Good to be back; have a lot of people to thank, but I’ll do that down the road a little.

13) First of all, Dr Fauci says he has gotten death threats and his family has been harassed, because he is a scientist who tells the truth. What the actual bleep? Who threatens a scientist because he tells us how to avoid catching a virus that can kill us?

He isn’t a politician, he is a 78-year old doctor who has worked for six Presidents and has an impeccable record. Who would threaten him?

There are some very evil people in this country; they need to go back under their rock.

12) Had eye surgery Tuesday; the doctor says things went well, and in a few weeks I’ll have some new glasses and I’ll be seeing like my old self again. When you’re sitting by yourself in a reclining chair waiting to be operated on, some thoughts run through your head……

11) Nurses might be the most underrated people in our society; they help sick people get better, they do lot of the dirty work, while doctors make the bigger money. Yesterday I was reminded of when my dad was very ill 6-7 years ago, sitting in his room and watching the nurses do their jobs with (mostly) good cheer. A very honorable profession.

10) Kansas City Royals used 20 different pitchers in their first 11 games; rosters go down from 30 guys to 28 Thursday, so hopefully that means bullpens will be little thinner, and hitters can face the same pitchers more often, which will help to increase scoring.

9) ESPN’s Jon Sciambi came up with an interesting stat:
— In his 2,164 major league games, Lou Gehrig faced 342 different pitchers.
— In his 1,205 major league games, Mike Trout has faced 835 pitchers.

8) Last year, only 24% of starting pitchers threw 100+ pitches in their starts; ten years ago, half of major league starters threw 100+ pitches.

7) Why is Dodgers’ reliever Joe Kelly still pitching? He got suspended last week, then appealed- hear the damn appeal already!!! They can’t do that on a Zoom call?

6) There was a delay in the Pirates-Twins game Tuesday when a drone was hovering over Target Field; took 10-15 minutes for the thing to go away.

5) Fred VanVleet of the Raptors set a career high with 36 points the other night; weird thing is that in that whole game, he scored only one 2-point basket. He was 7-12 on the arc, 13-13 on the foul line, 1-4 inside the arc.

4) TJ Warren of the Indiana Pacers scored 117 points in three games down in the Orlando bubble; an impressive display of scoring.

3) Braves lost pitching ace Mike Soroka to a torn achilles tendon this week; difficult loss to overcome.

2) UConn is the first I-A college football team to cancel its football season for this year.

1) Some good COVID news; Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford had a false positive test last week, so he is healthy and good to go for training camp. Glad to hear he is healthy.

Aaron Judge has been on fire so far in the shortened season, with seven homers through 11 games. Judge and the Yankees are -151 favorites against the Phillies on Thursday night.

MLB betting odds hit the board and drew some early dollars for Thursday’s matchups. The Yankees wrap up their four-game home set against the Phillies, while the defending American League champion Astros aim to avoid falling back to .500.

Caesars sportsbooks provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Thursday’s contests.

Aaron Judge has already pounded out seven home runs through 11 games, helping the Yankees to a 9-2 start, including a split of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Phillies. New York opened -155 at Caesars books for a 6:05 p.m. ET first pitch, with Philadelphia +145 late Wednesday evening, and the line moved to -151/+141 within a few minutes.

The Astros gave up two touchdowns Wednesday in absorbing a 14-7 shelling from the Diamondbacks. For Thursday’s 7:07 p.m. ET start, Houston opened -133 and dropped to -123 within about an hour Wednesday night, with Arizona +113. And the always-popular Cubs, out of the gate with a 9-2 record, opened -170 and dialed back a tick to -166 against the struggling Royals (+153) in another 7:07 p.m. ET game.

In the Consensus, no team is getting more early love than the Cubs, landing 85 percent of the picks against the Royals. But the Yankees aren’t far behind at 82 percent against the Phillies.

Hitters slumping in MLB, cutdown day

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

OFF BASE

Star hitters Christian Yelich, Gary Sanchez, Hunter Pence and others are slumping badly in a season where hitters across the majors are struggling to find base hits. The league-wide batting average entering Wednesday's games was .232, down from .252 last year. It's the lowest mark ever, below the .237 average posted in 1968, despite the addition of the designated hitter to the NL.

CUTDOWN DAY

Cuts are coming for players around the majors as teams trim their active rosters from 30 players to 28, per plans agreed to by MLB and the union before the start of this virus-shortened 60-game season. The sides decided Tuesday that rosters will remain at 28 through the World Series, instead of dropping to 26 on Aug. 20 as initially planned.

SCHERZER AILING

The Nationals will see how Max Scherzer is feeling, a day after the three-time Cy Young Award winner exited a start after just one inning because of trouble with his right hamstring.

Scherzer threw 27 pitches against the Mets and labored, his fastball in the low 90s mph. He said his hamstring problem first showed up a week ago, went away, then showed up again Tuesday when he was sprinting.

The Nationals already are missing World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg, who has a nerve issue in his pitching hand.

NOBODY BETTER

Guess which team is tied for the best winning percentage in the majors? The Miami Marlins, that's who. The undermanned Marlins swept a seven-inning doubleheader Wednesday in Baltimore by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 to improve to 5-1 this season. They've won three straight against the Orioles since emerging from a coronavirus layoff that left them with a roster filled with call-ups, free agents and rookies. Miami allowed a total of one run and 10 hits in those three games at Camden Yards. Pretty impressive for a club that was inactive for eight days after 18 players tested positive for COVID-19. Miami, which lost 105 games last year, will try to keep it going against Baltimore as Don Mattingly looks for his 282nd win as Marlins manager, which would break a tie with Jack McKeon for the most in franchise history.

NICE START

Kenta Maeda (2-0, 1.64 ERA) will try to remain unbeaten since being traded from the Dodgers to Minnesota in the offseason. The 32-year-old right-hander has helped the Twins open up quick this year. He pitches at PNC Park, with Pirates rookie JT Brubaker making his first major league start. Minnesota has won six in a row to match the best start in franchise history at 10-2. Pittsburgh has lost seven straight and owns the worst record in the majors at 2-10.

CATCH-UP CARDS

The Cardinals expect to have another workout at Busch Stadium while getting ready to resume their virus-interrupted season. St. Louis hasn't played since June 29 -- at 2-3, its next game is scheduled for Friday night at home against the Cubs.

Quarantined in Milwaukee earlier this week after 13 positive COVID-19 tests in their traveling party -- All-Stars Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong among them -- the Cardinals returned to St. Louis on Wednesday and held a light workout.
