    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Ndamukong Suh gets $114M ($60M guaranteed) from the Dolphins. Wow.

-- JB Holmes shot a -10 62 Thursday, all he needed to do to win at Doral was shoot even par the last three days. he shot +2 and lost by a stroke to Dustin Johnson.

-- Corey Harrison of Pawn Stars recently lost 192 pounds; good for him.

-- Tim Duncan has played in 1,311 NBA games; Sunday was first time he didn't score a basket in one of them. Spurs won by 11 anyway.

-- Current iron man in NHL? Anaheim's Andrew Cogliano played 602 games in a row

-- BYU.tv televised the WCC's first round; they had commercials on there for some company that sells emergency rations in case the world ends or some other disaster.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

    13) What exactly is Chip Kelly doing in Philadelphia? Last year he dumped his best WR DeSean Jackson; this year he traded LeSean McCoy to Buffalo and now they've let WR Jeremy Maclin leave via free agency, but they re-signed Marc Sanchez. Oy.

    12) There were rumors all over the Internet late last night that 49ers have put Colin Kaepernick on the trading block. If true, that merits a WOW.

    11) William & Mary 92, Hofstra 91 2OT--- Tribe was down nine with 5:00 left, by 5 with 0:50 left but won game on a 3-pointer with half a second left. Tremendous game, lot of action. People who rip on college ball should watch the mid-majors more.

    10) William & Mary has never been in the NCAA tournament, which changes if they beat Northeastern tonight. St Francis hasn't been there either; they have a game at home against Robert Morris tomorrow. Would be cool if they both made it.

    9) North Florida 63, SC Upstate 57-- Before you scoff at the Ospreys, keep in mind this league gave up Mercer LY (they beat Duke) and Florida Gulf Coast the year before (beat Georgetown and San Diego State). The unbridled joy of the students when they won is the best part of Championship Week; Murray State is the worst part.

    8) Albany 60, New Hampshire 58-- Great Danes will be on 11:30 Saturday morning of Championship Week for the third straight year; they won last two years as #4/#5 seeds, underdogs- they're top seed this year. Some great minds have strolled through the halls of Albany's campus, and I went there too!!!!

Don't laugh; sales of tuna subs in the campus center went way down after I graduated.

    7) Coastal Carolina 81, Winthrop 70-- Chanticleers lost to UCLA by 11, Ole Miss by 3; they beat Auburn. Cliff Ellis has taken Clemson/Auburn to NCAAs- they lost to Virginia by 11 in last year's tournament, but were #3 seed in Big South this year.

    6) Nine Altanta pitchers combined to throw a 10-inning no-hitter against Houston Sunday; adding to the oddity was that the game ended in a 2-2 tie, even though Astros didn't get a hit. If I'm paying $30 to see a damn spring training game, I want to see one team win and one team lose. Tickets to Met exhibition games run from $22 to $33 for the better seats.

    5) Looking ahead to Championship Week, North Carolina-Louisville would be a very tough quarterfinal 2:30 Thursday afternoon. Speaking of Louisville, was it me, or does Rick Pitino look very pale, almost sickly? He doesn't look healthy.

    4) VCU-Richmond are crosstown rivals, but they're likely to meet Friday afternoon in Brooklyn in a 2:30 quarterfinal game in the A-14. Spiders won first two meetings.

    3) Red Sox-Mets met in spring training this weekend for first time in four years. It has become a problem for teams who train in eastern Florida, playing too many games against the same teams. Clubs don't like to travel cross-state for games.

    2) My friend John posted on Twitter this weekend than an average college game had 82.7 possessions per team in 1975, when there was no shot clock. Now there are 64.9; I think part of the reduction is that teams fouled a lot more at the end of games back then, when everything was 1-and-1 free throws after the seventh foul.

Coaching is strangling both college basketball and the NFL; reducing timeouts in college hoop would let players decide the outcome more at the end of games and give the game a better flow, which in some cases it badly needs.

    1) By the way, it is March 9 and the NFL is still on the front page, with free agency starting tomorrow. They're a public relations dynamo.

