    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Notre Dame 60, Clemson 58-- 4 of 5 Irish road wins are by 3 points or less.

-- Temple 75, Cincinnati 59-- Owls' first win AAC vs Cincinnati in four tries.

-- Georgetown 86, Seton Hall 67-- Pirates are trending....in wrong direction.

-- Michigan State 68, Northwestern 44- Wildcats should've hired Doug Collins.

-- Colorado State 70, New Mexico 59-- Rams avenge their first loss this season.

    -- Arkansas 101, Auburn 87-- Bruce Pearl doesn't have enough players.....yet.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

    13) Kentucky 71, LSU 69-- Outstanding game; LSU didn't have enough firepower, even after after a 21-2 run that erased a 13-point Kentucky lead. I get the feeling that Calipari wouldn't have minded taking a loss to relieve some pressure on his very young team. Winning the national title is all that matters.

    12) Game was LSU's first sellout in six years, first in an SEC game since 2006; they have a program on the rise- their recrutiing class next year is outstanding. LSU guard Keith Hornsby, a 37% shooter from the arc, is the son of singer Bruce Hornsby.

    11) Wisconsin 65, Nebraska 55-- Second game in a row, Cornhuskers had 13 points at halftime; they've taken a step back after LY's progress.

    10) NBC suspended news anchor Brian Williams for six months, with no pay; what does a guy like that do to earn money now? He probably has some socked away since a guy in his position makes major bucks, but still, what does he do?

    9) Meanwhile, Jon Stewart announced he will be leaving The Daily Show sometime in the next year, after 16 years there. He will be sorely missed; funny man.

    8) John Daly's ex-wife is suing his current fiance for "alienation of affection", which is the Mississippi legal euphemism for "home wrecker".

    7) Ralph Friedgen stepped down as Rutgers' offensive coordinator, meaning the Scarlet Knights will amazingly have their sixth offensive coordinator in six years next fall. Hard to have any continuity that way, but they manage to stay over .500.

    6) Baseball America lists Notre Dame sharpshooter Pat Connaughton as the Orioles' #11 minor league prospect; he is supposedly a very good pitching prospect.

    5) There will be four Atlanta Hawks in the NBA All-Star Game Sunday, which reminds me of last summer, when the A's had six guys in the All-Star Game, only to implode in the second half. Sometimes time off is useful keeping you mentally fresh; All-Star Game will provide a lot of attention those Hawks aren't used to getting and they're hoping their season goes deep into June, when the Finals are held.

    4) There were rumors that Demarcus Cousins' agent was protesting the Kings hiring George Karl as head coach, so much so that Cousins made a statement saying he didn't mind if Karl was named coach. Sounds like a great organization.

    3) Detroit Tigers got (fairly) good news; Victor Martinez had his knee scoped, will only miss 4-6 weeks, as opposed to months. Good news for the Armadillos too, my team in a 16-team keeper fantasy league that is going into its 11th year.

    2) Guy on ESPN.com listed his top 200 fantasy league players, and I was happy to see that five of the top 32 are on my team, though none of them pitch. When you root for the A's, like I do, you can't get attached to players, because they come and go like there's a freakin' revolving door at the Oakland Coliseum.

Having a fantasy team allows you to root for a team where players leave only if I say so, which is more fun. I've said this before, the world would be a better place if I was allowed to make more decisions-- ha!!!!

    1) Can you imagine what the media circus is going to be like next week when Alex Rodriguez reports to spring training in Florida???? It'll be a good day for anyone else to announce bad news, since it'll get buried in the paper by the ARod stuff.

Early NCAAF conference championship odds released

It can never be too early to be looking toward next season and if you're itching to wager some football action, 5Dimes has your back. The sportsbooks released their odds for the NCAAF conference championships Wednesday.

      ACC:

With Jameis Winston leaving the Florida State Seminoles, there are new favorites atop the conference. With the hopes that QB Deshaun Watson stays healthy next season, Clemson has opened as +250 favorites.

      Big 12:

One of the toughest conferences in college football has a tight race between TCU (+200) and Baylor (+225) for top spots. Just north of Texas, both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are waiting to pounce (+500)

      Big Ten:

It should not be a surprise that Ohio State is a heavy -150 favorite to take home the Big Ten title next season. Aside from being the consensus favorite at books to win the National Championship, they are returning one of the top Heisman contenders in RB Ezekiel Elliott.

