MLB public betting, line movement for August 5

The Padres will try to take two of three from the Dodgers with a win in Wednesday night's matchup. Caesars sportsbooks have Los Angeles a -127 favorite, with San Diego +117.

MLB betting odds hit the board and drew some early dollars for Wednesday’s slate. Among the highlights: a Dodgers-Padres tilt in the NL West, Max Scherzer taking the ball for the Nationals, and the Phillies and Yankees hoping to get in a doubleheader.

Caesars sportsbooks provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Wednesday’s contests.

MLB line movement

The Dodgers (8-4) and Padres (7-5) are both looking up at the Rockies (8-2) in the NL West. Los Angeles, which logged a 5-2 victory over San Diego on Tuesday, opened a -135 favorite with Ross Stripling taking the ball in a 9:10 p.m. ET start. The first move, however, was toward the host Padres, as the line shifted to L.A. -127/San Diego +117.

Scherzer and the Nationals opened -190 home favorites against the Mets and lengthened to -200 at Caesars, with New York +180 for a 6:05 p.m. ET game. The Phillies-Yankees doubleheader lines weren’t posted as of late Tuesday, with game times of 4:05 p.m. ET and 7:35 p.m. ET.

Consensus suggested early public support for the Dodgers, certainly no surprise. Los Angeles took 75 percent of picks made Tuesday night. In a mirror move on Covers Consensus, the Nationals drew 75 percent of Tuesday night's picks.

We enjoy some middle of the week MLB betting on Wednesday, with a schedule that features plenty of interleague action, including a doubleheader between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.

Here’s a handy MLB betting trend: heading into Wednesday's slate, games in which the American League and the National League do battle are 16-29-2 Over/Under so far in 2020 – a 64 percent winning clip for Unders in interleague contests.

Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners

The Mariners send ace Marco Gonzales to the bump to take on the Angels on Wednesday. The southpaw overcame a shaky 2020 debut with a solid 6 1-3 innings against this very same L.A. team on July 30, giving up only two earned runs on three hits while striking out six batters.

The Halos are dismal versus left-handed pitchers, hitting just .189 with 41 strikeouts over 132 at-bats so far this summer. Los Angeles may also be without DH Shohei Ohtani – or at least won’t have him at full strength – after he injured his elbow and was removed from all pitching duties.

Gonzales has owned Seattle’s AL West rivals, boasting a 6-1 record and 3.82 ERA in 13 career starts against Los Angeles, and we like the M’s to put the “money” in moneyline Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Seattle +110


Cincinnati Reds at Cleveland Indians

The Reds were one of the sneakiest wagers in the majors last season thanks to their unheralded success in first innings. Cincinnati averaged an MLB-best 0.81 runs in the opening inning – cashing in for those who love to bet first-inning props - which is saying something since the club plated just 4.33 runs per full nine innings on the year.

Cincy’s first-inning fires are starting to burn again after scoring a first-inning run in three of its past four games, including Tuesday’s matchup with Cleveland. The Reds are hitting .250 in the opening frame during that span with lead-off hitter Shogo Akiyama settling in, and Joey Votto and Mike Moustakas doing damage in the first.

Cleveland hands the ball to Mike Clevinger on Wednesday and the right-hander has been blown up in first innings this season. He gave up two runs in the first versus Kansas City on July 25 and three runs to Minnesota to start the game on July 31, logging a first-inning ERA of… oh dear god… 22.50 through his first two starts of 2020.

PREDICTION: Reds to score in first inning - YES (+280)


Toronto Blue Jays at Atlanta Braves

The Blue Jays are waiting for Hyun-Jin Ryu to show up for the 2020 season. The Korean left-hander has struggled in his opening two starts, touting an 8.00 ERA after getting knocked around for five runs on nine hits over 4 1-3 innings against Washington on July 30.

Granted, the Nationals hit .405 against southpaws this season – second-best in the majors – and Wednesday’s opponent, the Atlanta Braves, are whiffing with a .168 BA versus lefties. Ryu’s velocity is dwindling compared to 2019 but he still has nasty breaking balls.

The Braves counter with fellow lefty Sean Newcomb, who has actually performed worse than Ryu over his first efforts of 2020. Newcomb hasn’t lasted more than 4 1-3 innings and was rocked for six runs on six hits – including two home runs – versus the Mets on July 31. We like the discount on Ryu considering the company.

PREDICTION: Toronto +128
