    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Georgia Southern 78, UL-Lafayette 70-- Teams are now tied atop Sun Belt.

-- Murray State 92, Belmont 77-- Steve Prohm is 89-27 at Murray State; how is he still coaching there and not at a wealthier school?

-- Utah 76, Arizona State 59-- Big game Saturday; Utes at Arizona.

-- Eastern Washington 92, Portland State 85-- Eagles are 4-0 in Big Sky.

-- Washington State 108, Oregon 99 OT-- Ernie Kent beats his alma mater, has his Coogs 3-1 in Pac-12. Much improved team.

-- Gonzaga 78, Pepperdine 76-- Waves are on their way back- this was good game, but Bulldogs were an awful 14-33 on foul line. 14 for 33. Oy.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

    13) Good high school basketball event in Springfield, MA this weekend; 14 games with teams from all over the country. Games Monday will all be on ESPNU. Who is paying the freight for all these teams to fly to Massachusetts? It ain't cheap.

    12) Washington Redskins hired Bill Callahan as offensive line coach; he had the title of offensive coordinator in Dallas, but thats all it was obviously, a title. Callahan is a good get for Jay Gruden and the Redskins.

    11) Two of Rex Ryan's new assistants in Buffalo have famous names; Tony Sparano Jr and Bobby April III, sons of longtime NFL coaches. Don't forget, Rex Ryan is the son of a longtime NFL coach too.

    10) 2016 All-Star Game is in San Diego, giving NL the mid-summer classic two years in a row, which is unusual. Going to San Diego is always good, but the HR Derby in Petco Park won't be great-- too big. HR Derby in Cincinnati this July will be very good. Smaller parks make for better home run derbies.

    9) A's general manager Billy Beane has made nine trades with nine different teams since Thanksgiving weekend; when Oakland takes the field April 6, only two of their nine hitters will be guys who were on the A's last season.

    8) Gonzaga's basketball game at Pepperdine was delayed for 33 minutes after the Zags' team bus got stuck in freeway traffic and got to the gym only 25 minutes before the scheduled gametime. Gonzaga was 14-33 from the foul line in this game; I'm sure they are just glad to get out with a win and get ready for LMU Saturday.

    7) How long will Gonzaga big guy Domantas Sabonis stay in Spokane? He is highly skilled, the son of a great player. Young Sabonis will be a high draft pick whenever he decides to go pro. American big kids generally leave school too early-- is there anyone who remembers the Bradley kid, Patrick O'Bryant? He got the Braves to the Sweet 16, went pro and then his career withered and died. That happens too much.

    6) Gonzaga was 14 for 33 on foul line last night; Duquesne was 13-34 in a 78-69 loss at Saint Louis Wednesday; how does a team full of kids on basketball scholarships do so poorly on the foul line? I am 55 years old sitting here in sweats watching CSI reruns and I could drive to a gym in ten minutes and make half my foul shots. Oy.

    5) North Carolina's last three games were decided by a total of four points; Tar Heels are a good team but a weird one, they're thin in the backcourt in an era when guards are dominating the game. Marcus Paige might be the MVP of college hoop this year.

    4) I love my IPhone6, but the whole autocorrect thing bothers me; I'd rather fix my own mistakes than have the phone invent words for me. .

    3) May 23 the White Sox will retire Paul Konerko's number 14.

    2) Ohio State QB Cardale Jones will stay at Ohio State, which makes sense; he has made three starts in college, no way is he ready for the NFL. Matt Cassel is the one guy who got drafted into the NFL without ever starting a college game-- he backed up Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC, but he is an unusual case.

    1) I saw Austin Rivers play AAU ball in Florida the summer before his 10th grade year; he played for team sponsored by Amare Stoudamire (Team STAT). Doc Rivers sat in first row at half court at Poinciana HS that day and gave advice quietly when he could-- now he'll get paid to give his son advice, as the Clippers traded for his son.

They will be the first father/son coach/player combo in NBA history.

              Friday, January 16

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAB small conferences

Team to watch: Saint Mary’s Gaels

Upcoming: vs. San Diego Thursday, vs. BYU Saturday

Senior center Brad Waldow may be undersized (6-foot-9) for his position, but he has used his 260-pound frame to take his game to new heights for Saint Mary’s (13-3, 5-0 West Coast) this season. Waldow is putting up 20.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game having never previously averaged more than 15.1 and 7.5. He has 11 double-doubles, including eight in his last 10 outings.

San Diego (9-9, 2-4 WCC) has not yet reached the 60-point mark after six conference games. That’s not a good recipe going up against a St. Mary’s squad that boasts the No. 1 scoring defense in the WCC. The Gaels are 10-3-1 ATS this season and 5-0 ATS in their last five overall dating back to Dec. 27. San Diego is a modest 7-8 ATS. BYU, Saint Mary’s Saturday opponent, is 6-11 ATS.

