          NBA

          Wednesday, December 3

Bulls' C Joakim Noah, questionable Wednesday

Noah suffered a leg injury during Tuesday's game and is questionable to play Wednesday against the Hornets.

Road teams productive ATS on Tuesday's board

The visiting team posted a record of 7-3 against the spread in Tuesday's 10-game schedule in the NBA. Furthermore, the away underdog went 5-1 with the Indiana Pacers as the only home underdog to not cover. The Phoenix Suns defeated them 116-99 as 5-point home faves.

Season to date, road teams are 142-115-5 ATS (55.25 percent) and visiting underdogs have posted a record of 92-80-4 ATS (53.49 percent).

There is another 10 games on the board Wednesday, but four of those are off the board.

Clippers turning season around for backers

The Los Angeles Clippers began the season as the worst bet in the entire league, but bettors are rejoicing as Chris Paul and Co. have begun to turn things around.

The Clippers started with a seven-game losing skid at the betting window (4-3 straight up), but are 7-3 against the spread since then.

Clipper backers are currently enjoying a three-game winning streak at the betting window, but have their work cut out for them Wednesday evening. Oddsmakers have the Clips as 14.5-point favorites with the Orlando Magic in town.

            Wednesday's Tip Sheet

            December 3, 2014

Lakers at Wizards – 7:05 PM EST

Look out, NBA, the Lakers are making a comeback. Los Angeles won its second in a row last night with a 106-96 victory at Detroit as two-point underdogs, as six Lakers scored in double-figures. Byron Scott’s team has suddenly won three of its past four games away from Staples Center, while owning a 5-1 ATS record in its previous six road contests. The Lakers have won just once in four tries with no rest this season, but have covered twice, including winning outright at Houston on November 19 as 11 ½-point underdogs.

The Wizards blew out the unrested Heat on Monday night, 107-86 as 4 ½-point favorites, avenging an opening night loss at Miami. The cover was the first as a home favorite in six tries for Washington, as the Wizards shot 54% from the floor and nailed 10 three-pointers against the Heat. In fact, it was just the third double-digit win at the Verizon Center in nine tries, but the Wizards have limited three of their past four opponents at home to 86 points or less.

Spurs at Nets – 7:35 PM EST

Golden State, Memphis, and Portland are taking the Western Conference by storm through one month, but are we forgetting about the defending champions? The Spurs are riding an eight-game winning streak to put a 5-4 start behind them, as San Antonio has won seven of its past eight road contests. Gregg Popovich’s club continues a four-game East Coast swing tonight in Brooklyn coming off victories over Boston and Philadelphia, as the Spurs got past the 76ers on Monday without Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. The two future Hall-of-Famers sat out on the second of a back-to-back, but both are expected back in the lineup tonight.

The Nets are playing on the second of a back-to-back, but aren’t traveling far after holding off the Knicks last night at Madison Square Garden, 98-93 as one-point favorites. Brooklyn has cashed the ‘under’ in five straight games, which includes a 99-87 setback at San Antonio on its previous road trip on November 22, the seventh loss in the past eight meetings with the Spurs. The lone win in this span came last season at Barclays Center, as San Antonio sat all of its stars in a 103-89 victory by the Nets as 6 ½-point favorites.

Hawks at Heat – 7:35 PM EST

The home team has won each of the six meetings, three for the Hawks and three for the Heat since 2013. Atlanta dominated Miami in the first matchup back in mid-November, a 114-103 victory at Philips Arena as five-point favorites, as Dwyane Wade sat out with a hamstring injury. The Hawks head to South Florida tonight off a solid comeback win over the Celtics on Tuesday, erasing a 23-point deficit in a 109-105 triumph, but failed to cash as seven-point favorites. Atlanta has quietly won five of its past six games, while topping the 100-point mark in five straight contests.

The Heat returns home after splitting a pair of games at New York and Washington, but Miami hits the highway again following tonight’s contest for a five-game trip. Miami hasn’t been so hot at home recently, losing four of its past five games at the American Airlines Arena, which includes losses to Milwaukee and Indiana, while narrowly beating Charlotte by one point. Erik Spoelstra’s squad has scored under 100 points in eight straight games, but has cashed the ‘over’ in three of the past four contests.

Mavericks at Bucks – 8:05 PM EST

Dallas makes the short trip from Chicago to Milwaukee coming off a thrilling 132-129 double-overtime victory over the Bulls last night to cash as one-point underdogs. Monta Ellis and Dirk Nowitzki combined for 60 points on 24-of-57 shooting, but Devin Harris connected on all six of his three-point attempts for a key 20 points off the bench. Dallas looks for a perfect 4-0 road trip tonight, which includes close wins at Toronto and Philadelphia, as the Mavericks own a terrific 7-3 ATS record on the highway.

The Bucks couldn’t hold on to an 11-point second half lead in last night’s 111-108 setback at Cleveland, but Milwaukee managed to cover as 10 ½-point underdogs. Jason Kidd’s team hasn’t lost three straight games this season, while winning five of eight games at BMO Harris Center. Seven of the past nine contests have finished ‘over’ the total for the Bucks, including three of the past four at home. The Bucks have dropped four of the past five meetings with the Mavericks, while Dallas has claimed the last two visits to Milwaukee.

