How to best bet college basketball's NCAA bubble teams

The word “bubble” is going to start popping in your ear more and more over the next two weeks. For college basketball fans, the bubble means a team is on the cusp of the NCAA tournament – where a big win or bad loss can make the difference come Selection Sunday.

For basketball bettors, however, bubble teams mean value – either betting on or against them. Programs with uncertain futures this March can provide some extra pop for your college hoops wagers, playing with added motivation to get off the bubble. Or they can be fade bait, crumbling under the weight of the bubble until their tournament hopes burst with a season-ending slump.

With only a handful of games left for these schools to paint their postseason picture, we break down the best ways to handicap and wager bubble teams in the home stretch of the conference schedule:

    Size up the sked

There are more than 20 squads currently tagged as “bubble teams” when scouring the mainstream media polls and countless more that could eek their way into one of the 68 NCAA spots available. The first step in finding the value with the bubble is to break down which teams actually have the best shots at impressing the selection committee in the final two weeks.

Major conferences usually offer teams one or two more games versus ranked rivals, the best way for them to boost their NCAA resume. This is automatic hope for these schools, who know that if they take care of those big-name opponents, they have a chance to go dancing.

One team currently on the tourney fence is Texas, which sits 6-8 in Big 12 play. The Longhorns haven’t scored many wins against notable names and are just 1-10 against programs ranked in the Top 50 in RPI. However, the Horns have three of their four remaining Big 12 games against ranked opponents – WVU, Kansas and Baylor – with plenty of opportunities to get off the bubble. That could keep Rick Barnes' kids competitive in each of those games.

On the other hand, a program like Cincinnati has already played its conference heavyweights in the AAC and is left with an unimpressive schedule featuring Central Florida, Tulane, Tulsa, and Memphis. Even if the Bearcats win out in those four games, they may not have enough clout to avoid their bubble bursting – outside of an impressive conference tournament. If Cincinnati drops one of those games, it could lose focus knowing an at-large bid to the Big Dance isn’t in the cards.

    Spot bets

Sizing up spot bets – no matter the sport – is a keen handicapping process. And this approach to wagering holds even more value when it comes to bubble teams down the stretch.

A team needing a notable win to puff up its March Madness chances can often times get caught looking past an unranked opponent on the weekday and ahead to their ranked foe on the weekend. The classic lookahead spot offers value in going against the bubble team in the game before a big season-defining showdown.

This week, Miami can tighten its hold on a spot in the NCAA field with a win at North Carolina Saturday. But before the Hurricanes head to Chapel Hill to face the Tar Heels, they host Florida State in Coral Gables Wednesday night. The Seminoles aren’t earning an at-large bid – and know it – but would love to spoil their ACC rivals' tourney chances.

Bubble teams can also be very susceptible to the letdown spot in their pursuit of a postseason place. Teams coming off a matchup with a ranked opponent – win or lose – run the risk of coming down off that high and playing flat in their next outing. Bubble teams losing to a ranked foe feel like their season is shot and teams coming off a win against a big-name opponent can be a false sense of accomplishment.

Some potential letdown spots this week include Texas A&M, facing ranked Arkansas Tuesday then hosting Auburn Saturday, and North Carolina State at ranked North Carolina Tuesday and then at Boston College Saturday.

    Home/Away

Not that teams need much extra motivation when resting firm on the bubble in the closing games of the schedule, but having a healthy dose of hometown love never hurts.

Unlike in pro basketball, where home and away splits are a slight difference in the stats, college basketball teams can be completely different squads when taking their home court compared to playing in the role of visitor. And, more often than not, teams on the NCAA bubble are the ones who display that disparity in venue.

UCLA has been one of the more two-faced teams in the country when it comes to performance at home and away. The Bruins are just 2-8 SU and 4-6 ATS on the road, averaging just 60.3 points per game away from home. But at home in Pauley Pavilion, UCLA is a contender with a 13-1 SU and 10-4 ATS mark, scoring 80.5 points an outing – more than 20 points more than on the road. The Bruins can thank the Pac-12 schedule makers for lining up three straight home dates to close conference play, hosting Washington, Washington State and Southern Cal.

UCLA’s conference rival Oregon, another Pac-12 bubble team, has the exact opposite of that friendly slate and closes out the season with three straight road games while trying to impress the selection committee. The Ducks, who have only played six true road games (2-4 SU and ATS) on the year, visit Cal, Stanford and Oregon State with the window closing on their March Madness plans.

    Experience

February is when a lot of teams hit the wall. Programs depending on freshmen to carry the team into the postseason could be playing with fire as first-year players aren’t used to the long grind of the college season, coupled with travel and school work.

That’s not to say freshmen won’t step up – that class is now always the most talented crop of players in the country (thanks to the NBA’s one-year rule) and AAU play keeps high school kids busy all year round. However, big-game experience and knowing what it takes to pull out wins against the odds is something that only comes from veteran programs.

Battling the bubble before is also something basketball bettors should consider. Were this year’s bubble teams in the same position in 2014, and how did they respond? A rotten taste from past Selection Sundays can often be motivation to not get left out again.

Purdue boasts one of the youngest teams in the country with a roster rich in freshmen and sophomores. The Boilermakers are among the most notable bubble teams in the mix right now, having won three straight and eight of their last 10 to inject themselves into the bracket conversion. But, with two freshmen in the starting lineup and two more logging steady minutes off the bench, Purdue could be asking a lot of these first-year talents in the final games of the year. The Boilermakers have a tough task with road games at ranked Ohio State and then at Michigan State (another Big Ten bubble team), then home to Illinois (yet another bubble team looking to get in).

