Top 25 roundup: Kentucky remains perfect

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- No. 1-ranked Kentucky, the lone unbeaten team in America, pushed its spotless record to 22-0 with a 69-58 victory over Georgia Tuesday at Rupp Arena.

But it didn't come easy, especially considering the Bulldogs (14-7, 5-4 SEC) were without three players, two reserves and leading scorer and rebounder Marcus Thornton. It was Georgia's second straight game without Thornton, who suffered a concussion last week. For its part, Kentucky was missing two power forwards, freshman Trey Lyles, who is sick, and junior Alex Poythress, who is out for the year with a torn ACL.

Despite leading by as many as 17 points in the first half, Kentucky was never able to put Georgia away. The Bulldogs trimmed the lead to as few as six points at 60-54 with four minutes remaining. With 1:57 left, UK led by five, 63-58, before scoring the final six points.

Of the players still standing it was Kentucky sophomore guard Andrew Harrison who kept the Wildcats afloat and helped secure a 9-0 record in SEC play. Harrison scored a season-best 23 points. In one of his best efforts of the season, the oft-maligned point guard made 8-of-16 shots to go with seven assists.

    No. 5 Wisconsin 92, Indiana 78

MADISON, Wis. -- Frank Kaminsky scored 23 points and Nigel Hayes added 16 to help No. 5 Wisconsin record a rout of Indiana at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers set a season high for points scored in a game and got double-digit scoring from five players. Along with Kaminsky, Wisconsin's All-American center, and Hayes, a bruising forward, the Badgers got 15 from point guard Bronson Koenig, 14 from forward Sam Dekker and 11 from shooting guard Josh Gasser.

Wisconsin led by 30 with 10 minutes to play. The Hoosiers cut the lead in half over the next five minutes but Wisconsin made it a 82-68 game with 4:55 to play on a 3-pointer by forward Colin Hartman.

    No. 9 Louisville 63, Miami 55

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Guard Terry Rozier had 22 points and forward Montrezl Harrell added 18 points and nine rebounds as No. 9 Louisville defeated Miami at the BankUnited Center.

Rozier and Harrell, both projected to go in the middle of the first round in this year's NBA draft, helped the Cardinals (19-3, 7-2 ACC) win their fourth game in a row. Louisville is 7-1 away from home this season.

Harrell did his damage despite taking two hard hits -- one in each half. On both occasions, he stayed on the ground for over a minute but quickly returned to action.

The Hurricanes (14-8, 4-5 ACC) lost their third straight game.

No. 14 Northern Iowa 61, Indiana State 51

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Coming off its biggest-regular season win in years, a 16-point decision Saturday that ended Wichita State's 30-game winning streak against Missouri Valley Conference teams, No. 14 Northern Iowa had little trouble avoiding a letdown.

With versatile senior forward Seth Tuttle stuffing the stat sheet once again and the defense frustrating Indiana State at every turn, Northern Iowa jumped into sole possession of first place in the MVC with a routine win at Hulman Center.

In winning their 10th straight game, the Panthers (21-2, 10-1) led by double figures for the entire second half, owning as much as an 18-point advantage at one point.

    No. 21 Oklahoma 71, No. 15 West Virginia 52

NORMAN, Okla. -- The 21st-ranked Oklahoma Sooners dominated 15th-ranked West Virginia on both ends of the floor, winning at home.

Junior guard Buddy Hield led Oklahoma with 21 points. Sophomore guard Jordan Woodard added 12 and junior guard Isaiah Cousins and junior forward Ryan Spangler had 10 each.

Spangler, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week after strong performances against Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, continued to be strong on the inside on both ends.

In the team's first meeting, West Virginia scored 27 points off turnovers in an 86-65 Mountaineers win Jan. 13.

    No. 22 Butler 85, St. John's 62

INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler began the game on an 8-0 run, and the No. 22 Bulldogs began the second half with a 14-2 burst, laying the foundation for a Big East victory over St. John's in Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Bulldogs guard Kellen Dunham scored 13 of his 21 points during the second half's first 6:44, including a five-point play when he was fouled in the act of shooting a 3-pointer and a technical foul was called on St. John's forward Sir'Dominic Pointer. Dunham made five consecutive free throws, giving Butler a 50-30 lead.

In its second Big East season, Butler (17-6, 7-3) earned a fourth consecutive conference win for the first time. That stretch includes a two-game season sweep of the Red Storm, who did not arrive in Indianapolis until 5 a.m. Tuesday because of weather conditions in New York City.

