    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Jon Lester pitched 219.2 innings LY and never threw a pickoff throw to first base the entire season. No need to have a good move if no one ever sees it.

-- Atlanta Hawks lost in New Orleans, ending their 19-game winning streak.

-- Cavaliers have won 11 in a row; don't hear anything about them anymore.

-- Toronto Maple Leafs lost their last nine games, scoring a shockingly low seven goals during the losing streak.

-- There are 187 sports book locations in the state of Nevada.

-- Underdogs were 8-0 vs spread in NBA last night; under was 7-1.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a frigid night.....

    13) We had a foot of snow here in upstate New York the last 36 hours and as I type this is six below zero outside. Awesome. I'm not a big fan of winter.

    12) Was Monday the easiest day ever to be a radio talk show host? Sit there, take calls about how dumb the Seahawks were, agree with everything that is said, play some commercials, collect your money and go home. Almost as easy as handing the ball to your best running back when you have the ball on the 1-ya-- oh, forget it.

Maybe critique some of the Super Bowl commercials too, but I'm not a commercial watcher, though I like the Harry Chapin song they played during one commercial.

    11) Tigers' DH Victor Martinez was intentionally walked 28 times last year, most ever for a switch hitter. I'm hoping they bat Cespedes behind Victor this year.

    10) Someone named Scott Walker is running for President. Apparently he is the governor of Wisconsin-- his Wikipedia page says he went to Marquette but makes no mention of him graduating from there. When was the last time a US President wasn't a college graduate? He had a 2.59 GPA when he left school.

    9) Halftime score from Saturday: Temple 28, Tulane 8. Green Wave isn't a bad team either, but long road trips and day games in different time zones lead to bad games. If you score eight points in a half, it is time to roll the balls out and lets the kids run up and down rather than lose scoring less than 50 points.

    8) Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins' son is a contributor as a freshman at Michigan; he wears his dad's number 24, but I guess they decided the kid would be better off not playing for his father. He would help Stanford, too.

    7) Mets signed Lucas Duda to a $4.2M contract for this year, avoiding arbitration. If you were unsure whether this is a great country, that should clinch it for you.

    6) Doc Rivers was complaining a little Monday about his team's current 8-game road trip, which was caused by the Grammys being at Staples Center Sunday night. Kings and Lakers are on long road trips too, but Kings' trip is only four games, the Lakers' only five. People that oiwn Staples own part of the Lakers/Kings, but they don't own any part of the Clippers.

    5) Clippers led Brooklyn 96-87 with 1:40 left last night, but lost 102-100; games like this could haunt LA when the playoffs roll around, if they wind up playing a Game 7 on the road somewhere.

    4) Nets have good uniforms, but also the simplest: just black-and-white, no third color but they're really nice. Apparently starting in March they're going to be wearing throwback uniforms to honor the old ABA Nets, red, white and blue.

    3) Every time I see Chris Paul play, I am reminded of this story:

Paul was tight with his grandfather, who was a big Wake Forest fan, so he was happy when his grandson committed to play for the Deacons, but the grandfather passed away late in Paul's senior season in high school, way too early at age 61.

In Chris Paul's last high school home game, he scored 61 points, then when he was taken out of the game, he collapsed in uncontrollable grief as he walked to the bench. To this day, it is one of the most emotional scenes I've ever seen, anywhere.

    2) Jermaine Kearse made one of the greatest catches in NFL history at a huge time in a Super Bowl, but now he is just a footnote in history. Hell, David Tyree wrote a book after his catch in a Super Bowl. Losing team doesn't write many books.

    1) Five kids went to the Cal-Davis game Saturday dressed as bananas; they sat in the front row, got on TV a lot and rooted like hell for the Aggies, who rallied late to beat Cal Poly in overtime. Not many NBA fans dress up as bananas; thats one of the big differences between college and pro ball. College fans are more enthuisiastic.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Indiana at Wisconsin
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Hoosiers at Wisconsin Badgers (OFF, OFF)

Fourth-ranked Wisconsin goes after its 14th victory in the last 15 meetings with Indiana when it hosts the No. 25 Hoosiers on Tuesday. The Badgers are atop the Big Ten standings and the current crop of Wisconsin players hasn’t won a conference crown. “If you look further ahead, you’re going to slip up,” guard Josh Gasser told reporters. “We understand how competitive this league is; every night is going to be a battle and there’s a lot of season left. We haven’t done anything yet.”

