    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- James Harden has scored 30+ points 21 times this season; no one else in NBA has done it more than thirteen times.

-- UAB shot 70.3% from floor in Saturday's OT win over Old Dominion; not often a team shoots 70%+ for a whole game.

-- Atlanta Hawks have now won 16 games in row and 30 of last 32.

-- Three of five starters for the Knicks Saturday are on 10-day contracts.

-- Duke 77, St John's 68-- Mike Krzyzewski won his 1,000th game; Blue Devils were down nine with 8:20 left.

-- Atlanta Falcons will reportedly name Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn their head coach as soon as the confetti stops falling after the Super Bowl.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

    13) Didn't watch Pro Bowl or the NHL All-Star Game; if you pick teams by having guys choose up sides, then its a farce and I'm not watching. There was good basketball on all day/night Sunday, plus the golf, so that was enough entertainment.

    12) Remember the beginning of the TV show MASH, when helicopters are coming over the mountain as they run the credits? That was filmed at the golf course where they played the Humana Challenge this weekend, in La Quinta.

    11) Notre Dame 81, NC State 78 OT-- This was an excellent game, with Wolfpack up 18 in first half, but Notre Dame has lot of guys hwo can score and they fought back and won this high-level game.

    10) Snoop Dawg's son Cordell Broadus is a 4-star football recruit from Las Vegas; ESPN has a reality show about father/son running on Wednesday/Sundays. First two episodes weren't bad. Young Broadus is 6-3, listed as the #27 receiver in this recruiting class by some recruiting service online. Curious to see where he winds up.

Not sure if I mentioned this last week, but the high school coach in this show is now the head coach at UNLV. Tony Sanchez, who has the backing of the two guys who run UFC- their kids go to Bishop Gorman HS, which has amazing facilities for a high school. I'm told their weight room is better than most Division I weight rooms.

    9) College football's Signing Day is February 4; Michigan has only eight signees, with Jim Harbaugh getting his first two this week, including a four-star quarterback from New Mexico who shunned Texas to play for the Wolverines.

    8) You figure that with the scholarship limit at 85 and most freshmen red-shirting, that makes 17 the average recruiting class, right? Michigan needs to change a few kids' minds in order to avoid this recruiting class being a hinderance to future success.

    7) Cal-Davis leads the country, making 43.9% of its 3-pointers; Central Michigan, Iona and Idaho are right behind them.

Nevada is last, making 23.2% of its 3-pointers.

    6) Ole Miss leads the country, making 80% of its foul shots; Illinois, BYU, Albany (my alma mater) are the next three teams in line.

Savannah State is last, making 56.8% from the charity stripe.

    5) Charleston is 1-7 in CAA with a new coach hired in September after the old coach was forced out for being verbally abusive. Cougars lost their last three games, all by exactly two points. Strange this is, Rick Barry's youngest son (he has a LOT of sons) is Charleston's best player and only a sophomore. Maybe Rick Barry should coach.

    4) Marcus Mariota apparently hurt his shoulder in the national title game when an Ohio State lineman landed on him late in the game; now he says he might not throw at the NFL Combine, because the shoulder isn't 100%.

Lot of rumors that the Eagles will trade up for Mariota so he can play for Chip Kelly again, so does throwing at the Combine really matter?

    3) Virginia 50, Virginia Tech 47- Cavaliers survived a comatose effort against an inferior opponent; their next three games: Duke-North Carolina-Louisville. They'll need to be a lot better in those games than they were Sunday.

    2) Miami Heat's Hassan Whitehead blocked 12 shots Sunday, making him the first NBA player to block 10+ shots in 25 or less minutes since Manute Bol in 1989.

    1) Maryland 68, Northwestern 67-- Wrong team won this game; Wildcats played better, even though they're obviously not the better team. Northwestern has now lost six games in a row, the last five all by 5 or less points or in OT- they're close.

Freshman Bryant McIntosh missed a huge foul shot in this game, but he is a keeper; if Chris Collins recruits a few more kids like him, Wildcats will get to the NCAAs for the first time ever in the very near future.

