    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the top minor league prospects of the Chicago White Sox........

    1) Carlos Rodon, P-- Led NC State to the 2013 College World Series.

    2) Tim Anderson, SS-- Will eventually replace Alexei Ramirez in Chicago

    4) Micah Johnson, 2B-- .296 hitter in 306 minor league games.

    10) Jacob May, OF-- Grandson of Lee May, powerful hitter in the 70's.

    18) Trayce Thompson, OF-- Klay Thompson's brother.

    25) James Dykstra, P-- Has older brother who is big prospect in San Diego

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a frigid night.......

    13) Its so cold out the icicles hanging off my house put parkas on; wind chill as I type this is a chilly minus-26. Spring training starts in three days, so it'll be fun to watch exhibition baseball games, as long as the satellite dish doesn't freeze. Oy.

    12) Wall Street Journal posted that an average NBA regular season game has 7.4 dunks in it; the average All-Star game has 34.2 dunks, which is why I don't watch it. I like to watch guys compete; thats not what an All-Star Game is. Would rather watch a bad college game than the All-Star Game; those guys are competing, at least.

    11) Indiana 90, Minnesota 71-- Hoosiers made 18-32 from the arc; impressive.

    10) Northwestern 66, Iowa 61-- Horrific loss for the Hawkeyes, losing to a team that had lost its previous ten games; TV people kept showing Doug Collins in the stands, agonizing with his son's team as they struggled. Good TV.

    9) Miami-Boston College game was postponed by weather, will be played at 3:00 this afternoon, televised on ESPNU. Hurricanes have been struggling lately.

    8) Hofstra 81, Drexel 57-- Dragons won five of last seven games, with both losses by big scores to Hofstra, which has struggled recently otherwise.

    7) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Kevin Durant:
“You guys (reporters) really don't know shit. To be honest, man, I'm only here talking to y'all because I have to,. So I really don't care. Y'all not my friends. You're going to write what you want to write. You're going to love us one day and hate us the next. That's a part of it. So I just learn how to deal with y'all.”.

    6) Toronto's Kyle Lowry had a dunk in the All-Star Game; he was the only All-Star who hadn't dunked a ball this season.

    5) UNLV is a disappointing 5-7 in the Mountain West and now Rashad Vaughn is done with a knee injury; their seven losses are by a total of 26 points. Tough year for the Rebels, but if Vaughn is healthy next year, they'll be back in NCAAs.

    4) Penn State hoop coach Patrick Chambers flipped out this weekend over a lack of respect he feels his team gets from refs, because they're not a winning team like his rivals are. Its one of the many obstacles that comes with turning a perennial loser into a winner; once they start winning, Penn State will get more respect. Just the way it is.

    3) NFL ref Gene Steratore also works bigtime college hoop games; he had the game at Michigan State Satuirday, one at Wisconsin yesterday. Lot of money in officiating, once you get to that lofty level. He has worked 41 hoop games this year, in addition to his NFL duties.

    2) Then there is referee David Hall, who shows up on my TV almost every night. Hall has worked 78 games in 94 days. Not a bad second job.

    1) You should follow former Dallas Cowboy executive Gil Brandt on Twitter; he is sharp and gives good tidbits, such as the first NBA All-Star Game was back in 1952 in Boston, and the preliminary was a high school game. That sounds better than all the hoopla you see now, more style than substance.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Stephen Curry won the 3-point contest, making 13 in row at one point. Craig Hodges still holds that record, once making 19 3-pointers in a row.

-- To get in golf's Hall of Fame, you need to win 15+ tournament or 2+ majors.

-- Singer Huey Lewis got a perfect 800 on the Math part of his SATs.

-- Steve Lavin at St John's: 18-22 in January, 22-13 in February.

-- Odd that WCC hoop games get blacked out on DirecTV, but I can watch them for free on my laptop. Makes no sense.