Gaels made 19-35 from arc yesterday- they were up 57-45 at half. Manhattan won six of last seven games, with 79-75 loss to Iona only setback. Iona shot 32% or less on arc in its MAAC losses. Eagles played two guys for 39-40 minutes in tense 58-56 win over IUPUI last nght- they allowed Jaguars 16 offensive boards, were -7 (14-7) in turnovers. North Dakota State won seven of its last nine games; three of its last eight wins came in overtime. Bison has rookie head coach, only one senior in rotation.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Memphis at Chicago
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at Chicago Bulls (+4, 184.5)

Both Memphis and Chicago will be looking for a bounce-back win when they meet Monday night in the Windy City. The Grizzlies opened a four-game road trip Saturday with a 95-89 loss at New Orleans, blowing an 18-point lead in the process. The setback has Memphis - which has split its last eight road games - clinging to a 1 1/2-game lead over Houston in the race for the second seed in the Western Conference with 20 games to go.

The Bulls were holding the second spot in the East before an 0-2 road trip - capped by Sunday's 116-105 loss in San Antonio - helped Cleveland take over that spot with the stretch run looming. Pau Gasol continued to be the one steady presence for Chicago with his league-leading 42nd double-double (23 points, 15 rebounds), but his team committed 22 turnovers, two shy of a season high. Memphis opened the season 21-4 before a 103-97 loss to Chicago at home on Dec. 19 started a four-game losing streak.

                LINE HISTORY:
Most shops opened the Griz as 4-point road faves, which is where it currently sits.

                ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (44-18):
The loss to New Orleans featured a rare off night for both Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph, as the two big men combined for 15 points on 5-of-17 shooting and nine rebounds. The pair had a collective three points on 1-of-8 from the floor after halftime, part of a swoon that resulted in the largest lost lead of the season for Memphis. "If we want to be a good team, a championship team, we can't play like that," Randolph told reporters.

                ABOUT THE BULLS (39-25):
Chicago's 22 giveaways Sunday led to 32 points for San Antonio, which posted the third-highest scoring total against the Bulls this season in a regulation game. One bright spot was the continued surge of power forward Nikola Mirotic, who hit all nine of his free throws en route to 19 points off the bench. Mirotic, who has attempted 49 free throws in five games this month, hit a personal-best six 3-pointers in as many tries to help Chicago top Memphis in the previous encounter.

                TRENDS:

*Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Chicago.
*Underdog is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
*Under is 11-4 in Bulls' last 15 overall.
*Under is 21-8-1 in Grizzlies last 30 overall.

                      Monday, March 9

Clippers' PG Chris Paul, probable Monday

Paul is expected to play against the Timberwolves Monday despite a knee injury.

                      Dogs dominate hardcourt Sunday night

It was a great time to back underdogs in NBA action Sunday night, with dogs going 5-2 against the spread.

Road dogs went 3-1 ATS and home dogs went 2-1 ATS.

San Antonio and Charlotte were the two favorites to cover the spread last night.

Wizards will try to halt ATS skid at nine games

The Washington Wizards will try to put an end to their ATS struggles when they visit the Charlotte Hornets Monday night.

The Wizards have been a team to auto-fade, failing to cover the spread in nine consecutive games and it won't be an easy task, as they visit the hot Charlotte Hornets. Charlotte has won five straight, going 4-1 ATS in the process.

The Wizards are currently 1-point road dogs.

Hawks have Kings' number at the betting window

The Atlanta Hawks have covered the spread in five-straight meetings with the Sacramento Kings and have won 12-consecutive matchups straight up, going 10-2 against the spread over those 12 games.

The two teams will meet at Phillips Arena in Atlanta Monday evening. Books currently have the Hawks as 11-point favorites.

The last time the Kings defeated the Hawks outright was back on Feb. 20 of the 2007-08 season when the Kings prevailed 119-107 and covered as 7.5-point dogs.

This will be the first meeting between the Hawks and Kings this season and the first since Dec. 18, 2013.

                      Hornets cashing during win streak

The Charlotte Hornets are heating up, winners of five straight games and have been money for backers during the streak, going 4-1 against the spread.

The run has improved the Hornets to 30-29 against the spread on the season.

Charlotte will attempt to make it six in a row when they host the Washington Wizards as 1-point home favorites Monday night.

Mavericks cash 11th consecutive Under bet

The Dallas Mavericks hit their 11th straight Under bet after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 100-93 at Staples Center Sunday.

Books closed the total at 202.5 for the Western Conference matchup, making it the eighth time that the total closed at 200 or greater during their streak of Unders.

Dallas' streak started on Feb. 11 with an 87-82 victory over the Utah Jazz, which closed at 200.5.

The Mavs have Monday off and will host the Cleveland Cavaliers Tuesday.

John Wall, Washington - Prob Mon

Wall has an injured thumb but is expected to play against the Hornets on Monday.

