    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting college football games this weekend........

-- K-State @ West Virginia-- Better than average Thursday night game.

-- Minnesota @ Nebraska-- Huskers are 11-point favorite that allowed Badgers to run for 581 yards last week; what do you think their practices are like this week?

-- Wisconsin @ Iowa-- Can QB Stave hit some big passes against Hawkeye defense that undoubtedly will focus on RB Gordon.

-- Ole Miss @ Arkansas-- Bielema got SEC monkey off his back last week, now the Rebels come to town with a better offense than LSU's. Interesting game.

-- Arizona @ Utah-- Wildcats find way to win every week; their kicker used to be the manager of the womens' soccer team. He won the Washington game Saturday.

-- USC @ UCLA-- Mora's third year with Bruins, third different USC head coach he is going up against in this rivalry game.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Our bottom 5, top 8 in NFL....

    32) Raiders-- Oakland has now lost 16 games in row, but are 5-5 vs spread this year. Their last win was at Houston, last home win against the Steelers.

    31) Jaguars-- Outscored 46-13 in the first half of last three games; they had bye this week, are 3-1 in last four post-bye games.

    30) Jets-- Were outscored 65-21 in last two post-bye games; have winnable game this week in Buffalo. Jets are 3-8-1 in last 12 games as divisional road underdog.

    29) Titans-- Only win since season opener was 16-14 over Jaguars. Mettenberger is promising, but three of bottom four on this list are playing rookie QBs.

    28) Redskins-- When the head coach starts criticizing the starting QB in the media, there are problems. Either that, or he's not going to be the starter much longer. Making it dicier is fact that they traded a boatload of draft picks to take RGIII. Whoops.

    8) Cowboys-- Do broken backs heal in two weeks? Didn't think so. Four of their last six games are divisional games- they also play the Colts. Dallas lost three of its last four post-bye games.

    7) Chiefs-- Won last five games, three by 4 or less points. Scored 30.8 ppg in winning last four home games, after losing season opener to Tennessee.

    6) Colts-- Got pushed around by Patriots Sunday night; they're only 6-4, one game up on the Texans in AFC South. Finish with three road games in last four weeks.

    5) Seahawks-- You get feeling they're not enjoying their season too much; Pat Riley calls it "The Disease of Me" when everyone takes credit for the team's success, when it shouldn't matter who gets the credit. They need Marshawn Lynch, but he seems like a royal pain in the butt at times.

    4) Broncos-- Averaging 34.6 ppg at home, where they play this week for first time in four weeks. They brought Richie Incognito in for a reason; they need help on the OL to protect their QB, who is immobile. they didn't sign him, but it was a signal they're not comfortable with their OL.

    3) Packers-- On serious roll right now; they're crushing teams at home. Their game in two weeks with New England could be interesting; later they visit Buffalo/Tampa in consecutive weeks, an interesting weather contrast.

    2) Patriots-- Healthy Gronkowski turned their offense into a steamroller; in their last three games, they scored 51-43-42 points. Right now they'd be #1 seed in AFC- only team within game of New England are the Chiefs, who own tie-breakers with Pats.

    1) Cardinals-- How in God's name is this team getting 6.5 points in Seattle this week, when they're 9-1? Stanton is as good as Palmer, but public perception is against them because they're not a popular team. This should be a good game.

NFL Opening Line Report: Books careful with Lions-Patriots in Week 12

Week 12 of the NFL season pits the top team in the AFC against one of the better teams in the NFC, with the New England Patriots playing host to the Detroit Lions.

New England (8-2 SU, 6-4 ATS) is on a tear, winning six in a row SU while cashing in five of those contests. On Sunday night, the Patriots went into Indianapolis as 3-point underdogs and emerged with a 42-20 beatdown victory. Of the six wins during their current run, five have been by at least 15 points.

Meanwhile, Detroit (7-3 SU, 5-5 ATS) couldn’t get its offense on track at Arizona, losing 14-6 as a 1-point road favorite, ending a four-game SU win streak and a 6-1 SU surge.

John Lester, senior lines manager for bookmaker.eu, said he and his staff were hesitant to quickly release the point spread for this game Monday morning, eventually putting New England up as a 7-point favorite in the afternoon.

“When the Pats are running this hot, we’re going to have a lot of one-sided action on their games,” Lester said before opening the spread at a touchdown. “I’d like to open this at the key number or higher, but I’m getting a little resistance from the room, so we will see where the dust settles. The Lions are a little bit of fool’s gold, but I do like what they’ve been able to accomplish defensively. Jim Caldwell is no stranger to game-planning for New England either.”

Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks (-6.5)

Red-hot Arizona has a chance to put a stranglehold on the NFC West. The Cardinals (9-1 SU, 8-2 ATS) have won six in a row SU and ATS, including Sunday’s 14-6 home victory as a 1-point pup against a solid Detroit Lions squad.

Seattle (6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) is in a tight spot, needing to pile up wins if it hopes for a return playoff trip and a chance to defend its Super Bowl title. The Seahawks fell short at Kansas City 24-20 laying one point Sunday.

“I never would’ve thought going into this season that the Cardinals could lose this game and still be well in control of first place in the NFC West,” Lester said. “Let’s not forget that they came to Seattle last year and won. We know that the Seahawks are struggling to find their identity, and I think Arizona can keep it close in a low-scoring affair.”

Miami Dolphins at Denver Broncos (-8)

After bouncing from New England to Oakland to St. Louis, the Broncos (7-3 SU, 5-5 ATS) finally return home, but in worse shape than when they left. Denver was the top team in the AFC a month ago, then went 1-2 SU and ATS the past three weeks, including Sunday’s stunning 22-7 loss at St. Louis as an 8-point favorite – with the Broncos suffering key injuries (Julius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders).

Miami (6-4 SU and ATS) enters with a little extra rest and in the thick of the AFC playoff chase, after a 22-9 victory over Buffalo as 4-point home chalk Thursday night. The Dolphins are 4-1 SU and ATS in their last five outings.

“We probably should have opened this at a touchdown because sharps gobbled up the -8 quickly,” Lester said. “As is the case almost every week, squares will be lining up to tease down Denver, and they’ll be eager to try and get some back after last Sunday’s upset. I’m still in the camp that doesn’t completely trust (Dolphins quarterback) Ryan Tannehill to not make the big mistake.”

Baltimore Ravens at New Orleans Saints (-3)

Both these teams need to start racking up wins, with Baltimore in the middle of a tight AFC North race and New Orleans leading a pack of the pathetic in the NFC South, where every team has a losing record.

The Saints, (4-6 SU and ATS), 8.5-point home chalk against Cincinnati, were dealt a stunning 27-10 loss Sunday. The Ravens (6-4 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) are coming off their bye week, following a 21-7 win over Tennessee laying 10.5 points at home.

This game wraps up Week 12, under the Monday night spotlight.

“I haven’t been sold on Baltimore from the get-go, and I’m still not,” Lester said. “Despite New Orleans’ struggles, I wanted to make this number a point higher. When the bright lights of prime time come on, the Saints always seem to show up. I expect the total to elevate; we can’t set these nationally-televised games high enough.”

NFL line watch: Wait until closer to kickoff before backing Bills

        Spread to bet now

Dallas Cowboys (-3) at New York Giants

Die hard football Giants fans are dreaming of yet another November-December run to the playoffs. They look at a schedule that after this game includes four straight against teams with losing records and wonder if Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning have any magic beans left in their pockets. That's unlikely, and the Cowboys will probably deliver the wooden stake in the Giants' hearts this Sunday in East Rutherford. The ‘Boys, who are the only undefeated (4-0) team on the road this season, opened at -3 and the public has been jumping on them in early betting. It’s doubtful that the sharps will come in late on this one even if the number moves to 3.5. Dallas needs this one to keep pace with Philadelphia in the NFC East.

        Spread to wait on

New York Jets at Buffalo Bills (-4.5)

The Jets are long gone and out of things, but they haven’t packed it in as evidenced by their unlikely win over the white-hot Steelers a week ago. New York forced four turnovers in that game, and has had a week off to get ready for the 5-5 Bills. The extra half-point in this one makes it a hard swallow for backers on the Bills. Buffalo crushed the Jets in late October, but the Bills haven’t won since then, losing twice (KC, Miami) in five days. It’s in the Jets’ interest to turn this one into a taffy pull, so the fraction of a point could be very important. Hang on to see if the number changes before pulling the trigger.

        Total to watch

Miami Dolphins at Denver Broncos (50)

Think Peyton Manning will want to fire the ball all over Mile High after being on the road for the last month, getting stuffed by a mediocre St. Louis team and taking two losses in the last three games? And if all that’s not bad enough, say hello to the Chiefs, who have tied the Broncos in the AFC West at 7-3 and get Denver at home on Nov. 30. Denver’s defense has been exposed over the last three weeks, and the Dolphins themselves aren’t half bad when they have the ball. Looks like a lot of points on the way here as the last thing Denver wants to do is grind it out and give Miami a chance to make it a fourth quarter game.