As for a team battling the bubble for a second straight year, Boise State returned six seniors and three juniors from a program that burst its bubble with a 1-3 finish to MWC play last March. That tumble was especially heart breaking with the final two losses coming in overtime. The Broncos fought hard in the 2014 conference tournament too (3-0 ATS), eventually falling to Mountain West champ New Mexico by three points in the semifinals. But it was much too late to score any brownie points with the selection committee. Boise State has three of its final four games away from home, but has the experience and motivation not to let that opportunity slip away again.

Here are some notable bubble teams to watch the next two weeks: Pittsburgh, Miami, UCLA, Stanford, Colorado State, Dayton, Georgia, Tulsa, Oregon, Illinois, Purdue, Temple, Texas, Texas A&M, Boise State, NC State, Davidson, LSU, Cincinnati, BYU.

Villanova cashing tickets for backers lately

The Villanova Wildcats are one of the hottest teams in the Nation and one of the hottest teams at the betting window of late, posting eight-straight victories both straight up and against the spread.

Faithful Nova backers can try their luck Tuesday when the No. 6 Cats host the Providence Friars.

Villanva has been a hot bet all season, taking a 19-7 ATS record into Tuesday's clash, but the current streak is their hottest of the season.

Oddsmakers opened the Wildcats as 11.5-point home favorites, but that has been adjusted to the current spread of -10.5.

        • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Derrick Rose is having knee surgery, so he's on the shelf again. Hopefully, when he heals, he won't play in any more useless summer tournaments.

-- Arkansas 81, Texas A&M 75-- Hogs led 33-9 in this game, were up 23 at half.

-- Maryland 59, Wisconsin 53-- Signature win for the Terrapins.

-- NC State 58, North Carolina 46-- Least points UNC has scored in Deandome, and that covers thirty seasons.

-- Missouri 64, Florida 52-- Gators were 9-23 on foul line, PG Hill was 1-8. Oy.

-- Niagara 82, Canisius 71-- Pretty big upset in the MAAC.

          **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

          13) Lebron James has a 10-year old son, Lebron Jr. There is no need for ESPN to show this kid playing youth basketball-- let the kid be a kid.

Wayne Gretzky's son wound up playing pro baseball; neither one of Michael Jordan's sons wound up finishing their college hoop career. Its hard as hell having a dad who you can't possibly be as good as-- no need to put a 10-year old on national TV.

          12) Now that the Red Sox have this Moncada kid, they have a lot more depth in their position players than they do on the mound; are they stockpiling players, hoping to pry Cole Hamels from Philly?

          11) If my job depended on drafting the right QB this spring, I'd have two really big questions about Jameis Winston:
          a) Does he really want to play football, or does he want to try baseball too?
          b) His weight would be a concern to me; thats a red flag about his dedication.

          10) In the entire 2014 season, Marcus Mariota took five snaps under center. Five. The rest were shotgun snaps. Oregon never huddles, so a 1st-round draft pick QB has to learn the basics of running an NFL huddle-- thats a big adjustment, on top of all the other things he has to learn, in addition to adjusting to the speed of the game.

          9) September 4, Friday night of Labor Day weekend: Washington at Boise State, the return of former Boise coach Chris Petersen, who now runs the Huskies' program. No one who has left Boise State has equalled the success they had on the blue turf.

          8) UCLA quietly hired former Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, right after the recruiting period ended. This way, he gets to coach a season before he has to recruit and possibly answer questions about the Penn State debacle that he lived through. Good football coach, he will help Jim Mora Jr's team.

          7) It bears repeating that Snoop Dawg and Jim Mora Sr will both be in the Rose Bowl next fall, cheering on their sons with the Bruins. ESPN has to get an interview with these two football dads, two of the most opposite people in the history of man.

          6) If you care about such things, ACC home favorites of 5+ points are 14-26 against the spread this season, which shows that the league has no dominant team. Conference tournament in couple of weeks is going to be something.

          5) Wyoming gets star forward Larry Nance Jr (mono) back tonight; doubt he is 100%, but they need anything they can get from him. Cowboys are on the bubble but stand a pretty good chance in a wide open Mountain West tourney. League is down this year. New Mexico won last three tourneys; they won't this year.

          4) Guy named Scott Walker might win the Republican nomination for President, but he isn't a college graduate.

Fair question: Should the President of the US be a college graduate?

Last non-graduate candidate to win a major party nomination was Barry Goldwater in 1964; last president who wasn't a college graduate was Harry Truman, and he was a pretty damned good President.

One other question: Walker went to Marquette for a couple of years. Why did he leave? How does a college dropout become such a successful politician?

          3) Alabama has a young man on its golf team: Davis Love IV. Think their golf booster club has some deep pockets? If I remember right, Davis Love III went to North Carolina and introduced Michael Jordan to golf.

          2) By the way, I had never heard this before, but in order for a PGA golfer to get into the Hall of Fame, he either has to have won 15 PGA tournaments or two majors.

          1) Watched a replay of the Florida-Missouri game. Sometimes, you see a team that will just be really happy when the season ends. That team is Florida; they're just awful, losing to a Missouri club that had lost 13 games in a row. Florida's point guard goes 1-8 on the foul line-- what college point guard goes 1-8 on the line?

