    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Boston Red Sox:

    1) Blake Swihart, C-- Defense is ahead of offense, at this point.

    2) Henry Owens, P-- Was starter for US team in Futures Game LY.

    3) Rusney Castillo, OF-- Cuban defector got a $72.5M contract last summer

    5) Brian Johnson, P-- Was 10-2, 1.75 in 20 AA starts last season.

    12) Sam Travis 1B-- Indiana alum hit .313 in his first pro season.

    17) Sean Coyle 2B/3B-- Hit 16 homers in AA LY, but has been injury-prone.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

    13) Padres signed James Shields to a 4-year deal worth $72-76M; Shields has the most innings pitched (1,785.2) of any pitcher since 2007 (223+ IP a year).

    12) Spurs 95, Pacers 93-- Gregg Popovich gets his 1,000th win as an NBA coach; San Antonio was down 14 points after the third quarter. How would you like to be the reporter who asked the sometimes-surly Popovich what 1,000 wins means to him?

Popovich is the ninth NBA coach with 1,000 wins; he has the second-best winning percentage of those nine. Only Phil Jackson's is better.

    11) RIP, Mr Ed Sabol, founder of NFL Films, who made the NFL a lot more fun for a lot of us. Miking players, coaches and putting highlights to music were strokes of genius that helped the NFL become as popular as it is.

    10) Oklahoma 94, Iowa State 83-- Game was 46-all at half, an entertaining game to see; Cyclones are struggling away from home. Oklahoma has now won five in a row.

    9) Oregon gave football coach Mark Helfrich a new contract for five years, $17.5M; he is 24-4 in two years, with a Rose Bowl win this season.

    8) Helfrich's new QB in 2015 will be Eastern Washington transfer Vernon Adams, which will be interesting; Ducks open the '15 season against Eastern Washington.

    7) Lousy day in sports talk radio; someone in New York sent Knicks' owner James Dolan a nasty e-mail telling him low lousy he is, Dolan sent the guy an angrier e-mail in reply and somehow it all became public. Not only were the NYC shows talking about it, the national media was too. Dolan's a billionaire; just hit the delete key.

    6) Virginia Tech 65, Georgia Tech 63-- Hokies came from behind to win at the end, a game played with great enthusiasm but not tremendous skill. I'm watching this game and I'm like, "This is ACC basketball???" Football has damaged ACC hoop; too many teams, too many smallish crowds at the bottom of this league.

Serious question; where does Syracuse basketball go when Jim Boeheim retires? With probation looming and Boeheim over 70, it could happen sooner than later, but they're in the ACC because of football and the money it generates. The basketball fanbase is spoiled; the next coach has very big shoes to fill. It won't be easy.

    5) Sacramento Kings stupidly fired coach Mike Malone when they were 11-13; now they're 18-32 and changing coaches again, with George Karl apparently headed to northern California. Owner must have a lot of money to spend.

    4) Dan Haren has a $10M contract to pitch this season, and said he only wanted to play for a west coast team, but the Dodgers traded him to Miami anyway. Haren did not say much, but did you really think he'd pass up $10M to make 25-30 starts and travel first-class all summer while living half the time in South Beach? He'll be with the Marlins this season, no surprise to anyone. Miami might be pretty good.

    3) Clippers 115, Mavericks 98-- DeAndre Jordan had 22 points, 27 rebounds with Blake Griffin sidelined. big win for LA, ending a losing skid before the All-Star break. It is very, very difficult to get 27 rebounds in any basketball game.

    2) I'm not a big NASCAR fan but I like watching it now and then because its fun to watch pit crews do their work and the announcers are so enthusiastic and its amazing that cars drive so close to each other while going so fast without crashing all the time.

Plus, the start of NASCAR means one big thing to me: winter is almost over. The last couple weeks around have totally sucked weather-wise; 30 inches of snow, few more nights with temps below zero. Spring training and NASCAR need to start and soon..

    1) It feels strange to follow a baseball off-season where the White Sox, Padres spent a lot more money than the Bronx Bombers. What the hell is going on out there????

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- No. 4 Duke avoided a big upset Monday night and won for the seventh time in eight games, beating pesky Florida State 73-70.

Led by game-high 26 points from guard Quinn Cook and a double-double from guard Tyus Jones, who scored 16 points and dished out 12 assists, the Blue Devils recovered from a poor shooting start to beat the Seminoles for the third straight time.

