    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Hawks 105, Wizards 96-- Atlanta starts another winning streak.

-- Providence 74, Georgetown 71-- Friars don't often win in Washington.

-- Purdue 60, Ohio State 58-- Boilers have now won four games in row.

-- Oklahoma State 65, Texas 63 OT-- Longhorns have lost four in a row.

-- Wichita State 62, Bradley 59-- Shockers are stumbling a little bit.

-- Warriors 128, Dallas 114-- Curry scored 51; Golden State scored 70 points in the second half, after being down 20 in first half.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.....

    13) Syracuse pulled the plug on its postseason Wednesday, so we know two things:
    a) They don't think they're good enough to make the NCAAs this year anyway
    b) They're going on probation and are trying to use this year's tapping out to chop a year or two off the end of the sentence.

    12) This changes the ACC tournament, which becomes a 14-team event, so we lose a game on Tuesday March 10; the ACC's #10 seed gets a bye they wouldn't have gotten had Syracuse been playing in the tournament.

    11) Jim Boeheim is 70 years old and his program is going on probation; could the end be near? He'll be approaching his mid-70's by time Syracuse comes off probation. I wonder what former Syracuse assistant Bernie Fine thinks about all this?

    10) Atlanta Falcons are in hot water for piping in artificial crowd noise when the other team had the ball, to screw up their signals in a domed stadium, where the noise has nowhere to go. It is my duty to inform you that Thomas Dimitroff, GM of the Falcons, worked for the Patriots before he came to work for the Falcons. Dimitroff was in Foxboro during the height of the Spygate years.

    9) Why is it illegal for NFL teams to text the sidelines during games? Is this the case of having too many rules? Cleveland is in trouble for this one.

    8) Phil Jackson was a supporting player for the Knicks, he was a Hall of Fame coach and so far, he is an awful team president. Those three jobs are all different; being really good at one of them doesn't mean you'll be any good at the others.

    7) Handicapping is difficult; Indiana covered by a point Tuesday at Wisconsin, in a game where they made 13 of 24 from the arc, numbers that would normally signal an upset win, but they lost by 14. That tells me that Wisconsin would cover this game way more often than not, but it didn't happen Tuesday. Its a tough game to beat.

    6) Memo to drivers in the Albany area: Putting your turn signal on doesn't give you the right to cut off drivers in other lanes. Its icy out there. Please be careful.

    5) Kent State's Jimmy Hall has mono, is out for a while; he is averaging 15 ppg.

    4) Oregon's star hooper Joseph Young is taking one class this semester, as he wraps up his education in Eugene-- sign language. Must be a quiet class.

    3) Nets trainer Tim Walsh saved a man's life at practice earlier this week; scout had a heart attack and Walsh knew what to do and did it and the guy is going to be OK. It must be a good feeling going to sleep knowing you saved someone's life.

    2) I did my taxes Wednesday; why on God's green earth do they ask you if you want to give $3 to the Presidential election funds? Seriously, I can think of 1,000 things I'd do with my money before I'd give it to a politician.

    1) Cordell Broadus signed with UCLA, so the Snoop Dogg/Les Miles pairing will not happen, but Jim Mora Jr coaches the Bruins, so there is still hope for an ESPN Gameday interview with Snoop and Jim Mora Sr.-- that would be great TV.

Game of the Day: Clippers at Cavaliers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Cleveland Cavaliers (-4.5, 207)

Cleveland continues to push toward team history and looks to maintain its mastery of the Western Conference when it hosts the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday. The Cavaliers' 11-game winning streak is two shy of the franchise record and they own a seven-game run against the West, including a 126-121 win at the Clippers on Jan. 16. Kyrie Irving had 37 points to lead the way for Cleveland, which seeks the season series sweep against a team it has owned at home, winning 11 of the last 12 matchups.