They've given up on the season and appear anxious for it to be over.

          • See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

            Letdown spot

NBA fans are treated to a potential Finals preview with the Golden State Warriors visiting the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday night. These teams have identical 6-2 records in February, heading into Tuesday, and if the NBA futures are right, Cavs priced at +300 and Warriors priced at +400, they will be battling for the league title this spring.

But after the smoke has cleared and the dust settles Thursday, Golden State must travel overnight to the Great White North to face another of the NBA’s elite. The Toronto Raptors are waiting to sink their claws into the Warriors, who are ripe for a letdown in the Air Canada Centre. Toronto was smashed by 21 points in the Bay Area back in January and would love to return the favor Friday.

            Lookahead spot

The BYU Cougars are long shots to make the NCAA tournament, sitting third in the West Coast Conference behind projected No. 1 seed Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. It’s not completely crazy to think three WCC schools could go to the Big Dance and in order for that to happen, the Cougars must boost their NCAA portfolio with a win over the Bulldogs this weekend.

With BYU setting its sights on the Zags Saturday, the Cougars could look past this week’s opponent Portland. They travel to the Earle A. Chiles Center Thursday night. The Pilots had strung together four straight wins before road losses at St. Mary’s and Pacific (in overtime). Portland showed it has the offensive firepower to keep pace with BYU and could spoil the Cougars’ tournament hopes before they get a shot at Gonzaga.

            Schedule spot

The Ottawa Senators escape the horrid winter weather in Canada’s capital with a West Coast road trip this week, dropping the puck in Anaheim Wednesday night. The Sens went 3-2 during a five-game home stand but now play five in a row on the road, including three games in four nights to end the month. Ottawa is just 10-13-3-2 away from the Canadian Tire Centre this season.

Following Wednesday’s game with the Ducks, the Senators stay in Los Angeles to face the Kings Thursday, then have a day off to travel to San Jose to play the Sharks Saturday. Ottawa is outside of the playoff picture heading into this tough stretch of schedule and a couple quick losses could have the front office packing it in for the season, playing the prospects, and sizing up potential deals before the trade deadline. Keep an eye on the Sens motivation come Saturday in San Jose.

Top 25 roundup: Maryland upsets Wisconsin

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Guard Dez Wells scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds as 14th-ranked Maryland upset fifth-ranked Wisconsin 59-53 Tuesday in a Big Ten showdown between the only ranked teams in the conference.

Maryland guard Melo Trimble, who added 16 points, made a layup and free throw with 33.3 seconds left to give the Terrapins a 57-52 lead, and the Badgers missed several shots on their next possession.

Maryland (23-5, 11-4 Big Ten) is 8-0 at home this season against Big Ten teams. The Badgers (25-3, 13-2) saw their 10-game winning streak end despite 18 points from center Frank Kaminsky before a sellout crowd of 17,950 fans.

The Terps won their previous four home games by a total of 13 points.

                      Villanova 89, Providence 61

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Guard Darrun Hilliard scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, and the sixth-ranked Wildcats clinched at least a share of the Big East regular-season title by routing the 25th-ranked Friars.

Hilliard scored 14 points during a crucial 20-4 run that stretched Villanova's lead to 58-36 after Providence made it a six-point game early in the second half. Hilliard knocked down four 3-pointers during that stretch.

Senior forward JayVaughn Pinkston, who was honored along with Hilliard before the game in Senior Night festivities, tallied 16 points and eight rebounds for Villanova (26-2, 13-1). Providence (19-9, 9-6) was paced by junior forward Tyler Harris' 18 points.

                      Syracuse 65, Notre Dame 60

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Junior guard Trevor Cooney scored seven of his 11 points in the final 5:29 to help the Orange knock off the ninth-ranked Irish in Atlantic Coast Conference action. Syracuse (18-10, 9-6) survived despite having star center Rakeem Christmas foul out with 5:18 left.

Sophomore forward B.J. Johnson, who scored five points in the final 42 seconds, led Syracuse with 19 points.

Freshman forward Bonzie Colson led Notre Dame (24-5, 12-4) with 16 points, and guard Jerian Grant scored 13 points on 2-of-8 shooting, including 0-for-5 from 3-point range.

North Carolina State 58, North Carolina 46

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Guard Ralston Turner scored 14 points, including a key 3-point basket, and the Wolfpack led almost the entire way in defeating the 15th-ranked Tar Heels. North Carolina State (17-11, 8-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) earned its first victory in Chapel Hill since 2003.

Guard Anthony Barber led North Carolina State with 15 points, and guard Trevor Lacey added 14 points as the Wolfpack produced a three-game winning streak for the first time since November.

Forward Justin Jackson's 16 points and forward Kennedy Meeks' 12 points paced North Carolina (19-9, 9-6). The Tar Heels fell for the fifth time in seven games, and the 46 points were their lowest output in the Smith Center.

                      Arkansas 81, Texas A&M 75

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The 18th-ranked Razorbacks saw a 24-point, first-half lead dwindle to two in the final 90 seconds, but they hit five of six free throws in the final minute to off the Aggies.

Arkansas (23-5, 12-3 Southeastern Conference) earned its seventh consecutive win and maintained sole possession of second place in the league behind No. 1 Kentucky. The Razorbacks, who beat the Wildcats twice last season, visit Lexington, Ky., on Saturday.

