Road teams have huge night on the court Wednesday

Backing road teams was definitely the way to go in NBA action Wednesday night, with teams in the visitors locker room going an impressive 12-1 against the spread.

Even more impressive was that it was road dogs doing most of the leg work, posting a 8-1 record ATS. Road favorites went 4-0 ATS. Away teams have cashed 51.5 percent of the time this season.

The San Antonio Spurs were the lone home team to come through for bettors last night.

Raptors go over again in loss to Bulls

The Toronto Raptors feel 116-103 to the Chicago Bulls Wednesday night, but continue to be the NBA's best over play in the process.

The Raptors have gone over the total in four consecutive games and in six of the last seven.

The latest over run has Toronto at 41-31 over/under on the season and sit atop the standings as the NBA's best over bet.

Next up for the Raptors host the Los Angeles Lakers at the Air Canada Centre Friday.

NBA roundup: Howard returns in Rockets' win

NEW ORLEANS -- Guard James Harden scored 25 points and dished out 10 assists and forward Trevor Ariza added 22 points to lift the Houston Rockets to a 95-93 victory over the slumping New Orleans Pelicans Wednesday night at the Smoothie King Center.

The Rockets trailed by as many as 17 points in the second quarter, but they erased the deficit with a 35-12 run over an 11:20 span of the second and third quarters.

Center Dwight Howard returned to the Rockets' starting lineup after missing the last two months with a sore right knee. Howard played 16 minutes and scored four points and had seven rebounds. Forward Donatas Motiejunas added 21 points for the Rockets, who have won five of their last six games.

The Pelicans dropped their fourth consecutive game, tying their longest losing streak of the season.

      Hawks 95, Magic 83

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Forward Paul Millsap had 25 points and 11 rebounds, leading Atlanta to a victory over Orlando.

The Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak, the worst stretch in their strong season. They already have clinched their first division title since 1995. Guard Jeff Teague had 16 points, including nine points in the final five minutes when the Hawks took control after trailing much of the game.

Hawks guard Kyle Korver added 13 points, and forward DeMarre Carroll had 11 points and seven rebounds. Center Al Horford chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. Guard Elfird Payton led Orlando with 19 points.

      Clippers 111, Knicks 80

NEW YORK -- Guard Austin Rivers scored 21 points to lead six Los Angeles players in double figures, and the Clippers routed the Knicks.

Guard J.J. Redick scored 17 points, and Los Angeles got 14 points from forward Blake Griffin and 14 points, 10 points and blocked five shots from center DeAndre Jordan. Point guard Chris Paul contributed 11 points and 16 assists, one shy of his season best and five short of his career high.

The Knicks, who dressed only 10 players due to various injuries, were led by rookie forward Cleanthony Early's career-high 18 points. Forward Lance Thomas added 14 points.

      Bulls 116, Raptors 103

TORONTO -- For a fourth time this season and fifth time in a row, Chicago defeated Toronto. Guard Jimmy Butler led way with 23 points, and the Bulls used a late 7-0 run led by a 3-pointer from guard Aaron Brooks to pull away for the victory.

Bulls forward Paul Gasol had 18 points, Brooks finished with 16, and reserve forwards Terry Snell and forward Nikola Mirotic added 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Toronto got a season-high 22 points from guard Greivis Vasquez, who matched a career best by hitting six 3-pointers (in 11 attempts). Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan added 20 points, guard Lou Williams had 18 points off the bench, and forward Terrence Ross scored 16.

      Pacers 103, Wizards 101

WASHINGTON -- Guard George Hill scored on a layup with 2.7 seconds left and Indiana ended a six-game losing streak with a win over Washington.

With Argentine soccer legend Lionel Messi on hand, the Pacers (31-40) kicked their offense into winning mode with a 23-11 closing run. Hill scored 12 points in the quarter, including the final basket after Wizards guard John Wall's 3-pointer with 11.9 seconds left tied the score at 101.

Wall scored 34 points -- 27 after halftime -- for the Wizards (41-31), who have lost four straight. The All-Star scored 12 of Washington's 14 points during one stretch for a 90-80 lead with 6:46 left with Messi and members of the Argentine national team watching.

      Heat 93, Celtics 86

BOSTON -- Seriously undermanned Miami, which blew a game in the closing minutes at Milwaukee on Tuesday night, fought off a fourth-quarter charge by Boston and survived.

