    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Northeastern 72, Wm & Mary 61-- Double OT win Sunday took a lot out of the Tribe, which has still never made it to the NCAAs.

-- Wofford 67, Furman 64-- Gritty 10-seed damn near pulled upset of the month.

-- Gonzaga 79, Pepperdine 61-- Waves have lost 29 in a row to Gonzaga.

-- BYU 84, Portland 72-- Chase Fischer (no relation) had 20 in first half.

-- Manhattan 79, Iona 69-- Teams met in this game the last three years.

-- Summit League-- Watch some of the North Dakota State-South Dakota State title game tonight; you might be surprised how good the basketball is.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) At this time last year, South Florida thought they were going to hire basketball coach Steve Masiello away from Manhattan but it turned out Masiello never actually graduated from college, so USF backed off, and hired Orlando Antigua instead.

Manhattan suspended Masiello until he got his degree, which he did last summer; now he has won another MAAC tournament, will get more national press for the next ten days and will undoubtedly get more offers from schools with deep pockets.

Will he stay or will he go? He'll get offered a lot of money to go.

    12) Meanwhile, South Florida could've overlooked the whole college degree thing last year (Eddie Jordan coaches at Rutgers without one, Scott Walker is running for freakin' President of the United States without one). My question is this: if the gurus at USF had to do it all over again, would they have looked the other way and hired Masiello?

    11) Golfer named Sam Saunders lost in a 5-way playoff at the PGA event in Puerto Rico Sunday, which doesn't seem like big news, except Saunders is Arnold Palmer's grandson. Tough footsteps to follow in, but the young man is improving.

    10) Have you seen the TV commercial with a little kid throwing out the first pitch at a Royals' game, but he doesn't know the catcher is his dad, who just came from from his Army gig in the Middle East? I've seen that commercial 20 times, and it gets me every time. Someday I'll wrack my brain and make a list of my all-time favorite commercials, and that one will definitely be on it.

    9) Sophomore Evan Payne scored 18 ppg for Loyola Marymount this season but is transferring to another school, I'm guessing in a bigger conference, which leads you to believe it'll be Oregon-USC-San Diego State or UNLV. Mike Dunlap is a really good coach at LMU, he was an NBA head coach, but for some reason the kid is leaving.

    8) LA Clippers have now had 175 consecutive sellouts at Staples Center; thats more than four years now and the new owner has added respect to the franchise.

    7) Random prediction: Alex Rodriguez winds up playing shortstop this year; no way he is not still a plus hitter for a shortstop and he has to have as much range as the guy who had been playing there the last few years.

    6) This is the 11th year of our 16-team, keeper fantasy baseball league. 25 guys on a team, you can own minor leaguers, it is fun. Someone picked ARod up Monday and ironically, the guy he cut to make room for him was Josh Hamilton. Our league is not for a lot of money but some fantasy leagues are-- iamgine being in a big money league and having someone as fragile as Hamilton on your team? No bueno.

    5) Houston Texans signed up QB Ryan Mallett for two years; there is a serious shortage of quality QBs in the NFL- they were looking at Brian Hoyer, too.

    4) Eldrick Woods doesn't own the rights to his own name. Seriously. He's opening a restaurant in Florida, but can't call it "Tiger Woods" because Nike owns the rights to anything bearing that name. They're calling it "Tiger's in Jupiter" or something that isounds like that. Maybe they should just call it "Eldrick's"

    3) ESPN should be ashamed of itself, having professional jackasses Skip Bayless and Stephen A Smith on its payroll; they're bad imitations of WWE announcers, stirring the pot while they laugh all the way to the bank. Smith inferred Monday that Chip Kelly is a racist, which now some people will believe, because people believe a lot of what they hear on TV, no matter how stupid it is.

    2) You may not agree with how Kelly is running the Eagles, but for the love of God, the guy isn't a racist, he is just molding his team his way. If he loses, he'll get fired.

People who rant and rave about racism fail to realize that in this world, the only color that truly matters is: green. Do you have money in your pocket or don't you? Sadly, the way Smith and Bayless put money in their deep pockets is by provoking the worst kind of emotions in the people who watch their hideous program.

