    Elsewhere in the world……..
    7) Sunday’s Dodger-Arizona game was the first game this season with no walks; there were only five of those games all of last season.

    6) Jacksonville put QB Gardner Minshew on the COVID list, the 2nd starting QB (Matthew Stafford) to go on that list.

    5) Yoenis Cespedes opted out of the Mets’ season Sunday, but didn’t bother to tell anyone until midway thru the Mets’ game in Atlanta Sunday. What he does is his business, but how he did it leaves a little to be desired. He is a free agent this winter; this ain’t going to help him any.

    4) Let the record show that the Cincinnati Reds swept Detroit in the first regularly scheduled 7-inning doubleheader of this century.

Detroit reliever Tyler Alexander struck out nine batters in a row in the opener, tying an AL record.

    3) Saturday night, Mets’ TV analyst Keith Hernandez said he didn’t know what a “PB&J” is, which raised a lot of eyebrows on Twitter. How do you not know what a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is? Hernandez is a good analyst when he pays attention, but he often gets bored during games. He is way better in a 3-man booth, with Ron Darling as the other analyst.

    2) Going forward, how will teams in any sport judge this season? Will teams give a guy who has a bad year a mulligan, or if a guy comes out of nowhere and is excellent, are teams a little more skeptical than usual? Teams are going to take different approaches, for sure.

    1) A big question for the rest of baseball season; as teams fall out of contention, will the good players on bad teams finish their season?

MLB public line movement for August 3
      Patrick Everson

Gerrit Cole leads the Yankees in a Monday night game against the Phillies, who haven't played in a week due to COVID concerns. New York is a heavy -350 favorite at Caesars sportsbooks.

MLB betting odds are on the board and seeing some early action for the Monday slate. The Phillies finally return to the field, though as big road underdogs to the Yankees. There’s also an NL West battle between the Dodgers and the Padres, and it’s a Jacob deGrom Day.

Multiple oddsmakers provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Sunday’s contests. Covers will update this action report with MLB sharp picks vs. public bets and line movement throughout the day.

      MLB line movement

Caesars sportsbooks opened the Yankees hefty -350 favorites with Gerrit Cole on the mound. The Phillies, off for a week due to COVID concerns, are +300 pups with Jake Arrieta starting. Those prices held steady Sunday night for a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch.

Walker Buehler and the Dodgers opened -130 at Caesars, with the Padres a +120 underdog behind Chris Paddack. By late Sunday night, there was already a modest move toward visiting Los Angeles, with the line at -134/+124 for a 9:10 p.m. ET clash.

And the Mets, with deGrom taking the ball, opened -120 favorites on the road against the Braves (+110). There was no line movement Sunday night for the 7:10 p.m. ET meeting.

MLB picks and predictions for August 3
                    Rohit Ponnaiya

The Dodgers are 5-0 in their last five vs the Padres in San Diego, and lit Chris Paddack for 12 runs (nine earned) and four homers through 14 1/3 innings across three contests last year.

A new week of MLB betting begins on Monday headlined by a west coast battle between the NL World Series favorite Los Angeles Dodgers and the up-and-coming San Diego Padres.

We break down the baseball odds for this game and more as we bring you our best free MLB picks and predictions for August 3.

                    Cleveland Indians vs Cincinnati Reds

The first game of the day is an interleague matchup between Cincinnati and Cleveland. The Tribe haven't been able to hit the broad side of a barn this season, batting .206 and averaging the second-fewest runs per game in the majors at 2.78.

Thankfully for Cleveland fans they have Zach Plesac on the mound. Plesac had a solid rookie season in 2019 pitching to a 3.81 ERA and he started the year off throwing eight innings of shutout ball against the Chicago White Sox.

The Reds will hand the ball to Sonny Gray who had a breakthrough year last season going 11-8 with a 2.87 ERA and a BAA of .196. He's off to a sizzling start this year as well, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out 20 batters across 12 2-3 innings. Back the Under.

                    PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-120)

                    Oakland Athletics vs Seattle Mariners

Although the A's have struggled at the plate this season, they have more than enough talent in their lineup to snap out of it. At least on paper, the likes of Matt Chapman, Marcus Semien and Matt Olson are far superior to Seattle's lineup.

Oakland's sluggers should have an easier time against Mariners starter Justus Sheffield. He pitched to a 5.50 ERA across 36 innings last year, and give up four earned runs through three innings in his first start this year.

Frankie Montas will take the hill for the A's. Although Montas hasn't been quite as sharp this year as he was last season when he went 9-2 with a 2.63 ERA, he's still a much better option than Sheffield. Take Oakland on the run line.

PREDICTION: Run line Oakland A's (-115)

Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres

Both the Dodgers and Padres have aces on the mound for this contest between two NL West squads that are off to strong starts this season.

LA's Walker Buehler was limited to 56 pitches in his first start of this season he should be able to increase his workload on Monday. Buehler went 14-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 2019, and dominated the Padres going 2-0 against them while allowing just one run and striking out 26 batters in 15 innings.

Chris Paddack had an impressive rookie season last year but he roughed up in two of three starts vs. the Dodgers. Paddack allowed 12 runs (nine earned) and four homers through 14 1/3 innings across all three contests versus LA. With the Dodgers 5-0 against the Padres in the last five meetings in San Diego, back them on the first five innings run line.

PREDICTION: First Five Innings Dodgers -0.5 (-110)

                    Yesterday's MLB record: 1-2
Season MLB betting record: 17-12, +3.55 units

MLB betting card for August 3

Indians vs Reds Under 8.5 (-120)
                    Runline Oakland A's -1.5 (-115)
First Five Innings Dodgers -0.5 (-110)