The Hoosiers slipped off the pace in the Big Ten race with consecutive losses before bouncing back with a victory over Rutgers on Saturday. “We’re happy to be in the mix, but we’re not satisfied at all,” guard James Blackmon Jr. told reporters. “We know we had a couple games that we could have got under our belt, so at Wisconsin we know that it’s going to be a great environment and a huge game, so I think we’re going to come prepared for it.” The Badgers have won four straight games after defeating Iowa on Saturday.

              TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT INDIANA (16-6, 6-3 Big Ten): Forward Troy Williams averages 13 points and a team-leading 6.3 rebounds and is coming off a strong performance against Rutgers with 14 points and tying a career best with 12 boards. “That’s the Troy Williams that we need to have,” Hoosiers coach Tom Crean told reporters. “The points to me are a byproduct of his efficiency, his activity, his desire to get to the basket, his desire to deflect and defend, his desire to rebound, the energy that he played with and usually when he plays like that, he gets the points.” Blackmon averages a team-best 16.5 points with Ferrell close behind at 16.1 and both players have made 51 3-point baskets.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (19-2, 7-1): Center Frank Kaminsky is on a tear with four 20-point outings in five games and had 24 points and nine rebounds against Iowa. The 7-footer leads the Badgers in scoring (17.6), rebounding (8.3), blocked shots (33) and steals (19) and is tied for second with 23 3-point baskets. Forwards Sam Dekker (12.6) and Nigel Hayes (12.4) also average in double digits but Wisconsin continues to ride a defense that allows just 55.5 points per game.

              TRENDS:

*The Over is 5-1 in Indiana's last six overall
*The Over is 4-1 in Wisconsin's last five overall
*Wisconsin is 1-3-1 ATS in their last five home games
*The underdog is 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings

                NCAAB

                Tuesday, February 3

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAB small conferences

Team to watch: Murray State Racers (17-4 SU, 10-6-1 ATS)

Upcoming: at Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, vs. Tennessee-Martin on Saturday

Murray State (17-4, 7-0 Ohio Valley) has won 15 games in a row. With a solid but unspectacular 10-6-1 ATS mark overall, the Racers are an impressive 9-2 ATS in their last 11 contests.

A big reason for their recent surge is Cameron Payne, who was named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday. The sophomore point guard poured in a career-high 33 points to deal Eastern Illinois its first loss before scoring 22 in a victory over SIUE. Payne (19.2 ppg, 5.9 apg) has delivered double-figures in 20 of 21 outings this season.

The Racers’ .489 field-goal percentage is tops in the conference and 15th best in the nation. Thursday’s opponent, Eastern Kentucky, is second to last in the OVC in field-goal percentage defense at .451.

Murray State is 7-2 ATS on the road during the 2014-15 campaign. EKU is 6-8 ATS overall and 1-3 ATS at home.

Team to beware: Western Illinois Leathernecks (7-11 SU, 4-10 ATS)

Upcoming: vs. IUPUI on Friday, vs. North Dakota State on Sunday

Western Illinois has lost five consecutive games and is 0-5 ATS in the current stretch.

The Leathernecks have not been helped by the absence of Mike Miklusak (6.5 ppg, 4.0 apg), who has missed the past three games and almost the entirety of four due to a leg injury. A starter, the sophomore forward is averaging 21.1 minutes per contest. Miklusak is listed as questionable for Friday’s home game against IUPUI.

WIU is currently mired in an alarming scoring drought. After going for at least 73 points in three straight outings and in five of six, it has scored no more than 58 in five straight. The team is 325th nationally in field-goal percentage (.392) and shot just 20 of 54 (.370) on Jan. 16 against one of its upcoming opponents, North Dakota State.

Western Illinois is 4-10 ATS this season. IUPUI is 12-7 ATS and a stellar 8-3 ATS on the road.

Total team: Massachusetts Minutemen (10-9 SU, 3-9 O/U)

Upcoming: vs. Dayton on Thursday, at Saint Louis on Saturday

Massachusetts has more turnovers than assists on the season (274 to 255, to be exact), leaving it 12th out of 14 teams in the Atlantic 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio. The Minutemen have recorded more turnovers than helpers in three of their last four games after doing the same (13 to 10) in a 62-56 loss at Saint Joseph’s last Wednesday.