    1) NFL free agency starts today, which means that'll overshadow the Summit League championship game on SportsCenter, and everything else.

        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Tuesday, March 10

Princeton-Penn is only meaningless game on today's card. Princeton (-7) beat Quakers 78-74 at home in Ivy opener Jan 10, outscoring Penn 32-9 on foul line in game Quakers led by 15 with 13:35 left. Tigers were 32-43 on foul line, Penn 9-14. Princeton won its last three games, scoring 77.0 ppg; they're 3-3 on Ivy road, 1-1 as road favorites. ACC tournament, Greensboro
Boston College won its last three games, allowing 61 ppg, after starting ACC play 1-14; Eagles were 2-7 on ACC road but one of wins was Jan 25 at Georgia Tech (64-62), when BC hit 9-20 from arc. Eagles are 6-3 in first ACC tourney game since joining league; they're 20-54 in ACC in last four seasons. Yellow Jackets are 1-4 in this event last four years; both of their games in LY's event went OT. Tech is 20-55 in ACC with Gregory as coach; they've lost eight of last ten games overall.

Wake Forest outscored Virginia Tech 9-5 over last 1:52 to beat Hokies 73-70 (-7.5) at home Jan 31, but Deacons lost five of their last six games overall, with last four losses all by 13+ points. Home side won both Green Bay-Valpo games this year; Crusaders won 63-59 (-2) at home Feb 13, after Green Bay (-5.5) hung on for 51-50 win at home Jan 23. Valparaiso has only one senior in its rotation; they won this tournament two years ago, are #261 in experience, while Green Bay is #48. Phoenix hasn't won this tourney in last 12 years, despite at least getting to semis six times. Green Bay has three seniors in rotation, with senior 6-0 PG Sykes a force on offense,, but he's not a great shooter.

Am pretty sure BYU is in NCAAs by getting here; Cougars haven't won a conference tourney in last 12 years; they're 10-1 since sturdy big man Kaufusi was inserted in starting lineup- lot of their players are older, having been on missions.

        Summit League, Sioux Falls, SD

Road team won both their games with Robert Morris this year; Terriers won 68-63 at RMC Jan 16 (were down 8 at half), then got beat 67-65 by Colonials 8 days later (RMC scored last four points). ACC tournament Round 1: NCAAB betting cheat sheet
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Boston College Eagles (-2.5)

The Yellow Jackets lost their first seven games in conference play before earning the biggest victory of the season at Miami (Fla.), but won only twice in the next 10 contests. The loss of Marcus Georges-Hunt leaves Charles Mitchell as the leading active scorer (9.6), rebounder (6.9) and field goal percentage shooter (51.3).

Olivier Hanlan, a junior who scored 41 points in his first ACC tournament game two years ago against Georgia Tech, averaged a league-high 21.9 points in conference play this season and 19.4 overall. Graduate student Aaron Brown has added solid support while averaging 15 points and draining 57 from 3-point range – six behind Hanlan’s team high.

            TRENDS:

            * Underdog is 13-3-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
            * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
            * Eagles are 4-0 ATS in their last four vs. Atlantic Coast.
            * Over is 5-1 in Yellow Jackets last six neutral site games.

Virginia Tech Hokies at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (-4.5)

The Hokies beat Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech at home by a combined five points for their only two victories and lost five ACC games by five or fewer. Adam Smith leads the team in scoring (13.7) while shooting 43.1 percent from behind the arc overall, but will have to rebound from a season-low three points versus Miami.

The Demon Deacons won five ACC games – four of them coming after a 1-6 start that included overtime defeats against Syracuse and Florida State, along with a two-point loss at Clemson. Codi Miller-McIntyre leads the team in scoring (14.3) and assists (4.1) while Devin Thomas has contributed 11.7 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds, but averaged four points and 4.5 boards in the last four games.

