    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

College basketball conferences #19-24, according to kenpom.com

    24) Big South- Coastal Carolina/High Point are tied for first.

    23) Southern-- Mercer-Wofford-Chattanooga all have one loss.

    22) Patriot-- Colgate is in first; they're 8-12 overall. Not a good league.

    21) Summit-- North Dakota State/Oral Roberts are tied at the top.

    20) OVC-- Murray State-Eastern Illinois is Thursday; battle of unbeatens.

    19) MAAC-- Wide-open league; Iona-Rider-Monmouth tied for first.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) Radio talk shows are funny; the Packers blew a lead Sunday, so now every move they made during the game becomes the one that cost them the game. They should've done this, they should've done that. Every "Joe from Queens" knows better than the guy who makes $5M a year to coach the team. Amazing.

    12) Tom Selleck turns 70 years old next week. I read this Sunday night and it jarred me; I instantly felt older. He did an episode of Magnum PI called "Forty", all about hitting middle age. Hard to believe that was thirty years ago.

    11) Milwaukee traded pitcher Yovani Gallardo to Texas, fueling speculation they are going to sign free agent James Shields.

    10) Kansas 85, Oklahoma 78-- Jayhawks led by 19 at half, Oklahoma went ahead late in game, but couldn't finish the job. Really good game. Oklahoma is one of those teams that could lose in the first round of the NCAAs but they could win a title, too.

    9) 49ers are paying new coach Jim Tomsula $3.5M a year, less than four coaches in the Big 14, where Jim Harbaugh ($5M a year) now works. Niners are a top 5 team in revenue, but Tomsula is the 3rd-lowest paid head coach- this makes sense how?

    8) Some of these nitwit owners might've read Moneyball; Billy Beane isn't a big believer in managers being paid huge money, he sees them more as middle managers. In the NFL though thats just not true at all. 49ers will learn that the hard way.

    7) Clippers are 28-14; Knicks are 6-36. Mike Woodson is an assistant coach in LA now, after being run out of NY last year. Think he is happier now?

    6) Max Scherzer's $210M contract will be paid out over 14 years, even though it is only a seven-year contract. Washington is a prohibitive favorite in the NL East.

    5) Forgot to mention this, but over the weekend, South Dakota lost by 14 at South Dakota State as an 8-point underdog, but only before they took a 20-0 lead!!! How many times does a team fall behind 20-0, then rally to win by double figures?

    4) I screwed up a stat yesterday about #1 seeds making the Super Bowl. Here is the right stuff: this is the third time in the last six years that both #1 seeds made it to the Super Bowl. Before the Saints-Colts Super Bowl, it had been 16 years since both #1's got to the Super Bowl.

    3) Bleachers in Wrigley Field will be closed in April; ones in right field might not be open until Memorial Day, as they refurbish the ballpark. Going to be strange to see games in April with no fans in the outfield.

    2) Lou Amundson started for the Knicks Monday; he is on his 10th NBA team in nine seasons. Amundson and Drew Gooden are the two active players who have both been on ten different teams. The record is 12 teams; Amundson has a shot.

    1) Four different players have played for 12 NBA teams: Tony Massenberg, Chuckie Brown, Joe Smith and Jim Jackson. Smith and Jackson were high draft picks.

Super Bowl line watch: What happened to the 2.5 points?

Like Yogi Berra was purported to have said: When you come to the fork in the road, take it.

Super Bowl betting season is over, and for the first time in history of SB betting lines, there is no money line. All bettors need to do is pick the winner in this one, because oddsmakers have determined that, for now anyway, no one will get or give points when the teams kick off in Arizona in about two weeks.

The big question is what happened to 2.5 points.

Before the AFC and NFC championship games were played on Sunday, there was word that a Green Bay-New England Super Bowl would be a pick ‘em, but if the matchup was Seahawks-Patriots, then Seattle would be laying out 2.5 to New England backers.

That all apparently changed on Sunday, when the Seahawks -- who had been kicking hiney and taking names down the stretch and into the playoffs – for some reason looked very beatable for more than three periods at home against the Packers.