“We took a step backwards today taking care of the ball, taking good shots, and sharing the basketball,” head coach Derek Kellogg said after his team went down to the Hawks.

“We’re not making our one-footers,” guard Derrick Gordon added, as if the problem is a general one as opposed to being isolated to just the single game against Saint Joseph’s.

The under is 9-3 in games involving the Minutemen this season, including 4-0 in their last four.

                  ACC Analysis

                  February 2, 2015

With the Super Bowl in the rear view mirror, the next big event on the sports stage is college basketball's season-ending tournaments. Since 1997, college basketball's national champion has come from several different conferences: the Pac 10 (Arizona), SEC (Kentucky and Florida), Big 10 (Michigan State), the ACC (Duke, Maryland, North Carolina), Big 12 (Kansas) and the old Big East (UConn, Syracuse, Louisville). Over the next few weeks, let's examine some of the top hoop teams in each conference, starting this week with the ACC.

Duke: Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s team bounced back from back-to-back losses to NC State (87-75) and Miami (90-74) with an impressive thumping at No. 6 Louisville (77-68) as an underdog. They are Top 20 in the nation in scoring and shooting behind super 6-11 freshman Jahlil Okafor (18.5 ppg, 9 rpg).

It’s not all about youth, either, with senior guard Quinn Cook (14 ppg) and 6-9 junior Amile Jefferson (9 ppg, 7.5 rpg) helping out. They topped Michigan State (81-71) early in the year shooting 54% and Wisconsin (80-70) on the road, shooting 65% and allowing .407%. Duke outscored Wisconsin, 32-22 in the paint. It was Duke's highest field goal percentage against a ranked team in the last 15 seasons.

Virginia: The Cavaliers are getting it done with a terrific one-two punch of 6-5 junior Malcolm Brogdon (13 ppg) and 6-6 junior Justin Anderson (14 ppg). Both are outstanding free throw shooters, over 80% from the line, and from beyond the arc. Virginia plays great defense, holding Georgia Tech to 28 points and No. 13 Notre Dame to 56 points and 34% shooting on their home court. They are currently in the middle of a stretch playing three Top 20 teams in Duke, North Carolina and Louisville, so this is a big week for the Cavs. Totals players take note: They have been on a 5-0-1 run 'under' the total in midseason with that strangling defense.

North Carolina: The Tar Heels have a powerhouse offensive team that is Top 20 in the nation in points and rebounds and assists. They have a power frontcourt of 6-8 sophomore Kennedy Meeks (13 ppg, 8 rpg), 6-9 junior Brice Johnson (12 ppg, 8 rpg) and 6-5 junior J.P. Tokoto (9 ppg, 5 rpg) up front.

The sparkplug on offense is junior guard Marcus Paige (14 ppg), leading a recent 5-1 run over the total. North Carolina has a pair of wins over No. 22 UCLA (78-56), No. 5 Louisville (72-71) and No. 18 Florida (75-64), but also lost 71-70 to No. 13 Notre Dame and got thumped by Kentucky (84-70).

Notre Dame: The Irish have been scorching the nets all season, Top 10 in the country in scoring and shooting, over 52% as a team. 6-5 senior Jerian Grant (17 ppg) leads the team in scoring, but three other guys average over 10 ppg in 6-5 senior Pat Connaughton (14 ppg), 6-10 Zach Auguste (13.5 ppg) and sophomore guard Demetrius Jackson (13 ppg). The Fighting Irish are 21-6 over the total after a win.

But have they really been tested? Notre Dame won at North Carolina (71-70) and needed OT to beat Michigan State at home (each game by 1 point), plus needing two overtimes to top Georgia Tech. They had home court against Virginia, but allowed 49% shooting in a 62-56 defeat. Notre Dame is 7-15-1 ATS against a team with a winning record, plus 6-18-2 ATS home.

Louisville: The Cardinals are no pushovers in the low post, Top 20 in the nation in rebounding behind 6-8 junior Montrezl Harrell (15 ppg, 9 rpg), 6-5 senior Wayne Blackshear (12 ppg, 5 rpg) and 6-10 freshman Chinanu Onuaku and 6-10 Mangok Mathiang (5.5 rpg).