Despite the absence of guard Dwyane Wade, center Hassan Whiteside and forward Chris Andersen, and with forwards Chris Bosh and Josh McRoberts gone for the year, the Heat remained in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

Miami (33-38) leads Boston (31-40) and the Indiana Pacers (31-40) by two games as the teams fight for the conference's last two playoff spots. The Celtics are ahead on a tiebreaker. The Brooklyn Nets and Charlotte Hornets are each a half-game behind the Celtics and Pacers.

      Cavaliers 111, Grizzlies 89

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Cleveland cruised to an easy win over Memphis at FedExForum behind a game-high 24 points from point guard Kyrie Irving and a double-double by forward Kevin Love with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers blew the game open in the third quarter, going on a 22-4 run to take a 86-57 lead with 1:52 left in the quarter after a 3-pointer from guard Matthew Dellavedova (nine points, four assists).

Forward LeBron James had 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Cavaliers. Center Timofey Mozgov contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a block.

      Nets 91, Hornets 88

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Center Brook Lopez continued his torrid play with 34 points and 10 rebounds, and Brooklyn beat Charlotte in a huge game for both teams' playoff aspirations.

Lopez, who had averaged 29.7 points over his previous three games, was 16 of 26 from the field. His floater in the lane with 23.1 seconds left gave the Nets the lead for good at 87-85, and then he turned defensive hero at the end. With the Hornets inbounding with 3.2 seconds left trailing by three, Lopez deflected an inbounds pass to cause a turnover and the Nets were able to run out the clock.

The Nets (30-40) are now tied with the Hornets (30-40), one-half game out of the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The win gave the Nets the tiebreaker advantage over the Hornets by virtue of two wins in three games between the teams this season.

      Lakers 101, Timberwolves 99 (OT)

MINNEAPOLIS -- Two free throws by guard Jordan Clarkson with 0.3 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Los Angeles to a win over Minnesota at Target Center.

Clarkson led the Lakers with 20 points and finished 8-for-8 from the foul line. He also made a driving layup with 34.5 seconds left in overtime to give Los Angeles the lead for good.

Lakers guard Jeremy Lin added 19 points, and forward Ed Davis contributed 14 points and nine rebounds. Forward Ryan Kelly and center Tarik Black each had 11 points. Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins scored a game-high 27 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor. Forward Chase Budinger had 22 off the bench, and guard Zach LaVine finished with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists.

      Trail Blazers 92, Jazz 89

SALT LAKE CITY -- Guard Damian Lillard scored 23 points and forward LaMarcus Aldridge added 19 to lift Portland to a comeback victory over Utah.

Forward Dorrell Wright chipped in 15 points off the bench to help Portland win for the sixth time in its past seven contests against Utah.

Forward Derrick Favors scored 26 points and collected 13 rebounds while guard Trey Burke chipped in 22 points to lead the Jazz. Center Rudy Gobert added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Utah which lost its third straight game.

The Trail Blazers outdueled the Jazz in fast-break points, finishing with a 21-6 edge.

      76ers 99, Nuggets 85

DENVER -- Rookie forward Robert Covington tied a career high with 25 points, center Nerlens Noel had 14 points and 15 rebounds and Philadelphia beat Denver.

Covington also tied a career high with six 3-pointers to help the 76ers sweep the season series from Denver. Guard Isaiah Canaan added 15 points off the bench for Philadelphia. Guard Ty Lawson scored 19 points and forward Wilson Chandler had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets.

      Spurs 130, Thunder 91

SAN ANTONIO -- Guard Tony Parker scored 21 points, and forward Boris Diaw added 19, helping San Antonio roll past Oklahoma City. The Spurs converted 58 percent of their shots, including 13 of 21 3-pointers.

Parker hit 10 of 14 shots. He had six rebounds and six assists, doing all that work in an efficient 28 minutes. Diaw made nine of 15 from the field. Forwards Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard contributed 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Guard Russell Westbrook and center Enes Kanter led Oklahoma City with 16 points apiece.

      Kings 108, Suns 99

PHOENIX -- Center DeMarcus Cousins scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Sacramento dealt Phoenix's playoff hopes a severe blow.

Sacramento forward Rudy Gay and guard Ray McCallum scored 14 points each, and guard Ben McLemore had six of his 12 points on a pair of big 3-pointers down the stretch. The Kings earned a fourth consecutive win for the first time since early November.