        Georgia Tech at Duke

        February 4, 2015

Despite trailing for much of the second half and by as many as 11 points at one point, Duke snapped Virginia's 21-game home winning streak thanks to a hot run of 3-pointers by Quinn Cook and Tyus Jones at winning time. When the buzzer sounded Saturday night in Charlottesville, the Blue Devils walked away with a 69-63 win over UVA as 5.5-point underdogs.

Mike Krzyzewski's team hooked up money-line supporters with a payout in the +200 range (risk $100 to win $290). Jones scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, including the game-clinching 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds remaining. Jones also had four rebounds and four assists compared to only one turnover.

Duke scored the last 11 points of the game to slip past UVA. Cook finished with 15 points thanks to 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. Justice Winslow produced a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Duke (18-3 straight up, 11-9-1 against the spread) returns to the court Wednesday night to face Georgia Tech at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Westgate SuperBook opened the Blue Devils as 16.5-point home favorites against the Yellow Jackets.

Duke is in sixth place in the ACC with a 5-3 record against conference foes. Coach K's squad trails the Cavs, who are 8-1 in league play, by 2.5 games.

Georgia Tech (10-11 SU, 9-8-2 ATS) lost its first seven ACC games and brings an abysmal 1-8 ACC record to Durham. But gamblers shouldn't think of this team as horrible by any stretch.

With the exception of a 57-28 loss at Virginia, the Yellow Jackets have been in every other league conteState They lost in overtime at Notre Dame, by one to Syracuse at home, by three to Notre Dame at home and by two to Boston College at home.

Brian Gregory's team broke out of its ACC slide in a big way last week in Coral Gables, blasting Miami by a 70-50 count as a 9.5-point road underdog. Marcus Georges-Hunt buried 10-of-12 shots from the field and torched the Hurricanes for 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Chris Bolden added 13 points and DeMarco Cox produced 10 points and seven boards.

Coming off the win at UM, Georgia Tech returned home Saturday to take on North Carolina State. The Wolfpack led by nine at intermission and by 14 at one point. Nevertheless, Georgia Tech forced overtime and had a two-point lead in the final seconds.

But when Trevor Lacey knocked down a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, the Jackets had to swallow the most painful of many gut-wrenching defeats in the last five weeks. Lacey's winning trey lifted N.C. State to an 81-80 win as a one-point road 'chalk.'

In the losing effort, Georges-Hunt had 22 of his 23 points after halftime. Charles Mitchell scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Cox finished with 12 points and 10 boards.

Gregory's team has been an underdog 11 times, going 7-3-1 ATS. The Jackets own a 1-1 spread record in a pair of games as double-digit 'dogs.

Duke has been favored by double-digit margins in 14 games, limping to a 6-7-1 spread record. The Blue Devils are 6-9-1 versus the number in their last 15 outings (regardless of the venue).

Georges-Hunt is averaging a team-high 14.0 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per contest. He is averaging 22.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists in Georgia Tech's last three outings.

Duke is led by freshman center Jahlil Okafor, who is third in the ACC in scoring (18.3 PPG) and rebounding (9.4 RPG). Okafor leads the ACC in field-goal percentage (66.4%).

Duke has won seven in a row in this rivalry and has taken the cash in three consecutive meetings. The Blue Devils led by only a point at halftime of last year's showdown at Cameron, but they pulled away in the final 20 minutes en route to a 79-57 win as 15.5-point home favorites. Cook had 12 points for the winners, while Georges-Hunt had 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting in defeat.

The 'over' is 10-6-2 overall for Georgia Tech, 5-2 in its road assignments.

The 'over' is 12-7-1 overall for Duke, 7-1 in its eight home games that had a total.

        Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

        **B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Penn State owns a perfect 6-0 spread record as an underdog this season. The Nittany Lions have covered in four straight going into tonight's game at Maryland. The slumping Terrapins were 8.5-point home favorites as of early this morning.

-- Syracuse avoided a loss its resume couldn't afford at home last night. Trailing by 13 to Virginia Tech with less than six minutes remaining, the 'Cuse finished the game on a 22-7 run. The Orange clipped the Hokies 72-70 when Michael Gbinije hit the game-winning bucket with 0.1 seconds left. Gbinije had tied the game with a pair of free throws at the 18-second mark. Trevor Cooney and Gbinije had 18 points apiece for the Orange, who had won by 20 in Blacksburg a few weeks ago.

-- With Kentucky at The O-Dome on deck Saturday, Florida fell victim to a look-ahead situation Tuesday night in Music City. Behind the hot shooting of freshman guard Riley LaChance, Vanderbilt captured a 67-61 win over the Gators as a 2.5-point home underdog. LaChance scored 15 points and Damian Jones finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. The Commodores outrebounded UF by a 36-25 margin.