Top 25 roundup: Krzyzewski gets 1,000th win

            NEW YORK -- Coach K reached 1K.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski became the first Division 1 coach to win 1,000 games, guiding the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils to a 77-68 win over the St. John's Red Storm on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

"We were so gritty in the last 10 minutes," Krzyzewski said. "It was tough to get involved with 1,000. I was just trying to survive this game, which is how you get to 1,000."

In addition to the record number of wins, Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils (17-2) to four national championships, 13 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and 11 Final Fours. He also coached the U.S. Olympic Team to two gold medals.

Freshman guard Tyus Jones led the Blue Devils with 22 points and six assists. Center Jahlil Okafor, the nation's top-scoring freshman, added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Sir' Dominic Pointer topped St. John's (13-6) with 21 points and guard Rysheed Jordan added 18 points.

            Virginia 50, Virginia Tech 47

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Guard Justin Anderson sparked a late rally with eight points in a three-minute span in the second half, and the second-ranked Cavaliers escaped with a victory.

Anderson scored a team-high 12 points, most coming in the final six minutes. He also blocked Hokies guard Malik Muller's 3-pointer with 13 seconds left, helping preserve the Cavaliers' three-point lead.

The Cavaliers (19-0, 7-0 ACC) remained one of two unbeaten teams in Division I, joining Kentucky. But their 19th victory was much more difficult than anyone had imagined. The win wasn't secured until guard Adam Smith's deep 3-pointer at the buzzer spun in and out of the basket. Smith scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Hokies (8-11, 0-6).

            Ohio State 82, Indiana 70

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Guard D'Angelo Russell scored 22 points and handed out 10 assists, and forward Jae'Sean Tate added 20 points to lead the Buckeyes past the 23rd-ranked Hoosiers.

Russell hit nine of 15 shots from the field, had six rebounds and made key baskets or assists to keep Indiana at bay. Tate was right there with him. He connected on 9 of 10 from the field, shared the team lead in rebounds with six and scored key buckets in the final minutes to extend the lead for Ohio State (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten).

Point guard Yogi Farrell scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to pace Indiana (15-5, 5-2).

            Wichita State 74, Drake 40

WICHITA, Kan. -- With 11 minutes to play, Wichita State's lineup consisted of three freshmen, a junior transfer and a walk-on. That was one of many indications the 14th-ranked Shockers are rolling again through the Missouri Valley Conference, this time beating the overmatched Bulldogs.

The Shockers (18-2, 8-0 MVC) led all 40 minutes and never gave Drake (4-16, 1-7) any hope. Wichita State led 36-19 at halftime and buried the Bulldogs by shooting better than 60 percent most of the second half.

Junior guard Ron Baker led Wichita State with 15 points. Senior guard Tekele Cotton added 10.

            Butler 77, Seton Hall 57

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Bulldogs used a staggering 27-3, second-half run to beat the 24th-ranked Pirates for the second time in 12 days.

Butler (15-6, 5-3 Big East) trailed 37-34 when it began the game-deciding blitz that was capped by a layup from guard Roosevelt Jones, giving the Bulldogs a 61-40 lead with 8:09 remaining.

Center Andrew Chrabascz led the Bulldogs with 16 points, guard Kellen Dunham added 15, Jones scored 12 and point guard Alex Barlow had 11. Forward Brandon Mobley paced Seton Hall (13-6, 3-4) with 15 points.

            Louisville 80, Pittsburgh 68

PITTSBURGH -- Terry Rozier scored 26 points as the 10th-ranked Cardinals got back on track with an victory over the Panthers.

Rozier scored 18 points in the first half when Louisville shot a blazing 70.8 percent from the field in building a 40-30 halftime lead. The sophomore guard notched his fifth game with at least 20 points this season.

Junior forward Montezl Harrell scored 18 points, and senior guard Chris Jones added 17 points and nine assists for Louisville (15-4, 3-3 ACC), which had lost two of its previous three games. Sophomore forward Jamel Artis scored 18 points for Pitt (13-7, 3-4).

