    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Westgate casino's odds to win the Super Bowl.........

30-1-- Carolina-- Double digit underdogs in Seattle Saturday.

18-1-- Colts-- Will see an old friend in Denver Sunday.

18-1-- Ravens-- Best longshot on the board, no?

9-1-- Cowboys-- 8-0 road team visiting an 8-0 home team.

6-1-- Broncos-- John Fox got to a Super Bowl with Jake Delhomme at QB.

5-1-- Packers-- Rodgers has 25 TD passes, no INTs at home.

5-2-- Patriots-- Raven DC Pees used to work for New England.

9-5-- Seahawks-- Champs have played slugfests recently with Carolina.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) First of all, best wishes to Carolina Panthers' coach Ron Rivera and his family after part of his house caught fire late Sunday night; all six people in the house got out safely. Weird month for the Panthers, with Cam Newton rolling his car over a few weeks ago and now this. Both situations could've wound up much worse.

    12) Heard an interesting story today from someone who was there: 20 years ago, Western Kentucky's football team was coached by Jack Harbaugh; you have probably heard of his sons. WKU was debating shutting down the football program, the way UAB's program just got shut down, but a celebrity stepped in to help the team out.

Doc Severinsen is one of the greatest trumpet players ever; back then, he was best known as the bandleader on the Tonight Show. He called an attorney working to keep the football team and volunteered to help their cause, which he did.

At one point, the attorney asked Severinsen why he was helping the team out, and he got an interesting answer: "I'm not interested in football, but if your team goes, the marching band goes with it." The man went out of his way to make sure those young musicians had a band to play in, which was a very cool thing to do.

    11) Doc Severinsen is now 87, still alive and playing music; his website says he has two appearances in Virginia in mid-February. Western Kentucky won a bowl game this year, a game the the bandleader helped them win by his actions 20 years ago.

    10) Hawks 107, Clippers 98-- Atlanta is 26-8 and atop the East; Mike Budenholzer is their coach, a former Spurs' aide who is winning the same way San Antonio does, with teamwork. But for whatever reason, their owner is selling the team; go figure.

Hawks are 19-2 in their last 21 games, with seven straight road wins.

    9) Notre Dame 71, North Carolina 70-- Irish play fast, are fun to watch; they made 10-23 from arc in this game. Always good to have kids who can shoot. Curious that North Carolina doesn't have better shooters.

    8) New Mexico point guard Cullen Neal, son of coach Craig Neal, will redshirt this year since his badly sprained ankle still hasn't totally recovered. Big blow for this year's Lobos, but three years from now when Neal is a 5th-year senior, they're going to be very glad this happened.

    7) Cowboy-Lion game Sunday was highest rated TV show of any kind since the Oscars last March, and second-highest rated Wild Card game of all-time. .

    6) Any team that hires Josh McDaniels as its head coach deserves to be mocked; the guy drafted Tim Tebow in the first round. His main claim to fame is that he knows Tom Brady. How many people has Brady made rich by his great play?

Charlie Weis should be sending Brady monthly checks for all the money he has been paid since he left the Patriots and was exposed as a fraud, and he's not the only one.

    5) Mike Krzyzewski is going to win his 1,000th game this month; odd that he has not won ACC Coach of the Year since 2000. Right now, win #1,000 would be on the 17th against Louisville, but they play Miami right before then, so it could be delayed.

    4) American League starting pitchers had a 3.92 ERA last year, first time they were under 4.00 since 1981, Lot of water under the bridge since then.

    3) St John's gets Rysheed Jordan back for their game with Villanova tonight; party line was that Jordan's grandmother died over the weekend, which is why he missed the Butler game, but why didn't they just say that over the weekend?

    2) Question of the Day: Do colleges recruit cheerleaders?

Think about it; they're on TV alot, and you can't tell me Oregon's cheerleaders don't help their recruiting at least a little. USC's, too. How are these teams of agile, cheerful women formed? If you any insight into this issue, please let me know.