      Pac-12:

Despite losing QB Marcus Mariota to the NFL, Oregon is still the favorite (+200) in the Pac-12. No conference boasts more teams with odds +900 or better as the usually high-octane conference could be a dogfight.

      SEC:

Sure the Crimson Tide (+250) will always be favored in the SEC as long as Nick Saban is there, but it's not going to be a runaway. Georgia, Auburn and Ole Miss all have very close +400 odds behind 'Bama.

Top 25 roundup: La Salle tops VCU in 2 OTs

RICHMOND, Va. -- La Salle built a six-point lead in the second overtime and withstood several VCU runs to escape with a 74-69 victory Wednesday.

Guard Jordan Price scored 34 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Explorers, who earned their first road win against a ranked team since knocking off the Rams two years ago. La Salle (14-10, 6-5 Atlantic 10) got 12 points apiece from guard Cleon Roberts and forward Jerrell Wright.

Guard JeQuan Lewis led VCU (18-6, 8-3) with 26 points. Guard Melvin Johnson added 13 points.

Virginia 51, North Carolina State 47

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Guard Malcolm Brodgon scored 15 points, including four free throws in the final minute, and the second-ranked Cavaliers defeated the Wolfpack.

North Carolina State guard Trevor Lacey hit a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left but missed a potential tying layup with eight seconds to go. Center Mike Tobey, who made two free throws with seven seconds to play, added 11 points, and forward Anthony Gill had nine points for first-place Virginia (22-1, 10-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Lacey finished with 14 points for N.C. State (14-11, 5-7), which lost for the fifth time in the last six games.

              Villanova 74, Providence 68

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Daniel Ochefu piled up 19 points and nine rebounds to help the sixth-ranked Wildcats pick up their fifth straight win and stave off the feisty Friars. The junior forward's big night on both ends gave the Wildcats (22-2, 9-2 Big East) their third road win in conference play.

Providence (17-8, 7-5) lost its second game in a row. The Friars fell for the third time in four games.

Junior guard Ryan Arcidiacono scored a team-high 20 points and senior guard Darrun Hilliard II had 16 for the Wildcats, who overcame a poor first half to shoot 50 percent on the night (20-for-40). Providence senior forward LaDontae Henton scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half.

              Louisville 69, Pittsburgh 56

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Junior forward Montrezl Harrell picked up his 21st double-double, and the ninth-ranked Cardinals received some help from the bench for the first time in weeks.

Harrell, who hit 12 of 17 from the field, finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Terry Rozier added 22 points and 10 rebounds for Louisville (20-4, 7-3 ACC). However, it was the play of the bench that sparked a 22-2 surge and put the Cardinals in control late in the game. Louisville reserves hadn't scored a point since Jan. 31.

Forward Michael Young scored 16 points to lead Pittsburgh (16-9, 5-6).

Northern Iowa 83, Illinois State 64

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Forward Seth Tuttle scored a game-high 23 points, including 18 in the first half, and the 13th-ranked Panthers earned their 12th consecutive Missouri Valley Conference victory.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead and were up 50-33 at halftime behind 58 percent shooting from the field, including 41 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (seven of 17).

Illinois State (15-10, 7-6 MVC) crept no closer than 13 points in the second half. Northern Iowa boosted the margin to 23 points with eight minutes remaining.

Wichita State 74, Indiana State 57

WICHITA, Kan. -- The 15th-ranked Shockers won their 30th consecutive home game and stayed tied atop the Missouri Valley Conference.

Junior guard Fred VanVleet scored 21 points, including 14 in the first half, for Wichita State (22-3, 12-1). Senior forward Darius Carter added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Junior guard Devonte Brown led Indiana State (12-13, 8-5) with 10 points. The Sycamores remained alone in third place in the MVC after fourth-place Illinois State lost at No. 13 Northern Iowa.

              Maryland 68, Indiana 66

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Swingman Dez Wells and guard Melo Trimble scored 18 points apiece as the 19th-ranked Terrapins held on to beat the Hoosiers.

Indiana guard Yogi Ferrell finished with 23 points, but he missed a 3-pointer with about four seconds left and a 2-point try at the buzzer.

