Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 12 upon us.......

-- Washington is 3-8 in its last eleven games as a road underdog.

-- Tennessee covered twice in its last eight road games.

-- Raiders covered three of last 14 tries as a home underdog.

-- Patriots covered 10 of last 13 non-divisional home games.

-- Jaguars are 5-10 last 15 times they were underdog of 7+ points.

-- Cowboys are 17-6 in game following their last 23 byes.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Pretty sad that Jay Gruden apologized Wednesday for criticizing RGIII for what he said after the loss to Tampa Bay Sunday. In this day and age, speaking your mind only gets you in trouble. People risk their lives to protect our freedoms, but the freedom of speech seems to be slipping away anyway.

12) Bucks 122, Nets 118, 3 OT-- Jason Kidd's return to Brooklyn turned out to be a tremendous game, full of twists/turns and drama. Bucks have a nice young team that has a solid future. OJ Mayo had 21 points in 39 minutes off the bench; Milwaukee was +13 while he was oin the floor, -9 while he was off it.

11) Spurs 92, Cavaliers 90-- Kawhi Leonard held Lebron James to 6-17 from floor as Cleveland fell to 5-5, 2-3 at home. Lebron took only one foul shot the whole game.

10) Celtics 101, 76ers 90-- Sixers are now 0-11, on their way to becoming the worst team in NBA history. 76ers-Knicks in NYC Saturday should be a treat.

9) Timberwolves 115, Knicks 99-- Minnesota was floundering since Ricky Rubio got hurt, but they won easily here. Knicks' starters other than Anthony combined to miss 18 of 26 shots- at least their bench was 17-32. Anthony only took seven shots (7-10).

8) Not sure if this is the right time, but the Knicks are 3-10; there is only so much help PG Calderon will be when he returns soon from his injury. Why exactly did the Knicks pay Phil Jackson $12M a year? He's never constructed a roster before.

7) Suns 88, Pistons 86-- Seven of last nine Detroit games were decided by 4 or less points, or in overtime. Pistons are struggling (3-9) but they're fun to watch.

6) Kent State-Buffalo game was postponed because of the snowstorm in Buffalo; am guessing this game will be re-scheduled on some odd night when ESPN needs some programming. These two teams are starving for mational TV exposure.

5) Raptors 96, Grizzlies 92-- Toronto is 9-2, but eight of 11 games were played at home. Memphis is 10-2 but no one talks about them. What would ABC ever do if the Finals wound up being Memphis-Toronto? Good teams, bad TV ratings.

4) Not sure if it is solely for recruiting appearances, but 69-year old Steve Fisher signed a 3-year contract extentrion with the Aztecs Wednesday. San Diego State was a downtrodden program when Fisher took over; now they regularly lead the West Coast teams in attendance.

3) Gonzaga 94, St Joe's 42-- This game was 48-10 at the half. 48 to freakin' 10. Zags are really good, while Hawks are rebuilding. Spokane isn't a very good place to visit this year if your team is rebuilding.

2) Creighton 65, Oklahoma 63-- Sooners led by 18 early in second half, new-look Bluejays got untracked and stormed from behind to pull the upset. Games like this are why big-name teams don't go out on the road too often before Christmas.

1) Marshawn Lynch got docked $100K for not talking to the media; what he has to do is study some Belichick tapes, when the Patriots' coach fulfills his duty by saying words to the press, while never saying anything of substance. Saves him lot of cash.

Deng has a wrist injury and missed Monday's game. He is unlikely to play Thursday against the Clippers.

Mavs, Bucks continue ATS run, are NBA's best bets

The Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks extended their winning streaks straight up and against the spread Wednesday night and are now the NBA's best bets.

The Mavericks held on for a 105-102 win against the Washington Wizards, barely covering as 2.5-point road faves. It was their fifth win and cover in a row and are now 9-3 ATS on the season.

The bigger surprise is clearly the Bucks. They won 122-118 straight up, as 6.5-point road dogs in Jason Kidd's return to Brooklyn. It was their sixth cover in their last seven games and they are also 9-3 ATS.

Road teams come through for backers Wednesday night

Teams in the visiting locker rooms had the upper hand on Wednesday night and came through for backers in a big way.

Road teams went 7-2-2 against the spread last night, good for a success rate of almost 78 percent. Road favorites went 3-1 ATS and road underdogs went 4-1-2 ATS.