But the offehnse hasn’t exactly impressed when stepping up, losing 63-52 at home to Duke, 58-50 to Kentucky and blowing a 13-point lead at banged up North Carolina. Louisville took a 63-50 lead over UNC with 8:43 to play in the 2nd half. From that point on, UNC outscored Louisville 22-8, shooting 8-13 from the floor while Louisville shot a dismal 3-12. They were also outscored 40-26 in the paint. That was part of a stretch where Louisville went 2-8-1 against the spread.

                    Tuesday's Games to Watch

                    February 3, 2015

INDIANA HOOSIERS (16-6) at WISCONSIN BADGERS (19-2)

                    Kohl Center - Madison, WI
                    Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. ET
                    Sportsbook.ag Line Wisconsin -15

In this top-25 clash of Big Ten powers, No.5 Wisconsin looks to continue their home dominance over No.22 Indiana.

Ever since the Badgers’ stunning loss at Rutgers three weeks ago, Wisconsin has gone back to looking like the class of the Big Ten, reeling off four straight wins (Nebraska, Iowa, at Michigan, at Iowa) to stand atop the conference standings at 7-1. Stumbling a bit on the road, Indiana (6-3, Big Ten) finds itself with a tall order if it wants to keep slipping down the conference standings: Win for just the second time in 15 tries on the Badgers home floor since 2000. You read that right: Wisconsin is 13-1 SU (10-7 ATS) versus Indiana over the past 14 years at the Kohl Center.

Indiana does own the Big Ten’s highest scoring offense (80.3 PPG, 14th NCAA), but unfortunately the offensive fireworks for the Hoosiers have taken a precipitous dip in conference play (down to 71.4 PPG), as Wisconsin’s steady, highly-efficient attack in conference play (73.6 PPG 1st Big 10; 1.27 Points/Possession, 1st in NCAA) doesn’t look to meet much resistance with the smallish Indiana defense (71.9 PPG allowed, last in Big Ten conference play). Indiana is struggling ATS recently (0-3) while Wisconsin is 2-1 ATS over that stretch.

Even with two of the conference’s best offenses in play, Wisconsin’s tops-in-the-conference defense and slow pace (55.5 PPG allowed, 7th NCAAA; 60.9 possessions-per-game, 341st NCAA), combined with their penchant for hitting the under at home (64%) suggests this may be a lower scoring affair than current offensive numbers belie.

Indiana has some of the best perimeter firepower in the country, as they rely heavily on the long ball to supplement their offensive attack (8.9 threes/gm, 18th NCAA; 40.2% from three, 15th NCAA). Above all else, this is the Hoosier’s “puncher’s chance” against Wisconsin, as the Badger’s three-point field goal defense has been mediocre in conference play (37.6% threes against, 12th Big Ten, 241st NCAA). As Duke exposed, by ripping through Wisconsin’s defense to the tune of 65.2% from the field (58.3% from three) in December, the Badgers’ defense isn’t invincible at home.

Junior G Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell (16.1 PPG, 4.7 APG, 2.3 threes/gm) has been the centerpiece of the Hoosier attack now for two seasons. Ferrell struggled mightily to start conference play (7-for-32 FG in his first six Big 10 games), but has since done a complete 180, scorching the nets at a 55% clip (31-for-56 FG) including 16 made threes over his last four games.

The reason Indiana is in the top-25, though, is that Ferrell has help this season, in the form of sensational freshman G James Blackmon Jr. (16.5 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 2.3 threes/gm). In 2013 Ferrell led the Hoosiers in usage rate/possession (25.1%). This season, with less of the offensive burden, Ferrell is third on the team in usage, behind Blackmon and high-flying F Troy Williams – one of the most improved players in the country (13 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 57.5% FG).

Indiana normally plays five perimeter players at a time, especially due to the injury of top defensive big man, F Hanner Mosquera-Perea. F Collin Hartman, who along with Williams goes 6-foot-7 and 215lbs, will be asked to supply defensive help for the Badgers’ star-studded frontcourt. While he’s been serviceable with the minutes bump in Mosquera-Perea’s absence (7.3 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.0 BPG) it’s still a matchup that Bo Ryan will definitely be looking to exploit. Blackmon Jr. isn’t the only freshman who contributes to the Hoosiers as G Robert Johnson (9.3 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 1.0 SPG) rounds out the starting five.

To score 73+ points per game on less than 60 possessions per game is just absurd, but that’s what Wisconsin does. If Wisconsin can keep their preferred pace (less than 60 possessions in six games straight) versus an Indiana team which hasn’t played a game below 60 possessions the entire season, it should make the Hoosiers incredibly uncomfortable.