-- Mississippi State's team plane made an amergency landing on its way home to Starkville Saturday night, second time in a week that happened on a plane leaving the Columbia, MO airport. Plane landed safely, everyone is shaken but OK.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday

      13) Big West-- Cal-Davis leads by two games after Riverside upset Irvine. Long Beach was 0-2 this week; they look disinterested a lot at start of games. UCSB had 2-0 week, but they'll need star Williams (shoulder) in lineup to make noise in tournament.

      12) Mountain West-- Down year here; San Diego State is 10-3 and leads league. New Mexico blew game at Nevada, bad sign for team that will be looking for their 4th MW tourney title in a row. UNLV lost star freshman Vaughn; they're screwed. Colorado State is now on bubble. This could be a one-bid league.

      11) Mid-American-- Bowling Green is 9-3 with new coach Jans, after being 13-21 the last two years; Ball State (2-10) is only team that doesn't have 4+ MAC wins. Going to be lot of fun to watch MAC tourney. Kent needs Jimmy Hall to bunce back from having mono- they beat Toledo without him Friday.

      10) Missouri Valley-- There's still Wichita and everyone else, but gap has narrowed this year. Northern Iowa is 12-1 in league, but Panthers haven't won an Arch Madness game since 2010. Anything other than a Wichita-UNI tourney final would be a shock. Wichita won tough game at Illinois State yesterday by 6.

      9) AAC-- SMU-Tulsa-Temple in three way battle for top spot. Cincinnati lost home game to Tulane yesterday; game was 19-13 at half. UConn/Memphis are NIT teams. Kid at SMU hit a half-court shot on Game Day yesterday, won $18,000, second time in three weeks a kid nailed a halfcourt shot on national TV.

      8) Atlantic 14-- Four teams are tied at top (9-3); VCU got injured star Graham back yesterday, won at fading GW. Nine of 14 teams in league are 6-6 or better, as bottom four teams have been pummeled (combined 9-38). There is so much parity this year in college ball; not many really good teams, ton of fragile teams.

      7) WCC-- Gonzaga is like UNLV was in the Big West 25 years ago, dominating their league but uplifting other WCC programs like Pepperdine, Portland who have gotten better but not good enough to beat the Zags. St Mary's manages to stay #2, Alydar to Gonzaga's Affirmed.

      6) Pac-12-- Arizona is much the best, but they're tied at top with Utah, which didn't play well in losses in Tucson/Westwood. UCLA is tough at home, soft on road. Cal is on the rise, winning five games in row after a dismal start. Washington fell off the cliff after throwing big man Robert Upshaw off the team.

      5) SEC-- Kentucky is unbeaten but has been challenged. Arkansas/Ole Miss/LSU are next three best teams, everyone else is erratic as hell or just plain bad. Man, Florida is 12-13, 5-7 in SEC, terrible year for Gators-- five of their last seven games were decided by 1 or 2 points.

      4) Big 14-- Wisconsin lost PG Jackson in loss at Rutgers, but is 7-0 since; they've got depth. Again, not lot of great teams here-- home teams are 58-27 SU, making it the #1 conference in America for home teams. Maryland is surprising 9-4 in its first year in conference; they won last two games by total of five points.

Denzel Valentine's shot with 0:02 left won game for Michigan State Saturday on Feb 14, otherwise known as.....Valentine's Day.

      3) ACC-- NC State might be the best 15-11 team in the history of the world; they've beaten Duke/Louisville, lost to Wofford/Wake Forest. Erratic, typical of this season's quality of play. Virginia lost its best player Anderson; doubtful he'll be back for first weekend of NCAAs. Miami has slipped since its win at Syracuse.

      2) Big East-- Villanova-Butler game last night was excellent ball; Bulldogs are back to where they were when they dominated Horizon League. Seton Hall has some internal problems, when a starting guard transfers in February, then the coach praises him up and down on his way out the door. Everyone else is typically erratic.

