No. 6 Wisconsin looks to keep itself in the conversation for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament with a win over Michigan State in the Big Ten tournament championship Sunday.

Michigan State faced Maryland in the semifinals of this tournament and won 62-58. This game marked the first time the Spartans didn’t score 70+ points in its past four contests, but it was the first time they held their opponents to under 60.

They’ll need to play that type of defense against a powerful Badgers offense. No. 6 Wisconsin, meanwhile, beat Purdue 71-51. The Badgers have scored 70+ points in four straight games and their offense is clicking right now.

These two teams played in Madison on Mar. 1, when the Badgers won 68-61 as 9-point home favorites. The Spartans have still gotten the better of this series recently, going 7-3 SU and 8-2 ATS in the past 10 games between these teams. They have covered in eight straight and also beat Wisconsin in the semifinals of this tournament a year ago.

Michigan State is 14-8 SU and 11-11 ATS when coming off of a SU win. The team is also 14-6 SU and 11-9 ATS when playing against Big Ten opponents. Wisconsin, meanwhile, improved to 5-0 SU and 3-2 ATS in neutral site games this season. The team is now 18-2 SU versus the conference but a miserable 8-11-1 ATS in those games.

F Javon Bess (Foot) is out for the season for Michigan State and G Traevon Jackson (Ankle) likely won’t play until the NCAA tournament for Wisconsin.

Michigan State has been an extremely balanced team this season, averaging 72.3 PPG (57th in NCAA) on 47.1% shooting (32nd in NCAA) and allowing just 62.9 PPG (81st in NCAA). This team rebounds very well (38.0 RPG, 27th in NCAA) and also knows how to move the ball (17.2 APG, 4th in NCAA).

G Denzel Valentine (14.8 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 4.3 APG) is the most important player for the Spartans. Valentine really struggled against Maryland, finishing with just three points (1-for-8 FG, 1-for-7 3PT) in 37 minutes. The team will need him to turn it around though, as he is an excellent outside shooter (42% 3PT) and just has a great feel for the game overall. He’ll find his teammates when he doesn’t have his own shot and also rebounds very well for a guard. Valentine had 10 points, six assists and five boards the last time he faced Wisconsin and he’ll need to do even better than that on Sunday.

G Travis Trice (14.9 PPG, 5.3 APG, 3.3 RPG, 1.2 SPG) is another very well rounded player in this backcourt. Trice is a very good shooter from deep (37% 3PT) and caught fire against Maryland, finishing with 20 points, four assists and three rebounds in 36 minutes of action. He had 16 points the last time he saw the Badgers and will need to bring that same scoring mentality on Sunday.

F Branden Dawson (11.6 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 1.6 BPG) had 17 points, eight boards and a block against Maryland Saturday. Dawson is a very strong and athletic player and knows how to use his body when he’s in the paint. He’ll need to bring some toughness to the team in this game or they will not have much of a chance of pulling off this upset.

The Badgers offense has been outstanding this season, averaging 71.7 PPG (70th in NCAA) on 48.0% shooting (22nd in NCAA). Wisconsin also plays solid defense, allowing just 55.7 PPG (7th in NCAA).

C Frank Kaminsky (18.4 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 2.6 APG, 1.5 BPG) is one of the best players in college basketball and he’ll need to come out to play against Michigan State. He had one of his best games of the year against the Spartans, finishing with 31 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in 37 minutes of action last meeting. Kaminsky is too big for any of the Spartans to guard one-on-one and if they bring help then he’ll find his open teammates for some good looks.

G Bronson Koenig (7.9 PPG, 2.2 APG) had a career-high 19 points against Purdue on Saturday. He’ll be feeling confident coming into this game and should be able to improve on the four points he scored against Michigan State last game.

F Nigel Hayes (12.0 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 1.9 APG) had an unbelievable game against Purdue as well. Hayes had 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals and did whatever his team needed him to do to earn a victory. He had 14 points the last time he faced the Spartans and will need to continue playing well on the offensive end for this team.

F Sam Dekker (13.2 PPG, 5.5 RPG) had just eight points the last time he faced the Spartans, but he did grab nine rebounds in that game. Dekker is averaging 16.0 PPG over the past two contests and his team will need him to keep scoring. If he can find his game offensively against Michigan State this time around then the Badgers should be looking at a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Sunday's Big Ten Final Tips

The Spartans (22-10) got the better of rival Ohio State and No. 2 seed Maryland in Chicago by beating both in the second halves of their games. Denzel Valentine had 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists against the Buckeyes, but shot 1-for-8 and ended up with just three points and seven assists against the Terps. Travis Trice picked up the slack with 20 points and hit 3-for-5 3-pointers, putting himself in the conversation for Big Ten Tournament MVP honors. Freshmen Lourawls Narin and Marvin Clark, Jr. have put in major minutes in Tom Izzo’s rotation and have changed games with their energy. The 62-58 win over Maryland produced the first under Michigan State has been involved in since Feb. 22, a span of six games. The Spartans lost in Madison 68-61 on March 1 in a game that went over the posted total. That was the lone meeting between these teams this season.

The Badgers (28-3) have a No. 1 seed on their minds, so they’ll be chasing this Big Ten tournament title with great zeal here, especially since they haven’t won the conference tournament since ‘08. Head coach Bo Ryan is well aware that Wisconsin has lost the championship game in this tournament each of the last three times it’s been at the United Center. Senior center Frank Kaminsky remains one of the front-runners for National Player of the Year and went for 31 points and team-highs with three assists, two steals and three blocks in the only matchup with Michigan State. Winning the Big Ten Tournament would help this group match the ’07-’08 team as the winningest in school history. Westgate Superbook installed Wisconsin as 4-to-5 favorite to win the three games in three days. Senior point guard Traevon Jackson remains sidelined with a Jones fracture of his foot that the team is being especially cautious with. The expectation now is to try and have him back by next weekend’s NCAA Tournament action.