Grizzlies have been far from a safe bet this year

The Memphis Grizzlies are owners of a solid 44-18 straight-up record, but they haven't been nearly as productive at cashing tickets this season.

The Griz are an underwhelming 29-31-2 against the spread and have failed to cover in seven out of their last 10 matchups. Pau Gasol and company will seek to buck that trend Monday when they travel to the Windy City for a date with the Chicago Bulls.

After opening Chicago as 4-point underdogs, books have since bumped up the line to +5.5 The total has risen a full point to sit at 184.5 at the time of writing.

Wizards have become the worst bet in the NBA

It's official: the Washington Wizards are the worst bet in the NBA.

Despite having a 35-28 straight-up record, the Wiz are the owners of an ugly 23-39-1 mark against the spread, ranking behind Denver, Sacramento and New York for last in the league.

John Wall's squad is on a nine game ATS losing streak ahead of their contest against the Charlotte Hornets Monday evening. The Wizards are 3-18 ATS in their last 21.

Oddsmakers have set the Hornets as 1.5-point home faves with the total tabbed at 189.5.

NCAAB major conference tournament betting breakdown

College basketball bettors were teased with a slate of mid-major conference tournaments last week, but now we get down to the nitty gritty. The seven major conferences headline the remaining tournaments this week, in what is truly one of the toughest tests for both sportsbooks and bettors.

With so many games on the go – and quick turnarounds - it’s nearly impossible to keep track of every team in every conference. In order to give you a head start on your handicapping, we highlight the seven major conference tournaments, breaking down the favorites to win, underdog contenders, and live long shots to look out for this coming week.

                              American Athletic Conference (March 12-15)

Favorite: SMU Mustangs +140 (24-6, 15-3 conference) – Someone has to win this conference and the Mustangs managed to lose just three games in AAC play. SMU plays great defense - 59.8 points allowed per game – and has great coaching with Larry Brown on the sidelines.

Underdog: Cincinnati Bearcats + 350 (22-9, 13-5) – The Bearcats have momentum on their side, winning five in row heading into the postseason. No. 3 Cincinnati won both meetings with SMU but drew a tough tournament opener, likely playing UConn in Hartford – pretty much the Huskies’ home court.

Long shot: Temple Owls +700 (22-9, 13-5) – The Owls have just two losses in their last 12 games, including a three-game winning run heading into the tournament. However, that pair of defeats came to SMU and Tulsa, the top two teams in the conference. The Owls have struggled to get over the hump in AAC.

                              Atlantic Coast Conference (March 10-14)

Favorite: Duke Blue Devils +125 (28-3, 15-3) – The Blue Devils are favorites despite finishing behind Virginia (+180) in the ACC standings. Duke is coming off a statement win in UNC (11th in a row) but hasn’t had much luck in the conference dance, failing to win the tournament crown the past three seasons.

Underdog: Louisville Cardinals +650 (24-7, 12-6) – Rick Pitino is a master at planning his players’ peaks at just the right time. Louisville enters its first ACC tournament off a win against No. 1 Virginia and riding a 4-1 run in its last five games. The Cardinals’ pressure defense - 14.5 forced turnovers/8.3 steals – makes them a threat in every game.

Long shot: North Carolina State Wolfpack +2,500 (19-12, 10-8) – The Wolfpack may have played their way into an NCAA at-large bid with their strong finish to the season, winning five of their last six games. NC State has some big names on its hit list, beating UNC, Duke, Louisville, so it won’t back down from a challenge. The Wolfpack crash the boards for 10.5 offensive rebounds a game.

                              Big 12 (March 11-14)

Favorite: Kansas Jayhawks +250 (24-7, 13-5) – The Jayhawks won the Big 12 title but are anything but invincible, losing their final game of the year to Oklahoma and losing to lower-tier teams KSU, WVU, and Oklahoma State in the past month. Leading scorer Perry Ellis is nursing a knee injury and forward Cliff Alexander is benched while under NCAA investigation.

Underdog: Iowa State Cyclones +400 (22-8, 12-6) – The Cyclones are a good price as the defending tournament champs and No. 2 seed. Iowa State has a deep scoring attack, ranked ninth nationally, that makes it very tough to clamp down on just one player. They’ve also showed toughness on the road at the perfect time.

Long shot: Texas Longhorns +800 (19-12, 8-10) – The fact a No. 7 seed is priced this low says oddsmakers fear the Longhorns. Texas is still trying to impress the selection committee and, in the process, save coach Rick Barnes from the firing squad. The Horns are long and athletic, leading the country in blocks (7.9 per game) and sitting fourth in total rebounds (39.8 per game).