      1) Big 12-- Kansas is going to win this league for 11th year in row, but Jayhawks did not win conference tourney two of last three years (they've won tourney in six of last nine years). Why is West Virginia in this league? Their shortest road trip is Iowa State; that has to take its toll over the course of a season.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Monday, February 16

Boston College (+8.5) lost 60-56 at Miami Jan 10, getting outscored 10-6 in last 5:01 after rallying from 13-point deficit to tie game. BC lost five in a row, all by 9+ points; they're 2-3 as home dogs, losing all five games by 1-15-9-11-14 points. Miami lost four of its last five games since win at Syracuse, losing last two road games by total of three points at Florida state, Wake Forest. Underdogs covered all five of Miami road games in ACC; Hurricanes are 0-2 as road favorites.

Villanova is 23-2, but one of losses was 66-61 in OT at Seton Hall when Pirates were more cohesive unit (Jan 3). Hall was 12-2 then, they're 3-10 since, losing starting G Sina to transfer. Wildcats shot 31% in loss to Hall and missed 15 FTs (20-35). Villanova is off big win at Butler Saturday in first place showdown; they've won/covered last six games, covering five of six as home faves, with all six home wins by 12+ points. Seton Hall is 3-2 as road dogs. Big East double digit home favorites are 6-6 vs spread.

Virginia has struggled without Anderson in lineup, winning four games in row, but last three by margins of 1-4-5 points, beating Wake Forest in last game 61-60 as 17-point favorites. Cavaliers are 2-4 as home faves in ACC play. Pitt hammered North Carolina at home Saturday, their third win in last four games; Panthers are 1-4 on ACC road, with three losses by 13+ points and lone win in OT at Boston College. ACC double digit home favorites are 6-9 vs spread.

Clemson won five of its last seven games, is 3-1 as home favorite, with three of last four home wins by 13+ points. Tigers covered five of their last six games overall. Georgia Tech lost four of last five games, but none of losses were by more than six points; Yellow Jackets are 3-2 as dogs on road, with only the Virginia loss (57-28) by more than 7 points. Tech is 3-5 vs spread in its last eight games. ACC home favorites of 4 or less points are 3-4 vs spread.

West Virginia lost three of last four games after an 18-3 start; if they do not create easy baskets via turnovers, they have trouble scoring. Kansas is 4-2 on Big X road, losing in Ames/Stillwater, winning at Baylor by a point, at TCU by 3. Jayhawks are #2 in league at protecting ball, which will get tested here. Mountaineers are 7-5 in Big X, but four of seven wins were TCU/Tech games, two worst teams in league. Big X home teams are 11-5 in games where spread was 3 or less points.

Butler (-11) beat Creighton 64-61 Jan 21, forcing 19 turnovers (+10) in a game they made just 4-16 from arc; Bulldogs are off tough home loss last game to Villanova 48 hours ago- they're 3-2 on Big East road, with last four road games all decided by 4 or less points- their last two road wins were both in OT. Creighton is 3-2 in last five games after starting 0-8 in conference; they scored 77+ points in all three wins. Big East home underdogs of 4 or less points are 5-5 vs spread.

Monmouth is 2-3-1 as home favorite this year; they won at Siena by 19 Saturday in last game; they won 57-50 at Marist Dec 4, forcing Foxes to turn ball over 21 times, while Hawks had 20 of their own. Marist lost its last game at home to Siena; they're 4-2 vs spread in last six games as road dog, losing last two overall by 22-2 points after they had won four in row to help negate 0-9 start, MAAC home favorites of 8+ points are 8-14 vs spread.

Tennessee Tech is 0-11 in true road games this year, but covered games at Tennessee/Alabama; they're 1-2-1 as OVC road dogs, with last three road losses all by 8+ points. Tech won its last three games vs East Tennessee State, with Eagles winning 98-83 foulfest LY-- both teams combined to shoot 79 foul shots in game Tech never trailed. East Tennessee is 1-10-1 vs spread as a SoCon favorite this year, its first year back in that league. Buccaneers won last three home games by 2-13-19 points.