Forward Markieff Morris scored 24 points to lead the Suns, who remain three games behind the Thunder in the race for the final playoff spot in the West.

              Armadillo's Write-Up

              Thursday, March 26

My concern for Wichita State is that their win over Kansas was its Super Bowl, not having played Jayhawks since 1993. Shockers won 11 of last 12 games, are 12-2 out of conference. Notre Dame is in Sweet 16 for first time since '03; coach Brey lost his mom Saturday, so he was gone for part of prep for this. Irish won last seven games, winning first two tourney games by total of seven points. ACC underdogs are 3-0 vs spread in this postseason; MVC teams are 7-4, 5-4 as favorites. Last four 3-seeds who were favored in this round all failed to cover the spread.

North Carolina won its last 11 games in this round, but were favored in 10 of 11 games, and one-point dog in 11th game; their last loss in Sweet 16 was 1992. Tar Heels won five of last six games overall; they split two games vs Big 14 teams, losing to Iowa, beating Ohio State. Wisconsin is on 8-game win streak, may get PG Jackson back here; Badgers lost by 10 to Duke in its only ACC game. Last nine times a #1-seed played a 4-seed in this round, underdog covered seven times. ACC underdogs are 3-0 vs spread this postseason; Big 14 teams are 4-8 vs spread, 2-3 if favored.

West Virginia freshman Miles opened his mouth yesterday, assuring that Kentucky won't overlook WV here; Mountaineers had lost three of last four games before allowing 61.5 ppg in winning first two tourney games- they force turnovers 28.3% of time. Kentucky is unbeaten, with last six wins all by 13+ points; they only turn ball over 16.3 times a game, #35 at protecting ball. Big X teams are 4-6 vs spread this postseason; this is the first time they're a dog. SEC teams are 8-7 vs spread, 3-4 when favored. Huggins is 8-2 vs Calipari, but those were Cincinnati-Memphis games.

Sean Miller was coach at Xavier before before Arizona, hired Chris Mack as an assistant, so this is friends opposing each other. Wildcats won five of last six games, but were fortunate to play 14-seed Georgia State in the second round. Arizona won its last 13 games, winning first two tourney games by 21-15 points; Wildcats lost three games this year, all to teams who missed NCAA tournament. Last seven 2-seeds who played in this round went 3-4 vs spread. Pac-12 teams are 9-3 vs spread this spring, 5-3 as favorites. Big East teams are 6-4 vs spread, 2-2 as underdogs.

              NIT games

              CBI games

              CIT tournament
UL-Lafayette won nine of last ten games, scoring 77 ppg in pair of road wins in this tournament; Ragin' Cajuns turn ball over 20.5 times a game, but sub a lot and play fast tempo (#13). Evansville is 12-2 in non-MVC games, scoring 82.5 ppg in winning first two CIT games, last of which was at Eastern Illinois. Sun Belt teams are 6-1 vs spread this postseason, 2-0 as favorites; MVC teams are 7-4 vs spread, 2-0 as underdogs.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NCAA tournament biggest betting mismatches: Sweet 16
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Kentucky Wildcats (-13.5, 136.5)

Mountaineers’ second-chance looks vs. Wildcats’ weak rebounding

Kentucky may have defeated Cincinnati by 13 points in the Round of 32, but the Bearcats had UK faithful sweating a bit. Cincinnati wasn’t afraid of the big bad Wildcats and pushed around Kentucky inside, grabbing 19 offensive rebounds and scoring 14 second-chance points.

West Virginia presents even more of a threat on the offensive glass. The Mountaineers average 14.3 offensive rebounds per game – second in the nation – and create 13.1 extra scoring chances per contest – most in the country by a lot (VCU was second at 7.6). The Wildcats, on the year, allowed opponents to scoop up 9.4 offensive boards an outing – 236th in Div. I. Kentucky has the talent to overcome that glaring weakness, but you never want to give away this many extra looks with a spread this big.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Wisconsin Badgers (-6, 144)

Tar Heels’ poor shooting vs. Wisconsin’ ability to slow down the game

Roy Williams’ game plan is about as secret as Kanye West’s innermost thoughts. The Heels are going to run and gun, push the tempo and attempt to score as many buckets in transition as they can. North Carolina ranks near the top of the country in possessions per game, at 71.9, and has even cranked that knob to 11 in the tournament, with 79.2 possessions in their track meet with Arkansas in the Round of 32.

