    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Purdue 67, Indiana 63-- Surprising Boilers swept Indiana this year.

-- Cal-Davis 65, Long Beach 58-- Aggies have 2-game lead in Big West.

-- Delaware 70, UNCW 59-- Blue Hens were down 10 at the half.

-- Ole Miss 71, Mississippi State 65-- Rebels sweep in-state rivals.

-- Canisius 69, Siena 63 OT-- Griffins had won first matchup by 34.

-- Louisiana Tech 83, UNCC 82 OT-- 49ers covered with trey at buzzer.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Thinking out loud with the weekend here......

    13) First of all, best wishes to Giants' manager Bruce Bochy, who had a procedure to put two stents in to help his heart work better. Get well soon.

    12) Clippers 119, Spurs 115-- DeAndre Jordan was 10-28 on the foul line in this game; he also grabbed 18 rebounds- he should try shooting free throws underhanded.

    11) Ton of trades in the NBA at the trade deadline; Miami stepped out and got Goran Dragic from Phoenix. Pat Riley doesn't sit back and wait for stuff to happen.

    10) There are rumors around that some college administrators want freshmen to be ineligible in football/basketball; this is as stupid as smart people can be.

You make basketball kids ineligible as freshmen and you're pushing them to go to Europe and get paid to play. Can't think of one way that that this is a good idea.

    9) When a coach calls an early timeout, that should count as the first TV timeout; in one game last night, team called a timeout with 16:53 left in the half, then a minute later, there was a TV timeout. This makes no sense; the game loses its flow with so many stoppages. College basketball needs to reduce its timeouts.

    8) You want scoring to go up in college basketball? Call fewer charges; rewarding an defender for flopping in front of a player driving to the basket cheapens the game.

    7) Louisville re-instated point guard Chris Jones; whatever he did to get himself suspended for the Syracuse game is now over; they weren't very good without him. Wonder if they had beaten Syracuse would he have been re-instated?

    6) Speaking of Syracuse, their PG last year was Tyler Ennis, who bolted to pro ball after one season in college. Ennis got traded to Milwaukee yesterday, as the reality of basketball as a business emerged. You wonder how many of these kids regret going to the pros earlier than they should.

    5) MacKenzie Skapski is backup goalie for the Rangers while Henrik Lundqvist is hurt; Skapski grew up as a Canucks' fan-- he was born in Vancouver, the day after the Rangers beat the Canucks in the 1994 Stanley Cup finals.

    4) Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga is in the movie Million Dollar Arm; he plays the part of Popo. Watched part of the movie; it wasn't very good.

    3) Louisiana Tech has a point guard named Speedy Smith; not only is he good, but Tech was the only D-I school to offer him a scholarship. Another school said he could come and try and be a walk-on. A D-II school in Florida offered him, also, but he is a damn good player and Tech might be an NCAA tourney Cinderella.

    2) Racing cars in NASCAR don't have speedometers; guess it wouldn't help for a driver to know he is going 200 mph or so.

    1) NBA players want fewer back/back games but they also wanted an 8-day All-Star break. Hard to have both of these things. I'm guessing they'd be happy with a 64-game regular season, but they wouldn't approve of a 22% salary reduction. Go figure.

            NCAAB

            Friday, February 20

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAB small conferences

Team to watch: Rider Broncos (18-9 SU, 14-8 ATS)

Upcoming: vs. Quinnipiac on Thursday, vs. Niagara on Saturday

Rider has won four in a row and is 3-0 ATS in its last three heading into home dates with Quinnipiac and Niagara on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

A big reason for the Broncos’ recent success is an ability to dominate as frontrunners. They are 15-1 this season when leading with five minutes remaining after going 14-0 in such situations in 2013-14. The Broncos are also 14-1 when leading at halftime and 13-1 when playing from ahead with 10 minutes left.

Seven-foot center Matt Lopez leads the Mid-American Athletic Conference in field-goal percentage (.597) for a team that is second in the league in shooting (.441). Lopez has three double-doubles in his last five games, including a 20 and 19 performance followed by a 27 and 10.

Rider is 14-8 ATS overall this season. Niagara is 7-16 ATS and 0-3 ATS in its last three overall.

Team to beware: Belmont Bruins (16-10 SU, 6-16-1 ATS)

Upcoming: vs. Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, at Tennessee Tech on Saturday

Belmont vs. Eastern Kentucky is a rematch of a Feb. 5 Ohio Valley Conference showdown that did not go well for the visiting Bruins. EKU, a -5 favorite, shot 57 percent—including 62 percent in the second half—to take care of Belmont 81-69 and cover the spread with ease.

That started a string of three straight losses for the Bruins, who halted the slide with a 58-57 home win over Morehead State last Saturday but are still 0-3-1 ATS in their last four.

Turnovers have been a problem for Belmont, which is 10th in the OVC in turnover margin. The team coughed it up 16 times last Wednesday against Jacksonville State and gave up 32 points off turnovers in its loss to Eastern Kentucky.

Belmont is a horrendous 6-16-1 ATS for its 2014-15 campaign. EKU is 8-5 ATS on the road.