Game of the Day: Kansas at West Virginia
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas Jayhawks at West Virginia Mountaineers

Six games stand in between No. 9 Kansas and its 11th straight Big 12 title, although No. 20 West Virginia can do its part to help stop that run. The Mountaineers hope to avoid their fourth defeat in their last five games on Monday when they host the Jayhawks in the first of two meetings over the next 16 days. West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was critical of everything from his team’s performance to the officiating as the Mountaineers fell apart late in Saturday’s 79-59 loss at Iowa State.

“We’ve relied on turning people over and offensive rebounds and we got neither (Saturday). … The way this whole thing is structured from officiating to the whole deal, I think we just stand five guys in the lane and hope they don’t make shots,” said Huggins after the Cyclones shot 18 more free throws than West Virginia. Kansas won for the seventh time in its last eight contests on Saturday, preserving its two-game edge over Iowa State by rallying from a 13-point first-half deficit at home to upend Baylor. The Jayhawks will try to avenge their last trip to Morgantown, where they nearly overcame a 25-point second-half deficit last March before falling 92-86.

              TV:
              9 p.m. ET, ESPN

              ABOUT KANSAS (21-4, 10-2 Big 12):
Perry Ellis (team highs of 13.1 points, seven rebounds) became the 56th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points with 18 on Saturday. Highly-touted freshman Kelly Oubre Jr. (8.5 points) enjoyed his best performance in nearly a month with 18 points, halting a six-game stretch in which totaled 39 – 16 of which came in a Feb. 2 win against Iowa State. Kansas also got solid play from 6-10, 240-pound sophomore Landen Lucas, who tied a career high with nine points and has seemingly worked his way into the rotation over the last four games after not seeing any court time in three of the previous four.

              ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (19-6, 7-5):
Although the Mountaineers have forced at least 16 turnovers in all but one game and lead the country with 21.3, Huggins indicated on his postgame radio show that he could back off his full-court pressure defense. “My frustration is I thought we were going to be a pretty decent half-court defensive team and we’re awful. I think the full-court stuff has (eaten) away at our half-court defense,” said Huggins, whose team ranks 10th in the conference in field-goal percentage defense (45.8). West Virginia is allowing opponents to shoot 57.3 percent from the field while going 1-3 over its last four contests.

              TRENDS:

*Jayhawks are 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
*Mountaineers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
*Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
*Under is 5-2 in Jayhawks last 7 road games.

Arizona a good bet as double-digit faves

The No. 7 ranked Arizona Wildcats continue to be a good bet when they are favorites of 10-points or more this season after they topped Washington State 86-59 as 15.5-point chalk Sunday night.

It was the 17th time this season the Wildcats have been favored by at least 10 points and they have managed an impressive 12-5 record against the spread when that is the case, including the last five in a row.

                Arizona hosts USC this Thursday.

Northern Iowa conitues to be cash for bettors

The No. 13 ranked Northern Iowa Panthers continue to cash for bettors, topping Missouri State 68-57 Sunday night as 10.5-point favorites.

The victory was Northern Iowa's its 13th in a row, but more importantly to bettors the Panthers have lost against the spread just once in their last 12 games, going 8-1-3 ATS.

Northern Iowa has been one of college hoops better bets this season going 14-7-3 ATS and next up for the Panthers is Loyala-Chicago this Wednesday.

Bettors bacing Pitt vs. ice cold ATS Virginia

Virginia may be the No. 3 ranked team in the nation and 13-point home favorites against Pittsburgh Monday night, but bettors think that is way too much chalk for the Cavaliers, who are ice cold against the spread.

A big 71 percent of wagers are backing the Panthers at +13, according to our Covers Consensus, probably due to the fact the Cavs barely escaped with a 1-point win over Wake Forrest this weekend when they were favored by 18.

The Cavaliers have failed to cover the spread in five of their last six games, all as a favorite of 5.5-points or more.