Williams and the Tar Heels are approaching a very large speed bump in the Sweet 16. Wisconsin, known for its clock-eating offense under Bo Ryan, sits with just 61 possessions per game – sixth fewest in the country. What that does is drag the pace to a standstill and force UNC to play a halfcourt game. According to TheTarHeelBlog.com, North Carolina is 13-3 SU when possessing the ball 70 or more times but just 13-8 when posting less than 70 possessions this season. The Tar Heels aren’t a great shooting team in a half-court set and will struggle to get the looks they want against the Badgers.

Utah Utes vs. Duke Blue Devils (-5.5, 135)

Utes’ towering frontcourt vs. Jahlil Okafor’s foul shooting

Okafor has been great in the opening two games of the tournament, setting Duke’s freshmen NCAA scoring record with 47 points combined versus Robert Morris and San Diego State. Okafor even went 100 percent from the stripe against the Aztecs – 2 for 2 – but Duke fans aren’t counting on their star big man to knock them down at the stripe. For all his talents, Okafor is a terrible foul shooter, hitting just 51.6 percent from the line this season.

Utah presents a tall task for the project No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft – namely 7-foot freshman center Jakob Poeltl, who is quickly pumping up his draft stock this March. The native of Austria had 12 points in the win against Georgetown, handling a very tough Hoyas frontcourt. Behind Poeltl is fellow 7-footer Dallin Bachynski and 6-foot-10 Jeremy Olsen. That’s plenty of beef and 15 fouls the Utes can throw at Okafor. And with the way Utah is shooting the ball from deep, Duke can’t afford to trade 1-for-2 trips to the stripe against 3-pointers from the Utes.

Michigan State Spartans vs. Oklahoma Sooners (+2, 134.5)

Spartans half-court defense vs. Sooners’ up-tempo attack

Michigan State had better get its rest before Friday’s Sweet 16 game. The Spartans face a Sooners offensive that loves to push the tempo and fire up the quick shot, something MSU just doesn’t run into much playing in the methodical pace of the Big Ten. Michigan State, which had just 56 possessions in the win over Virginia, last faced a team with this pace in a 96-90 OT loss to Minnesota in late February. Sparty fired up 63 shots (average only 55.8) and turned the ball over 13 times in that contest.

Oklahoma will attempt to beat MSU down the floor and escape playing in a half-court offense, something the Spartans defend against better than most. In the win over Virginia, it was Tom Izzo’s adjustments on help defense that led MSU to a berth in the Sweet 16. The Sooners, who average 18.5 seconds per possession, want to avoid a physical grinder and turn this into a game of “catch us if you can”.

NCAA Sweet 16 betting action report: Sharps showing up, WVU hot upset pick
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wichita State Shockers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Open: Pick: Move: +2

Following their win over Kansas in the Round of 32, the Shockers have drawn the early money from bettors, moving this spread as many as 2-points at some books. However, one Las Vegas veteran smells something fishy with this line movement.

“I don’t fully understand it,” Jimmy Vaccaro, oddsmaker at South Point Casino, tells us “I’m not calling it a ‘set-up game’ but I think there will be sharper money coming in on Notre Dame.”

Online, at Sportsbook.ag, Peter Childs saw similar money on the Shockers and tacked on extra points to their spread for this Thursday matchup. However, once the line hit WSU -2, wiseguys stormed back and bought Notre Dame as the underdog.

“We booked a ton of Notre Dame money and pushed this line back down to 1-1.5 points,” Childs tells us. “At Wichita -1.5, we’ve seen very good two-way action and I don’t see us moving off this line until we get closer to game time.”

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Wisconsin Badgers – Open: -3.5, Move: -6

The news that UNC forward Kennedy Meeks will miss the Sweet 16 with a knee injury has forced books to adjust the spread for this big-name battle. According to Jason Simbal, vice president of race and sports for CG Technology in Nevada, Meeks is worth as much as 1.5 points to the Tar Heels spread due to this particular matchup.

“When we sat down to make the line we were thinking 3.5 or four, then when we heard (Meeks) was out, the line went to -6,” says Simbal. “You have a big guy who can run the floor like that, and North Carolina will have to run against Wisconsin, he’s worth a lot more against those big teams. Around 1.5 or two points.”

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Kentucky Wildcats – Open: -14, Move: -13.5

This spread hasn’t moved much since opened as high as 14 points and what action has come in has been on West Virginia. Books are now dealing UK -13.5 but it’s the moneyline bets on the Mountaineers at +850 to pull off the upset that have caught the attention of sportsbooks.