The Terps (20-5, 8-4) improved to 15-1 at home this season, including 6-0 against conference foes. Maryland is tied for second in the conference with Ohio State, which beat Penn State earlier Wednesday.

              West Virginia 76, Kansas 72

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The 21st-ranked Mountaineers squandered a late 10-point lead before regaining their poise in the final minutes for the win.

Reserve forward Brandon Watkins scored a career-high 14 points and point guard Juwan Staten added 11 despite missing four late free throws for West Virginia (19-5, 7-4 Big 12), which swept the season series.

Forward Nino Williams scored 22 points for Kansas State (12-13, 5-7), which dropped its fifth straight despite taking the lead in the final three minutes with a clutch comeback.

Ohio State 75, Penn State 55

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Forward Sam Thompson scored 22 points and guard D'Angelo Russell had 17 as the 23rd-ranked Buckeyes defeated the Nittany Lions.

Thompson shot 6-for-11 from the floor and made three of five 3-pointers. Russell had seven assists and six rebounds. The Buckeyes (19-6, 7-4 Big Ten) won for the fifth time in six games to maintain second place in the conference.

Senior guard D.J. Newbill had 16 points for Penn State (15-10, 3-9), and junior forward Brandon Taylor finished with 11 points after failing to score in the first half.

Game of the Day: Cavaliers at Bulls
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Chicago Bulls (+1, 201.5)

Both Cleveland and host Chicago are prepared to be without key members of their starting lineup when they meet Thursday in the final NBA game before the All-Star break. The Cavaliers, who have won 14 of their last 15 after a 113-93 rout of Miami on Wednesday, lost forward Kevin Love to a corneal abrasion in the third quarter and his status for Thursday is unclear. Love will be re-evaluated but is expected to make the trip to Chicago.

The Bulls have won three in a row, including a 104-86 victory over Sacramento on Tuesday in which standout shooting guard Jimmy Butler was knocked out with a shoulder injury. Butler underwent an MRI on Wednesday that confirmed nothing more than a strain, which left him day-to-day and put his status for Sunday's All-Star Game up in the air. Chicago is 2-1 without Butler this season, the one loss coming at home against Cleveland on Oct. 31.

                    8 p.m. ET, TNT

                    LINE HISTORY:
The Bulls opened as 1-point home dogs. The total opened at 201.5

                    INJURY REPORT:
                    Cavaliers - N/A Bulls - G Jimmy Butler (Ques-Shoulder), F Kirk Hinrich (Ques-Toe)

                    ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (33-21 SU, 25-29 ATS, 19-34-1 O/U):
Love's departure was a non-factor against Miami as Cleveland had plenty of contributions from its other big men. Timofey Mozgov and Tristan Thompson combined to score 37 points on 16-of-19 shooting while grabbing a total of 16 rebounds to help control the Heat on the interior. LeBron James had a team-high 10 boards for the Cavaliers, who had a 43-36 advantage on the glass and outscored Miami in the paint by a 52-32 margin, two categories in which they've dominated the Bulls in the prior two meetings this season.

                    ABOUT THE BULLS (33-20 SU, 24-29 ATS, 25-27-1 O/U):
Just as the Cavaliers filled the gaps without Love, Tony Snell picked up where Butler left off and finished with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Snell is 11-for-19 from 3-point distance over his last three games, has recorded six of his seven double-digit efforts in the past month and impressed his head coach on Tuesday with his ability to score while maintaining a solid defensive effort on Sacramento's Rudy Gay. "[Defending a scorer] puts enormous pressure on you and I thought he played well on both sides of the ball."

                    TRENDS:

*Cavaliers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. NBA Central.
*Under is 6-0 in Cavaliers last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
*Under is 5-0 in Bulls last 5 overall.
*Favorite is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.

                    CONSENSUS:
According to Consensus, 57 percent of bettors are backing the favored Cavs.

Under cashes in last full day before All-Star break

It looks like plenty of teams were eager to get to the All-Star break, as the under cashed big time, going 9-3 in the last full night of NBA action before the break.

The only games to go over were Sacramento-Milwaukee, Indiana-New Orleans and Miami-Cleveland.

There is just one game on the schedule tonight before the All-Star break officially begins with the Cavaliers visiting the Chicago Bulls. The total is currently at 201.5.