            TRENDS:

            * Hokies are 1-4-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
            * Hokies are 2-5 ATS in their last seven vs. Atlantic Coast.
            * Demon Deacons are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four handicapping tips for betting NCAAB conference tournaments
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The best betting appetizers to the annual feast known as the NCAA tournament are the various conference tournaments that take place over this week.

These serve as a warmup for the top teams in country, as they jockey for better seeding in the Big Dance. However, for a good number of teams, the conference tournaments represent one final chance to earn a place in the 68-team field by snagging an automatic bid that comes with winning it all.

Many of the traditional handicapping practices still apply. However, given the sudden-death nature of this format, there are a few additional betting tips to take into consideration when wagering on conference tournament action:

              Good programs vs. Bad teams

By now we have a clear picture of every team in the nation and it becomes painfully obvious which ones are good and which one are bad.

While there are exceptions to every rule, don’t start thinking that teams such as Florida at 15-16 (10-19-1 ATS) or Michigan at 15-15 (12-16 ATS) are going to suddenly find their groove and go on a run.

Try and stay away from higher-profile schools that have good programs but are strapped with a bad team this year.

              Season series

A few of the conference tournament matchups will mark the third time that two teams have faced each other this year.

Do your homework and try an uncover situations where a talented team has already lost twice to the team they are facing in the next round. Many times, you will find a couple key factors that contributed to the regular season sweep.

A good example would be if Butler meets Georgetown in the semifinals of the Big East tournament. The Hoyas won both encounters with the Bulldogs this season by a combined eight points. Georgetown is the No. 2 seed in the tournament but beating Butler a third time – especially with the Bulldogs playing so well right now – may be asking too much.

              Ride the trends

While teams will be judged on their entire body of work when it comes to earning a spot in the NCAA tournament, it’s the programs that are hot ATS right now that you want to ride into their conference tournament.

The Davidson Wildcats rolled into the postseason on a nine-game SU and ATS streak in the Atlantic 10, grabbing the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. They get a double-bye and play the winner of La Salle vs. UMass - winning and covering in each of the meetings with those two programs in the regular season.

The Maryland Terrapins have won seven in a row and have covered in five of those contests, including a victory over Wisconsin as a 6-point home underdog.

              Great players vs. Good teams

Every March there seems to be an example of what a great, pro-caliber player can mean to his team.

Connecticut rode Kemba Walker all the way to a national title in 2011 and along the way made some serious money for anyone who went along for the ride, with a 9-1 ATS record in Big East and NCAA Tournament play.

Anthony Davis was the backbone of Kentucky’s title run the following year, leading the Wildcats to a 4-1 ATS run in the final five rounds of the tournament before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Duke's Jahlil Okafor, Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell, Texas' Myles Turner, and Arkansas' Bobby Portis all find their names high on the NBA mock draft boards.

Teams with a great individual superstar tend to trump good teams with no true standouts. These prime-time-players all have dreams of being the next Kemba Walker and leading their team to a national title. But, they also realize they are auditioning for the NBA and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, which can be an even bigger source of motivation.

NCAAB major conference tournament betting breakdown
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

College basketball bettors were teased with a slate of mid-major conference tournaments last week, but now we get down to the nitty gritty. The seven major conferences headline the remaining tournaments this week, in what is truly one of the toughest tests for both sportsbooks and bettors.

With so many games on the go – and quick turnarounds - it’s nearly impossible to keep track of every team in every conference. In order to give you a head start on your handicapping, we highlight the seven major conference tournaments, breaking down the favorites to win, underdog contenders, and live long shots to look out for this coming week.

                American Athletic Conference (March 12-15)

Favorite: SMU Mustangs +140 (24-6, 15-3 conference) – Someone has to win this conference and the Mustangs managed to lose just three games in AAC play. SMU plays great defense - 59.8 points allowed per game – and has great coaching with Larry Brown on the sidelines.

Underdog: Cincinnati Bearcats + 350 (22-9, 13-5) – The Bearcats have momentum on their side, winning five in row heading into the postseason. No. 3 Cincinnati won both meetings with SMU but drew a tough tournament opener, likely playing UConn in Hartford – pretty much the Huskies’ home court.