Junior guard Danuel House scored 15 of his career-high 28 points in the second half and helped sparked the Aggies (19-8, 10-5). The Razorbacks got another big game from sophomore forward Bobby Portis, the SEC's leading scorer, who hit nine of 13 shots and scored 22 points.

                      West Virginia 71, Texas 64

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Forward Devin Williams produced 14 points and seven rebounds as the 20th-ranked Mountaineers snapped a long stretch of futility against Texas by beating the Longhorns.

It didn't matter that point guard Juwan Staten endured an off night for the Mountaineers (22-6, 10-5 Big 12), who had dropped four straight meetings against Texas by double-digit margins. Forward Jonathan Holton and guard Daxter Miles each scored 12 points for West Virginia, which built an 18-point first-half bulge and held on at the finish.

Guard Demarcus Holland scored 14 points and point guard Isaiah Taylor scored 13, but they each committed four turnovers for the Longhorns (17-11, 6-9). Texas fell to 1-8 against the top six teams in the Big 12 standings.

ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI (17-10) at IOWA HAWKEYES (17-10)

Carver-Hawkeye Arena – Iowa City, Iowa
                        Tip-off: Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. ET
                        Sportsbook.ag Line: Iowa -7

NCAA hopefuls Iowa and Illinois clash in a must-win conference game for two teams on the tournament bubble.

Iowa and Illinois meet for the only time this season with Iowa looking to pick up its third win in a row while Illinois has struggled to re-acclimate leading scorer, G Rayvonte Rice (15.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG) in dropping their last two games.

The Hawkeyes have been a team of small streaks, the only thing consistent about them being their inconsistency. Their last two wins, on the surface (Wednesday versus Rutgers, Sunday at Nebraska) may not seem impressive, however, the margins of victory – 34 and 28 points respectively – are eye-openers. The 28-point win at Nebraska Sunday was, by far, Nebraska’s most lopsided defeat at home. Notoriously hard to score on in Lincoln, Iowa went 50-50-84 (FG%, 3PT%, FT%) in embarrassing the Cornhuskers.

That Iowa Hawkeyes team, whenever it shows its face, is trouble for even the upper-crust of the conference. Illinois, seemingly clicking without senior leader, Rice (6-3 SU and a three game win streak before he returned) has had their offense take major steps back in his three games returning (squeaking out a 64-52 overtime win over Michigan, scoring 49 and 53 points, respectively in losses to Wisconsin and Michigan State). Dropping this contest to Iowa would require some major Big Ten tournament exploits for Illinois to make the NCAA’s.

Iowa has one trend going for them in conference play: When they win, they cover; when they lose, they don’t (8-6 SU, 8-6 ATS). They’re mediocre at home in conference (4-3 SU, 4-3 ATS) owning an impressive win versus No. 14 Maryland, but following that up with a disappointing loss versus Minnesota. Illinois has found some consistency in its last five with wins and covers as well (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) and are just as consistent across both categories on the road in conference play (2-5 SU, 2-5 ATS). Historically, Illinois has enjoyed success recently (4-2 SU) when playing at Iowa in the past six games (since Mar. 2008).

The total in this series in Iowa City has also gone Under seven of the last eight times.

There are no new injuries, but Illinois G Aaron Cosby (7.8 PPG) who was suspended indefinitely has now officially left the team.

One of the best examples of how important ever-intangible “team chemistry” is is the age-old example of “team plays great in absence of best player; team falters upon best player’s return”. Unfortunately, Illinois is right in the thick of that quandary at the worst possible time, as they’ve played disjointed and uninspiring basketball upon the return of Rayvonte Rice. While Rice has done his fair share to contribute (9.7 PPG, 29% FG, 31 MPG) in the three games he’s been back for, he’s not alone.

F Malcolm Hill (14.7 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 1.1 APG, 45% FG) had averaged 17 points per game in Rice’s absence. Nobody’s mistaking Hill for Magic Johnson, but he’d passed out 1.3 assists per game in that span.

In three games since Rice’s return, Hill hasn’t dished out one assist. G Kendrick Nunn (11.5 PPG, 1.7 threes/game on 40% 3PT) had flourished to average 16.6 points per game in Rice’s absence, while upping his assists (4.1/game) and nailing 2.6 threes per game at a 43% clip. In the last three games, though, Nunn has dropped back down to 11.7 points per game on 31% from the field, and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1:1. That turnovers are a recent issue is a surprise, because as a team, Illinois usually is very good at protecting the basketball (9.7 TO/game, 13th in NCAA; +3.4 TO margin).

C Nnanna Egwu (6.8 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.8 BPG) as he’s been able to stay on the floor (which is always the biggest asset to Head Coach John Groce) and blocked seven shots in his last three. Egwu will be sorely needed against Iowa, as the Hawkeyes boast one of the taller frontcourts in the nation and are one of the best rebounding teams in the conference.

The formula for victory in conference play has been very simple for Iowa: Win the rebounding battle and win the game (all eight conference wins have been with Iowa winning on the boards). Now, the Hawkeyes are inconsistent enough with the rest of their play to dominate on the boards and lose (see at Purdue, where Iowa shot 32% FG). Leading the charge lately has been senior leader, F Aaron White (14.7 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 51% FG), who’s really been hitting the glass in his last five games (9.6 RPG). White has two of his three double-doubles on the season in his past three games, with his 18-point, 11-rebound performance in the drubbing of Nebraska being arguably his best performance of the season.