Team to beware: Georgia State Panthers

Upcoming: vs. Texas-Arlington Thursday, at Appalachian State Saturday, at Arkansas State next Monday

              What’s up with Georgia State?

Rod Hunter’s squad was one of the scariest mid-majors out there last season and the head coach brought just about everyone back, including his son R.J. But the Panthers (10-6, 3-2 Sun Belt) have struggled out of the gates in 2014-15.

The younger Hunter is averaging a career-best 21.1 ppg as a junior, but he’s doing it with more minutes and more shots. His 40.9 field-goal percentage is his worst ever and his 30.9 3-point percentage (42 of 136) is by far his lowest in three seasons. Georgia State is eighth in the conference in rebounding margin and 10th (second to last) in 3-point defense.

The Panthers are 4-11 ATS overall. They pay visits to Appalachian State Saturday and Arkansas State Monday (their third game five days) and are 0-7 ATS on the road.

              Total team: Wofford Terriers

Upcoming: at The Citadel Thursday, vs. Western Carolina Saturday

Wofford head coach Mike Young, perhaps best known recently as the guy who kept voting Duke ahead of Kentucky, generally likes to play an up-tempo style. That’s part of the reason why the Terriers score plenty (three times over the 80-point mark and at least 68 points in all four of their Southern Conference games). Four Terriers are shooting better than 39 percent from beyond the arc and all four of those players have drained at least 18 threes in 2014-15.

The Citadel (9-7, 2-3 Southern) is off to its best start under fifth-year head coach Chuck Driesell. A big reason for that is an ability to get to the free-throw line. The Bulldogs are first in the conference at 74.8 percent and they are 81 for 99 (81.8 percent) in their past five outings.

The Over is 7-1 in games involving Wofford this season. The Citadel has gone Over the total four times in four games.

Game of the Day: Cavaliers at Clippers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Los Angeles Clippers (-8, 207.5)

LeBron James excelled in his second game back from injuries and now gets to see how his body reacts to a back-to-back as the Cleveland Cavaliers visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. James missed eight games with back and knee injuries but dominated the Lakers with 36 points Thursday as Cleveland snapped a six-game losing streak. The Clippers recorded an impressive 100-94 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday behind 25 points from Jamal Crawford.

Despite a solid record, the Clippers have experienced consistency issues as they near the midway point. “We’ve been so up and down and inconsistent I don’t remember much,” point guard Chris Paul told reporters. “It seems like it’s been so much going on, we’re just trying to pile up wins. I don’t even know what our record is. I think right now I’m just more focused on how we’re playing.” The Cavaliers have won just two of their last 10 games and the victory over the Lakers got them back to the .500 mark.

LINE HISTORY: The line opened at LAC -8, with a total of 207.5.

                      INJURY REPORT:
                      Cavaliers - G Iman Shumpert (Out-Shoulder) Clippers - N/A

                      ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (20-20 SU, 14-26 ATS, 13-26-1 O/U):
While James was scoring at will against the Lakers, point guard Kyrie Irving was back on his game with 22 points. Irving has scored 20 or more points in nine of his last 11 games but he struggled to nine points on 4-of-14 shooting in Tuesday’s loss against Phoenix before making 9-of-16 from the field against Los Angeles. Shooting guard J.R. Smith scored 14 points against the Lakers in his fifth game since being acquired and he has made 14 3-pointers – eight coming in one game against the Suns.

                      ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (26-13 SU, 17-22 ATS, 17-19-3 O/U):
Doc Rivers will be coaching his son after Los Angeles acquired guard Austin Rivers from the Boston Celtics in a three-team trade that saw the Clippers send guard Reggie Bullock to the Phoenix Suns and swingman Chris Douglas-Roberts to the Celtics. Rivers was traded earlier this week from the New Orleans Pelicans to Boston and was reportedly told by the Celtics not to report. Rivers was unable to crack into the New Orleans starting lineup and the Clippers have an even stronger backcourt with starters Paul and J.J. Redick and an elite scorer off the bench in Crawford.

                      TRENDS:

*Cavaliers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 0 days rest.
*Under is 8-2 in Clippers last 10 overall.
*Underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
*Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

                      CONSENSUS:
51.54 of users are backing the Clippers -8, with 54.4 percent on the over.

Bucks defense clicking, now 11-straight unders

The Milwaukee Bucks defense has been stellar all-season long, ranking fourth in the association, but they have been even better as of late. Milwaukee's defensive acumen has pushed them to cash-in on the under for 11 consecutive games.

The Bucks are allowing a ridiculously low 86.7 points per game during their torrid under streak, which is 9.8 points less than the Portland Trail Blazers league-best defense has been allowing this season.

Only one team, the high-octane Phoenix Suns, have scored triple-digits against the Bucks in their last 11. Comparably, six of the Bucks past 11 opponents have been held to 85 points or fewer.

Offensively, the Bucks have have not been lighting up the scoreboard with a run-of-the-mill 95.5 point average.

Milwaukee's next game comes against the Toronto Raptors on Monday.