With just two games on tap Thursday the Los Angeles Clippers and the Chicago Bulls will try to keep the trend going in Miami and Sacramento respectively.

For first week or two, we'll give you what info we have to give on the most interesting games of the day. In my opinion, its way too early to be picking games. These teams had scrimmages but results aren't released, so hard to know whats up until we watch some real games.

Detroit lost 83-66 at Oregon late Monday as part of ESPN marathon, in game that was tied at half. Ducks made just 9-33 from arc; Detroit shot 34% inside arc. Michigan crushed Bucknell in its opener; they lost three starters from LY's 28-9 team, are extremely young now. Titans has three starters back from LY, but this game is a quick turnaround.

SMU has good team, but got whacked 72-56 at Gonzaga late Monday in ESPN's hoop marathon; Mustangs has three starters back from its 27-10 club that lost NIT title game in April. Indiana had rough off-season, with lot of off-court drama; Hoosiers beat couple of stiff teams easily- they've got two starters back from LY's 17-15 team (7-11 in Big 14).

Alabama scored 81 ppg in winning first two games, struggling mightily to beat Western Carolina 80-74 Monday; Tide was 32-42 from line, but just 2-17 from arc. Southern Mississippiu has new coach, five new starters after LY's 29-7 team went 13-3 in C-USA. USM beat South Alabama by 9 Monday, after trailing by ten late in first half.

Arizona State won ugly 49-39 game over Bethune-Cookman Monday, as ASU dumbed down its schedule after losing PG Carson from LY's 21-12 team. Sun Devils added four JC players this year, now have six on their roster. You sign JC kids to contribute now. LMU split couple of home games to start season; their new coach is former Bobcat coach Dunlap.

Texas A&M has four starters back from 18-16 team that went 8-10 in Big X; Aggies hammered a stiff team in their opener, hard to tell what'll happen on neutral court vs Dayton team that also beat a stiff in its only game so far. Flyers lost three starters from 26-11 team that got to Elite 8 in NCAAs- they played in Maui LY, are used to this type of scenario.

New Mexico lost three starters from 27-7 team that went 15-3 in MWC but then laid egg in NCAA's; Lobos won first two games by 24-9 points, outscoring Fullerton 24-2 from line in 67-59 win Sunday. Boston College has three starters back from LY but new coach, new system; they struggled with UNH in opener, then lost 71-62 to UMass Sunday, after they led by 8 at half.

West Virginia has had lot of turnover last couple years; Mountainners are picked to finish 7th in Big X- they allowed average of 55 ppg in beating a couple stiffs to open season, by 10-27 points. George Mason beat Princeton by 3 after losing to Cornell in its opener-- Patriots have three starters back from 11-20 team that went 4-12 in A-14.

Not much time for Miami to celebrate after they upset Florida 69-67 in Gainesville Monday, after being down 15; senior transfer PG Rodriguez is huge add for Canes- he had 24 vs Gators. Drexel scored 48-49 points in losing first two games, 65-48 at Colorado, 52-49 at home to St Joe's club that was down 48-10 at the half last night at Gonzaga.

Penn State allowed 51 ppg in winning first two games over stiffs by 13-19 points; Lions have four starters back from 16-18 team, but starter that left was star G Frazier. Charlotte has four starters back from 17-14 team that went 7-9 in C-USA; 49ers were just 16-32 in line in 73-60 win in its opener at Elon-- they also hit seven of 15 treys, go figure.

Texas has all five starters back from 24-11 team that went 11-7 in Big X and won game in NCAAs; Longhorns weren't tested in first two games, winning by 35-32 points over stiffs. Iowa has three starters back from 20-13 team that faded late in season and lost play-in game. Hawkeyes are 2-0 after similar start, hammering couple of inferior opponents.

Syracuse is little down this year after losing three starters from LYs 28-6 team; they lost two players early to NBA, including PG Ennis after only one season. Orange allowed 45.5 ppg in beating couple lame opponents to start year- they'll have crowd edge here. Cal has new coach in former Tennessee coach Martin; they scored 92 ppg in winning first two games.

Denver runs Princeton offense, which is tough to get ready for on short notice; Pioneers have four starters back from 16-15 team that went 8-6 in its first year in Summit. St Mary's beat New Mexico State by 12 very late Monday night in ESPN's hoop marathon; Gaels lost three starters from 23-12 team that went 11-7 in WCC last season.
