago after splitting pair with Belmont/Murray in December. MVC teams are 6-5 vs spread this postseason; OVC underdogs are 5-2.

Northern Arizona won 14 of last 17 games, winning three games in this tourney by total of 11 points, with two road wins; NAU won its last eight home games- last home loss was Jan 15. NJIT doesn't play in a league; this is its first road game since Jan 25 and its long road trip at that- they won last four D-1 games, scoring 82.7 ppg in three games in this tournament. NJIT won at Michigan, so they're not chumps, but their schedule is unusual. People were NYC were little annoyed that Engles wasn't interviewed for Fordham job.

Game of the Day: Warriors at Clippers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Clippers (+1, 214)

The Golden State Warriors have accomplished nearly everything they want in the regular season and can spend the last two weeks resting up for the playoffs. The Los Angeles Clippers, who host the Warriors on Tuesday, are still fighting for positioning in the Western Conference and are looking like a legitimate championship contender of late. The Clippers (seven straight) and Golden State (nine in a row) enter with the two longest active winning streaks in the NBA.

Los Angeles finished up a three-game road trip with a dominating performance in Boston on Sunday and is aiming for the No. 2 spot in the West. The Warriors set a franchise record with their 60th win on Saturday at Milwaukee and locked up the top spot in the West while putting a big gap between themselves and the Atlanta Hawks for the top record in the NBA. “It’s been a special year, obviously,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr told reporters. “The guys have been fantastic all season long, just being committed to each other and the work. It’s been so much fun, and it’s great to rack up these milestones as we go.”

          TV:
          10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

          LINE HISTORY:
Most shops opened the Clips as 1-point underdogs, which is where it's currently sitting.

          INJURY REPORT:
GS - Green (Ques). LA - Griffin (Prob), Crawford (Early April).

          POWER RANKINGS:
          Warriors (-15.7) + Clippers (-10.6) + Homecourt (-3) = Clippers +2.1

          ABOUT THE WARRIORS (60-13):
Golden State started resting players by sitting Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala on Saturday, and Kerr will likely find extra rest for Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and especially Andrew Bogut over the last two weeks. Curry has been on fire of late and is averaging 30 points while going 24-of-38 from 3-point range over his last four games, burying at least five 3-pointers in each of those contests. “This is a big accomplishment,” Curry told reporters after Saturday’s win. “It’s a testament to how focused we’ve been over the course of the season. As of late, we’ve had a big lead in the standings, but we’ve understood that there are bigger goals in mind.”

          ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (49-25):
Los Angeles’ recent surge has coincided with Blake Griffin’s return from elbow surgery, which solidified the starting lineup and turned the offense back into a powerhouse. “We’re passing up good shots for great shots,” point guard Chris Paul told reporters. “Obviously with Blake back, it makes us that much more dangerous. He’s one of the best passers on the team and then when he gets to scoring, you just have to pick your poison.” The threat of Griffin’s scoring in the frontcourt is opening things up for the guards, and Paul and J.J. Redick combined for 48 points in Boston on Sunday.

          TRENDS:

*Warriors are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
*Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
*Over is 5-1 in Clippers last 6 overall.
*Home team is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings.

            Rockets' Beverley out for season

Houston Rockets point guard Patrick Beverley will have surgery on his left wrist and miss the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old guard will undergo surgery Tuesday, ESPN.com reported.

Beverley suffered torn ligaments in the wrist March 23 in a victory over the Indiana Pacers. He saw a doctor in Houston last Wednesday and sought a second opinion before deciding on surgery Monday.

In his third year with the Rockets, Beverley is averaging 10.1 points and 3.4 assists per game this season.

Jason Terry, 37, will step in as the starter and Pablo Prigioni will back up Terry.

NBA roundup: DeRozan scores 42 in Raptors' win

TORONTO - Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan had a career-high 42 points, leading the Raptors to a 99-96 win over the Houston Rockets at Air Canada Centre Monday night.

DeRozan went 14 for 27 from the field and 12 of 17 from the foul line to go along with 11 rebounds.

Toronto (44-30) has now won eight straight games at home against Houston (50-24) dating back to 2007.

Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas had 15 points and nine rebounds, while guard Lou Williams had 13 points off the bench.

Guard James Harden had a team-high 31 points, five rebounds and five assists for Houston, which had its five-game win streak snapped.

Rockets forward Corey Brewer added 13 points and five rebounds off the bench, while rookie center Clint Capela added eight points, including a couple highlight-reel dunks.