-- Boise State has won six in a row after going into Logan and collecting a 68-63 win at Utah State last night. BSU star Derrick Marks played just 26 minutes due to first-half foul trouble, but he was able to score 17 of his 23 points in the second half. James Webb III, who has given this team a monster lift in Mountain West Conference play, had 18 points and eight rebounds. The Broncos have worked their way into the bubble picture going into Sunday's home game vs. San Diego State

-- I repeat: Butler is for real. The Bulldogs picked up another quality win by trouncing St. John's 85-62 at Hinkle Fieldhouse last night.

-- DePaul is 6-5 in Big East play after beating Seton Hall 75-62 as a short home underdog last night. Oliver Purnell deserves a lot of credit for the job he's done this year.

-- Mississippi State played spoiler again last night, winning 71-66 at Tennessee as a nine-point road underdog. The Bulldogs knocked off LSU at The Hump on Saturday in what was probably the biggest win of Rick Ray's disappointing three-year tenure. To be clear, none of us know if Ray is or is going to be a good coach. With the injuries and other misfortune his team has gone through since he arrived, there's no way to judge his work fairly. But if the last two games are any indicator, Ray finally has Mississippi State headed in the right direction. Most important, he has helped MSU backers cash tickets at a 6-1 ATS clip in their last seven games. After playing Saturday at Arkansas, the Bulldogs play four of their next five games in Starkville.

-- Wyoming takes on Colorado State at home tonight. The Rams will be looking to avenge a 60-54 home loss to the Cowboys in Ft. Collins on Jan. 7. Larry Shyatt's team is 18-4 but has just one win over an RPI Top-50 foe (CSU, which is 30th in the RPI), so a victory in this spot is pivotal. Other than next Wednesday's game at San Diego State (2/11), Wyoming doesn't have any more regular-season opponents who are currently in the RPI Top 100.

          Wednesday's Top Action

          February 4, 2015

GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS (10-11) at DUKE BLUE DEVILS (18-3)

Cameron Indoor Stadium - Durham, NC
          Tip-off: Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. ET
          Sportsbook.ag Line Duke -16.5

No. 4 Duke looks to improve its mediocre ACC record with a win in Durham over Georgia Tech on Wednesday.

January wasn’t kind to the Yellow Jackets as the team went 1-9 SU thanks to a miserable start in conference play. Georgia Tech was, however, 5-3-1 ATS in those games. The team’s problem is that it is lousy offensively, shooting under 40% from the field in four of its past five contests. No. 4 Duke, meanwhile, has now won-and-covered in four of its past five games after a 69-63 victory as six-point road underdogs against No. 3 Virginia. Duke trailed for a majority of that game, but a 16-5 run propelled the team to its huge conference victory.

While the Yellow Jackets struggle offensively, the Blue Devils are one of the best teams in the nation on that side of the ball. They’ve shot over 45% from the field in each of their past five games and it’s likely they’ll do so again against an under matched Georgia Tech team. Duke has won-and-covered in three straight games against Georgia Tech, and the team hasn’t lost to the Yellow Jackets SU since Jan. 9, 2010. The last time Duke lost to Georgia Tech at Cameron Indoor Stadium was Mar. 3, 2004. The Blue Devils have won-and-covered in each of their past five games against the Yellow Jackets in Durham. Duke is 10-1 SU and 7-4 ATS when coming off of an ATS win this season. It is, however, just 3-6 ATS this season when playing on three or more days rest. The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, are 7-3-1 ATS as an underdog this season. Both teams are healthy for this game, so injuries likely won’t affect the outcome of this game.

The Yellow Jackets are really struggling recently and their offense has been one of the biggest reasons for that. Georgia Tech is averaging just 64.6 PPG (250th in NCAA) on 41.3% shooting (274th in NCAA) and it will need to score the ball on Wednesday or Duke will run the team out of the gym shortly after the opening tip. Defensively the team is solid, allowing just 63.8 PPG (109th in NCAA), but this Blue Devils offense is a whole different animal. The success of Georgia Tech in this game will be heavily reliant on the play of F Marcus Georges-Hunt (14.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG). Georges-Hunt is excellent around the basket and thrives in his ability to take the ball to the rim. He’s now scored 20+ points in each of his past three games and is rebounding well also, averaging 7.3 RPG in those contests as well. He’ll need to continue to attack the basket and not settle for outside jumpers, as he is not nearly as good of a shooter as he likes to think he is (21% 3PT).