“There’s already a good amount of action on West Virginia, and a lot of that is moneyline,” says Simbal. “A lot of people will throw the WVU moneyline on some parlays and many will lay the points with Kentucky, making this a game we need UK to win by one through 13. It’s a nice middle to have on a game.”

Xavier Musketeers vs. Arizona Wildcats – Open: -9.5, Move: -11.5, Move: -10

Early action is on Arizona to cover, moving this Sweet 16 spread to double figures. The Wildcats haven’t been tested in the tournament so far and bettors don’t see Xavier stepping up to the challenge. Most Nevada books have taken all smaller wagers on Arizona and expect the tourist crowd to keep that trend rolling into the weekend. Online is another story, however, where the Wildcats got as high as -11.5 before wiseguys bought back the Musketeers.

“Arizona saw a lot of action not long after opening, driving the spread to -11 and then -11.5,” John Lester, of Bookmaker.eu, tells us. “But on Tuesday, we saw some steam on Xavier so we adjusted down a point. Unless the public gets more involved, I’m guessing this one closes at -10.”

                        Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Current odds to win the college basketball championship...........

Kentucky, even-- Wager against them at your own peril.

Arizona, 11-2-- Good to have a solid senior point guard.

Wisconsin/Duke, both 8-1-- Lots of Badger fans here in Las Vegas.

Gonzaga 10-1-- Trying to get to first Final Four.

Michigan State, 12-1-- Four straight Sweet 16's, four straight bowl wins.

Utah, 20-1-- There is another Coach K making noise this March.

                        **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random stuff as I head on home

                        13) Over last four years, underdogs are 23-9 vs spread in this round of NCAAs, so you figure if someone is going to get Kentucky, it could be here. Having a lot of prep time to devise a unique strategy could be a reason why.

                        12) Over that same period, #1-seeds are 3-10 against the spread in this round.

                        11) Nevada hires Eric Musselman over Tony Barbee as its basketball coach, maybe because Musselman worked at LSU this year for Trent Johnson, who is one of the best coaches Nevada has had. Wolf Pack is going to move up in Mountain West.

                        10) Joakim Noah had 14 assists against Toronto last week, the first NBA center since 1990 with 14+ assists in a game.

                        9) Halftime score Wednesday in New York: Clippers 63, Knicks 33. Oy.

                        8) Iowa Hawkeyes are letting QB Jake Rudock transfer and play without sitting a year, quite an indictment, seeing as Rudock has been the Hawkeyes' starter the last two seasons and he is rumored to be heading to Big 14 rival Michigan.

                        7) Dalton State won the NAIA basketball championship, in only the second season since they revived their program after a 35-year hiatus. Thats hard to do.

                        6) Old Dominion 72, Murray State 69-- Wild game, with two 3-pointers made in last 0:03.5; Racers lost two games since Thanksgiving, both on banked-in 3-pointers.

                        5) Nothing against Belmont, but watching Murray State play twice this week, I'm feeling cheated they didn't play in NCAAs; think they could've made the Sweet 16, but thats the tightrope mid-majors walk in their conference tournaments.

                        4) A's sent reliever Ryan Cook to AAA, which is surpising; he's helped the ballclub a lot the last few years, but he's had a rough spring. I'm guessing there is going to be a pretty active shuttle between Oakland and their new AAA team in Nashville.

                        3) There is an Arena Football team here in Las Vegas this year, the third time the AFL has tried to find a home in the desert. Singer Vince Neil is the team's owner, joining Gene Simmons as an Arenaball owner.

                        2) Nothing is as uplifting as walking thru a casino just before midnight, and seeing a family of six trudging along, with the mom pushing the youngest in a stroller, while the other three urchins (none older than 10) follow the dad like little ducklings.

                        Start 'em early, people!!!!

                        1) I'm headimg home today after a terrific vacation at South Point, which is a very good place to stay. I highly recommend it........

                          Thursday, March 26

Thursday's NCAAB tournament betting cheat sheet

Wichita State Shockers at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (+2, 137)

The Shockers clinched their third straight 30-win season with the victory over the Jayhawks and have a shot at a rematch with Kentucky, which ended their season with a 78-76 defeat in the round of 32 a year ago. The Shockers are best noted for their defensive prowess, but all five starters scored in double figures against Kansas.