Harden, who had 13 points through two quarters, went off in the third quarter, scoring 15 points while going 5 for 9 from the field and 3 for 3 from the free-throw line, giving the Rockets a 76-74 lead heading into the fourth.

            Hawks 101, Bucks 88

ATLANTA -- Forward DeMarre Carroll paced a typical balanced attack for Atlanta, which handed the Bucks their 11th straight road loss.

Carroll finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists, helping the Hawks improve to 32-5 at home. Carroll's 3-pointer with 2:30 to play in the fourth quarter pushed the Hawks' lead to 92-77 and finally put away the pesky Bucks.

Milwaukee forward Giannis Antetokounmpo had 18 points to lead the Bucks, whose last road win came on Jan. 29 at Orlando.

Atlanta point guard Jeff Teague returned to the lineup after missing the last two games with a left ankle sprain. Teague played 29 minutes, scoring eight points and handing out nine assists.

            Celtics 116, Hornets 104

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Celtics' win moved them back into a tie for eighth in the Eastern Conference standings along with the Brooklyn Nets.

Guard Avery Bradley led the way with 30 points, and the Celtics clicked offensively from the start. They opened the game by hitting eight of their first nine shots and went on to shoot 50.6 percent from the field with only seven turnovers -- three through three quarters, when they built a 22-point lead.

Guard Kemba Walker led the Hornets with 28 points and 12 assists.

            Jazz 104, Timberwolves 84

MINNEAPOLIS -- Utah started the second half on a 14-0 run to build a 24-point lead and coast home with the victory.

Minnesota has now lost 15 of its last 18 games, and the Jazz have won two straight after snapping a four-game losing streak.

Utah forward Gordon Hayward led all scorers with 22 points, and he was one of four Jazz players in double figures. Second-year guard Trey Burke chipped in 19 points off the bench.

Timberwolves rookie guard Zach LaVine led Minnesota with 21 points. Timberwolves rookie forward Andrew Wiggins finished with 17 points, including a one-handed dunk over 7-foot-1 Jazz center Rudy Gobert.

            Grizzlies 97, Kings 83

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Point guard Mike Conley scored 18 points to help Memphis snap a three-game losing streak.

The Grizzlies had lost three straight games by double-digit margins -- at home to Cleveland and Golden State and at San Antonio in a span of five days.

Memphis (51-24) got well against the Kings (26-47), as Sacramento played without All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, who was rested.

Kings forward Rudy Gay scored a game-high 24 points but his night ended with 2:23 left in the third quarter when he collided with former teammate Marc Gasol (eight points, 11 rebounds and six assists) going for a loose ball. He was tested for a concussion.

            Lakers 113, 76ers 111 (OT)

PHILADELPHIA -- Jordan Clarkson dropped in a layup with seven-10ths of a second left in overtime as the Lakers won a game featuring two of the NBA's worst teams.

Clarkson, a guard who led all scorers with 26 points, took a pass from guard Wayne Ellington and dropped in his game-winner.

Philadelphia forward Nerlens Noel, who finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds, had tied it on a hook shot with 12 seconds to play.

            Trail Blazers 109, Suns 86

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Guard Damian Lillard scored 19 points as the Trail Blazers broke open a close game in the third quarter to record their fourth straight win.

Forward LaMarcus Aldridge added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Trail Blazers (48-25). Forward Nicolas Batum and guard Arron Afflalo each had 16 points for Portland, which clinched a playoff berth in the NBA's Western Conference.

Guard Gerald Green came off the bench to score 13 points for the Suns (38-37), who lost for the fourth straight time.

Portland led by six points at halftime, then outscored Phoenix 37-16 in the third quarter to blow things open.

NCAAB betting cheat sheet: NIT semifinals
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Hurricanes vs. Temple Owls (-1.5, 139)

Will Cummings' senior season has been a bumpy ride at times, but the Temple guard is stepping up when it matters most for the Owls. Cummings has been terrific in the first three rounds of the NIT and aims to lead the Owls into the championship game when they face Miami (Fla.) at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. Cummings is part of a strong three-guard attack for Temple, while Miami also boasts a talented backcourt led by junior Sheldon McClellan.

Temple earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT after barely missing out on the NCAA Tournament despite a strong season that already has seen the team post 17 more wins than a season ago. “I think we kind of just took it as a challenge. We kind of tried to put it behind us and keep it in our minds at the same time,” Cummings told reporters of the NCAA Tournament snub. “Just use it as motivation and come out every game and try to make a statement with each win." Miami earned a No. 2 seed in this tournament and is coming off a thrilling win its last time out, rallying from 18 points down in the second half to slip past Richmond last Tuesday.