F Charles Mitchell (10.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG) is this team’s second-most reliable scorer and the Maryland transfer will need to be on his game against Duke on Wednesday. Mitchell had 18 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes against NC State on Saturday, which was his first double-digit scoring performance in three games. He can get very complacent at times and the team will need him to be aggressive or it has no chance of pulling off this upset against Duke. C Demarco Cox (8.9 PPG, 6.2 RPG) has played well in the past two games, averaging 11.0 PPG and 8.5 RPG in those contests. The undersized center must be disciplined defensively, as a matchup with Duke C Jahlil Okafor (18.3 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 1.5 BPG) will be by far his toughest of the season. G Travis Jorgenson (3.7 PPG, 3.1 APG) has seen a huge increase in minutes recently, averaging 27.5 MPG over the past two games. Jorgenson will see a lot of time matched up against Blue Devils G Tyus Jones (11.2 PPG, 4.9 APG) and he must keep him off of the free throw line, as Jones will not miss from there very often (89% FT).

Duke seemed completely out of it in its matchup with Virginia on Saturday, but the team rallied back behind some sharp outside shooting late in the game. The Blue Devils are an offensive juggernaut this season, scoring 80.6 PPG (11th in NCAA) on 49.7% shooting (7th in NCAA). They move the ball extremely well, as evidenced by their 15.3 APG (33rd in NCAA), and have a good balance between guard and post play. C Jahlil Okafor is the guy this offense runs through. Okafor has the best combination of size and skill that the NCAA has seen since Anthony Davis was playing at Kentucky. He had 10 points (5-for-7 FG) and nine rebounds in 35 minutes against Virginia and 22 points and 17 rebounds in the game before against Notre Dame. He should really dominate this Georgia Tech team, as it does not have anybody his size in the starting lineup.

The guy that really brought Duke back against Virginia was G Quinn Cook (14.4 PPG, 2.7 APG, 1.2 SPG). Cook had 15 points in the game and was deadly from the outside (3-for-4 3PT), which he has been all season (40% 3PT). Cook is the perfect type of player to play off of Okafor, as he thrives when shooting out of Okafor’s double teams. Tyus Jones has been magnificent running the show for this team in his first year in Durham. He had 17 points, four rebounds and four assists against Virginia, including the dagger he hit from three to put the Blue Devils up six points with just over 10 seconds remaining. The Yellow Jackets are very weak at the point guard position and Jones should be able to give Duke a huge boost with his play there.

WASHINGTON HUSKIES (14-7) at OREGON DUCKS (15-7)

Matthew Knight Arena - Eugene, OR
          Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:00 p.m. ET
          Sportsbook.ag Line Oregon -5

Pacific Northwest rivals clash when short-handed Washington invades Eugene to face an Oregon team looking for revenge.

These two squads met just five conference games ago (Jan. 18), in Seattle, with Washington erasing a first-half deficit on the strength of a 53-point second half on 65% FG (their best offensive output of the season for any half) to defeat the Ducks, 85-77. The Huskies were powered by their impressive backcourt, G Nigel Williams-Goss and G Andrew Andrews, which combined for 41 points (15-for-33 FG), and an unexpected contribution from freshman F Donaven Dorsey who scored 13 points in 18 minutes. Most importantly, they had the nation’s leading shot-blocker, seven-foot C Robert Upshaw (10.9 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 4.5 BPG) in the fold, contributing 13-12-5 in the win. Upshaw will not be available on Wednesday (or anytime in the future for the Huskies) as he’s been dismissed from the team as of Jan. 26.

Oregon, boasting the Pac-12’s best scoring offense (76.4 PPG, 24th NCAA), should be feasting on the thought of playing the Huskies sans Upshaw, as Washington is 0-2 since losing their rim protector extraordinaire while allowing season highs of 84 and 90 points in the process (Stanford, Cal). Their most recent loss (at home vs Cal) was the result of a three from seldom-used Bears guard, Sam Singer, with five seconds left. Oregon is coming off a thrilling 68-67 overtime road win (and cover) over Arizona State last Friday, overcoming a buzzer-beating three by the Sun Devils to tie and force overtime. Oregon is 5-0 at home SU since 2011 versus Washington (2-3 ATS), and is 13-2 SU (7-7 ATS) this season at Matthew Knight Arena. Washington is, oddly enough, remarkably consistent with identical SU and ATS records in conference this season (3-6). As mentioned earlier, they’re 0-2 without Upshaw in the lineup while hitting the OVER in both of those contests.

There’s no getting around it: This is an entirely different Washington Huskies team without Upshaw, who went from one of the best stories in college basketball to one of the saddest all in one fell swoop. Washington’s season stats – especially on defense (38.3% FG, 23rd NCAA; 6.3 BPG, 7th NCAA) can be proverbially thrown out the window. Granted, there’s a small sample size of data without Upshaw; the Huskies don’t have another seven-footer walking through the door as a replacement. Currently Washington is 6th in the nation in two-point FG% defense (40.4%). In their last three games (two without Upshaw) the Huskies are at 55.8% (314th NCAA) in that same measure.