                Armadillo's Write-Up

                Tuesday, November 18

For first week or two, we'll give you what info we have to give on the most interesting games of the day. In my opinion, its way too early to be picking games. These teams had scrimmages but results aren't released, so hard to know whats up until we watch some real games.

Baylor lost three starters from LY's 26-12 team; they beat South Carolina 66-64 at home LY, despite missing 19 of 41 FTs. Bears are smaller than usual, so they'll play faster. Carolina has four starters back from 14-20 team that went 5-13 in SEC; they turned ball over 21.3% of possessions LY, 320th out of 351 teams in country. Their guards are better now.

Wichita State has three starters back from 35-1 team that went 18-0 in Valley, but lost to Kentucky in second round of NCAAs; they've won 65 games last two years, but were 0-11 from arc in 71-54 opening win over New Mexico State. Memphis has totally inexperienced guards; none of them have played a minute of college basketball going into this game.

San Diego State averaged 27.8 wins last five years; they've got three of its starters back from LY's 31-5 team, are little thin with injuries right now. Utah has 4 starters back from 21-12 team that went 9-9 in Pac-12; they never trailed in 71-54 opening win over Ball State, even with Cardinals making 10-22 from arc. Aztecs beat Northridge 79-58 in their opener.

Toledo has four starters back from 27-7 team that went 14-4 in MAC but lost in conference tourney; they held NAU to 33% from floor in their opening 71-58, outscoring Lumberjacks 22-8 from line. VCU made 11-29 from arc, 24-40 from line in 85-69 win over Tennessee; Rams forced 19 turnovers, but also turned ball over 18 times themselves.

Richmond beat Old Dominion by 8-27-9 points in last three meetings in what used to be CAA rivalry; Monarchs made 8-15 from arc in 76-56 win over UNCW in its opener. ODU has four starters back from 18-18 team that went 9-7 in its first year in C-USA. Richmond has 3 starters back from 19-14 team that went 8-8 in A-14.

Saint Louis lost all five starters from team that won 81 games last three seasons; Billikens were 8-15 from arc in 62-59 opening win vs Southern Illinois Friday; this is one of only two true road games for SLU before Jan 6. Indiana State lost its top two scorers and another starters from its 23-11 team LY. Sycamores needed OT to beat IUPUI in its opener.

Long Beach State always overschedules in pre-conference play; they've got four starters back from 15-17 team that went 10-6 in Big West- they get immediate help inside from FGCU transfer McKnight. 49ers lost by 5 at BYU in opener, despite making 13-22 from arc. Xavier hammered Northern Arizona in opener; they've got six returnees, six freshmen.

Michigan State struggled to beat Navy 64-59 in opener, shooting only 10 FTs; Izzo's teams often struggle out of gate, as he gears them towards the postseason. Spartans lost by 10 to Duke in '13 NCAAs, in last meeting. Duke has one of best freshman in country (Okafor); they made 47.2% of its 3-pointers in first two games. Competition here will be little stiffer.

Ohio State has three starters back from 25-10 team that went 10-8 in Big 14; Buckeyes averaged 29.6 wins last five years, but lost its top 3 scorers from LY. Marquette has new coach, lost 71% of scoring from LY, 82% of 3-point shooting from 17-15 team that was 9-9 in Big East- they won opener over UT-Martin, making 10-23 from arc, forcing 19 turnovers.

Minnesota lost its opener to Louisville in helicopter hangar last week in Puerto Rico, putting Cards on foul line 42 times; Gophers have 4 starters back from 25-13 team. Western Kentucky beat Austin Pay 77-70 in its opener, after being down 10 in first half. Hilltoppers have four starters back from 20-12 team that is moving up to C-USA this season.

Kentucky struggled a little with Buffalo Sunday; they were down 5 at the half before winning 71-52, holding Bulls to 14 second half points. UK is really talented, but is playing two 5-man units, which has to be hard to manage. Kansas beat UCSB making just 2-10 from but getting to line 32 times. Can young Jayhawks get to line 32 times against Kentucky?