Long shot: Temple Owls +700 (22-9, 13-5) – The Owls have just two losses in their last 12 games, including a three-game winning run heading into the tournament. However, that pair of defeats came to SMU and Tulsa, the top two teams in the conference. The Owls have struggled to get over the hump in AAC.

                Atlantic Coast Conference (March 10-14)

Favorite: Duke Blue Devils +125 (28-3, 15-3) – The Blue Devils are favorites despite finishing behind Virginia (+180) in the ACC standings. Duke is coming off a statement win in UNC (11th in a row) but hasn’t had much luck in the conference dance, failing to win the tournament crown the past three seasons.

Underdog: Louisville Cardinals +650 (24-7, 12-6) – Rick Pitino is a master at planning his players’ peaks at just the right time. Louisville enters its first ACC tournament off a win against No. 1 Virginia and riding a 4-1 run in its last five games. The Cardinals’ pressure defense - 14.5 forced turnovers/8.3 steals – makes them a threat in every game.

Long shot: North Carolina State Wolfpack +2,500 (19-12, 10-8) – The Wolfpack may have played their way into an NCAA at-large bid with their strong finish to the season, winning five of their last six games. NC State has some big names on its hit list, beating UNC, Duke, Louisville, so it won’t back down from a challenge. The Wolfpack crash the boards for 10.5 offensive rebounds a game.

                Big 12 (March 11-14)

Favorite: Kansas Jayhawks +250 (24-7, 13-5) – The Jayhawks won the Big 12 title but are anything but invincible, losing their final game of the year to Oklahoma and losing to lower-tier teams KSU, WVU, and Oklahoma State in the past month. Leading scorer Perry Ellis is nursing a knee injury and forward Cliff Alexander is benched while under NCAA investigation.

Underdog: Iowa State Cyclones +400 (22-8, 12-6) – The Cyclones are a good price as the defending tournament champs and No. 2 seed. Iowa State has a deep scoring attack, ranked ninth nationally, that makes it very tough to clamp down on just one player. They’ve also showed toughness on the road at the perfect time.

Long shot: Texas Longhorns +800 (19-12, 8-10) – The fact a No. 7 seed is priced this low says oddsmakers fear the Longhorns. Texas is still trying to impress the selection committee and, in the process, save coach Rick Barnes from the firing squad. The Horns are long and athletic, leading the country in blocks (7.9 per game) and sitting fourth in total rebounds (39.8 per game).

                Big East (March 11-14)

Favorite: Villanova Wildcats -150 (29-2, 16-2) – The Wildcats could be the most well-rounded team in college basketball. They went 22-8 ATS during the regular season and boast an average scoring margin of +15.1 points. Villanova could, however, draw Seton Hall in the opener. The Pirates were one of just two Big East teams to beat the Cats.

Underdog: Butler Bulldogs +550 (22-9, 12-6) – The Bulldogs are no strangers to postseason shockers. Butler is playing great basketball heading into the tournament, with wins in seven of its last 10. The Bulldogs rebound well, defending against the 3-pointer and have a deep offense, with six players scoring at least 7.5 points per game.

Long shot: St. John’s Red Storm +800 (21-10, 10-8) – The Johnnies took a four-game winning streak into this past weekend’s one-sided loss to Villanova, and have won seven of their last nine games heading into the Big East tournament. St. John’s is right at home in Madison Square Garden and have an experienced crew with five seniors and three juniors.

                Big Ten (March 11-15)

Favorite: Wisconsin Badgers -110 (28-3, 16-2) – The Badgers showed just how good they truly are by slapping Ohio State across the face with a 24-point win in Columbus Sunday. Wisconsin can grind it out or fill it up on offense, with a deep attack anchored by unguardable 7-footer Frank Kaminsky. Traevon Jackson (ankle) is still a question mark for the postseason.

Underdog: Michigan State Spartans +700 (21-10, 12-6) – This is all on Tom Izzo. The Spartans should probably be bigger underdogs at than 7/1, but Branden Dawson is expected to play after a concussion scare and MSU did close out with two straight wins. Izzo will need to coach up the Green and White, who come in as the No. 3 seed but facing plenty of motivated teams on the NCAA bubble.

