May be a third option. There's a hack I believe where they can see say 5 posts then it tells them that they must register to see the site. Personally when I go to another forum which is rarely I leave if it's a must register.

Leave it open. Making people join does not promote posting nor does it change a thing in regards to anything except a user name. Also if you shut the site down to members only or join or don't come in people may not join because they can't test ride bettorschat so to speak. How many of us test rode BC before joining.

It gives people the opportunity to see what BC is all about.
I think we need some other ideas as to gain membership and things that will attract people and KEEP them here.