Grizzlies at Rockets – 8:05 PM EST

The last time these two teams met up in Memphis on November 17, the Grizzlies jumped out to a 23-point halftime lead and never looked back in a 119-93 blowout of the Rockets. James Harden had his worst game of the season in that loss, getting limited to six points on 1-of-8 shooting, while the Rockets misfired on 26 of 34 three-point attempts. The Rockets return to the court tonight after a three-day layoff, coming off an impressive shooting performance in a 117-103 victory at Milwaukee on Saturday.

The Grizzlies conclude a four-game road trip tonight after winning the first three contests, capped off by a 97-85 triumph at Sacramento on Sunday as four-point favorites. Memphis has won seven of nine games away from FedEx Forum, but one of those defeats came at the end of a road trip at Milwaukee back in November. There are plenty of ‘under’ trends to keep an eye on tonight, as the Grizzlies are 6-3 to the ‘under’ on the road, while the Rockets are a perfect 9-0 to the ‘under’ at the Toyota Center.

Bucks lose, but continue to be best ATS bet

The Milwaukee Bucks lost their third straight game Wednesday night falling 107-105 in heartbreaking fashion to the Dallas Mavericks, but covered once again and are the hottest bet against the spread in the NBA.

Despite Monta Ellis' game winning shot, the Bucks managed to cover the four-point spread, making it their fifth cover in their last six games and improving the record to 14-6 ATS. The best mark in the NBA.

Milwaukee hosts Miami (8-9-1 ATS) Friday night.

76ers finally get first win and are red hot ATS

The Philadelphia 76ers grabbed their first win of the season in Minnesota Wednesday night, avoided a dubious record and covered the spread all in one night.

With their 85-77 win over the Timberwolves, the Sixers improved to 1-17 and won't set the record for most consecutive losses to start a season.

It was also their third consecutive cover and fifth in their last six games. Philly takes their win streak to Oklahoma City Friday to take on the Thunder.

                    December 4, 2014

Is the Western Conference better than the Eastern Conference?

Even though Sportsbook.ag has Cleveland currently listed as the top betting choice (3/1), the obvious answer is “Yes.”

After the Cavaliers, nine of the next 11 teams in the future odds are from the West. San Antonio is considered the top choice (9/2) in the West but right behind them is Golden State at 13/2 odds (Bet $100 to win $650).

Under new head coach Steve Kerr, Golden State has started the season with a 15-2 record, which includes a current winning streak of 10.

In a league that places a premium on shooting, the Warriors have two of the best gunners in Stephen Curry (23.7 PPG) and Klay Thompson (20.9 PPG).

This pair has helped Golden State become the best shooting team (48.5%) in the league and its ranked third in scoring at 106.5 PPG and third in 3-point field goal percentage (37.9).

Kerr has been riding the pair and Curry has put himself into early Most Valuable Player talk. Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.ag have him as a 3/1 choice to win the top award. The favorite is still LeBron James (7/5) but my opinion, the value is with Curry.

What’s more impressive about Golden State is that power forward David Lee has played seven minutes this season. He’s been out with a hamstring injury and his return will help a frontcourt that’s considered the weakness of this squad.

Another factor that has helped Golden State is its ability to beat inferior opponents, in particular the Eastern Conference. The Warriors have gone 10-0 against teams with .500 records or worse and 7-0 vs. the East.

Golden State isn’t the only club acting like bullies. Portland (7-0), Houston (6-0), Dallas (9-2), San Antonio (7-1) and the L.A. Clippers (5-1) have all dominated in non-conference affairs.

The Warriors will face a stiffer test on Thursday when New Orleans visits Oracle Arena. The Pelicans have gone 8-8 this season and they’ve been inconsistent on the road (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS).

New Orleans has managed to score this season (101.2 PPG) despite less than average numbers in 3-point shooting 33.9%) and free throw shooting (72.7%).

What’s a little weird is that the Hornets (85.8) have picked up their shots per game this season. Coincidentally, the Warriors (82.2) have slowed the tempo down.

New Orleans is averaging 6.3 blocks per game, which is the second best in the league. Guess who’s first? Surprisingly, it’s Golden State at 6.4 BPG.

Helping the Pelicans is All-Star power forward Anthony Davis (24.9 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 3.1 BPG). The third-year player is also mentioned in MVP talks, currently listed as a 4/1 choice at Sportsbook.ag.

These teams played three times last season and Golden State won all three, which includes a 104-93 win in the Bay Area as nine-point favorites. Make a note that New Orleans didn’t have Davis or Tyreke Evans in the road loss. The ‘under’ cashed in all three.

Oddsmakers opened Golden State as 7 ½-point home favorite and that number has been bumped up to 8 and 8 ½-points at most shops. The Warriors have gone 6-1 straight up and 4-3 against the spread at home this season.
Thursday’s card offers up two other matchups as well.