                    TV:
                    7 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: This line opened anywhere from Temple +1 to Temple -1 and is now Owls -1.5 at most shops.

                    ABOUT MIAMI (24-12 SU, 16-17-1 ATS, 14-15-1 O/U):
McClellan scored a team-high 16 points against Richmond and averages a team-leading 14.4 points for the Hurricanes, who have played without Angel Rodriguez (wrist) the last two games and expect their point guard again will be unavailable agianst the Owls. Without Rodriguez, Miami will need more support out of guards Davon Reed and Manu Lecomte, who shot a combined 2-of-10 versus the Spiders as the Hurricanes won despite shooting 31.1 percent from the field and 2-of-16 from the arc. "It's just something about this team. We don't really get rattled," said McClellan, who has made 51 3-pointers - one of eight Hurricanes who boast at least 18 this season.

                    ABOUT TEMPLE (26-10 SU, 18-15 ATS, 11-18 O/U):
Cummings is shooting 55.3 percent in the NIT after connecting at a 39.4 percent rate during the Owls' first 33 games and he also is 7-of-12 from 3-point range in the last three games, compared to 17-of-90 entering the tournament. "Everyone that plays basketball should get a chance to play at Madison Square Garden," Cummings told reporters after Temple's 77-59 quarterfinal win over Louisiana Tech. "It's kind of like the stage of all stages." Quenton DeCosey posted his first career double-double in that contest with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Jesse Morgan added 17 points for the Owls, who have scored 70 points or more in six of their last seven games after doing so three times in their previous 14 outings.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Owls are 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
                    * Under is 7-1 in Owls last eight vs. Atlantic Coast.
                    * Under is 6-2 in Hurricanes last eight games following a S.U. win.

Stanford Cardinal vs. Old Dominion Monarchs (+2.5, 135)

At this rate, Old Dominion fans probably expect the Monarchs to defeat Stanford on full-court buzzer-beater on Tuesday. When the teams meet in the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden, Old Dominion will be looking to ride the momentum from three straight dramatic victories, each of which has raised the bar from the previous outing. The top-seeded Monarchs overcame a six-point halftime deficit against Charleston Southern before Jonathan Arledge scored the decisive basket with 19 seconds left against Illinois State, only to be upstaged by Trey Freeman's 35-foot bank shot at the buzzer in the quarterfinal win over Murray State.

"We're on a mission. It's a business trip, but at the same time, I'm going to enjoy the history and the feeling of being in Madison Square Garden," Freeman, who has never been to New York City before this week, told reporters. "I'm going to enjoy my experience, but I know at the end of the day what we're there for." While Old Dominion goes after the program's first NIT title, the second-seeded Cardinal are seeking their third NIT crown, having also won in 1991 and 2012. Senior guard Chasson Randle was a freshman - and the team's leading scorer - in 2011-12, and he arrives at Madison Square Garden eyeing two more victories - and a bit of history too.

Randle (2,326 career points) is the fourth-leading scorer in Pac-12 history - going back to its days as the Pac-10 - and can surpass Todd Lichti for third place on the list, as well as the all-time Stanford record, with 11 points Tuesday. "They say scorers are born. I think with Chasson, he just has an ability to put the ball in the basket," Cardinal coach Johnny Dawkins told reporters, adding that "it's a great moment. First of all, you're talking about a record that's been standing for a long time (since 1989) and it's still standing." Randle had 16 points, while Anthony Brown scored a season-high 26 in last week's 78-75 triumph against Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals.

                    ABOUT OLD DOMINION (27-7 SU, 17-14 ATS, 8-17 O/U):
The Monarchs are back in the NIT Final Four for the first time since 2006, having won nine of their last 10 games in large part thanks to Freeman (17.1 points this season). The junior guard battled an ankle injury earlier in the tournament but came up huge against Murray State as Old Dominion prevailed despite blowing a 10-point lead with under 3 1/2 minutes left. Arledge added 12 points in the quarterfinals and is averaging 14.7 points on 50 percent shooting in the NIT, up from his regular-season numbers of 8.3 points on 42.8 percent from the field.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Cardinal are 6-1 ATS in their last seven non-conference games.
                    * Under is 9-4-1 in Cardinal last 14 overall.
                    * Under is 5-1 in Monarchs last six overall.