Cavaliers' PF Kevin Love, questionable Thursday

Love left Wednesday's game against the Heat due to a right corneal abrasion and is questionable to play Thursday against the Bulls.

NBA roundup: Spurs surge into break with win

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Everyone around the NBA better watch out. The defending champs are heating up heading into the All-Star break.

The San Antonio Spurs were just five games over .500 in late December, but they have gotten healthy and found their rhythm lately, winning 15 of their last 20 games. They avenged a one-point home loss to Detroit last month by rolling to a 104-87 victory over the Pistons on Wednesday night at The Palace.

Shooting guard Danny Green had 19 points, including five 3-pointers, along with eight rebounds and four assists for the Spurs. Point guard Tony Parker contributed 17 points and shooting guard Manu Ginobili added 13 points and center Aron Baynes chipped in 12.

Point guard D.J. Augustin's 22 points and six assists led the Pistons. Shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope tossed in 20 points and center Andre Drummond added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Forward Dirk Nowitzki was the only other Mavs forward to score in double figures with 15 points and 14 rebounds. He didn't surpass 10 points until there was just under five minutes left in the game to give Dallas a 79-69 lead.

Point guard Trey Burke, now coming off the bench, hit four 3-pointers and had a team-high 16 points for the Jazz.

It was the third game in the last six Jordan had produced at least 20 points and 20 boards. Forward Jamal Crawford and guard J.J. Redick scored 20 points apiece for the Clippers (35-19), who defeated the Rockets (36-17) for the sixth consecutive time. Point guard Chris Paul finished with 12 points and 12 assists. Thursday, February 12

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAB small conferences

Team to watch: Samford Bulldogs (12-14 SU, 14-6-1 ATS)

Upcoming: vs. Citadel on Thursday, at Chattanooga on Saturday

Samford lost to its two upcoming opponents, the Citadel and UT-Chattanooga, earlier this season. But a completely different Samford squad has been on display of late.

The Bulldogs started the season 7-14, a stretch that included a six-game losing streak in January—complete with their setbacks against the Citadel and UTC. Suddenly, however, they have won five in a row.

A young staff and a young roster may have been part of the reason why it took a while to gel. Now Samford’s surge under first-year head coach Scott Padgett is its longest since 2005-2006. Freshman Christen Cunningham can be thanked. On Tuesday he was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for a fourth time this season and he has scored in double-figures in six straight outings.

Samford is 14-6-1 ATS this season, including 5-0 ATS in its last five overall.

Team to beware: Wright State Raiders (11-13 SU, 8-13 ATS)

Upcoming: vs. Illinois-Chicago on Thursday, vs. Youngstown State on Sunday

Wright States has lost six of its last seven games and it’s not difficult to figure out why. Leading scorer and rebounder J.T. Yoho (16.1 ppg, 6.7 apg) has missed six consecutive contests due to a foot injury and he will likely be out until late February. Fellow forward Steven Davis (7.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg) has been sidelined for the past 10 games—also with a foot injury.

The physical problems have forced head coach Billy Donlon to utilize a four-guard lineup. With matchup problems on defense, Wright State has given up an average of 81 points in its last three games.

“It is hard to guard midgets running around,” Cleveland State head coach Gary Waters said after his squad hammered the visiting Raiders 88-72 last Saturday.

Wright State is 8-13 ATS for its 2014-15 campaign. It is 0-3 ATS in its last three and 1-6 ATS in its last seven.

                            Total team: Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans (9-14 SU, 8-6-1 O/U)

Upcoming: at Appalachian State on Thursday, vs. Georgia Southern on Saturday

The Arkansas-Little Rock defense has taken a serious hit since James White went down with a stress fracture. White, who is leading the team in rebounding and has blocked 25 shots (including five games with at least three swats), is out for the season with a stress fracture.

A 6’8’’, 220-pound forward, White last played on Jan. 10 when the Trojans beat Appalachian State 64-46. They have since given up at least 64 points in eight straight games, and 75 or more in three of those eight contests.

At the same time, ALR is scoring plenty because its 10.7 turnovers a game are the fewest in the Sun Belt Conference.

The over is 10-3 in games involving the Trojans this season, including 6-0 in their last six overall. The over is 3-1 in both Appalachian State’s and Georgia Southern’s last four outings.