            Northern Iowa 54, Illinois 53

NORMAL, Ill. -- Down 12 in the second half, the 20th-ranked Panthers rallied for an improbable win. Reserve forward Nate Buss drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner with 5.2 seconds left for the decisive points.

Guard Daishon Knight had a chance to win it for Illinois State (12-8, 4-4 Missouri Valley Conference), but his driving layup under duress hit the front rim and bounced off as time expired.

Forward Seth Tuttle finished with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds for Northern Iowa (18-2, 7-1). The Panthers won their seventh consecutive game after opening conference play with a loss at Evansville. Reserve guard Bobby Hunter paced the Redbirds with 13 points, while center Reggie Lynch and guard Paris Lee each scored 12.

Notre Dame 81, North Carolina State 78 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Guard Jerian Grant scored 25 points, and the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish, who scurried to force overtime, topped the Wolfpack. Grant blocked a 3-point try by North Carolina State guard Trevor Lacey at the end.

Guard Demetrius Jackson and forwards Pat Connaughton and V.J. Beachem added 11 points apiece for Notre Dame (19-2, 7-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). Irish forward Zach Auguste had 10 points.

Lacey tallied 13 points to lead North Carolina State (13-8, 4-4). Forwards Kyle Washington and Caleb Martin had 12 points each, while guard Ralston Turner scored 11 and forward Cody Martin had 10.

            Villanova 71, Creighton 50

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- A 15-0 run to open the game set the tone as the fourth-ranked Wildcats led wire-to-wire for a victory over the Bluejays.

Villanova (18-2, 5-2 Big East) maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half, going up by as many as 24 while not allowing Creighton to get closer than a dozen points over the final 23 minutes. Senior guard Darrun Hilliard led Villanova with 24 points, including six 3-pointers, while junior point guard Ryan Arcidiacono added 10.

Creighton (9-12, 0-8 Big East) lost its ninth game in a row. Guard James Milliken topped the Bluejays with 13 points.

            Maryland 68, Northwestern 67

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Guard/forward Dez Wells made a put-back with 1.4 seconds left to give the 13th-ranked Terrapins a 68-67 win over the Wildcats.

Guard Melo Trimble had 19 of his 27 points in the second half for the Terrapins (18-3, 6-2 Big Ten). The Terrapins trailed by 11 points with 3:45 left.

The Wildcats (10-10, 1-6) took their sixth loss in a row. Guard Bryant McIntosh had 21 points to pace Northwestern, which also led by 11 points at halftime.

            Utah 77, Washington 56

SALT LAKE CITY -- Guard Dakarai Tucker scored a career-high 19 points, and guard Brandon Taylor added 14 to lift the 12th-ranked Utes to a win over the Huskies.

Tucker and Taylor combined to make eight 3-pointers, leading Utah (16-3, 6-1 Pac-12) to its 15th straight home victory dating to last season, who saw a three-game winning streak snapped. The Utes led from start to finish and shot 61.1 percent (11-for-18) on 3-point shots.

Guard Andrew Andrews had 19 points to lead Washington, which saw a three-game winning streak snapped. Center Robert Upshaw chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Huskies (14-5, 3-4).

Game of the Day: Syracuse at North Carolina
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Syracuse Orange at University of North Carolina Tar Heels (OFF, OFF)

Brice Johnson does not lead North Carolina in any major categories, but he just might be the team's most important player. Coming off back-to-back terrific outings, Johnson hopes to fuel the 15th-ranked Tar Heels past visiting Syracuse when the teams square off Monday. Johnson scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting against Wake Forest on Wednesday before recording 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting versus Florida State on Saturday, prompting rave reviews from leading scorer Marcus Paige.

