It can work both ways. What if they didn't take the vote at season's end. And what if Beckett shit the bed. Should he be penalized because he had two bad outings in the playoffs. Should that overshadow a great season.
I believe your opinion would be different and Boston didn't make the playoffs. Should the voters not consider Beckett?
Should we discard all pitchers simply because their team didn't make the playoffs?
The Cy Young is awarded to the best PITCHER in each league. Not the best pitcher for the best teams.
Should the MVP be awarded to Manny because his team is still in the playoffs but Arod's Yanks were already eliminated. I guess Magglio Ordonez should get no consideration because the Tigers didn't make the playoffs.
And yes if Beckett shit the bed in the playoffs where the most meaningful games are being played, it should be held against him.
If neither Sabathia or Beckett was average or worse during the playoffs, then it might open the door for some other candidates on other teams.
In my opinion, the baseball season is about getting to the WS and winning it;if pitchers on a teams not in playoffs in eyes of voters are more derserving AFTER the playoffs, thats ok with me also.
What about a pitcher who was great during the first half os season but was lousy the second half as opposed to a pitcher who was lousy the first half but great the second half?
Do they have two separate categories? The answer is no, and a fair person would evaluate the pitcher in view of the ENTIRE season and what he contributed.
In this instance the circumstances are different but in my mind the principle the same.
ps Of course, as we all know, most people will vote for the person who contributed toward the end of the season as opposed to the first part of the seasson because it is fresh in their minds-the old "what have you done for me lately?"Last edited by savage1; 10-18-2007, 06:09 PM.

I would also say that perception or no perception, the pitcher who is considered to have at least a 50% chance of winning the Cy Young, should not under these circumstances be a dog at home especially with his team up 3-1 in games.
ps For the record I wouldn't trade Beckett for Sabathia, although I do think they are both very good pitchers-I am sure in all fairness a Cleveland fan wouldn't want to trade Sabathia for Beckett.

I think if Sabathia gets the Cy Young this year over Beckett, it will show unquestionably why some kind of point system should be instituted in post season so that performances like that of Beckett can be considered and factored in for the folks who vote(and yeah I would say the same if Beckett had pitched lousy during the playoffs).
In short,I believe that penalizing players by not considering their playoff stats just because their teams made it to the playoffs is a lot more unjust than the present thinking of not counting them because it allegedly penalizes pitchers whose teams do not make it the playoffs.Last edited by savage1; 10-25-2007, 12:56 AM.

I will go a step further and say that in practically all cases the Cy Young Award should come from one of the eight teams in the playoffs.
Making the playoffs is an achievement and should make a pitcher from one of those teams an award contender.
What better way to see how good the pitcher is than to see how he pitches in the most important and pressure filled games of the year!
Sabathia was so-so during the playoffs, whereas Beckett has been just perhaps a "wee bit" better.
I say it is an embarrassment to baseball to keep this antiquated system which doesn't tell the whole story.Last edited by savage1; 10-25-2007, 01:56 AM.

when steve carlton won 27 games for a 59 win team, he shouldn't have gotten the cy?

When someone like Carlton won 27 games, obviously no matter what someone else did in the playoffs, it would be hard to overcome what Carlton did.
The present system sort of reminds me in a sense of the Electoral College method of determining the President as opposed to popular vote-in short it is outdated and should be changed to reflect the fact that there are eight teams in the playoffs now(unlike in Carlton's day), meaning the chances are quite good that the best pitcher will be on one of those teams.
If he is not by some chance, then if he is really that good, that pitcher should be able to withstand what pitchers on playoffs team dp(there is no guarantee that contending pitchers on playoff teams will do well);in any case I think present system does not reflect reality-namely that performances of pitchers trying to obtain the ultimate prize, the World Series are being TOTALLY neglected.