White’s wingman, F Jarrod Uthoff (12.2 PPG, 6.0 RPG) has also raised his play in the last four games. A lanky sharpshooter with a high basketball IQ, Uthoff has produced all over the stat sheet lately (16.8 PPG, 2 BPG, 1.5 SPG, 49% FG, 47% 3PT 2.3 threes/game). Uthoff’s threes are very important because Iowa doesn’t really make it’s mark from out there (33% 3PT, 237th in NCAA). Every bit of space that Iowa can get to free up White and their other big men, C Adam Woodbury (7.0 PPG, 5.2 RPG) and F Gabriel Olaseni (8.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.6 BPG – in 18 MPG) is gravy to Iowa’s offense. Given the need for perimeter production, the emergence of G Peter Jok (7.4 PPG, 37% 3PT) might be what’s boosted Iowa’s play the most recently.

Jok has hit double figures in five of the Hawkeye’s past six contests (11.7 PPG) and has poured in 12 threes over that span. Iowa consistently dominates on the boards (37.2 RPG, 2nd Big Ten, +3.9 margin) and all their frontcourt players (at 6’9” or taller) are bigger than Illinois’ biggest player (Egwu) so expect this trend to continue.

BAYLOR BEARS (20-7) at IOWA STATE CYCLONES (20-6)

James H. Hilton Coliseum – Ames, Iowa
                        Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:00 p.m. ET
                        Sportsbook.ag Line: Iowa State -7

No. 19 Baylor heads to Ames for a huge conference battle with No. 12 Iowa State on Wednesday.

No. 19 Baylor hosted Kansas State on Saturday and came away with a 69-42 victory as a 9-point home favorite. The Bears have now won two straight games, but they are just 2-2 SU in their past four games. One major positive to take away from their last two victories is that they held their opponents to just 45.5 PPG in those contests.

No. 12 Iowa State, meanwhile, has now won-and-covered in three straight games and four of their past five after beating the Longhorns 85-77 as 3-point underdogs in Austin on Saturday. The Cyclones were on fire in that game, shooting 46.4% from the field and 57.1% from behind the arc. This Iowa State team has now shot 45% or better from the field in 10 of its past 14 games.

These two conference foes last met on Jan. 14, when Baylor beat Iowa State 74-73 as a 2-point home favorite. The Cyclones have gotten the better of the Bears recently, however, going 6-4 SU and 7-3 ATS in their past 10 meetings. Iowa State has also won-and-covered in its past seven games hosting Baylor. The Bears have not performed too well against Big 12 opponents this year, going just 8-6 SU and 6-8 ATS. They are also just 5-4 SU and 4-5 ATS in away games this season. Iowa State, meanwhile, is 11-0 SU and 6-5 ATS as a home favorite this season. The Cyclones are also 10-4 SU and 8-6 ATS versus conference opponents.

G Dee Durham (Wrist) is out indefinitely for Baylor and Iowa State is not currently dealing with any injuries.

Baylor plays a very balanced style of basketball, consistently getting the job done on both ends of the floor. The Bears are averaging 69.2 PPG (132nd in NCAA) on 43.2% FG (195th in NCAA) and they’re also allowing an impressive 58.8 PPG (19th in NCAA). This team is very good on the glass (40.5 RPG, 5th in NCAA) and also knows how to get into passing lanes (7.5 SPG, 55th in NCAA).

The most important player for this Baylor team on Wednesday will be F Rico Gathers (11.2 PPG, 12.1 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 1.0 BPG). Gathers is an absolute monster on the glass and is also a handful to guard around the basket. He had 13 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a win over Kansas State on Saturday and will need to be active on both ends of the floor against Iowa State. Gathers had 14 points and 15 rebounds in 32 minutes when the Bears beat the Cyclones in their past meeting and will need to do more of the same this time around.

F Royce O’Neale (9.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.1 SPG) was on fire in that game, finishing with 15 points (6-for-8 FG, 3-for-5 3PT) and six rebounds in 36 minutes. The forward is a monster on the glass and is also one of this team’s best outside shooters (44% 3PT). His versatility is a huge asset and he should be in for a big game on Wednesday.

G Kenny Cherry (11.3 PPG, 3.9 APG, 2.9 RPG, 1.5 SPG) has really struggled the past two games, scoring just 11 points total over 64 minutes of action. Cherry had 13 points (4-for-16 FG) and four assists the last time he met Baylor, but he shot the ball horribly and this team needs him to be more efficient.

F Taurean Prince (13.1 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 1.0 BPG) came off the bench the last time he faced Iowa State. He had just five points in that game and will most certainly be more effective this time around. He is averaging 17.0 PPG over the past five contests and is this team’s most consistent scorer.

Iowa State runs one of the best offenses in the nation, putting up 79.8 PPG (9th in NCAA) on 48.6% FG (12th in NCAA). This team moves the ball extremely well (16.9 APG, 7th in NCAA) and also crashes the boards (36.5 RPG, 76th in NCAA). Defensively the team struggles though, allowing 69.0 PPG (251st in NCAA) thanks to some rather poor rim protection (3.9 BPG, 119th in NCAA).

F Georges Niang (14.6 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.4 APG) is the Cyclones’ most versatile player and he will need to play well against Baylor in this one. Niang does a little bit of everything for this group, hitting the glass and unselfishly finding his teammates when his shot is off. He is one of the best shooters they have (41% 3PT) and can’t afford to struggle like he did the last time he met the Bears. Niang had just 10 points (4-for-13 FG) and five rebounds in the loss in Waco and his team needs him to put it all together on Wednesday.