“He played great. ... That’s the type of production - we’ll take that all day," Paige said. "He’s still coming along defensively. He’s better than he’s ever been. So he’s getting there, but his ceiling his so high, too, that we like to see him build on performances." The Tar Heels have won 10 of their last 11 games, while the Orange have dropped two of three following a seven-game winning streak. Both teams are dealing with injuries as Syracuse is without forward Chris McCullough (ACL) while North Carolina is without reserves Joel Berry (groin) and Theo Pinson (foot), not to mention Johnson playing through a back strain.

                        TV:
                        7 p.m. ET, ESPN

                        ABOUT SYRACUSE (14-6, 5-2 ACC):
Despite 23 points and eight rebounds from Rakeem Christmas, Syracuse dropped a 66-62 decision to Miami (Fla.) on Saturday as the team shot 8-of-19 from the foul line. "You can ask a million questions," coach Jim Boeheim said to reporters afterwards. "Overall, this game was one thing, that's it, nothing else. We make some free throws, we win the game, bottom line." The shorthanded Orange used only six players - four of which played all 40 minutes - including all three of their double-digit scorers on the season - Christmas (18.3), Trevor Cooney (14.1) and Michael Gbinije (10.7).

                        ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (16-4, 6-1):
The Tar Heels rank in the top five nationally in both rebounds and assists with J.P. Tokoto serving as a major factor in both categories. The junior forward averages 9.1 points, five rebounds and a team-high 4.1 assists, while four other North Carolina players average double figures in points, led by Paige's 13.8. Kennedy Meeks is second on the team in scoring (12.8) and tops in rebounding (8.3), although he only has surpassed eight rebounds once in his last six games.

                        TRENDS:

                        * The Orange are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall
                        * The Tar Heels are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall
                        * The Over is 4-1 in the Tar Heels' last five games
                        * The Over is 5-1-1 in the Orange's last seven after a SU loss

Timberwolves on fire ATS as double-digit dogs

Oddsmakers have set the Oklahoma City Thunder as healthy 15.5-point home favorites for their clash with the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves Monday, but recent history is showing the Wolves have been a fantastic bet as big underdogs.

In matchups when they find themselves listed as double-digit pups in the 2014-15 campaign, Minnesota has covered four straight and six of their last seven. The Thunder have been chalk of at least 10 points on six occassions this year but have only cashed twice in those matchups.

At the time of writing, the total for the contest was sitting at 206.

Nets, Knicks games postponed due to weather

Both New York-area NBA team's games will be postponed due to a massive blizzard expected in the region.

The New York Knicks were supposed to host the Sacramento Kings at Madison Square Garden, while the Brooklyn Nets were to host the Portland Trail Blazers at the Barclays Center.

There are no makeup dates scheduled so far.

Heat are the new hot under play

The Miami Heat have gone under the game total in 11 straight games and have become one of the Association's best under plays going 15-29 over/under this season.

The Heat made it 11 in a row with their 96-84 win over the Chicago Bulls Sunday afternoon by being a perfect combination of great defense and poor offense.

Miami is second in the NBA is opponents points per game at 96.2, while ranking 28th in scoring offense at just 92.9 ppg.

Miami hosts another under darling, the Milwaukee Bucks, on Wednesday. Look out for a very low total.

Hawks fail to cover for the first time in 16 games

The Atlanta Hawks cover streak finally came to an end last night failing to cover the 17.5-point they were favored by over the Minnesota Timberwolves, winning 112-100.

The 17.5-point spread was the most the Hawks have faced all season and it was just a little too much for them to overcome.

However, they did extended their straight up streak to 16 in a row and are still the NBA's best bet at 33-12 against the spread. They host Brooklyn this Thursday.

Cavs top Thunder for sixth win and cover in a row

Fresh off a 108-98 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder Sunday, the Cleveland Cavaliers appear to be hitting their stride are rewarding their backers in the process.

The win was Cleveland's sixth-straight and improved their overall record to 25-20. The Cavs have cashed spread tickets in each game during the aforementioned winning streak.

The wine and gold will aim to make it seven in a row Tuesday when they take on the Detroit Pistons in the Motor City.