To compensate for this, a team that had a defense-first identity, especially in terms of pace (under 60 poss/gm average in three conference wins and 69.5 poss/gm in six conference losses) is now forced to play faster on offense with a four-guard lineup featuring Williams-Goss (15.2 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 6.1 APG), Andrews (12.8 PPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.7 threes/gm), G Mike Anderson (8.1 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 2.1 APG) and sixth man G Darin Johnson (3.7 PPG; 9 PPG, 26 mpg since Upshaw’s dismissal). The aforementioned Dorsey, who had a career game in his first meeting with the Ducks, will hope to repeat that performance as he’s been invisible when his squad needs him most (four points in his last two games).

F Shawn Kemp Jr. (9.9 PPG, 3.7 RPG) must also start playing like his namesake, as the only member of the starting five over 6-foot-4 who sees 20+ minutes per game. Kemp has a Bargnani-esque aversion to rebounding the ball. He’s never collected double-digit rebounds in a game in his career, and has been below five boards in seven of his nine conference games. One bench player who has stepped up to fill some of Upshaw’s void is six-foot-five junior G Quevyn Winters (13 points in 13 minutes versus Stanford; five points and four steals in 25 minutes versus Cal). If Washington is going to pull the upset, though, it’s going to be on the back of sophomore sensation, Williams-Goss, who’s played 40 minutes in each of the last two games (with averages of 24.5 PPG, 6 RPG and 6.5 APG on 64.5% FG).

Oregon is king of the thriller, with four overtime games this season (including their most recent victory over Arizona State). As referenced, they like to score and they do it by sharing the ball and hoisting threes with the fastest tempo in the league (1st in Pac 12 in assists and three’s attempted; 71.1 poss/gm, 24th NCAA). The Ducks don’t think much of defense (71.1 PPG allowed, 11th Pac 12, 294th NCAA) but are markedly better on that side of the ball at home (66.5 PPG allowed in 15 home games). Oregon is led by G Joseph Young (18.7 PPG, 3.6 APG, 2.3 threes/gm, 93% FT – tie 3rd NCAA), who never met a shot he didn’t like (15.1 FGA – 1st Pac 12). Young has scuffled a bit in conference play – only one game with 20+ points in his last 8, but F Elgin Cook (12.6 PPG) has stepped up to average just under 15 points in conference play on 54% FG.

Even though Upshaw won’t be on the court, this game still features the Pac 12’s best shot blocker – only he’s F Jordan Bell (5.8 PPG, 7 RPG, 3.2 BPG – 6th NCAA) from the Ducks. The 6-foot-9 freshman has been a revelation for the Ducks, blocking at least one shot in every game this season, while putting himself on the radar for NBA scouts with his athleticism and potential. Rounding out the Ducks rotation is a stable of players that coach Dana Altman can rely on for production as F Dillon Brooks (12.6 PPG), G Jalil Abdul-Bassit (8 PPG, 1.6 threes/gm), F Dwayne Benjamin (7.3 PPG) and G Ahmaad Rorie (5.9 PPG, 2.4 APG) all average more than 18 minutes per game.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.....

                    13) Syracuse pulled the plug on its postseason Wednesday, so we know two things:
                    a) They don't think they're good enough to make the NCAAs this year anyway
                    b) They're going on probation and are trying to use this year's tapping out to chop a year or two off the end of the sentence.

                    12) This changes the ACC tournament, which becomes a 14-team event, so we lose a game on Tuesday March 10; the ACC's #10 seed gets a bye they wouldn't have gotten had Syracuse been playing in the tournament.

                    11) Jim Boeheim is 70 years old and his program is going on probation; could the end be near? He'll be approaching his mid-70's by time Syracuse comes off probation. I wonder what former Syracuse assistant Bernie Fine thinks about all this?

                    10) Atlanta Falcons are in hot water for piping in artificial crowd noise when the other team had the ball, to screw up their signals in a domed stadium, where the noise has nowhere to go. It is my duty to inform you that Thomas Dimitroff, GM of the Falcons, worked for the Patriots before he came to work for the Falcons. Dimitroff was in Foxboro during the height of the Spygate years.

                    9) Why is it illegal for NFL teams to text the sidelines during games? Is this the case of having too many rules? Cleveland is in trouble for this one.

                    8) Phil Jackson was a supporting player for the Knicks, he was a Hall of Fame coach and so far, he is an awful team president. Those three jobs are all different; being really good at one of them doesn't mean you'll be any good at the others.

                    7) Handicapping is difficult; Indiana covered by a point Tuesday at Wisconsin, in a game where they made 13 of 24 from the arc, numbers that would normally signal an upset win, but they lost by 14. That tells me that Wisconsin would cover this game way more often than not, but it didn't happen Tuesday. Its a tough game to beat.