Los Angeles is 2-2 thus far on a season-high eight-game road trip and has likely needed its last two days off to get past a miserable collapse at Brooklyn on Monday. The Clippers led the Nets by nine points with less than two minutes remaining before fading down the stretch and falling on a jumper in the closing seconds to sink to 5-4 on the road against the East. DeAndre Jordan scored 22 points and grabbed 20 rebounds but was the primary culprit in a woeful 8-of-25 showing from the foul line by Los Angeles, going 2-of-12 at the stripe.

                ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (33-16 SU, 20-29 ATS, 21-25-3 O/U):
Los Angeles' wasted chances at the line was a big reason it failed to hang on at Brooklyn, while the loss of J.J. Redick to back spasms did not help. The veteran, who is enjoying his finest shooting season of a nine-year career, lasted just four minutes before succumbing to the pain that has been bothering him for several days and will not return "until he's right," according to head coach Doc Rivers. Jamal Crawford is next on the team in made 3-pointers but has hit only 31.1 percent since the start of December.

                ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (30-20 SU, 22-28 ATS, 16-33-1 O/U):
While LeBron James' scoring average (26.2) is on pace to be his lowest since his rookie campaign, the superstar has been handing out assists at his best rate since the last season of his previous stint with Cleveland in 2009-10 - when he averaged a career-high 8.6 - and his ability to distribute has been vital. James had 11 assists in the 97-84 win over Philadelphia on Monday, his ninth double-digit effort of the season, as the Cavaliers improved to 12-1 in games in which James has at least nine helpers. The effort against the 76ers left James needing 101 assists to catch Mark Price for the all-time franchise lead and 50 to tie former Chicago Bulls great Scottie Pippen for the most in NBA history by a forward.

                TRENDS:

*Clippers are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 vs. NBA Central.
*Cavaliers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a S.U. win.
*Under is 5-1 in Clippers last 6 games following a S.U. loss.
*Under is 4-0 in Cavaliers last 4 home games.

                CONSENSUS:
53.39 percent of users are backing LAC +4.5, with 61.23 percent on the over.

NBA roundup: Warriors' Curry scores 51

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Curry poured in 26 of his season-high 51 points in the third quarter Wednesday night as the Golden State Warriors took their first lead of the game before pulling away late for a 128-114 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

                  Celtics 104, Nuggets 100

BOSTON -- The Celtics capped a day of Boston celebration with a victory over Denver. Hours after the city held its latest duck boat parade, this one for the NFL champion New England Patriots, the Celtics won for the second time in 24 hours, following a wire-to-wire win over the Knicks in New York with another strong effort.

With Patriots owner Robert Kraft and some of his players among a crowd that included all kinds of empty seats, the Celtics shot 9-for-13 from 3-point range in the first half and then survived after blowing a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Forward Jared Sullinger snapped a 100-100 tie with two free throws with 22.8 seconds left. NEW ORLEANS -- Guard Russell Westbrook exploded for a season-high-tying 45 points, including 25 in the first half, and keyed a 13-0 run late in the final 5:21 to lift the Oklahoma City past New Orleans.

The Pelicans led 91-89 with 5:39 left when forward Ryan Anderson canned a 3-pointer from the right baseline. However, in the final five minutes, Westbrook took over. He fed forward Serge Ibaka for a dunk to tie the score and then hit one of two free throws to put Oklahoma City up 92-91. Westbrook dribbled past Eric Gordon for a layup and added to the run with a 16-foot leaner, giving the Thunder a 100-91 lead.

The Pelicans were led by forward Anthony Davis with 23 points and eight rebounds. The Thunder were without All-Star forward Kevin Durant, who missed his second consecutive game with a toe injury.

HOUSTON -- Bolstered by its bench, Houston held Chicago scoreless during the opening four-plus minutes of the fourth quarter en route to the win.

Houston opened the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run. The Rockets' surge bumped the lead to 88-70 -- a deficit too large for Chicago to overcome, even after a late push into single digits.