Cleveland at New York: This is a hard game to handicap for a variety of factors. Oddsmakers expect Cleveland to win, opening the club as a 7 ½-point road favorite. However, the Cavaliers have gone 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS as visitors this season. Even though N.Y. has been a mess, the Knicks defeated the Cavaliers 90-85 as a 13 ½-point road underdogs on opening night of the season. Since that victory, New York has gone 3-15 (4-14 ATS) and that includes a dreadful 2-7 mark at Madison Square Garden. Heading into Thursday, the Knicks have dropped five straight and their last win before this skid came against the 76ers. New York has trouble scoring (93.4 PPG) this season and the defense (99.1 PPG) isn’t great either. Considering its high expectations, Cleveland hasn’t been great (9-7 SU, 7-9 ATS) by any means but it does enter this game with a four-game winning streak intact. Possible look ahead spot for Cleveland, who head to Toronto on Friday and the Raptors have already embarrassed the Cavs on their court this season. TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 8:05 p.m. ET.

Indiana at Portland: The Trail Blazers opened as 8 ½-point home favorites and it’s hard to argue against that line when you look at their tendencies at home. Portland has gone 9-2 SU and 7-3-1 ATS at the Moda Center this season and seven of those wins have come by nine or more points. Despite losing key components in Paul George and Lance Stephenson this season, the Pacers have been a formidable opponent (7-11 SU, 10-8 ATS). Indiana (96.4 PPG) still has a great defense and that’s all Frank Vogel, who people wanted to cut loose during last year’s postseason. Despite going 3-6 SU on the road this season, the Pacers have produced a 7-2 record vs. the number. Against the Western Conference, Indiana has gone 2-5 SU and 3-4 ATS, one of the wins coming at Dallas. The home team has won the last eight encounters between this pair but I would tread lightly with that angle since Indiana has a different roster this season.

Team USA stars off to strong starts

                      December 4, 2014

The first time the Golden State Warriors practiced this season, new coach Steve Kerr noticed something different about Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson compared to the rest of the team.

The backcourt tandem, fresh off helping the U.S. to a gold medal in the FIBA World Cup, had spent all summer playing together.

''They were definitely ahead of everyone in training camp,'' Kerr said. ''You could just see it. They were in a groove from the first exhibition game, and they've played great throughout the first few weeks of the season.''

                      They're not alone, either.

Many of the players on that team have carried the success from Spain back to the NBA. While the risks of participating dominated the national dialogue after Paul George's gruesome right leg injury and Kevin Durant dropped out, those who stayed believe there's a link between the work this summer and the wins this fall.

''When you get a chance to do something like that, especially in the summer, it gives us kind of like motivation and energy leading into the season,'' said Anthony Davis, who leads New Orleans against Golden State on Thursday night. ''It makes sure you go into the season running instead of having to get back in shape and get your game back on point.''

Davis entered Thursday's games averaging career highs of 24.9 points, 11.3 rebounds and 3.1 blocks. Thompson and Curry each won Western Conference Player of the Week honors to open the season, and Curry also took home Western Conference Player of the Month honors.

The streaky shooting ''Splash Brothers'' have the Golden State Warriors (15-2) off to their best start in franchise history, including winning 10 straight games. James Harden has the Houston Rockets looking like title contenders, too, and DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay are beginning to bring the Sacramento Kings back to relevance after eight consecutive losing seasons.

Players say they returned to their teams confident, conditioned and craving another chance to compete at basketball's highest levels.

''I haven't really had that feeling playing in that type of game maybe since college when I was playing in the NCAA tournament,'' said Cousins, who is averaging career bests of 23.5 points, 12.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks. ''Being in that type of game, it felt good to win.''

But the impact of playing for Team USA goes beyond statistics for players.

Kyrie Irving said playing with some of the game's greatest stars helped prepare him for his role next to LeBron James and Kevin Love on the reconstructed Cleveland Cavaliers. Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond credits his time with Team USA for teaching him how to be a leader. The experience inspired Denver's Kenneth Faried to improve.

Thompson attributes the growth in his game to a self-assured attitude and a better understanding of how to maximize his talents.

''I knew I could play. I sort of surprised myself and it gave me a whole new sense of confidence coming into the season just knowing that I could be such a big factor on such a great team,'' said Thompson, who is averaging a career-high 20.9 points and become one of the league's best on-ball defenders.

In some cases, though, playing this summer has reignited questions about being overworked.

Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan is out indefinitely with a torn tendon in his left groin. Chicago's Derrick Rose, who used the experience to get back into playing shape after missing most of the last two years with knee injuries, has sprained both ankles and been bothered by a sore left hamstring. Gay also has dealt with tendinitis in his right Achilles tendon.

There's no way to say whether those injuries are due to playing for Team USA. Players do say, however, that recovering for the NBA season is more of a concern for older veterans than for any of the young guys who participated. Gay was the oldest player on the team - and he's still just 28.

No player averaged more than 25 minutes with Team USA, and most say that beating Finland by 59, the Dominican Republic by 35 and Slovenia by 33 might not have helped them get that much better. But the competition in practices was intense and unlike anything most had ever faced.

''It forced you to get better,'' Curry said. ''And I think we all came out of it feeling like we did.''