At the fulcrum of Bo Ryan’s efficiency-machine is preseason All-American, do-it-all big man, C Frank Kaminsky (17.6 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 53.6% FG). Kaminsky is the current active leader in assists per-game (with G Traevon Jackson on the shelf - fractured foot), and also offers the versatility of averaging more than one steal (1.0), block (1.7) and three (1.3) made per game.

Flanking Kaminsky on the front line are F Nigel Hayes (12.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 54% FG) and F Sam Dekker (12.6 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 52% FG). G Josh Gasser has always been a minutes-eater that Bo Ryan can trust to play mistake-free basketball, but this season he’s turned into quite the three point specialist. Gasser doesn’t shoot much, but when he does – odds are he’ll be behind the arc: 85% (34 of 40) of Gasser’s conf. play shot attempts are threes.

Beneath the headliners, though, Wisconsin’s most important player at this moment might be sophomore G Bronson Koenig (6.1 PPG, 2.1 APG). Leading the team in minutes-per-game (36.5) since the aforementioned Jackson’s injury, all Koenig has done since ascending to the starting job is win. His 11.3 PPG average, along with 2.5 makes from three (on 50% shooting) and 0.5 turnovers in his four starts shows that the Badgers are in good hands for as long as Jackson is out.

FLORIDA GATORS (12-9) at VANDERBILT COMMODORES (11-10)

                    Memorial Gymnasium - Nashville, TN
                    Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:00 p.m. ET
                    Sportsbook.ag Line Florida -2.5

The Gators go for their third straight victory when they head to Nashville on Tuesday and take on Vanderbilt.

Florida got off to a miserable start this season, but they did beat the Razorbacks 57-56 for their second straight SU victory on Jan. 31. The Gators were 6.5-point favorites in that game though, and they are now 1-4 ATS in their past five games. The Commodores, meanwhile, are really struggling recently. The team has now lost seven straight games and they’ve failed to cover in six of those contests. Vanderbilt has been outrebounded in five straight contests and it hasn't had a game where it has shot over 50% from the field since Jan. 10.

The Gators have won six of the last seven games played in this head-to-head series SU and they are 4-3 ATS in those contests. Florida has also won three of its past five trips to Memorial Gymnasium SU, but the Commodores are 3-2 ATS in those games. Their last meeting in Nashville was Feb. 25, when the Gators won 57-54 as 8.5-point favorites. Florida has struggled on the road this season, going just 2-4 SU and 3-3 ATS when playing on their opponent’s floor. The Gators are also just 1-3 SU and ATS when playing as a road favorite.

Vanderbilt happens to be a solid team when playing at home, going 9-3 SU and 5-4 ATS on the season so far. The team is, however, just 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS when playing conference opponents this season. DeVon Walker (Knee) is still out for Florida and Vanderbilt is not currently dealing with any injuries.

The Gators have won two straight games and they have a golden opportunity to pick up a third with a matchup with a struggling Vanderbilt team. The Gators are a miserable offensive team, averaging just 66.2 PPG (207th in NCAA) on 44.4% shooting (130th in NCAA). They are, however, superb defensively with just 59.0 PPG allowed (24th in NCAA), thanks in part to 7.7 SPG (48th in NCAA).

F Dorian Finney-Smith (13.2 PPG, 5.7 RPG) was huge in a win over Arkansas last game. He finished that game with 16 points (6-of-13 FG), nine rebounds and four assists in 29 minutes of action. Last season, Finney-Smith had 19 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes when he played the Commodores in Nashville. He’ll need to knock down his outside shots like he has all season (40% 3PT), but he also has to continue to be a force on the glass for the Gators to win in this one.

G Michael Frazier II (13.0 PPG, 4.7 RPG) had just nine points in that game at Vanderbilt last year. Frazier has really struggled with consistency this season, scoring 27 points two games ago against Ole Miss but just 11 points total in the two games after it. Frazier has been really off from downtown lately (0-for-9 3PT last two games) and will need to turn that around because he’s been one of their most reliable shooters all season (38% 3PT).

G Kasey Hill (7.5 PPG, 4.3 APG) hasn’t scored in double digits since Jan. 15 and the team really needs him to provide some offense. He is a capable scorer and the team needs more from him or it’ll continue to struggle on that end of the floor. C Jon Horford (6.7 PPG, 4.8 RPG, .9 BPG) could provide a big spark for this team inside. He had eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks in 23 minutes against Arkansas and had a perfect shooting night (3-of-3 FG, 2-of-2 FT).