GB’s eventual choke which opened to the door for Seattle to get to the Super Bowl a second straight season perhaps gave oddsmakers pause. And while offshores and Vegas books were still digesting the impact of Seattle’s near-death experience in the rain in the Northwest, the Patriots further muddied the waters by putting the hammer to the Colts in also-sopping Foxboro.

The Pats were no longer the Pats who rose from the ashes against the Ravens the week before when they had to perform their own Great Escape. They were the 2007 Belichick-Brady Patriots who took no prisoners.

What were oddsmakers to do? The Seattle-is-a-bit-better narrative had been crushed in a six-hour Sunday time frame, and if a 2.5-point line had been survived NE’s 45-7 win, there would have been riots in the streets of Vegas as bettors flocked to books to grab the points.

That would have mandated a quick line adjustment as books tried to limit overexposure. Best to bite the bullet quickly, so the result was a split-the-baby line in which no one gets or gives.

      Somewhere Yogi is smiling.

Top 25 roundup: Coach K earns win No. 999

DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman guard Tyus Jones matched his season high with 22 points as fifth-ranked Duke drubbed Pittsburgh 79-65 Monday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, giving coach Mike Krzyzewski his 999th career coaching victory.

Krzyzewski's first chance at reaching the 1,000-win mark comes Sunday afternoon against St. John's at New York's Madison Square Garden. That is the same venue where he passed Bob Knight as the all-time winningest Division I men's coach on Nov. 15, 2011, picking up No. 903 against Michigan State.

Center Jahlil Okafor scored 14 points, guard Rasheed Sulaimon had 13 and guard Quinn Cook added 11 for Duke (16-2, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Blue Devils have won two games by double-digit margins since back-to-back losses threatened to alter the course of their season.

Sophomore forward Jamel Artis poured in a career-high 21 points for Pittsburgh (13-6, 3-3). Guard Chris Jones had 13 points and forward Michael Young added 11 points for the Panthers.

              Georgetown 78, Villanova 58

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman forward Isaac Copeland came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points and senior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera also had 17 points as Georgetown's pressure defense was too much for No. 4 Villanova in a convincing Big East upset.

The Hoyas (13-5, 5-2 Big East) built a 22-point lead at halftime after forcing the Wildcats (17-2, 4-2) into 10 first-half turnovers.

Villanova, which won their first 13 games of the season, was paced by guard Ryan Arcidiacono with 16 points.

              Kansas 85, Oklahoma 78

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The 11th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks built a 20-point lead in the first half, then fell behind in the second half before making a final surge to beat 19th-ranked Oklahoma at Allen Fieldhouse.

Sophomore guard Brannen Greene canned a 3-pointer with 3:20 remaining as part of a 16-9 run the Jayhawks (15-3, 4-1 Big 12) used to end the game.

Kansas led 39-19 midway through the first half, but the Sooners (12-6, 3-3) led by as many as four on a three-point play by junior guard Buddy Hield with 4:56 left in the second half.

Hield finished with a game-high 26 points, but the Jayhawks' late charge enabled Kansas to win its 18th straight at home.

              Texas 66, TCU 48

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The 17th-ranked Longhorns refused to give the Horned Frogs a foothold as both scrapped for traction in the Big 12 race. Texas already had a 10-point lead when it reeled off a 14-0 run in the second half to secure a victory at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

The Horned Frogs (14-4, 1-4) were coming off their first victory in two seasons in Big 12 play, but Texas stiff-armed TCU's effort to make it back-to-back wins. The Longhorns (14-4, 3-2) established a 10-point lead midway through the first half and smothered the Horned Frogs on the defensive end.

Texas blocked nine shots and held TCU to 33-percent shooting from the field. Guard Javan Felix paced the Longhorns with 15 points. Forward Kenrich Williams topped the Horned Frogs with 10 points.