G Monte Morris (10.9 PPG, 5.4 APG, 3.6 RPG, 1.7 SPG) is the reason this team passes so well. Morris is an extremely unselfish guard that puts his teammates in the best positions to score. He is also a capable scorer and he’ll need to be aggressive when things get stagnant on Wednesday. Morris had 11 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes of action when the Cyclones lost to Baylor last game. He’ll need to bring that same energy this time around.

One guy who really got hot in the loss to the Bears in January was G Naz Long (11.2 PPG). Long played one of his best games of the season in that one, pouring in 19 points (7-for-8 FG, 5-for-5 3PT) in what was a nearly perfect shooting night. He can’t be expected to be that hot once again, but he will need to provide some offense if Iowa State is going to keep their home winning streak alive against Baylor.

G Bryce Dejean-Jones (12.4 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.2 SPG) will also need to play a good game for this team to win. Dejean-Jones was excellent against Texas Saturday, finishing with 16 points and four rebounds in 27 minutes of action. He had 14 points, four assists and four rebounds in 33 minutes against Baylor in Waco and that type of all-around play will come a long way in helping his team earn a big home victory.

                          February 24, 2015

                          **Baylor at Iowa State**

-- Iowa State (20-6 straight up, 13-10 against the spread) is in the hunt for the Big 12 regular-season title after Kansas fell at Kansas St. on Monday night. The Cyclones are just one-half game back of the Jayhawks, and they can pull even with a win over Baylor in this spot.

-- Fred Hoiberg's team will be in revenge mode after dropping a 74-73 decision at Baylor on Jan. 14. To its credit, Iowa St. did hook up its gambling supporters as a two-point underdog. Naz Long had a team-best 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 buckets from 3-point range. Georges Niang was held to 10 points, however, on 4-of-13 shooting for the Cyclones. The winners were led by Royce O'Neale's 15 points, while Rico Gathers finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Baylor's Kenny Chery scored the game-winning basket with 4.7 seconds remaining. The 147 combined points went 'over' the 137.5-point total.

-- Iowa St. has won three in a row and four of its last five both SU and ATS, including Saturday's 85-77 win at Texas as a three-point underdog. Niang needed just eight attempts from the field to share team-high scoring honors with Matt Thomas, who drained 4-of-6 shots from downtown. Both players finished with 17 points apiece, while Bryce Dejean-Jones added 16 points.

-- Baylor (20-7 SU, 11-9-1 ATS) had failed to cover the spread in three consecutive games until dealing out woodshed treatment to Kansas St. on Saturday in Waco. The Bears crushed the Wildcats by a 69-42 count as 8.5-point home 'chalk.' Taurean Prince led five players in double figures with 14 points, five assists and five steals, while Gathers produced 13 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

-- Prince averages team-highs in scoring (13.1 points per game), field-goal percentage (46.8%) and steals (1.3 SPG). Gathers is averaging 11.2 points and 12.0 rebounds per contest.

-- Scott Drew's team has been a road underdog seven times, going 3-3-1 ATS with outright victories at South Carolina, at TCU and at West Va. Baylor also has a road win at Vanderbilt as a two-point favorite.

-- Iowa St. is undefeated in 14 home games with a 6-5 spread record.

-- Baylor has lost outright in nine consecutive trips to Ames.

-- The 'over' is 12-9 overall for the Cyclones, 5-5 in their home games. The 'over' has cashed at a 9-3 clip in Iowa St.'s last 12 games.

-- Totals have been an overall wash for Baylor (10-10-1), but the 'over' is 5-3-1 in its road assignments.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

                          **Georgia at Ole Miss**

-- Ole Miss (19-8 SU, 15-10-1 ATS) is playing its next-to-last game at 'The Tad Pad' in Oxford where the Rebels will play in a new arena next season. The Rebels have five home losses this year and have limped to a 4-9-1 ATS record at home. They have lost at home to three teams outside of the RPI Top 100, including Western Ky., Charleston Southern and TCU.

-- Ole Miss won a 59-57 decision Saturday over Tennessee, but it failed to cover the spread as a 7.5-point home 'chalk.' Stefan Moody led the way with 22 points, six steals and four rebounds. Jarvis Summers added 13 points and dished out six assists. The win helped the Rebels to improve to 10-4 in SEC play. They are battling with Arkansas and Texas A&M (who meet each other Tuesday night in Fayetteville) for the second or third overall seed in the SEC Tournament. The Razorbacks went into Tuesday 11-3 in the league, while the Aggies and Rebels shared 10-4 marks.

-- Moody, a transfer guard from Florida Atlantic, is averaging a team-high 16.4 points and 1.7 steals per game. Sebastian Saiz is the Rebs' best post player, averaging team-bests in rebounding (5.1 RPG), field-goal percentage (59.7%) and blocked shots (0.9 BPG). Summers averages 12.7 points and 4.7 assists per game.

-- Georgia (17-9 SU, 14-9-2 ATS) avoided a three-game losing streak by going to Tuscaloosa on Saturday night and capturing a 66-65 overtime win over Alabama as a three-point underdog. Yante Maten rejected one of his three shots for the game in the final seconds to preserve the win for the Bulldogs, who got 14 points and seven rebounds out of Nemanja Djurisic. Charles Mann was also in double figures with 13 points, while Cameron Forte had eight points and 10 rebounds, including the go-ahead bucket with 6.7 seconds remaining. The 'over' hit thanks to the extra session as the combined score in regulation hit right on the 122-point total (61-61).

