Kicking off the bowl season is a reunion of former Western Athletic Conference rivals who haven’t met since 1998. They arrive in Albuquerque moving in opposite directions; the Cougars rebounded from a 1-4 start, and the Miners lost five of their last six. UTEP TB Donald Buckram was limited all season after a preseason ankle injury, so the bulk of the offense was carried by QB Trevor Vittatoe. He, too, has been slowed by an ankle problem but still has WR Kris Adams. A season-ending knee injury to BYU QB Riley Nelson left the offense in the hands of freshman Jake Heaps. The Cougars’ passing numbers are down a bit as a result, but TB JJ DiLuigi paces an effective ground game.