Long shot: Maryland Terrapins +900 (26-5, 14-4) – This could be the best deal of championship week. The Terps are the No. 2 seed, ride a seven-game win streak (including win over Wisconsin), and have the easiest path to the final. Maryland is loaded with experience and held opponents to just 60 points over that seven-game span.

                Pac-12 (March 11-14)

Favorites: Arizona Wildcats -200 (28-3, 16-2) – The Wildcats are the cream of the crop in a top-heavy Pac-12, with really just two teams in the mix for the conference crown (along with Utah). Arizona has the second-highest scoring margin in the country at +17.7 points per win and went 20-11 ATS in the regular season.

Underdog: Oregon Ducks +1,200 (23-8, 13-5) – Oregon has quietly become one of the hottest teams in college hoops, with 5-0 SU and ATS run to end the season, including a notable win over Utah. The Ducks actually finished as the No. 2 seed in the Pac-12 (you'd never know by this futures price) and can either outgun their opponents – scoring 76 points per game – or get it done with defense, limiting foes to just 63.8 points during those final five games.

Long shot: UCLA Bruins +1,000 (19-12, 11-7) – UCLA has the talent on paper to contend for the Pac-12 title but can the Bruins beat anyone outside of Pauley Pavilion? UCLA went 2-7 SU on the road during conference play and watches its offense drop from 80.7 points per game to 60.3 away from home. The Bruins won three in a row to finish the season, has wins over Utah and Oregon, and played Arizona tough.

                SEC (March 11-15)

Favorite: Kentucky Wildcats -400 (31-0, 18-0) – Finding a weakness in UK’s armor is tough. If anything, boredom is the Wildcats’ toughest opponent. Kentucky posted an average margin of victory of +21.2 points per game – the highest since Duke +24.7 in 1998-99 - but still only went 16-14-1 ATS. Fun fact: Kentucky hasn’t won an SEC tournament title since 2011 and have just two league crowns in the last 10 years.

Underdog: Arkansas Razorbacks +1,000 (24-7, 13-5) – The Razorbacks are the No. 2 team in the conference but pretty much any team could be in these last two spots. Arkansas, which scores 79 points a night (11th), gets the winner of the Tennessee-Vanderbilt game. It lost to the Vols already and Vandy is on a five-game tear, so it’s no clear road to the final.

Long shot: LSU Tigers +1,800 (22-9, 11-7) – The Tigers closed the regular season with a bang, taking down Arkansas in the schedule finale, and won four of their last five games. Louisiana State stood toe-to-toe with Kentucky in a 71-69 home loss and has some long and athletic size up front, blocking 6.1 shots per game dominating the glass with 39 total rebounds a game.

                        Tuesday, March 10

Roy Hibbert, Indiana - Ques Tues

Hibbert has a sinus infection and could miss Tuesday's game against the Magic.

Pelicans' G Tyreke Evans, doubtful Tuesday

Evans suffered a left ankle injury during Monday's game and is not expected to play Tuesday against the Nets.

Plenty of hot under plays in NBA action Tuesday night

Several hot under plays highlight the NBA action on the board for Tuesday night, including the Dallas Mavericks' incredible under run.

The Mavericks go for their 12 consecutive under when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers. The total is currently sitting at 200.0.

The Indiana Pacers are on an under streak of their own, going under in seven straight games. Tonight they host Orlando, where the total is currently off the board.

And finally Utah sports a 1-9 over/under record in their last 10 games and host the hapless Knicks tonight with a total at 183.5.

Favorites are money on the hardcourt Monday night

Favorites were the side to back in NBA action Monday night, going 6-2 against the spread, cashing at a rate of 75 percent.

That number bucks the trend from over the past seven days, with favorites cashing just 41.1 percent of the time over that span.

Washington and Boston were the only two dogs to cover Monday night.