-- After missing one game with a concussion and a fractured orbital bone, UGA guard J.J. Frazier (10.3 points per game) returned against Alabama to produce eight points, two rebounds and three assists without a turnover. Frazier made all five of his attempts from the free-throw line.

-- Andy Kennedy's squad has won eight of its last nine games with the lone defeat coming at home to Arkansas in a 71-70 loss. As single-digit home favorites this season, the Rebels own an abysmal 2-6 spread record.

-- Georgia is No. 34 in the RPI Rankings, going 2-3 against the Top 50 and 6-5 versus the Top 100.

-- Ole Miss is No. 33 in the RPI. The Rebels have a 4-4 record against Top-100 opponents and a 7-5 mark versus Top-50 foes.

-- Georgia is led by senior center Marcus Thornton, who averages team-bests in scoring (12.2 PPG), rebounding (6.9 RPG) and field-goal percentage (49.3%). When Thornton missed back-to-back games with a concussion earlier this month, UGA lost twice at South Carolina and at Kentucky.

-- The 'over' is 12-11-2 overall for UGA, but the 'under' is 5-3 in its last eight games. The 'over' is 5-3 in the Bulldogs' eight road assignments.

-- The 'over' is 12-10-1 overall for the Rebels, but they have seen the 'under' cash in four straight and six of their last seven. The 'over' is 7-6 in Ole Miss's home games.

-- The SEC Network will have the broadcast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

                          **B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Wyoming star Larry Nance Jr. will make his return to the lineup Wednesday night vs. Fresno State. Nance, who averages team-highs in scoring (16.3 PPG), rebounding (7.2 RPG) and blocked shots (1.2 BPG), has been out for four consecutive games due to mono. The Cowboys went 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS without Nance. They are 21-6 overall and 10-4 in the Mtn. West. The 'over' is 11-4-1 overall for Larry Shyatt's 'team, 6-1 in its home games.

-- If you missed it earlier this week, Louisville dismissed senior starting point guard Chris Jones from the team on Sunday. He had been reinstated to the squad after a one-game suspension and helped the Cards to a comeback home win over Miami on Saturday by scoring 17 points.

-- Florida forward Dorian Finney-Smith will most likely return this weekend vs. Tennessee after missing his third straight game due to suspension Tuesday night at Missouri. The Gators are hoping to also get back leading scorer Michael Frazier II, who missed his fifth straight game against the Tigers.

-- Colorado St.'s J.J. Avila (16.1 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 3.0 APG) is 'questionable' Wednesday against San Jose St. due to a back injury that forced him to leave Saturday's spread-covering win over Air Force in the second half.

-- Court storming has to stop. I'm proud to say that we don't court storm at my alma mater (Florida) and we don't rush the field in football (ever). The only time I can remember Gators rushing the field was at Doak Campbell Stadium in the 1980s (multiple times). I guess somebody has to get hurt badly before the NCAA or the respective universities bring a stop to this nonsense. Seriously, student, go have your party at the bars to celebrate. They aren't serving cold drinks on the court.

                            February 25, 2015

Mavericks at Hawks – 7:35 PM EST

Dallas wrapped up a three-game homestand a perfect 3-0 after rallying past Toronto last night, 99-92 to cash as 4 ½-point favorites. The Mavericks shot 48% from the floor, while cashing the ‘under’ for the fifth consecutive game. Since sweeping a three-game road trip in early January, Rick Carlisle’s team has split its last 12 games away from the American Airlines Center, but has put together a 1-5 SU/ATS record in its previous six contests in the role of a road underdog.

The Hawks still own the best record in the Eastern Conference at 44-12, but Atlanta has compiled a 4-4 record since a 19-game winning streak. Mike Budenholtzer’s club bounced back from an ugly home loss to Toronto last Friday, as the Hawks took care of the Bucks, 97-86 on Sunday as five-point favorites. Atlanta held off Dallas in the first meeting back in December, 105-102 as four-point road underdogs, as the Hawks led by as many as 24 points. Atlanta has taken care of its business at Philips Arena since a 30-point loss to Milwaukee after Christmas, putting together a 12-1 SU and 9-4 ATS record in the last 13 home games.

Wizards at Wolves – 8:05 PM EST

The early-season magic for the Wizards is fading away by the day as Washington dropped its fourth straight game on Tuesday, 114-107 to Golden State. The Wizards busted the 100-point mark for the first time in five tries last night, but are 0-3 SU/ATS since the All-Star break, while losing nine of the past 11 contests. The struggles on the road are even more startling from an ATS perspective, failing to cover in seven of the last eight games away from the Verizon Center, as shooting guard Bradley Beal remains sidelined with a toe injury.

Kevin Garnett makes his second career debut with the Timberwolves, this coming less than one week after getting traded by the Nets to the team he spent the first 12 seasons of his career. Garnett heads to a team that has won just 12 times this season, but has covered in eight of their last 13 games. Minnesota is starting to resemble a healthy roster with Ricky Rubio, Kevin Martin, and Nikola Pekovic all back in the lineup for the duration of the month, as the Wolves have knocked off the Suns, Grizzlies, and Heat at the Target Center in February. However, Minnesota has compiled a 3-5 ATS record as a favorite this season, although one of the covers came against Phoenix in the first game following the All-Star break.