Butler finished with a game-high 27 points, and three Bulls posted double figures in rebounds: forwards Pau Gasol (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Taj Gibson (12 points, 10 rebounds) and center Joakim Noah (19 rebounds). The Heat had two chances to pull out the win in the final seconds, but guard Mario Chalmers missed on a drive to the net and guard Norris Cole came up short on a 25-foot shot at the final horn.

Minnesota overcame a monster night by Miami center Hassan Whiteside, who had 24 points and 20 rebounds, becoming the first Heat player to reach the 20-20 plateau since Shaquille O'Neal did it in 2004.

                  Grizzlies 100, Jazz 90

Point guard Trey Burke totaled 21 points, four assists and three rebounds off the bench for Utah.

MILWAUKEE -- Guard O.J. Mayo hit a 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds left to force overtime, and point guard Brandon Knight scored 12 of his 24 points in the extra session as Milwaukee extended its winning streak to five games

Knight struggled much of the game before hitting all three of his shots in overtime, including a pair of 3-pointers, while going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

His late surge complemented a career-high 25-point effort from forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who hit 10 of 14 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Bucks guards Kris Middleton and Mayo each added 21 points. Los Angeles forward Carlos Boozer scored six of his team-leading 28 in overtime.

Top 25 roundup: Purdue upsets Ohio State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue got 20 points from guard Rapheal Davis and 14 from guard Jon Octeus and used a key 10-0 run in the second half to upset 20th-ranked Ohio State 60-58 Wednesday night in Mackey Arena.

The Boilermakers posted their third consecutive victory against a ranked opponent for the first time since 1979. Before beating then-No. 25 Iowa on Jan. 24 and then-No. 22 Indiana on Jan. 28, the Boilermakers had lost 13 straight games against ranked opponents. Purdue (15-8, 7-3 Big Ten) won its fourth consecutive game overall.

A free throw by guard Kendall Stephens with 4.9 seconds left accounted for the final score just before Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell (20 points) missed a potential winning 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

Ohio State (17-6, 6-4) played without starting forward Marc Loving, who did not make the trip from Columbus. School officials did not provide details before the game as to why Loving did not travel with the team.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Guard Quinn Cook scored all 17 of his points in the second half, and the fourth-ranked Blue Devils fended off a threat from the Yellow Jackets.

                    No. 7 Villanova 70, Marquette 52

PHILADELPHIA -- The seventh-ranked Wildcats started slowly, endured a poor shooting night, turned the ball over and still were far better than the Golden Eagles.

Villanova (20-2, 7-2 Big East) earned its seventh win in eight games. Marquette (10-12, 2-8) endured its sixth consecutive defeat, the team's longest skid since 1990-91.

Villanova shot just 37.7 percent from the field and turned the ball over 15 times, but five Wildcats scored in double figures. Junior point guard Ryan Arcidiacono paced Villanova with 18 points -- matching a season high -- on 5-of-9 shooting, including 4-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Barely surviving a late run by Bradley, the Shockers moved into a first-place tie with Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley Conference with a win at Peoria Civic Center.

Guard Ron Baker scored 13 points to lead a balanced Wichita State offense. Forward Darius Carter and guard Tekele Cotton contributed 10 each as the Shockers (20-3, 10-1) shot 48 percent from the field despite going the final 12:38 without a field goal.

Maryland guard Melo Trimble sealed the win when he made two free throws with 6.6 seconds left. Trimble didn't make a basket for the second straight game but had a career-high eight assists.

First-place VCU (18-4, 8-1), with a deep bench against taller George Mason, won for the 13th time in 14 games. Rams standout guard Treveon Graham, who did not play Jan. 17 due to high ankle sprain, played just 11 minutes in the first half Wednesday and did not play in the second half as he wore a brace on his ankle.

The Patriots (7-14, 2-7) lost for the seventh time in eight games despite 15 points from forward Jalen Jenkins. Reserve guard Patrick Holloway added 13 points for George Mason after he missed the previous three games with a blood disorder.