Nuggets finding ATS success since firing Shaw

The Denver Nuggets have shown more fight since firing head coach Brian Shaw, going 4-1 against the spread since his dismissal.

Denver was just 21-35-1 ATS before firing Shaw, but now say they are enjoying basketball again.

"It's fun," Nuggets' forward Kenneth Faried said after the game. "When you're able to play like this and just space the floor and basically run up and down the court, it's fun. It's exciting. The fans love it, we love it, and we're going to keep trying to play like this."

The Nuggets host the East leading, and the NBA's best, Atlanta Hawks Wednesday.

Jazz facing most chalk of season with Knicks in town

The Utah Jazz are currently 14-point favorites against the visiting New York Knicks, and it's the most the chalk they have faced all season.

Their previous high was when they closed as 10-point faves with Philadelphia in town back on Dec. 27.

The Knicks own one of the league's worst ATS records at 24-36-2 and are coming off an embarrassing 106-78 loss to the Denver Nuggets last night.

NBA roundup: Warriors, Hawks reach 50 wins

PHOENIX -- Stephen Curry scored 36 points and backcourt mate Klay Thompson added 25 as the Golden State Warriors regained the NBA's best record with a 98-80 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.

Forward Draymond Green had 11 points and 10 rebounds to help the Warriors (50-12) reach 50 victories about four hours after Atlanta (50-13) got there by routing the Philadelphia 76ers. The Warriors became the first team since the 2010-11 San Antonio Spurs to reach 50 victories in their first 62 games, and they broke a three-game losing streak in Phoenix.

Curry made seven of 13 3-point field goals, skipping back on defense after one and flexing from a seated position after another. Thompson was 4-for-8 on 3-pointers.

Guard Eric Bledsoe led the Suns with 19 points, guard Brandon Knight had 13. Knight scored all of his points in the first 18 minutes before spraining his left ankle on a drive to the basket with 4:17 remaining in the first half. He did not return.

                        Hawks 130, Kings 105

ATLANTA -- Atlanta cruised to a win while handing Sacramento its fourth consecutive defeat.

The Hawks, who were coming off their own embarrassing defeat to the lowly Philadelphia 76ers, had 42 assists on 53 field goals, made 20 3-pointers and shot 60.2 percent from the floor.

The Hawks had 100 points with three minutes left in the third quarter after point guard Jeff Teague drained a 3-pointer. All five Atlanta starters scored in double figures, led by forward DeMarre Carroll and guard Kyle Korver, who each finished with 20. Teague added 18 points and 13 assists.

                        Clippers 89, Timberwolves 76

LOS ANGELES -- Guard J.J. Redick scored a game-high 26 points, and Los Angeles rolled to a victory over Minnesota. Redick hit 10 of 19 shots from the floor as the Clippers ended a two-game losing streak.

Clippers center DeAndre Jordan finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds, making 10 of 11 shots. Guard Austin Rivers and forward Matt Barnes scored 13 points apiece. Point guard Chris Paul, who was a game-time decision because of a sore knee, managed just two points but handed out 14 assists.

Rookie forward Adreian Payne led Minnesota with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Center Nikola Pekovic added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while rookie forward Andrew Wiggins had 11 points.

                        Nuggets 106, Knicks 78

DENVER -- Forward Kenneth Faried had 19 points and 11 rebounds, forward Wilson Chandler scored 17 points and Denver routed New York.

Forward Will Barton scored 17 points off the bench for the Nuggets, who have won two of their last three home games after losing 10 straight at Pepsi Center.

Guard Alexey Shved scored 19 points and guard Langston Galloway had 14 for the Knicks, who have lost four in a row.

                        Pelicans 114, Bucks 103

MILWAUKEE -- Anthony Davis set a new career high with 43 points as New Orleans held off Milwaukee at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Davis was dominant in all phases of his game. He hit 17 of 23 shots and nine of 11 free throw attempts while grabbing eight rebounds with six assists and a pair of blocked shots.