Clippers at Rockets – 8:05 PM EST

Los Angeles had its four-game winning streak snapped in Monday’s 90-87 home defeat to Memphis, but the Clippers are finding their way with All-Star forward Blake Griffin. Since the former top pick was ruled out with an elbow injury on their Grammys road trip, the Clippers have defeated all three Texas teams, including a 110-95 triumph over the Rockets as three-point favorites on February 11. Los Angeles has won six straight meetings with Houston and nine of the past 10 matchups since March 2012, which includes three consecutive double-digit victories at the Toyota Center.

The Rockets continue a five-game homestand following wins over the Raptors and Wolves, as Houston has won and covered six of its past seven contests at the Toyota Center. Kevin McHale’s squad has allowed over 100 points in six of the last seven games overall, but the ‘over’ has cashed only four times due to several high totals (210 or higher in past five games). Ten of Houston’s losses this season have come to the elite teams in the West (Warriors, Clippers, Grizzlies, Spurs, Mavericks, and Blazers), while putting together an 8-10 record against the teams currently sitting in the top eight of the Western Conference.

Spurs at Blazers – 10:35 PM EST

Both these teams are headed to the playoffs, but each squad has combined to go 0-5 since the All-Star break. The Spurs continue their Rodeo Trip as they are coming off losses to the Clippers, Warriors, and Jazz, while being held to 81 points in Monday’s 90-81 setback at Utah as 5 ½-point favorites. Gregg Popovich’s team has struggled to cover numbers recently, posting a pitiful 2-9 ATS record in the last 11 games, while losing five straight games in the role of a road underdog.

The Blazers haven’t been much better of late, putting up a pair of rough offensive performances in losses to the Jazz and Grizzlies. LaMarcus Aldridge rested his injured thumb on Sunday night as Portland built a 13-point lead heading into the fourth quarter against Memphis, but the Grizzlies outscored the Blazers, 34-15 in the final 12 minutes for a 98-92 triumph. Portland shot 40% from the floor and misfired on 20 three-point attempts, as the Blazers cashed the ‘under’ for the third straight game. The Blazers have captured two of the first three matchups with the Spurs this season, but San Antonio drilled Portland in the past meeting in January, 110-96.

                            • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Duke 91, Virginia Tech 86 OT-- Refs pulled Dukies thru in this one, even though game was in Blacksburg.

-- Davidson 60, Rhode Island 59-- A-14 tourney is going to be tremendous.

-- Richmond 67, VCU 63, 2OT-- Rams led late in OT after being down 16 in second half, but gave up tying layup and lost in second OT.

-- Northwestern 72, Indiana 65-- Bad loss for Tom Crean.

-- Baylor 79, Iowa State 70-- Scott Drew doesn't enough credit for what he does.

-- Missouri State 80, Bradley 77, 3OT-- Two lousy teams played a great game.

                              **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Looking thru some college hoop stuff......

                              13) Big West-- Cal-Davis has a two-game lead over Irvine. Long Beach lost its last four games, is in middle of the pack. Riverside is a much-improved team.

                              12) Mountain West-- Down year in this league; San Diego State is far and away the best team, but they struggle to score. Not sure Boise or Colorado State will get into the NCAAs if they don't win the conference tournament.

                              11) MAC-- Central Michigan is 11-4, three other teams are 10-5. This conference tournament is always chaotic in Cleveland; this year will be no different.

                              10) MVC-- Wichita and Northern Iowa, Northern Iowa and Wichita. Anyone else winning conference tourney would be huge upset. Teams play Saturday in Wichita.

                              9) AAC-- SMU and Tulsa are tied at top, but Cincinnati's defense is a good as aoyone. UConn is damn good #6 seed, but league drops way off after that.

                              8) Atlantic 14-- Four teams are 11-4; two others are 9-6. VCU, Davidson look good for NCAAs; everyone else needs to win conference tourney.

Needs to be pointed out here how many conferences have wide-open races; other than Kentucky, Wisconsin and maybe Gonzaga, every team in the country has glaring flaws-- aren't many deep teams.

                              7) WCC-- Gonzaga is to this league what UNLV was to the Big West 25 years ago, in Tark the Shark's heydey. Bulldogs have a 4-game lead, but has this league prepared the Zags for the rigors of March Madness?

                              6) Pac-12-- Arizona is best team, but if Stanley Johnson has a rough night, who picks up the slack? Could be a two-bid league, with Wildcats and Utah.

                              5) SEC-- Three teams behind Kentucky all lost their last game, two of them at home. Florida has had a dismal season. Luckily spring football practice starts soon.

                              4) Big 14-- Purdue has been a pleasant surprise, so has Maryland, but Purdue also lost to Gardner-Webb and North Florida. Four teams are locks; Indiana/Illinois are bubblicious-- Purdue and Iowa are close to being in.

                              3) ACC-- Five teams are locks, but North Carolina is playing lousy and Duke damn near got beat at Virginia Tech last night. Virginia needs to get healthy, Louisville has no point guard and Notre Dame is soft on defense.

                              2) Big East-- Not sure what to make of this league. Villanova has a 3-game lead, but this is a league where everyone else has at least eight losses. Butler is a pleasant surprise. DePaul has improved, but they're still in sixth place.

                              1) Big X-- League is just too hard; Home teams are 50-26, 4th-best home win %age in country. Texas is in 8th place but is #21 nationally in KenPom rankings.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