    1) This won't comfort Lion fans any, but in the CFL last summer, pass interference was a reviewable call, subject to being challenged. Could it happen in the NFL?

NFL line watch: Cowboys backers keep an eye on Wisconsin weather

      Spread to bet on now

Baltimore Ravens at New England Patriots (-7)

“Front of the line bettors” are on Baltimore in this one, but it appears they may be shooting at shadows. Yes, the Ravens looked good in taking care of the Steelers in Pittsburgh. And yes, Baltimore has had recent success against the Patriots in Foxboro. And yes, the Patriots lost their last regular-season game. But like a spin of the roulette wheel, this is an independent trial.

New England has been in dry dock for a week and has had time to handle some needed repairs to its offensive line, which was a bit shoddy over the final month. And when the Pats played Baltimore over the last few years, New England was crippled by injuries to Wes Welker or Rob Gronkowski. This time Gronk is ready to go. Whoever you like in this one, books probably won’t budge off seven.

      Spread to wait on

Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers (-6.5)

These aren’t the Dallas Cowboys football bettors have been accustomed. The old Boys would have figured out a way to throw away a playoff spot with poor play in December, or Tony Romo would have done something – anything – to turn a win into a loss. But now Dallas takes a five-game winning streak into Green Bay on Sunday, and Cowboy backers will be able to get nearly a full touchdown in what figures to be a grind-it-out taffy pull.

Temperatures in Green Bay are expected to moderate a bit by Sunday, but it’s possible that the game will finish in single digits, which could be a shock to the Cowboys. Not “Ice Bowl II” stuff, but still nasty enough. Early money is on Green Bay, but Dallas money may flood in late and move the line. Hang on a bit here and check out the variables later in the week.

      Total to watch

Carolina Panthers at Seattle Seahawks (40.5)

Plenty to offer here for both Over and Under aficionados. Under players can make an argument that Seattle’s defense is every bit as good now as it was at this time last season, and that Carolina can easily hang with the Seahawks because the Panthers haven’t given up more than 17 points in a game in more than a month.

But some Over players will jump at anything under 41 points (24-17) and figure all that’s needed is a couple of well-placed pass interference call to make dust of the Under. Either way, it’s hard to see the books adding a half-point to the scale.

Recent NFL history says Panthers are most dangerous team this postseason

The Carolina Panthers are the biggest underdogs on the board, set at +10.5 heading to Seattle for their NFL Divisional Round matchup this Saturday. The Panthers could also be the most dangerous team in football – if recent history has any say.

Carolina, at 7-8-1 in the regular season, joins the recent list of single-digit-win teams to tear it up in the playoffs. The Panthers’ 27-16 wild card victory over the Arizona Cardinals as 5.5-point favorites Saturday improved teams with single-digit wins in the regular season to 20-7 ATS in playoff games since 2008.

Carolina squeezed into the postseason with a one-sided win at Atlanta in Week 17, finishing atop the NFC South and earning an automatic postseason berth – just the second team in NFL history to make the playoffs with a sub-.500 finish to the regular season.

“The market has had a lot to do with it in the past, as lines have been overinflated going against these single-win teams,” says Covers Expert Matt Fargo, who cashed in on Carolina Saturday.

Last year, single-digit win teams were a perfect 3-0 ATS in the playoff. The Green Bay Packers (8-7-1 SU) just covered as 3.5-point underdogs in a 23-20 Wild Card loss to the San Francisco 49ers, and the San Diego Chargers (9-7 SU) knocked off the Cincinnati Bengals 27-10 as 6.5-point pups in the Wild Card Round and covered in a 24-17 loss to the Denver Broncos as 8-point underdogs in the AFC Divisional Round.

The two most prominent single-win postseason teams in that seven-year span have been the New York Giants, who finished 9-7 in 2011 and rolled to a Super Bowl XLVI title on perfect 4-0 SU and ATS postseason record, and Arizona Cardinals, who went 9-7 in 2008 and finished 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS eventually losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-23 as 6.5-point underdogs in Super Bowl XLIII.