Milwaukee forward Giannis Antetokounmpo hit 11 of 16 shots and finished with a career-high 29 points. He was one of three players to score in double figures for the Bucks, who shot 52 percent but were just 4-for-15 from beyond the 3-point arc and turned the ball over 14 times.

                        Wizards 95, Hornets 69

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Center Marcin Gortat scored 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting, and Washington rolled to an easy win.

The Wizards were dominant early and led by as many as 19 points in the first half, then pushed the margin to 26 at the end.

Washington shot 51.8 percent from the field overall after going 16-for-23 (69.6 percent) in the first quarter.

                        Grizzlies 101, Bulls 91

CHICAGO -- Marc Gasol led all scorers with 23 points to spearhead Memphis's victory over Chicago Bulls at the United Center.

Gasol's older brother, Pau Gasol, scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Chicago, which was his NBA-leading 43rd double-double and tied his career high set in 2010-11 with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jeff Green added 19 points, Zach Randolph scored 16 points and Tony Allen finished with 11 points for Memphis, which hasn't lost in Chicago since Jan. 1, 2012. Guard Tony Snell led the Bulls with 21 points, rookie forward Nikola Mirotic scored 18 and guard Aaron Brooks added 15 for the Bulls, who played four games in five days and lost the last three.

                        Celtics 100, Heat 90

MIAMI -- Reserve guard Isaiah Thomas scored 25 points, and Boston taking advantage of the ejection of Miami center Hassan Whiteside, defeated the Heat.

Whiteside, who finished with seven points and nine rebounds, was tossed with 2:45 left in the third quarter after he elbowed Boston center Kelly Olynyk.

Boston won for the third time in its past four games. The Celtics trail the Charlotte Hornets and Indiana Pacers by two games in the battle for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Dallas Mavericks (+4, 200)

As it makes a push toward locking up the second seed in the Eastern Conference, Cleveland begins a challenging four-game road trip Tuesday at Dallas. The Cavaliers have dropped three of their last four away from home but are coming off an 89-79 home win against Phoenix on Saturday, riding a balanced offensive attack and matching their second-best defensive effort of the season. LeBron James had eight assists and needs one more to pass Mark Price (4,206) and establish a new franchise record.

James was sidelined with knee and back soreness when Dallas strolled into Cleveland on Jan. 4 and walked away with a 109-90 victory, its fifth straight in the series. That win gave the Mavericks a 25-10 record but they are just 16-14 ever since, even after a 100-93 victory at the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. Monta Ellis scored 31 points as Dallas salvaged the finale of a three-game road trip.

Most shops opened Dallas as 3.5-point underdogs, but that's since been bet up to +4.

                            INJURY REPORT:
Cavs - F Shawn Marion (Early March, hip), C Anderson Varejao (Out for season, Achilles). Mavs - G Devin Harris (Questionable, thumb).

                            POWER RANKINGS:
                            Cavs (-9.4) + Mavs (-10) + home court (-3.0) = Mavericks -3.6

                            ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (40-25 SU, 31-34 ATS, 23-41-1 O/U):
Cleveland is 4-8 on the road against the Western Conference but hopes that a couple of days off will give it some much-needed energy entering the four-game excursion. The Cavaliers were playing their fourth game in five days Saturday and it showed, as they lost much of a 32-point lead in the win over Phoenix before holding on late. "Obviously, four in five nights, you felt it a little in the fourth quarter," said James, who is averaging 10 assists over his last three games.

                            ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (41-24 SU, 30-33-2 ATS, 25-39-1 O/U):
Dallas welcomed back forward Chandler Parsons on Sunday as he returned from an ankle injury, but reserve Al-Farouq Aminu was the difference-maker along the front line. He had 13 points, a career-high six steals, five rebounds and three blocked shots in 20 active minutes, continuing a solid stretch on the defensive end. The Wake Forest product, who also had a season-high seven free-throw attempts, has tallied at least four steals in four of his last five games.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
                            * Cavaliers are 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings.
                            * Mavericks are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
                            * Cavaliers are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 vs. Western Conference.

                            CONSENSUS:
According to Consensus, 62 percent of users are backing King James and the Cavs.