Vanderbilt has not played well recently and they will desperately try to avoid an eight-game losing streak when they host Florida on Tuesday. The Commodores are a solid offensive team, averaging 69.9 PPG (118th in NCAA) on 47.1% shooting (37th in NCAA). They also are averaging 15.2 APG (36th in NCAA), which means they move the ball very effectively. Where they do struggle is in the rebounding department, as they are only averaging 34.4 RPG (192nd in NCAA). Luckily for them, they’re facing a Florida team that only averages 34.1 RPG (203rd in NCAA).

One player who should make a major impact in this game is C Damian Jones (15.2 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.9 BPG). Jones is a monster in the paint and he uses his size well, which should give Jon Horford problems on both ends of the floor. Jones had nine points in the last meeting between these teams but he finished with just two rebounds, which won’t cut it in this one.

Freshman G Riley LaChance (12.4 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 2.7 APG) is this team’s best scorer from the wing, and he is a very good outside shooter (39% 3PT). LaChance had 11 points and five assists in a loss to Texas A&M last game, but he had just eight points total in the two games before that. His zero points (0-for-5 FG) against Georgia on Jan. 27 were rock bottom for him and he can’t afford to have that type of performance against the Gators.

F Luke Kornet (9.0 PPG, 3.9 RPG) is a seven-footer with serious range (36% 3PT) and he has come on strong as of late, averaging 14.3 PPG over the past three games. He could provide a major spark for this team if he can get his shot to fall. G Wade Baldwin IV (7.5 PPG, 4.3 APG, 3.6 RPG) has averaged 12.3 PPG over the past three for Vanderbilt and has the chance to impact this game in a number of ways. As long as he is able to remain disciplined on defense, he should be in for a solid performance.

                      Tuesday's Tip Sheet

                      February 2, 2015

As the men’s college basketball season heads into the month of February, thoughts start to turn towards which four teams will further sharpen their game over the next four weeks to move into prime position to grab one of the four heavily coveted top seeds in this season’s NCAA Tournament. Turning to Tuesday’s slate, there are two teams that have such lofty aspirations in action starting with Wisconsin playing host to Indiana in the Big Ten. Kentucky will continue its quest for perfection with an SEC matchup at home against Georgia.

Indiana Hoosiers vs. No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers (ESPN, 7 p.m. ET)

                      Opening Odds: Wisconsin -15

Indiana snapped a two-game straight-up skid with this past Saturday’s 72-64 victory against Rutgers, but it has now failed to cover in its last three outings after closing as an 11 ½-point home favorite. The Hoosiers are 6-3 SU in Big Ten play, but just 4-5 against the spread. Freshman guard James Blackmon Jr. exceeded his team-high 16.5 point scoring average with 20 points in Saturday’s win and sophomore forward Troy Williams added 14 points and 12 rebounds to help seal a much needed victory. Indiana is ranked 14th in the nation in scoring with 80.3 points per game and it is shooting 47.8 percent from the field.

The Badgers moved to 7-1 SU in conference play with Saturday’s 74-63 victory against Iowa as 5 ½-point road favorites, but they are only 3-4-1 ATS in those eight games. The total went OVER the closing 130-point line in that win and it has gone OVER in six of eight Big Ten games this year. Senior forward Frank Kaminsky continues to be a one-man wrecking crew with 17.6 points and 8.3 rebounds a game. He exploded for 24 points and nine rebounds against the Hawkeyes. Wisconsin is averaging 73.6 points a game, while holding opposing teams to just 55.5 on the other end of the court.

                      Betting Trends

-- The Hoosiers have failed to cover ATS in five of their last seven road games, but they are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following an ATS loss. The total has gone OVER in six of their last eight games on the road.

-- The Badgers are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five home games and they are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games following an ATS win. The total has stayed UNDER in nine of their last 13 games played on a Tuesday.