LaSalle won opener 57-52 over Colgate (was 22-21 at half); Explorers are middle of pack team in A-14- their two transfers combined to go 0-7 on arc in opener, not what was expected. Quinnipiac beat Yale in double OT in its opener, shooting just 5-19 from arc. Four starters played 41:00+ in that game. Bobcats lost three starters from LY's 20-12 team.

Murray State lost opener 77-74 as 12-point favorite to Houston; Racers were +7 in turnovers, were just 6-25 from arc. Murray has four starters back from 23-11 team that won CIT title. Middle Tennessee lost four of its starters from 24-9 team that went 13-3 in first year in C-USA. Blue Raiders won 80-62 at Murray LY, shooting 55% inside arc, 5-10 on it.

                    Tuesday, November 18

                    Hornets F Kidd-Gilchrist, questionable Wednesday

Kidd-Gilchrist has an injured right foot and missed the last three games. He is questionable to return Wednesday against the Pacers.

Mavericks, Trail Blazers are NBA's best bets

Both the Dallas Mavericks and the Portland Trail Blazers extended their win and cover streaks Monday night and are now the best bets in the NBA at 8-3 against the spread.

The Mavs went into Charlotte and crushed the Hornets 107-80 as 4-point road faves for their fourth straight win and cover.

Meanwhile, the Blazers defeated New Orleans 102-93 as 3.5-point home favorites for their fifth straight win. It was the Blazers third straight cover and they have covered the spread in seven of their past eight games.

Clippers fall to Bulls, are the Association's worst bet

The Los Angeles Clippers continue to fail to meet expectations this season after their 105-89 loss to the Chicago Bulls Monday night and they continue to be the NBA's worst bet.

The Clippers, who closed as 7-point homes favorites, struggled to keep up with a Chicago team with no Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol in the second half and have now fallen to 1-8 against the spread this season. Good for dead last in the NBA.

It doesn't get any easier for the Clippers who open a seven-game road trip in Orlando Wednesday.

Road teams, under trending Monday night

Road teams and the under where the best bets if you were laying in NBA action on Monday night.

Teams on the road went 6-3 against the spread Monday night, good for a success rate of almost 67 percent. Meanwhile the under also went 6-3.

NBA roundup: Kings file protest over loss

The NBA announced Monday that the Sacramento Kings have protested the team's 111-110 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Nov. 13 at FedExForum.

The basis for the Kings' protest is that guard Courtney Lee's game-winning shot should have been disqualified as having been made after time expired.

Under the protest procedures in the NBA Constitution, Memphis and Sacramento each will have an opportunity to submit evidence in support of its position and the protest will be decided by Dec. 2.

With just 0.3 of a second showing on the clock, Grizzlies guard Vince Carter threw an overhead inbounds pass from the side of the court to under the basket. Lee raced to meet the ball and tossed it in, looking over his shoulder to see if the red light on the backboard had come on yet. It hadn't.

The officials spent several minutes reviewing the play. The Kings' bench believed that Ryan Hollins, who was guarding Carter, had tipped the pass.

--The Phoenix Suns recalled two rookies, guard Tyler Ennis and forward T.J. Warren, from the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Ennis, the 18th overall pick of the 2014 draft from Syracuse, has appeared in two games with the Suns this season. Warren (6-8, 230), the 14th overall selection from North Carolina State, has played in one game with the Suns.

--The Sacramento Kings recalled rookie forward Eric Moreland from Reno of the NBA Development League.

The 6-foot-10, 218-pound Moreland, who played at Oregon State, was assigned to Reno on Nov. 4 and played in two games for the Bighorns. He totaled 30 points with 26 rebounds, three assists, five steals and one block in 58 minutes in starting both games.

--The Cleveland Cavaliers recalled rookie center Alex Kirk from the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League.

The 7-foot, 245-pound Kirk, 23, has appeared in two games for the Cavs this season, scoring two points.

-- The Los Angeles Lakers will be without forward Ryan Kelly for at least six weeks after he tore his right hamstring on Sunday night against the Golden State Warriors.

Kelly was examined on Monday morning when an ultrasound revealed the injury.

He has appeared in three games this season and averaged 3.7 points a game.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michigan State Spartans vs. Duke Blue Devils (OFF)

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has opted to downplay expectations with his 18th-ranked Spartans set to face No. 3 Duke in Indianapolis on Tuesday night, and considering how the Blue Devils have looked so far this season, that might be a wise strategy. "I'd say Duke, right now, is probably the best team," said Izzo, who added that "I'm looking forward to it because if we play like we did (in our opener), we'll get embarrassed, and that's sometimes a good thing. But I don't think that's going to happen." Duke has won its first two games by a combined 119 points while Michigan State struggled to a five-point victory over Navy in its 2014-15 debut.

The Blue Devils have received tremendous production early on from their four-man freshman class, which combined for 50 points, 19 rebounds, 10 assists, six steals and three blocks in Saturday's 109-59 win over Fairfield. “All four of them bring a different skill or different thing to the table, and all four of them are very mature," said senior guard Quinn Cook. "They pick up things well, and I can’t say enough about them. They’re great – all four of them.” Jahlil Okafor is widely considered the best of the bunch and has lived up to the hype with 36 points and 15 rebounds in the first two games on 17-of-20 shooting.

                        ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (1-0):
The Spartans' season opener was highlighted by the play of Travis Trice, who scored a career-high 25 points, adding five rebounds and five assists without a turnover. Fellow senior Branden Dawson, the team's top returning scorer and rebounder, contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists, but junior swingman Denzel Valentine was limited to five points on 2-of-10 shooting and committed three of his team's 15 turnovers. Michigan State shattered the school record by making 307 3-pointers and began the current campaign by draining 8-of-19 on Friday, including a sizzling 5-of-6 effort by Trice.

                        ABOUT DUKE (2-0):
The Blue Devils' top five scorers on the young season consist of Cook and the four freshmen, all of whom are shooting at least 60 percent from the field. Cook has knocked down half of his 14 3-pointers this year and Duke, as a team, is shooting better than 47 percent from behind the arc. To highlight the depth of the current group of Blue Devils, junior guard Rasheed Sulaimon - the team's fourth-leading scorer in 2013-14 - is currently ninth on the squad with an average of six points per game.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Michigan State is 0-5-1 ATS in its last six non-conference games.
                        * Duke is 5-1 ATS in its last six non-conference games.
                        * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Kentucky Wildcats (OFF)

When No. 1 Kentucky and No. 5 Kansas square off Tuesday at the Champions Classic in Indianapolis, the matchup will feature a terrific mix of college basketball's past, present and future. The past involves the two winningest teams in the sport's history with 4,269 victories and 30 Final Fours between them - including a meeting in the 2012 national championship game, won by Kentucky. In terms of the present, these are two teams that have legitimate hopes of cutting down the nets this season, while the future is bright for many players on the Wildcats and Jayhawks, who have a combined 13 All-Americans on their current rosters.

Wildcats coach John Calipari knows that having nine All-Americans will mean nothing on Tuesday if his team can't improve from Saturday's 19-point win against Buffalo in which Kentucky trailed by five at the half. "They're a top-five team. They're predicted to be in the Final Four. They're that good," said Calipari. "And if we play like we did in the first half last game, we'll get smashed. If we play like we did in the second half, we've got a chance." Kansas coach Bill Self also was less than delighted with his team's last contest - a season-opening 10-point win over UC Santa Barbara - saying afterward, "We’re going to have to do a much better job of being tougher in rotation rebounding and really paying attention to that, because (Kentucky is) really good. They’re long, and they’re going to be hard to score against."

                        TV:
                        9 p.m. ET, ESPN

                        ABOUT KANSAS (1-0):
Freshman guard Devonte Graham sparked the Jayhawks with a team-high 14 points off the bench on Friday and could get the start Tuesday in place of Brannen Greene (three points in the opener). Perry Ellis, who provides stability in the front court for Kansas, recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds after contributing five double-doubles a season ago. In addition to Ellis, the other returning starter for the Jayhawks is sophomore guard Wayne Selden Jr., who hopes to improve his shooting from 2013-14 but opened this campaign with a 2-of-8 effort for 10 points, including 0-of-3 from behind the arc.

                        ABOUT KENTUCKY (2-0):
The Wildcats have received tremendous scoring balance through two games, with nine players averaging between five and 13 points. One bright spot has been the play of Trey Lyles, who is averaging 13 points on 10-of-15 shooting so far, although fellow freshman big man Karl-Anthony Towns has been limited to 5.5 points on 4-of-13 shooting on the young season. Centers Willie Cauley-Stein and Dakari Johnson are limited offensively, but they have combined for tremendous statistics through two games - 18.5 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks per game between them.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Kansas is 0-5 ATS in its last five non-conference games.
                        * Kentucky is 7-1-1 ATS in its last nine neutral site games.
                        * Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