                    6) Memo to drivers in the Albany area: Putting your turn signal on doesn't give you the right to cut off drivers in other lanes. Its icy out there. Please be careful.

                    5) Kent State's Jimmy Hall has mono, is out for a while; he is averaging 15 ppg.

                    4) Oregon's star hooper Joseph Young is taking one class this semester, as he wraps up his education in Eugene-- sign language. Must be a quiet class.

                    3) Nets trainer Tim Walsh saved a man's life at practice earlier this week; scout had a heart attack and Walsh knew what to do and did it and the guy is going to be OK. It must be a good feeling going to sleep knowing you saved someone's life.

                    2) I did my taxes Wednesday; why on God's green earth do they ask you if you want to give $3 to the Presidential election funds? Seriously, I can think of 1,000 things I'd do with my money before I'd give it to a politician.

                    1) Cordell Broadus signed with UCLA, so the Snoop Dogg/Les Miles pairing will not happen, but Jim Mora Jr coaches the Bruins, so there is still hope for an ESPN Gameday interview with Snoop and Jim Mora Sr.-- that would be great TV.

Top 25 roundup: Purdue upsets Ohio State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue got 20 points from guard Rapheal Davis and 14 from guard Jon Octeus and used a key 10-0 run in the second half to upset 20th-ranked Ohio State 60-58 Wednesday night in Mackey Arena.

The Boilermakers posted their third consecutive victory against a ranked opponent for the first time since 1979. Before beating then-No. 25 Iowa on Jan. 24 and then-No. 22 Indiana on Jan. 28, the Boilermakers had lost 13 straight games against ranked opponents. Purdue (15-8, 7-3 Big Ten) won its fourth consecutive game overall.

A free throw by guard Kendall Stephens with 4.9 seconds left accounted for the final score just before Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell (20 points) missed a potential winning 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

Ohio State (17-6, 6-4) played without starting forward Marc Loving, who did not make the trip from Columbus. School officials did not provide details before the game as to why Loving did not travel with the team.

                              No. 4 Duke 72, Georgia Tech 66

DURHAM, N.C. -- Guard Quinn Cook scored all 17 of his points in the second half, and the fourth-ranked Blue Devils fended off a threat from the Yellow Jackets.

Forward Justise Winslow added 15 points and center Jahlil Okafor provided 14 points for Duke (19-3, 6-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), which played its first home game since Jan. 19. Reserve guard Matt Jones chipped in with 11 points, all in the first half.

Guard Chris Bolden led Georgia Tech with 16 points, guard Marcus Georges-Hunt had 14 points and center Demarco Cox scored 10.

                              No. 7 Villanova 70, Marquette 52

PHILADELPHIA -- The seventh-ranked Wildcats started slowly, endured a poor shooting night, turned the ball over and still were far better than the Golden Eagles.

Villanova (20-2, 7-2 Big East) earned its seventh win in eight games. Marquette (10-12, 2-8) endured its sixth consecutive defeat, the team's longest skid since 1990-91.

Villanova shot just 37.7 percent from the field and turned the ball over 15 times, but five Wildcats scored in double figures. Junior point guard Ryan Arcidiacono paced Villanova with 18 points -- matching a season high -- on 5-of-9 shooting, including 4-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc.

No. 10 Notre Dame 71, Boston College 63

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The 10th-ranked Irish led by as many as 25 points in the first half and then held off the pesky Eagles for an Atlantic Coast Conference victory.

Boston College (9-12, 1-8 ACC) whittled away at Notre Dame lead in the second half, closing to six points on three occasions in the final 2:24, but each time the Fighting Irish answered on the next possession to keep the Eagles at bay.

Senior guard Jerian Grant and sophomore guard Steve Vasturia led Notre Dame (21-3, 9-2) with 17 points each. Junior post Zach Auguste scored 16 points. Junior guard Olivier Hanlan powered Boston College with 28 points. Senior guard Aaron Brown scored 13 points.

                              No. 16 Wichita State 62, Bradley 59

PEORIA, Ill. -- It was a little closer than most expected, but No. 16 Wichita State did post the expected bounceback win.

Barely surviving a late run by Bradley, the Shockers moved into a first-place tie with Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley Conference with a win at Peoria Civic Center.

Guard Ron Baker scored 13 points to lead a balanced Wichita State offense. Forward Darius Carter and guard Tekele Cotton contributed 10 each as the Shockers (20-3, 10-1) shot 48 percent from the field despite going the final 12:38 without a field goal.

Point guard Tramique Sutherland tallied a game-high 18 points for the Braves (7-17, 2-9), who were down to 10 players due to injuries and suspensions.