The Irish have won seven straight dating to a loss to Syracuse on Feb. 24, but they've barely edged Northeastern (69-65) and Butler (67-64 in OT) in their first two games of the tournament. "We made big plays down the stretch," senior guard Jerian Grant told reporters. "We've been doing that all year. We're playing with a lot of confidence right now. We want to keep it rolling."

LINE HISTORY: Offshores opened this game as a pick with that moving to Wichita State -2.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Under is 13-2-1 in Fighting Irish last 16 NCAA Tournament games.
                          * Shockers are 1-4 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
                          * Fighting Irish are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 NCAA Tournament games.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Wisconsin Badgers (-6, 144)

The Tar Heels may not have burly forward Kennedy Meeks (knee sprain) on Thursday, which would put additional pressure on forwards Brice Johnson and Justin Jackson to stay out of foul trouble against Kaminsky and company. "I can't think of another 5-man who gets out there and shoots 3s like Frank does," said North Carolina coach Roy Williams, whose team has held both of its NCAA Tournament opponents below 40 percent shooting. Paige is 10-of-21 from 3-point range in his last three contests while swingman J.P. Tokoto has 19 assists and three turnovers over his last three outings.

"These guys definitely have had the kind of season where they've earned every inch of this," Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan told reporters after his team's round of 32 victory over Oregon. "Hopefully we can go out to L.A. and get something done." Sam Dekker scored 17 points versus the Ducks and has shot at least 50 percent from the floor in four of his last five games while making seven 3-pointers over the last two games - his most in any two-game stretch this season. In addition to Kaminsky and Dekker, the Badgers also rely on Nigel Hayes (12.6 points, 6.4 rebounds) for additional scoring and rebounding help.

LINE HISTORY: The majority of offshore books opened the Badgers as 5-point faves and that has moved to -6.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Under is 4-1 in Badgers last five non-conference games.
                          * Under is 7-1 in Tar Heels last eight vs. Big Ten.
                          * Badgers are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 vs. Atlantic Coast.

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Kentucky Wildcats (-13.5, 136.5)

The Mountaineers forced 23 turnovers in the 69-59 victory over Maryland after badgering Buffalo into 17 during the NCAA Tournament round of 64. The tight defense takes some of the pressure off the offense, allowing leading scorer Juwan Staten to ease his way back into the offense after missing the final three games of the regular season and the Big 12 tournament with a knee injury, and Staten has been one of the keys to the pressure defense. “I'm pretty sure nobody in the world thinks we're going to get past Kentucky besides the 1.2 million that's in West Virginia,” Staten told reporters. “So we're going to keep doing what we do. And keep playing.”

The Wildcats are well-suited for the kind of pressure the Mountaineers will throw at them with multiple ball handlers and length at every position. Kentucky allows an average of 53.9 points and held Cincinnati to 31.7 percent from the field while forcing 14 turnovers and blocking six shots. “No one's going to surrender,” Wildcats coach John Calipari told reporters of his players. “They're not going to surrender. So if you have to fight, you got to fight. I mean, I'm not going to lose going down not swinging. That means the games get physical. We had many physical games like this.”

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Wildcats as 13 or 13.5-point favorites.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Under is 6-0 in Wildcats last six vs. Big 12.
                          * Mountaineers are 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
                          * Wildcats are 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 Thursday games.

Xavier Musketeers vs. Arizona Wildcats (-10.5, 135.5)

Beating the Wildcats will be a tough chore but center Matt Stainbrook said the season-long journey has toughened the Musketeers for this moment. “We had a learning curve, and over the season we’ve done a good job of learning from our mistakes and getting a lot better,” Stainbrook told reporters. “I think it’s great that the Big East has been able to test us with some really tough teams, and I think the fact that we’ve grown as a team together has made us really special at this point.” Forward Jalen Reynolds is coming off a big game in which he scored 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting against Georgia State.

Point guard T.J. McConnell had an exceptional game against Ohio State with 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals but wasn’t the lone hero. Backup guard Gabe York also was superb with 19 points and five 3-pointers and the Musketeers will surely pay close attention to him. “I wanted to be aggressive but also know that my teammates were going to find me in transition or throughout the zone with however many seconds were left on the shot clock,” York explained to reporters. “I just did a great job of knocking down shots.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Musketeers are 1-4 ATS in their last five vs. Pacific-12.
                          * Under is 5-1 in Wildcats last 6 neutral site games.
                          * Wildcats are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games overall.