The No. 19 Bears thrived as forward Rico Gathers scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, guard Kenny Chery added 13 points and six assists and Baylor defeated TCU at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor (17-5, 5-4 Big 12) used a 13-0 run midway through the second half to distance itself from the Horned Frogs and win for the fifth time in the last seven Big 12 games. TCU (14-8, 1-8) lost its fifth straight conference game, all against teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.

                    Providence 74, No. 24 Georgetown 71

AUSTIN, Texas -- Oklahoma State built a lead, blew the lead, then battled in overtime to beat No. 25 Texas at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Cowboys won it where they nearly lost it -- at the foul line. Guard Phil Forte made two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining in the extra period to seal the win. Texas point guard Isaiah Taylor missed on a desperation, running 3-pointer as time expired.

Oklahoma State finished just 20-for-29 from the line and missed the front end of two one-and-one opportunities late in regulation, aiding a Longhorns rally.

In a game of major implications for both teams, the Cowboys bounced back from a home loss to Oklahoma to improve to 15-7, 5-5 in the Big 12.

Under streaking as Hornets defense heats up

The Charlotte Hornets are becoming one of the top under teams in the NBA, going under in eight of their last nine including four-straight.

Over the past nine, the Hornets are only allowing 88.2 points and a paltry 85 points per game over their past four contests.

Offense slowing for Suns, books yet to adjust

The Phoenix Suns have gone under in their past four contests, thanks in large to a slowing of their offense. Over their past five contests, the Suns are averaging 99.3 points per contest which is almost 7.5 points less than they've averaged on the season as a whole.

Despite the drop in offensive numbers, books have yet to adjust with those games closing with an average total of 215.

Flurry of movement on Wizards-Hornets spread

Oddsmakers opened the Charlotte Hornets as modest 1.5-point home favorites with the Washington Wizards in town Thursday and that has been on the move since.

As of Thursday afternoon, the spread moved to +1, then to Pick, and then to Wizards -1, where it presently sits in Vegas and at most offshores.

The Wizards have been one of the coldest teams against the spread recently, riding an eight game ATS losing streak into Thursday's game.

Jayhawks' new offense giving Over value to Kansas

Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self is straying from the script with this year’s program, and his recent adjustments could provide solid Over value with KU in the final stretch of Big 12 action.

As highlighted by C.J. Moore of Bleacher Report, Kansas is getting away from its post-orientated offense due to poor shooting from field (45.9 percent on 2-point shots – 239th in the country) and attempting more shots from beyond the arc during Big 12 play. The Jayhawks haven’t been able generate points by their usual practice of throwing the ball into the post, instead using more dribble penetration and kicking out to open shooters on the perimeter.

College hoops total bettors have reaped the benefits of those extra 3-point looks, with the Jayhawks averaging 9.2 made 3-pointers on 20.6 attempts (44.7 percent) in the five conference games in which KU has played Over the total. In the four games in which Kansas played Under the number, it averaged only 4.25 3-point buckets on 13.5 attempts (31 percent).

The Jayhawks put this new-look offense to the test in an 89-76 victory over Iowa State Monday, in which it negated the post-up for dribble penetration and knocked down 10 of 21 3-point attempts and played well Over the total.

"We've kind of found a way to win some games different than we practice all the time and what we emphasize, and tonight was one of those nights," Bill Self told reporters after the game.

The high-scoring win over ISU improved KU to 7-2 O/U inside Allen Fieldhouse on the season, including a 3-2 O/U mark in conference competition. The Jayhawks are 40 for 91 (44 percent) from distance in those Big 12 home games – a significant jump from their season average of 39.6 percent. Away from Lawrence, Kansas is 2-2 O/U with a 23-for-66 mark (35 percent) from long range.

The Jayhawks could be a little more trigger happy from outside the arc this coming weekend, when it visits Oklahoma State in Stillwater Saturday. The Cowboys have one of the best home-court defenses in the country, allowing just 56.2 points per home game on 36.5 percent shooting - 31.4 percent from 3-point range.