                              Big East (March 11-14)

Favorite: Villanova Wildcats -150 (29-2, 16-2) – The Wildcats could be the most well-rounded team in college basketball. They went 22-8 ATS during the regular season and boast an average scoring margin of +15.1 points. Villanova could, however, draw Seton Hall in the opener. The Pirates were one of just two Big East teams to beat the Cats.

Underdog: Butler Bulldogs +550 (22-9, 12-6) – The Bulldogs are no strangers to postseason shockers. Butler is playing great basketball heading into the tournament, with wins in seven of its last 10. The Bulldogs rebound well, defending against the 3-pointer and have a deep offense, with six players scoring at least 7.5 points per game.

Long shot: St. John’s Red Storm +800 (21-10, 10-8) – The Johnnies took a four-game winning streak into this past weekend’s one-sided loss to Villanova, and have won seven of their last nine games heading into the Big East tournament. St. John’s is right at home in Madison Square Garden and have an experienced crew with five seniors and three juniors.

                              Big Ten (March 11-15)

Favorite: Wisconsin Badgers -110 (28-3, 16-2) – The Badgers showed just how good they truly are by slapping Ohio State across the face with a 24-point win in Columbus Sunday. Wisconsin can grind it out or fill it up on offense, with a deep attack anchored by unguardable 7-footer Frank Kaminsky. Traevon Jackson (ankle) is still a question mark for the postseason.

Underdog: Michigan State Spartans +700 (21-10, 12-6) – This is all on Tom Izzo. The Spartans should probably be bigger underdogs at than 7/1, but Branden Dawson is expected to play after a concussion scare and MSU did close out with two straight wins. Izzo will need to coach up the Green and White, who come in as the No. 3 seed but facing plenty of motivated teams on the NCAA bubble.

Long shot: Maryland Terrapins +900 (26-5, 14-4) – This could be the best deal of championship week. The Terps are the No. 2 seed, ride a seven-game win streak (including win over Wisconsin), and have the easiest path to the final. Maryland is loaded with experience and held opponents to just 60 points over that seven-game span.

                              Pac-12 (March 11-14)

Favorites: Arizona Wildcats -200 (28-3, 16-2) – The Wildcats are the cream of the crop in a top-heavy Pac-12, with really just two teams in the mix for the conference crown (along with Utah). Arizona has the second-highest scoring margin in the country at +17.7 points per win and went 20-11 ATS in the regular season.

Underdog: Oregon Ducks +1,200 (23-8, 13-5) – Oregon has quietly become one of the hottest teams in college hoops, with 5-0 SU and ATS run to end the season, including a notable win over Utah. The Ducks actually finished as the No. 2 seed in the Pac-12 (you'd never know by this futures price) and can either outgun their opponents – scoring 76 points per game – or get it done with defense, limiting foes to just 63.8 points during those final five games.

Long shot: UCLA Bruins +1,000 (19-12, 11-7) – UCLA has the talent on paper to contend for the Pac-12 title but can the Bruins beat anyone outside of Pauley Pavilion? UCLA went 2-7 SU on the road during conference play and watches its offense drop from 80.7 points per game to 60.3 away from home. The Bruins won three in a row to finish the season, has wins over Utah and Oregon, and played Arizona tough.

                              SEC (March 11-15)

Favorite: Kentucky Wildcats -400 (31-0, 18-0) – Finding a weakness in UK’s armor is tough. If anything, boredom is the Wildcats’ toughest opponent. Kentucky posted an average margin of victory of +21.2 points per game – the highest since Duke +24.7 in 1998-99 - but still only went 16-14-1 ATS. Fun fact: Kentucky hasn’t won an SEC tournament title since 2011 and have just two league crowns in the last 10 years.

Underdog: Arkansas Razorbacks +1,000 (24-7, 13-5) – The Razorbacks are the No. 2 team in the conference but pretty much any team could be in these last two spots. Arkansas, which scores 79 points a night (11th), gets the winner of the Tennessee-Vanderbilt game. It lost to the Vols already and Vandy is on a five-game tear, so it’s no clear road to the final.

Long shot: LSU Tigers +1,800 (22-9, 11-7) – The Tigers closed the regular season with a bang, taking down Arkansas in the schedule finale, and won four of their last five games. Louisiana State stood toe-to-toe with Kentucky in a 71-69 home loss and has some long and athletic size up front, blocking 6.1 shots per game dominating the glass with 39 total rebounds a game.