Total team: Pepperdine Waves (15-11 SU, 5-11-2 O/U)

Upcoming: vs. Santa Clara on Thursday, vs. San Francisco on Saturday

Pepperdine is dealing with more than its fair share of physical problems and it has contributed to a major scoring drought. The Waves are averaging 50 points in their last three games—all losses—and have put up fewer than 60 points in six of their last eight outings.

Sophomore guard Amadi Udenyi (6.0 ppg, 4.4 apg) is out for the season after rupturing an Achilles’ tendon last Thursday. Freshman guard Shawn Olden (9.5 ppg) has missed two straight contests because of a sprained ankle. Freshman forward A.J. John (2.5 rpg in more than 10 minutes per game) has been out for five consecutive games due to illness.

The under is 11-5-1 in games involving Pepperdine this season, including 2-0 in the team’s last two and 6-2-1 in its last nine. The under is 10-7 in Santa Clara games.

                      Friday, February 20

Anthony Davis, New Orleans - Ques Fri

Davis has a sprained right shoulder which caused him to miss the last two games. He is questionable to return Friday against the Magic.

Top Under referee in Heat-Knicks crew Friday

David Guthrie, the top Under referee in the NBA, will be part of the crew officiating the game between the Miami Heats and New York Knicks Friday evening.

In games with Guthrie officiating, the Over/Under clip is 11-28. The home team is averaging 99.0 points per game, while the visiting team averages 98.1 for an average total score of 197.1.

The total for this matchup is currently off the board.

Totals trend every NBA bettor should keep an eye on

The Under has been the hot play when it comes to the Association, with teams playing below the oddsmakers’ number nearly 54 percent of the time. That clip isn’t exactly storming the sportsbook. But over the past 30 days, NBA games have gone 93-129 Over/Under (58 percent), including a 47-62 O/U count (57 percent) in the two weeks leading up to the All-Star break. Teams have combined to score an average of 197.1 points per game against an average total of 199.3 points in that two-week span – which sits just below the NBA scoring average of 199.8 points per contest.

Like most trends, oddsmakers expect this decisive lean toward the Under to balance out before the end of the regular season. And when it does, it won’t be because of their knee-jerk reaction to the number of game cashing in for the Under. Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based oddsmaking service The Sports Club, says it is business as usual when it comes to setting the totals for nightly NBA action.

“Recent results are the biggest thing for us when making the numbers,” Korner tells Covers. “If there is a trend, we might follow it. But those trends have just as much to do with performance as they do the number, and we follow performance.”

Korner says that most trends come and go and that these leans, one way or the other, do level themselves out. However, his team won’t be simply adjusting their totals based on how many times the Under has come through – unless the books were getting beat up by Under bettors.

“If things are going Under and the books are getting shellacked by the Under, then we would be concerned,” he says. “But just because something keeps coming through doesn’t mean that everyone is betting it. And we’d much prefer the games to keep going Under than Over, we’re glad to hear that. The squares and parlays generally bet the Over and it would be a little problematic if the Over was hitting like that.”

As of Thursday night, only seven NBA teams have paid out more on the Over than the Under - Indiana, Toronto, Atlanta, Minnesota, New Orleans, Phoenix and Boston - and just the Pacers are topping the total at more than 55 percent with a 31-22-1 Over/Under record. On the other end of the scale, there are 13 teams playing Under the number at better than 55 percent, led by Philadelphia (18-35-0 O/U), Cleveland (20-34-1 O/U), Brooklyn (20-32-0 O/U), and Miami (20-32-0 O/U).

That Under run in NBA action hasn’t caught on with the general tourist crowd in Las Vegas, where most shops are still seeing more public money on the Over. According to Nick Bogdanovich, U.S. director of trading for William Hill in Nevada, it would take a lot more than a trend to trim their NBA totals.

“If there was a rule change or if refs all of sudden were calling it really tight, then obviously we would adjust. But that pattern (of the public betting the Over) is still there,” Bogdanovich tells Covers. “The pros control the market and we’re adjusting off what they do. If they start betting the Under more, we’ll have to adjust our numbers a little lower.”

That’s all good and well for bookmakers who draw the majority of their handle from the average sports bettor. But what happens when the bulk of your customer base is considered “wiseguys” and have a more educated approach to betting, especially totals – the most popular play among sharps.

Scott Kaminsky, sportsbook director at online market TheGreek.com, deals with a very wise clientele and says NBA Unders have been the popular play – more popular than the Over – so far this season. While public bettors generally flock to the Over, hoping for an exciting high-scoring game to watch, his customers normally pick and choose their spots.

“They’ve bet the Under more than they’ve bet the Over this year, for sure,” Kaminsky tells Covers. “We’re probably down a little bit (with NBA totals), but we’re tuned into the trends and how the smart guys are betting and we adjust in a timely fashion.”

If you’re looking to jump on this Under trend going into the second half of the schedule, do so with some caution. Over the past 10 seasons, the Over has been the more frequent result – just slightly – following the All-Star break with a 2,211-2,188-53 Over/Under record. Games have averaged 199.5 points against an average total of 198.9 in that span.

Oddsmakers and books will also be trimming their totals when it comes to games with playoff implications down the stretch. The final 10-15 games on a projected playoff team’s schedule could have slimmer numbers when taking on foes also battling for postseason position.

“We take a wait and see approach with a lot of things like this,” says Korner. “And if you weren’t betting the Under, then maybe you missed the boat.”