                              No. 17 Maryland 64, Penn State 58

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Dez Wells scored a game-high 23 points, including five crucial points at the end that helped No. 17 Maryland hold on to defeat Penn State in a Big Ten game.

Wells, a forward, made a layup with just over a minute left that gave Maryland (19-4, 7-3) a 59-55 lead. He added two free throws, grabbed a big rebound and hit one more free throw to put the Terrapins up 62-58 with 23.1 seconds left.

Maryland guard Melo Trimble sealed the win when he made two free throws with 6.6 seconds left. Trimble didn't make a basket for the second straight game but had a career-high eight assists.

No. 18 Virginia Commonwealth 72, George Mason 60

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Guard Melvin Johnson had 17 points as the 18th-ranked Rams rallied from a nine-point deficit in the first half to beat the Patriots in an Atlantic 10 contest.

First-place VCU (18-4, 8-1), with a deep bench against taller George Mason, won for the 13th time in 14 games. Rams standout guard Treveon Graham, who did not play Jan. 17 due to high ankle sprain, played just 11 minutes in the first half Wednesday and did not play in the second half as he wore a brace on his ankle.

The Patriots (7-14, 2-7) lost for the seventh time in eight games despite 15 points from forward Jalen Jenkins. Reserve guard Patrick Holloway added 13 points for George Mason after he missed the previous three games with a blood disorder.

                              No. 19 Baylor 77, TCU 57

WACO, Texas -- Baylor balanced its inside-outside attack on the offensive end to overpower TCU.

The No. 19 Bears thrived as forward Rico Gathers scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, guard Kenny Chery added 13 points and six assists and Baylor defeated TCU at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor (17-5, 5-4 Big 12) used a 13-0 run midway through the second half to distance itself from the Horned Frogs and win for the fifth time in the last seven Big 12 games. TCU (14-8, 1-8) lost its fifth straight conference game, all against teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.

                              Providence 74, No. 24 Georgetown 71

WASHINGTON -- Forward Ben Bentil had 16 points and 11 rebounds as Providence rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half for a win over No. 24 Georgetown.

Forward LaDontae Henton scored 16 points and guard Kris Dunn had 12 points and nine assists for the Friars (17-6, 7-3). Providence, which won the first meeting at home last month, outscored Georgetown 22-7 after trailing 59-46 with 11:41 remaining.

Guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 21 points and made five 3-pointers for the Hoyas (15-7, 7-4), but his game-tying attempt in the final seconds rimmed out.

Oklahoma State 65, No. 25 Texas 63 (OT)

AUSTIN, Texas -- Oklahoma State built a lead, blew the lead, then battled in overtime to beat No. 25 Texas at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Cowboys won it where they nearly lost it -- at the foul line. Guard Phil Forte made two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining in the extra period to seal the win. Texas point guard Isaiah Taylor missed on a desperation, running 3-pointer as time expired.

Oklahoma State finished just 20-for-29 from the line and missed the front end of two one-and-one opportunities late in regulation, aiding a Longhorns rally.

In a game of major implications for both teams, the Cowboys bounced back from a home loss to Oklahoma to improve to 15-7, 5-5 in the Big 12.

                                Cincinnati at SMU

                                February 5, 2015

SMU has had to overcome adversity galore this season. First, the nation's No. 1 recruit Emmanuel Mudiay never arrived on campus. There was reportedly an academic situation in play but whatever the case, Mudiay decided to go overseas this year before becoming a lottery pick (currently listed at No. 2 at NBADraft.net) at this summer's NBA Draft.

SMU had to play its first 10 games without stud post player Markus Kennedy, who was dealing with academic issues. Then on Jan. 16, starting guard Keith Frazier was declared ineligible by the NCAA for the rest of the season due to (you guessed it) an academic issue. Frazier, a sophomore who was averaging 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, was a McDonald's All-American coming out of high school in Dallas.

Nevertheless, Larry Brown's team has won eight in a row and hasn't tasted defeat since a 56-50 loss at Cincinnati on Jan. 3. During this surge, the Mustangs have cashed tickets at a 5-1-2 ATS clip.

SMU (18-4 straight up, 9-7-3 against the spread) will get a chance to avenge that most recent defeat Thursday night when the Bearcats come to Moody Coliseum in Abilene. The Westgate SuperBook opened the Mustangs as six-point favorites.

Cincinnati (15-6 SU, 9-8 ATS) saw its four-game winning streak snapped Sunday in a 50-46 loss at East Carolina as a 10.5-point road favorite. Octavius Ellis had 14 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots in defeat.