“I don't think there's any question it’s a result of the overreaction to regular season results,” says Covers Expert Sean Murphy, who also won big on the Panthers this past weekend. “Outside of that, I'm not sure there's any particular reason why single-digit win teams cover at such a high rate. When the playoffs kick off the slate is always wiped clean and that gives a lot of confidence to underdogs with an 'us against the world' mentality.”

As for the Panthers’ chances against the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks, the opening odds had Carolina as high as +11.5 and have since been bet down as low as +10.5. Seattle has won four in a row in this series, covering the spread in three of those games. The lone blemish came this season, with the Panthers covering as 6-point home underdogs in a 13-9 loss to the Seahawks in Week 8.

“The Panthers defense came into the postseason playing awesome and they had outgained six straight opponents, make that seven now,” says Fargo. “This week, though, we are seeing the typical single-win team getting a lot of points and the market is driving this number based on the poor Carolina record going up against the defending Super Bowl Champions.”

For those not wanting to deal with so many points, there could be value on the Panthers to win outright at CenturyLink Field Saturday. Teams with single-digit wins in the regular season are an impressive 17-10 SU since 2008.

Carolina is currently a +475 outright underdog. Just sayin’.

Game of the Day: Villanova at St. John's
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Villanova Wildcats at St. John's Red Storm (+4)

When No. 5 Villanova visits No. 17 St. John's on Tuesday, the Wildcats will try to do something that the Red Storm were unable to do recently - bounce back from a loss to Seton Hall. Villanova suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, dropping a 66-61 overtime decision despite Daniel Ochefu's career highs of 19 points and 24 rebounds. St. John's, meanwhile, fell to the Pirates on New Year's Eve before absorbing a 73-69 home loss to Butler three days later.

The Red Storm played against Butler without point guard Rysheed Jordan, who is taking some time away from the team to handle a personal matter. "I thought our team fought hard under tough circumstances," St. John's coach Steve Lavin told reporters. "Now we have to get ready for Villanova. There is no time to wallow in self pity. You just have to get ready for the next game and try to get your mind set and calibrated to better move forward." The Wildcats should pose a stern test with a defense that has allowed more than 70 points only once all season - and that was in an overtime win against Syracuse.

                  TV:
                  9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

                  LINE HISTORY:
The line opened at Villanova -4 late Monday, which is where it currently sits.

                  INJURY REPORT:
SJ: Jordan, Rysheed probable (personal), Delarosa, Adonis (out for season). VILL: None.

                  POWER RANKINGS:
                  Villanova (-15) + St. John's (-11.4) + home court (-3.0) = Villanova -0.6

                  ABOUT VILLANOVA (13-1 SU, 1-1 Big East, 9-4 ATS, 4-9 O/U):
Villanova coach Jay Wright was particularly pleased Saturday with the play of Ochefu, who is averaging 10.1 points and 8.7 rebounds - up from 5.7 and 6.1, respectively, a season ago. "In a game like that, where they have young inside players, he's got to be effective for us - and he was," Wright said. "It was a (heck) of a game. Daniel also did a really good job of protecting the basket." The Wildcats' other primary big man, JayVaughn Pinkston, continues to endure a tough senior season as he shot 1-of-7 against Seton Hall and is shooting 41 percent from the field, compared to 52.1 percent a season ago.

                  ABOUT ST. JOHN'S (11-3 SU, 0-2, 6-4-1 ATS, 3-7-1 O/U):
The Red Storm were 8-0 when leading at halftime before squandering a four-point lead at intermission against the Bulldogs, who torched St. John's with 7-of-12 shooting from behind the arc. D'Angelo Harrison scored 31 points against Butler to raise his team-leading average to 20.3 points to go with 6.2 rebounds per game. Chris Obekpa anchors the Red Storm defense with 3.9 blocks - a figure that puts him second in the country - while Sir'Dominic Pointer ranks in the top 20 nationally with 2.4 steals per contest.

                  TRENDS:
