    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six intriguing football games on next weekend's card.......

-- Alabama (-6) @ LSU-- Both teams had this past weekend off.

-- Baylor @ Oklahoma (-4.5)-- Sooners gained 1,284 yards in last two games.

-- Ohio State @ Michigan State (-3.5)-- Dantonio is a highly underrated coach.

-- Notre Dame @ Arizona State (-1.5)-- ASU has the Irish QB (Kelly).

-- Kansas State @ TCU (-5)-- Lot of purple in crowd for this big game.

    -- 49ers @ Saints (-3.5)-- 4-4 Niners try to avoid going under .500.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

    13) Saints 28, Panthers 10-- New Orleans snapped long road losing skid by holding Carolina to 231 yards. 4-4 Saints are in first place in AFC South. Carolina is 1-5-1 in last seven games after its 2-0 start; they scored total of 36 points (3 TD’s on last 30 drives) in last three games.

    12) Dolphins 37, Chargers 0-- Severe ugliness for San Diego, which heads into its bye on 3-game skid. San Diego's last win in south Florida was famous playoff game in 1981, when Kellen Winslow led his team to a win, then was helped off field- they lost last eight visits to Miami since then.

    11) Bengals 33, Jaguars 23-- LSU rookie Hill came off bench, ran ball 24 times for 154 yards; now we know why Les Miles didn't toss him off the team when he got in trouible last fall-- he's really good. His 154 rushing yards were most by a Bengal in any one game in last five years.

    10) Browns 22, Buccaneers 17-- Every team in AFC North is over .500. Cleveland is 5-3 halfway thru season- they have big Thursday night game with Cincinnati coming up this week. Rookie WR Evans caught seven balls for 124 yards, two TDs for Bucs; ironic because he was Johnny Manziel's #1 target at Texas A&M.

    9) Vikings 29, Redskins 26-- Washington had ball, 10-0 lead with less than 2:00 left in half, threw a pick, Vikings scored, gained momentum-- this turned into fun game in second half. Think rookie QB Bridgewater learned during game from watching RGIII use his feet to pick up key first downs- he needs to use his mobility more.

Odd stat: Jay Gruden is 0-6 on replay challenges; the NFL average is 36%.

    8) Eagles 31, Texans 21-- "Costly victory" is a cliche, but Philly lost QB Foles, LB Ryans for year with injuries; Mark Sanchez (15-22/202, 2 TD, 2 INT) is now Eagles' QB. Houston rookie Clowney sat out another game; NFL.com reported that Texans coaches are getting frustrated because Clowney has already missed seven games.

    7) Chiefs 24, Jets 10-- Don't think the Jets get outcoached? In their last six games, Jet opponents, on their first drive of the game, have scored four TDs, two FGs, with 394 yards allowed on 46 plays (8.6 yards per play). Chiefs converted 8 of 13 on 3rd down, in only game this week with no turnovers by either side.

    6) Cardinals 28, Cowboys 17-- Romo didn't play; only Cowboy TD before last 2:00 was scored by their defense. Arizona (7-1) has best record in NFL; they had four TDs in four trips to red zone. Dallas scored seven points in three red zone drives-- they've scored exactly 17 points in all three losses

    5) Rams 13, 49ers 10-- Niners had 1st-and-goal from inside 3-yard line with 0:43 left but didn't score, as Kaepernick fumbled on QB sneak on last play of game. Rams had to make 18 personnel moves during week to replenish an injury-ravaged roster, this was a really good win for them.

    4) Patriots 43, Broncos 21-- 110 passes were thrown in this game, most in history of NFL, for a non-OT game. Patriots converted 6-11 on third down, won field position by 14 yards. Brady is now 11-5 in games vs Manning; Patriots won last five games (4-1 vs spread); they covered 14 of last 18 when getting points, are 26-18 vs spread in last 44 home games.

    3) Seahawks 30, Raiders 24-- Seattle led 24-3 at half, but blocked punt for TD got Oakland back in game. Raiders are winless, but none of their four losses in true road games were by more than 10 points. Odd note on Seattle: on their first drives in third quarter this season, Seattle offense has been outscored 7-3 by opponents' defense or special teams- they've gained only 148 yards om 43 plays on those drives.

    2) Steelers 36, Ravens 23-- Roethlisberger is first QB in NFL history to throw 12 TD passes in two-game span. Of the 22 guys who started for Baltimore's Super Bowl champs two years ago, only eight of those players are still on the Ravens.

Steelers play their first road game in four weeks next week- they've got one home game between now and December 20th.

    1) Other notes from this weekend:
-- Steelers' retired Joe Greene's #75, just second number they've retired.
-- 45-year old Dwayne Roloson was Anaheim's emergency backup goalie Sunday; they lost two other goalies to injuries this weekend.
-- Minnesota Twins offered Paul Molitor their managing job.
-- Six most popular picks in Westgate contest went 2-4, are 28-26 this season.

NCAAF opening line report: Alabama opens as 6-point road faves vs. LSU

Alabama Crimson Tide at LSU Tigers (+6)

Alabama, where Nick Saban coaches, hopes to keep its college football playoff hopes right on track. Louisiana State, where Saban once coached, would love to send the Crimson Tide right off the rails.

That matchup is the biggest of Week 11, as teams gear up for the final mad dash to the end of college football’s regular season.

The Crimson Tide sit at 7-1 SU and are coming off a bye after dropping Tennessee 34-20, but they fell short as a massive 20-point road favorite. In fact, ‘Bama is just 2-6 ATS, tied with a host of other teams for the third-worst spread-covering record in the nation.

Meanwhile, LSU is 7-2 SU and ATS and also coming off a bye after knocking off previously unbeaten Mississippi 10-7 as a 4-point home underdog. The Tigers have won and cashed three in a row since getting trounced 41-7 at Auburn as a 7-point pup.

“The bye came at a really good time for the Tigers, emotionally and physically. They’ve got renewed confidence after beating Ole Miss, which was a sloppy win,” said John Lester, senior lines manager for bookmaker.eu. “We’ll keep an eye on (Alabama running back) T.J. Yeldon’s status (foot injury) as the week progresses and we expect he’ll be fine, but there’s rarely a shortage of talent in ‘Bama’s backfield. No question the Tide should be favorites here.”

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Arizona State Sun Devils (-1.5)

Notre Dame (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) still harbors playoff hopes, but it can’t afford to lose another game, and even then will need a lot of help in the way of losses from higher-ranked teams. On Saturday, the Fighting Irish blew a 28-7 lead at Navy, ultimately having to rally for a 49-39 victory as a 14-point road chalk.

Likewise, ASU (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) has only one blemish on its record as it tries to claim the Pac-10 title. The Sun Devils fended off Utah 19-16 in overtime Saturday, falling short as 6.5-point home faves.

“The Irish have a chance to impress the playoff committee here, but I’m not confident they can get it done,” Lester said. “Navy's triple-option wears opponents out, and it did last week, so you have to wonder if there’ll be a defensive hangover. ASU’s protection along the line is certainly a concern. The Sun Devils will need to keep this contest low-scoring.”

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan State Spartans (-3.5)

Michigan State (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) is definitely in the thick of the four-team playoff chase, coming off a 35-11 spanking of instate rival Michigan as a 17-point home chalk, then getting a bye this past weekend.

Ohio State (6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS) is also coming off a bye and looking to play spoiler while shoring up its Big 10 title hopes. The Buckeyes barely held off Penn State in their last outing, winning 31-24 in overtime while failing to cover as a 14-point road fave.

“The postseason implications are huge, and we’ll have a ton of action on this marquee matchup,” Lester said. “There was no look-ahead for the Buckeyes last week, and they appear to be focused and prepared for this one. However, with the extra time and the home-field advantage, I like the Spartans to win again.”

Oregon Ducks at Utah Utes (+9.5)

Marcus Mariota and Oregon (8-1 SU, 5-4 ATS) aim to stay on track in the Pac-12 and in the national playoff picture. The Ducks come in off a 45-16 throttling of Stanford as a 7-point home favorite, their fourth straight win and cover since a stunning home upset loss to Arizona.

Utah has been an upstart this season and one of the best teams in the nation at the betting window, going 6-2 SU and 7-1 ATS. On Saturday night, the Utes couldn’t get the win, but did get the cover in a 19-16 overtime loss at Arizona State as 6.5-point pups.

“Oregon passed the smell test against a very good Stanford defense, and they’ll have to do the same here because the Utes can certainly get after the quarterback,” Lester said. “Utah will aim to shorten this game. There’s no pressure on the home team here, they’ll be loose, and I expect they’ll have some wise-guy support. They’ve been fantastic against the number this year.”

Rockets red-hot ATS in the young season

The Houston Rockets have had no issues covering the spread in the early going of the NBA campaign, covering in all three of their first three games through Sunday.

James Harden's club has won each game handedly, with an 11-point victory over Utah the closest any team has come to giving Houston its first loss of the year.

Houston takes on the lowly Philadelphia 76ers in Pennsylvania Monday.

Five teams still perfect against the spread

One week into the young NBA season and there are still five teams who have perfect 3-0 records against the spread.

Golden State, Houston, Miami, Dallas and Minnesota sit atop the standing with unblemished records.

Golden State, Houston and Miami have gotten there with little trouble, posting 3-0 straight up records as well. Dallas' lone loss came in the season opener at San Antonio, still managing to cover. Minnesota is the biggest surprise of the bunch despite going 1-2 straight up, they have kept every game close.

76ers, Magic, Pistons are the Association's worst bets

After a week of NBA action, some things haven't changed since last season, as Philadelphia, Orlando and Detroit are once again the Association's worst bets.

The trio of Eastern Conference teams are 0-3 against the spread and straight up, putting them at the basement of the NBA standings. Which is no different from last year, when they finished in the worst three bets in the 2013-14 season.

Foursome of Eastern Conference teams top over plays

A foursome of Eastern Conference teams have been the best over plays so far in this young NBA season.

Miami, Toronto, Washington and Indiana are all a perfect 3-0 over/under to begin the season.

The Heat and Raptors are could be the most sustainable over plays with both in the top three in the Association in offensive points per game.

Rockets open as 9.5-point faves at Philly

Books have posted odds for Monday's meeting between the Houston Rockets and Philadelphia 76ers and the Rockets are 9.5-point road favorites.

Rockets center Dwight Howard was questionable for Monday's game after a knee-to-knee collision with a teammate Saturday. He did not practice Sunday.

The Rockets head into the game with perfect 3-0 straight up and against the spread marks.