-- The underdog in this matchup has gone 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six games. Wisconsin is 9-1 SU in the last 10 meetings with a 7-3 edge ATS.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats (ESPNU, 7 p.m. ET)

                      Opening Odds: Kentucky -19

The Bulldogs’ five-game winning streak both SU and ATS came to a screeching halt in this past Sunday’s 67-50 loss to South Carolina as 4 ½-point underdogs on the road. It was actually just the first time Georgia failed to cover in its last seven games and the total has now stayed UNDER in three of its last four outings. Balance and depth have been two of the keys to success this season with five different players scoring in double figures. Senior guard Marcus Thornton has led the way with 13.5 PPG and 7.3 rebounds, but he remains doubtful for Tuesday after missing his last game with a concussion. The Bulldogs are averaging 71.2 PPG and shooting 44.7 percent from the field.

Winning big has become fairly common with the Wildcats’ run through the SEC with double-digit victories in four of their last five conference games. Despite the dominance on the court, Kentucky has been a tough bet with a 3-5 record ATS in SEC play this year. The total has gone OVER in its last two contests after staying UNDER in its previous four games. The 21-0 SU (11-9-1 ATS) Wildcats are the poster child for balance and depth with seven different players averaging at least 7.5 points a game. They are scoring 74.1 PPG and shooting 46.1 percent from the floor. Under the boards they are pulling down an average of 39.2 rebounds a game.

                      Betting Trends

-- The Bulldogs are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six road games and they are 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 games following an ATS loss. The total has stayed UNDER in 11 of their last 16 games on the road.

-- The Wildcats are 6-7-1 ATS in 13 previous home games this season and the total has stayed UNDER in 15 of their 21 games overall. It has also stayed UNDER in 20 of its last 26 games played at home.

-- Head-to-head in this matchup, the home team has won six of the last seven meetings SU and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six games. Kentucky has a 4-1 edge ATS in the last five meetings.

                        Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Kentucky is the last unbeaten in college basketball; since 1985, the last unbeaten has won the national title twice: '99 UConn, '06 Florida.

-- Looks like Dick LeBeau will sign on with Tennessee as a defensive assistant and that is good news for Ken Whisenhunt and the Titans.

-- Maximum salary in the WNBA is $107,000; Diana Taurasi makes $1.5M over in Russia (seriously? wow!!!) and will skip the WNBA season this summer.

-- Texas G Javan Felix (concussion) won't play tonight when the Longhorns host Oklahoma State in a Big X revenge game in Austin.
The next series of numbers are from the fine football writer Bill Barnwell:

-- NFL teams dropped back to pass 112 times from the 1-yard line this year: 66 TDs (59.5% success rate), three sacks, one fateful interception.

-- NFL teams tried 223 running plays from the 1-yard line this year: 129 TDs, (57.8% success rate), two turnovers on fumbles.

                        **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                        13) Today is National Signing Day in college football; at 2:30, Cordell Broadus will announce his college choice-- he is Snoop Dogg's son. If the young man chooses to go to school at LSU (Odell Beckham Jr has to be helping LSU recruit WRs, right?), this would team Snoop Dogg and our man Les Miles as the unlikeliest of allies. Whoever is in charge of these things, please make this happen!!!!

                        12) ESPNU has 11 hours of coverage today, making this one of the few days of the entire year that I might be awake at 8am. Maybe.

                        11) The great Bill Raftery will team with Jim Nantz, Grant Hill in calling this year's Final Four. This is great news, because Raftery is awesome, but what a kick in the teeth to Clark Kellogg, the deposed #1 analyst who obviously isn't thought highly of by whomever is in charge. Haven't heard Hill enough yet to form an opinion. Seems like every single Duke alum is either a TV announcer or a head coach.

                        10) NBA All-Star break is longer this year; there are full schedules on Feb 11 and Feb 20, one game on the 12th and two on the 19th, so for 24 of the 30 teams, it is at least an eight-day break, almost twice as long as normal.

                        9) Unusual to see the Clippers' Jamal Crawford at the Celtic-Knick game; apparently the Clips stayed an extra night in NYC after losing to the Nets Monday- they play in Cleveland Thursday. Dangerous to let NBA players loose for an off-night in NYC, but Doc Rivers seems to do some things to make the season more enjoyable for his team. Not sure it helps them win more, but it probably makes them happier.

                        8) Crawford has curiously played for 17 head coaches in his 15-year career.

                        7) Syracuse 72, Virginia Tech 70-- ESPNU announcer, former Providence coach Tim Welsh was once a Syracuse assistant; when TV guys have neetings with coaches, do opposing coaches get paranoid about alliances between TV guys and the other team, like when the Redskins are on Monday Night Football and Jon Gruden's brother is coaching Washington? I know I would be.