However, this one wasn't easy for Duke (21-3, 8-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). After the Blue Devils held a 10-point lead with five minutes remaining in the game and appeared ready to cruise to the finish line, the Seminoles roared back and found themselves down 70-69 with 11.9 seconds left. Duke outshot Florida State from the foul line in the end to seal the win.

The Seminoles (13-12, 5-7) were led by a career-high 23 points from guard Devon Bookert.

Guard Marco Belinelli's jumper from the left baseline with 2.1 seconds remaining capped a furious fourth-quarter rally that gave the Spurs and Popovich -- who was born in East Chicago, Ind., and attended high school in Merrillville, Ind. -- a 95-93 victory over the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Monday.

After being outscored 34-18 in the third quarter, San Antonio (33-19) outscored the Pacers 30-14 during the final period.

Down 79-65 with 12 minutes remaining, the reigning NBA champions pulled even at 91 on two free throws by guard Tony Parker with 3:13 remaining, capping a 9-0 run.

Parker led the Spurs with 19 points, forward Tim Duncan added 15 and Belinelli finished with 12. Guard Rodney Stuckey led Indiana (20-33) with 18 points, and forward C.J. Miles had 13. Forward David West had 10 points and a season-high 18 rebounds.

                    Wizards 96, Magic 80

WASHINGTON -- Guard Rasual Butler scored 15 points, and guard John Wall nearly recorded a triple-double as Washington dominated the second half for a victory over Orlando.

Center Marcin Gortat had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards (33-20). Washington never trailed, outrebounded Orlando 53-33 and led by as many as 20 points in the second half despite playing without guard Bradley Beal. Forward Nene scored 14 points with five dunks.

Wall had nine points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in Washington's second straight win. The two-time All-Star missed a floater in the final minute.

                    Warriors 89, 76ers 84

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said before his team faced Golden State that the Warriors' bench would be capable of contending for a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Golden State's reserves then proved his point, accounting for all the points in a pivotal 14-2 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter to propel the Warriors to a victory over the 76ers.

Reserve guard Leandro Barbosa and backup forward Marreese Speights, a former Sixer, each scored six points in that spree, giving Golden State an 81-63 lead with 9:04 left. Philadelphia drew no closer than four thereafter.

Guard Stephen Curry had 20 points for the Warriors, who have won five of six to improve to 41-9, the best record in the NBA.

                    Heat 109, Knicks 95

MIAMI -- Forward Chris Bosh scored 32 points, and Miami snapped its three-game losing streak, defeating New York at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Bosh scored 12 fourth-quarter points for Miami, which won for the fifth consecutive time in its series against New York. Bosh posted his sixth 30-plus-point game of the season. As a team, Miami enjoyed its second-highest scoring game of the season.

The Knicks, who fell to an NBA-worst 10-42, lost their fourth consecutive game. They are 3-23 on the road.

New York All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony (sore left knee) returned after a one-game absence and scored 26 points in 32 minutes. However, Anthony appeared to re-injure his knee, and he left the game midway through the fourth quarter. He did not return.

                    Hawks 117, Timberwolves 105

MINNEAPOLIS -- With a full complement of players finally healthy, Minnesota entered Monday's game riding a season-high, three-game winning streak.

The best team in the Eastern Conference put a stop to that.

Hawks forward Al Horford scored a season-high 28 points, and forward DeMarre Carroll chipped in a career-high 26 points as Atlanta topped Minnesota at Target Center.

Atlanta forward Paul Millsap added 19 points. One night earlier against the Memphis Grizzlies, Millsap was held to a season-low four points on 2-of-10 shooting. He finished Monday's game 8-for-13 from the field and added nine rebounds and seven assists.

                    Jazz 100, Pelicans 96

NEW ORLEANS -- Forward Gordon Hayward scored a game-high 32 points, including eight in the final 69 seconds, to spark Utah to a victory over short-handed New Orleans at the Smoothie King Center.

Hayward had 25 points in the second half as the Jazz (19-33) erased a 52-42 halftime deficit. Forward Derrick Favors added 18 points for Utah.

The Pelicans (27-25) played without injured forwards Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson. Guard Eric Gordon scored a team-high 31 points, including 7 of 8 from long range, and guard Tyreke Evans scored 18. But Gordon and Evans combined for 11 of the Pelicans' 15 turnovers.

                    Bucks 103, Nets 97

MILWAUKEE -- Shooting guard Jared Dudley scored 19 points and Milwaukee overcame a 17-point second-quarter deficit in a victory over Brooklyn at the Bradley Center.

Forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, named the Eastern Conference's Player of the Week earlier in the day, continued his impressive run with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists despite not playing in the fourth quarter.

Milwaukee also got 15 off the bench from shooting guard O.J. Mayo and 10 from center John Henson.

The Bucks shot just 41 percent for the game but went 12-for-22 from the field and scored 12 points off eight Brooklyn turnovers in the third to flip a 52-47 halftime deficit into an 11-point lead heading into the final quarter.

                    Clippers 115, Mavericks 98

DALLAS -- DeAndre Jordan and Los Angeles can finally go home, and they do so on a high note.

The center demolished depleted Dallas for 22 points, an NBA season-high 27 rebounds and three blocked shots, leading the travel-weary Clippers to a victory at the American Airlines Center.

Los Angeles closed out its drama-filled road trip with a 3-5 record and without All-Star forward Blake Griffin, who underwent surgery Monday to remove a staph infection in his right elbow. He is expected to miss at least three weeks.

In the Mavs, the Clippers found a team just as desperate to reach the All-Star break in 48 more hours. The Mavs were already without point guard Rajon Rondo for a fifth consecutive game due to a fractured orbital bone, and they lost both center Tyson Chandler and leading scorer Monta Ellis in the opening four minutes of the game.

Chandler twisted his left ankle after barely playing 90 seconds, and Ellis left after bruising his hip after just four minutes.

                    Thunder 124, Nuggets 114

DENVER -- Forward Kevin Durant scored 40 points and tied a career high with seven made 3-pointers and Oklahoma City beat reeling Denver.

Guard Russell Westbrook had 26 points and nine assists and rookie Mitch McGary had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Oklahoma City, which has won four of five.

The Thunder (27-25) is trending toward the playoffs while the Nuggets have become the sure win on every opponent's schedule. Denver has lost six in a row and 13 of 14 to become lottery contenders for the last half of the season.

Home court used to be a safe haven for the Nuggets but they have lost six straight at Pepsi Center. Forward Kenneth Faried had 22 points and 10 rebounds and guard Ty Lawson had 22 points and nine assists for Denver (19-33).

                      NBA

                      Tuesday, February 10

When East meets West: The smartest bet in the NBA you're overlooking

The NBA’s All-Star Weekend is almost here, headlined by the annual showcase of East versus West which takes place in Brooklyn this Sunday.

The West has long been considered the dominant conference, and the records show that. The Western Conference is a much deeper pool of teams while in the Eastern Conference, clubs can scrap into the playoffs with a winning percentage well below .500.

For the most part, the West has beaten up on Eastern opponents this season. Heading into Monday’s action, the East is just 128-178 SU in non-conference games – a .418 winning clip – this season. However, due to the general consensus that the West is a much better conference, there’s a slight overreaction to the East-v-West spreads with the East showing value at 155-144-7 ATS – a near 52 percent ATS win rate.

That especially held true this weekend, which featured 12 non-conference games between Friday and Sunday. Eastern Conference teams more than held their own, going 7-5 SU and 8-4 ATS.

Eight of those games featured the Eastern Conference representative as the home team, with those host posting a 6-2 SU and 7-1 ATS mark versus Western visitors. Eastern teams on the road at Western venues were just 1-3 SU and ATS. On the season, Eastern Conference teams are 52-101 SU and 75-71-7 ATS in non-conference road games and 76-77 SU and 80-73 ATS at home to Western rivals.

While a 52 percent ATS rate isn’t exactly the Midas Touch of NBA betting, the 58 percent Under rate in those non-conference clashes is a lot more appealing to basketball bettors. East-versus-West games have gone 126-174-6 Over/Under this season heading into Monday, including a 4-8 O/U record in non-conference games the last three days.

The rate of Unders increases when Eastern Conference teams go West, with a 58-91-4 Over/Under mark – a 61 percent winning percentage for the Under. In the four East-at-West games this weekend, three stayed below the total.

Here are some teams providing solid ATS or O/U value in conference games:

Nuggets NBA's worst bet thanks to recent skid

Thanks to the Denver Nuggets 124-114 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder Monday night, they have lost and failed to cover the spread in six consecutive games, making them the worst bet in the NBA.

The Nuggets are 3-10 against the spread in their last 13 games, dropping them to an Association worst 19-30-3 ATS mark for the season.

Denver plays the second game of a back-to-back Tuesday night in Los Angeles to face off against the Lakers. The Nuggets are currently 2.5-point road dogs.