The Bearcats have had their own adversity to deal with this season. Head coach Mick Cronin was suffering from headaches before doctors discovered an unruptured aneurysm in mid-December. The non-life-threatening condition has forced Cronin to stay off the sidelines for games, although he has been present at most practices and game-day shoot-arounds at home. He maintains hope that he'll be cleared by doctors to return to the sidelines before the season is over.

SMU won a 75-56 decision over UCF as a 19-point home favorite this past Saturday. Ryan Manuel was the catalyst against the Knights, burying 9-of-10 shots and scoring a team-high 20 points. He also pulled down four rebounds and dished out four assists.

Markus Kennedy produced 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Yanick Moreira added 12 points, six boards, two seals and one blocked shot, while Nic Moore finished with eight points, 10 assists and four steals.

Moore leads SMU in scoring (14.5 PPG), assists (5.4 APG) and steals (1.4 SPG). Moreira is averaging 11.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, while Kennedy is averaging 11.5 PPG and 5.6 RPG.

SMU has won 13 of its 14 home games outright, compiling a 6-3-2 spread record. When listed as single-digit home 'chalk,' the Mustangs have posted a 2-1-1 spread ledger. The lone outright defeat came against Arkansas, which went into Moody and won by a 78-72 count as a four-point road underdog on Nov. 25.

Cincy has been an underdog five times, going 3-2 ATS with a pair of outright victories. The other win as a 'dog came at N.C. St. (76-60).

When these teams met in the Queen City on Jan. 3, Cincy prevailed by six as a one-point home underdog. The 106 combined points stayed 'under' the 117.5-point total.

Ellis led the way for the winners with 12 points, six boards and three steals. In the losing effort, Manuel had a team-best 14 points. Moore struggled badly, making only 3-of-11 shots and committing more turnovers (six) than assists (four).

In the two previous seasons, Cincinnati was the best 'under' team in the country -- by far! With Justin Jackson defending the rim and Sean Kilpatrick serving as Cronin's lone consistent scorer, grinder games were basically a given for the Bearcats. The 'under' has gone 7-6 overall this year for Cincy, 4-2 in its road assignments.

The 'under' is 9-7-1 overall for SMU, but the 'over' is 5-3-1 in its home games. Regardless of the venue, the 'under' has cashed in back-to-back games for the Mustangs and three of their last four.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

-- In a surprising development Wednesday, Syracuse announced a self-imposed postseason ban for self-reported violations in 2007. The issues stem from academics involving former players Fab Melo and James Southerland. The ban will include the ACC Tournament, NCAA Tournament and NIT for this season. According to multiple reports, Jim Boeheim's job is safe.

-- VCU suffered a crushing blow this past weekend when senior guard Briante Weber was lost for the season to a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus. Weber, a senior, was on pace to break the all-time NCAA record for career steals (358), but he will come up 12 shy of that mark. Weber was averaging team-highs in assists (4.2 APG) and steals (3.9 SPG). He was scoring at an 8.1 PPG clip and shooting 41.4 percent from 3-point range.

-- Just an hour before Wednesday's 64-47 loss at Texas Tech, Kansas St. announced the indefinite suspensions of sophomore Marcus Foster and freshman Malek Harris. Foster, the Wildcats' leading scorer as a freshman last year, is averaging a team-best 14.0 PPG. Harris is averaging 2.2 PPG.

-- Michigan's Derrick Walton will miss third consecutive game tonight vs. Iowa. The Wolverines were already down their best player in Caris LeVert, and now Walton is out for the foreseeable future. The sophomore guard is averaging 10.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Walton is dealing with a foot injury that Michigan has decided to rest rather than have surgery (for now). As a testament to John Beilein's outstanding coaching, this team has continued to play hard and cash tickets. The Wolverines have covered the number in four straight games with a pair of outright victories. Both defeats (vs. Wisconsin and at Michigan St.) came in overtime.

-- Penn St. improved to 7-0 ATS as an underdog when it lost 64-58 last night at Maryland. PSU took the cash as an 8.5-point underdog in College Park.

-- Kent St. sophomore Jimmy Hall is out indefinitely with mono. Hall is the Flashes' leading scorer (15.1) and rebounder (7.5 RPG).

-- Ohio State's Marc Loving didn't make the trip to West Lafayette for last night's 60-58 to Purdue. Loving (11.7 PPG) has "temporarily lost his privilege to wear the Scarlet and Gray," the school said in a statement released one hour before tip.

-- Creighton handed Xavier its first home loss of the season last night in overtime. The Bluejays won outright as 13.5-point underdogs, hooking up money-line supporters with a monster +800 payout (risk $100 to win $800).

-- In another Big East upset, Providence won at Georgetown as a 6.5-point puppy. The Friars got the victory as a +225 'dog on the money line.