Welsh spent a lot of the second half bitching about the refs, as Syracuse battled back from a double digit deficit, but he has taken up Jay Bilas' cause of scrutinizing the refs to the point of annoyance this season, not just in this game.

Virginia Tech gagged this game away, not getting a shot on their last two possessions in a game they led by 13 with 5:32 left.

                        6) Boise State 68, Utah State 63-- Broncos' first-ever win in Logan.

                        5) Browns' WR Josh Gordon caught 87 passes for 1,646 yards in 2013, but has had substance abuse issues and is now suspended for all of 2015, which is very sad. Young man should be having the time of his life, one of the best at his profession but he can't even play now. He shouldn't have to work a day in his life other than being a football player, but that seems unlikely now.

                        4) Why is Russell Wilson going to Texas Rangers' spring training? Whats the point? He is finally about to break the bank with the Seahawks and he feels the need to go play baseball? What if he blows his knee out? Then what? And why would Texas want him there? He is not that big a baseball prospect; he hit .229 in 93 minor league games in the Colorado system, in A ball.

                        3) The Caribbean Series is on TV, but it is on ESPN Desportes, which I don't have seeing as I....."no habla Espanol". These games should be on for everyone, even if we just see the games with graphics and no announcers- lot of people would watch. It is the dead of winter; baseball would be great to see, but what can you do?

                        2) Speaking of baseball on TV, SEC Network is going to have a lot of college baseball starting in a couple weeks, which is good news. Always weird to hear aluminum bats making contact with the ball on TV, but this is a good development.

                        1) Josh Hamilton is out 6-8 weeks after shoulder surgery; his signing hasn't gone well for the Angels- he's knocked in only 123 runs in 240 games with the Halos, after he knocked in 506 runs in 647 games with Texas.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

                          Lookahead spot

The San Antonio Spurs can’t help but look ahead to their upcoming “Rodeo Road Trip” which pushes the Spurs out of the AT&T Center for most of the month of February. San Antonio will be on the highway for a nine-game stretch that takes the Spurs all the way out East and then back West in a span of 20 days. However, while the Rodeo Trip would fall under our regular “Schedule Spot”, San Antonio’s inability to stay focused before the annual trip is an absolute lookahead.

Over the past three seasons, including 2015, the Spurs have suffered an ATS slump just before heading off on that extended away trek. In 2013, San Antonio went a perfect 6-0 SU but only 2-3-1 ATS. Last season, they flopped to a 1-3 SU mark and failed to cover in each of those games. And this year, the defending NBA champs are 3-2 SU and 0-4-1 ATS in their last five games, with Orlando coming to town Wednesday. San Antonio has one more home stand after that, hosting Miami Friday, before opening the Rodeo Trip in Toronto Sunday.

                          Letdown spot

The Wisconsin Badgers haven’t had much time to catch their collective breathes with the frantic pace of the Big Ten. The Badgers were on the road for two tough games – at Michigan and Iowa – last week and return home to face No. 25 Indiana Tuesday night. Wisconsin is just 3-5-1 ATS since the beginning of conference play and that once gigantic home-court edge in the Kohl Center is slipping, with a 1-3-1 ATS mark in their last four in Madison.

The Badgers will finally get a chance to relax – somewhat – against the Northwestern Wildcats this weekend. Northwestern sits at the bottom of the Big Ten, going just 1-7 SU in conference play so far. The Wildcats do, however, present some great value on the road, where they are perfect 6-0 ATS heading into Tuesday’s tilt in Nebraska. Northwestern was blown away by Wisconsin 81-58 at home on Jan. 4, so the Badgers could get caught putting their feet up with a large spread likely looming in Saturday’s game.

                          Schedule spot

The Anaheim Ducks are hopping the country for a five-game road trip, which opens in Nashville Thursday. The Ducks will be playing the first three stops of this trip in four nights, taking on the Predators, Washington Capitals (Friday), and Tampa Bay Lightning (Sunday) - three opponents that love to push the pace and keep goaltenders busy.

Nashville ranks third in shots on goal in the NHL (32 per game), while Washington boast the league’s third-best power play (23.5 percent), and Tampa Bay nets a league-high 3.2 goals a game. That’s a whole lot of offense to handle in that short span. After that, the Ducks finish up at Florida Tuesday and at Carolina Thursday – two teams on the other end of that offensive scale.