Game of the Day: Thunder at Heat
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (OFF, OFF)

The Oklahoma City Thunder can move above .500 for the first time all season when they travel to Miami to face the Heat on Tuesday. The Thunder started 3-12 while stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were battling injuries, but they've won two straight and seven of 11 to complete their climb out of the early hole. The Heat haven't seen .500 since the first week of December, but they've won three of four to maintain the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Thunder still have work to do to get back in the playoff picture — they're three games behind eighth-place Phoenix — but started a tough five-game road trip with an impressive 127-99 win at Orlando on Sunday. "We were clicking on all cylinders this time," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks told reporters. "We haven't played well in our last three road games, but we came out with a road-trip mentality." Miami has won seven of the past eight meetings, including the 2012 NBA Finals, and the teams split two contests last season.
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBA TV, FSN Oklahoma (Oklahoma City), Sun Sports (Miami)

                  ABOUT THE THUNDER (19-20):
Oklahoma City has hit its stride offensively, scoring 127 points in each of the past two games and averaging 106.6 while winning 17 of its last 25. Durant (25.4 points, 6.9 rebounds) has scored 21 or more points in seven of eight games since returning from his most recent injury, averaging 28.6 points and nine rebounds over that stretch. Newcomer Dion Waiters has provided a spark off the bench since coming over from Cleveland, scoring 15 or more points in his last four games.

                  ABOUT THE HEAT (18-22):
Miami wrapped up a five-game West Coast road trip with a 95-83 win at Sacramento on Friday, finishing 3-2 on the trek despite playing the last two games without leading scorer Dwyane Wade (22.1 points, 5.6 assists). Chris Bosh (21.6 points, 7.7 rebounds) and Luol Deng (14.2 points, 4.9 rebounds) put up big numbers against the Kings, but while Wade (hamstring) could return Tuesday, Deng (illness) is questionable. The Heat clamped down on defense on the trip, allowing 90 points or fewer in all three of their wins.

                  TRENDS:

                  * The Under is 7-0 in the Heat's last seven games
                  * The Thunder are 1-7 ATS in their last eight meetings
                  * The Thunder are 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine outings
                  * The Heat are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four games

                  NBA

                  Tuesday, January 20

Under a red hot bet in the Association Monday night

Betting on the under in the NBA was a smart move on Monday night as it went an impressive 10-1 over/under, cashing over 90 percent of the time.

This was highlighted by the Milwaukee Bucks, who have gone under in 11 straight games.

The under has been the slightly better bet compared to the over this season, hitting 52.9 percent of the time.

Hawks continue to roll, win, cash 13th straight

The Atlanta Hawks' streak is getting so ridiculous that you almost automatically have to back them until they lose.

The Hawks won and cashed their 13th consecutive game, beating the Detroit Pistons 92-83 Monday afternoon, covering the 7.5-point spread.

Atlanta, who is now the 5/1 to favorite to win the NBA title, has won 27 of their last 29 straight up and are 25-4 ATS during that run.

Next up for the Hawks is the Indiana Pacers in Atlanta on Wednesday, who have lost six of seven straight up and haven't covered in seven straight.

Knicks end skid at 16, cover the spread

The New York Knicks' losing streak has been halted at 16 thanks to a 99-92 win over the New Orleans Pelicans Monday night, where they easily covered as 7.5-point home dogs.

The Knicks covered the spread just four times during the 16 game losing streak, a skid that has seen them become the worst bet against the spread in the NBA at 14-27-1 ATS.

New York goes will try for back-to-back wins since winning their second an third games of the season when they visit Philadelphia Wednesday.

Bucks under streak hitting new lows

The Milwaukee Bucks lost 92-89 to the Toronto Raptors Monday night and went under the total for the 12th consecutive game.

The run has made the Bucks the second best under play in the Association at 15-26 over/under this season.

It should be noted that Milwaukee is 2-14 O/U since losing rookie phenom Jabari Parker to an ACL tear back on Dec. 16.

The Bucks will try to make it 13 in a row Thursday when they host the Utah Jazz.

                        Tuesday, January 20

Heat's seven-straight unders due to offensive woes

The Miami Heat have gone under the closing total in seven consecutive games. The under cashing has been thanks, in large, to a Heat offense that has only been averaging 88 points per game over that seven game span.

Miami will host the Oklahoma City Thunder Tuesday, with a total of 199 as of this writing.

Heat G Dwyane Wade, questionable Tuesday

Wade missed the last game due to a left hamstring strain and is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Thunder.
