13) We start today with a hard-hitting news story; a guy in Las Vegas walked into an adult toy store, and walked out with a 3-foot-tall dildo that weighs 50 pounds. Didn’t pay, just grabbed it and walked out of the store. Hmmm……

The guy put the dildo in his car and took off; this is grand larceny— the dildo is apparently worth around $1,200. Who knew?

12) Couple of hours before the 2020 season started, major leagues announced that the playoffs would be expanded from 10 to 16 teams, for this year only.

Top two teams in all six divisions will make it, plus the next two best records in each league. There will be no first round byes, but in the first round, the #1 seed will have all the series games in their home ballpark.

11) Bronx 4, Washington 1 (5)— Rain-shortened season opener; neither team went to their bullpen. Giancarlo Stanton hit a 459-foot homer, Gerrit Cole won his New York debut.

Nationals’ star Juan Soto tested positive for the coronavirus, is out indefinitely.

10) Dodgers 8, Giants 1— Clayton Kershaw was a late scratch with a bad back; he is on the IL. Dustin May threw 4.1 innings as a late replacement.

Over last 13 years, San Francisco has started 13 different left fielders on Opening Day.

9) Here is how rosters work this year; for the first two weeks, each team will have 30 players, for the next two weeks, 28 players. Then it pares down to 26, which it would have been all season, had this been a normal season.

8) Ray Fosse mentioned on the A’s game the other night how Carl Yastrzemski played the entire 1970 All-Star game at first base. Thats the whole 12 innings.

Starters don’t do stuff like that anymore; now Yaztrzemski’s grandson Mike plays CF for the Giants- he hit .272 with 21 homers last year. Somehow, the Orioles gave up on them even though they were a terrible team, and the Giants pounced. He hit .272 with 21 homers LY.

7) Over/under in Las Vegas on Astros’ hitters being hit by pitches this year: 41.5.

6) Minnesota Twins have lost 16 consecutive playoff games, which is a record; last time they won a playoff game was in 2004.

5) Watching Padres-Angels exhibition game the other night, and there is a guy sitting by himself in the right field bleachers, going over notes. Only person in the stands.

Turns out it was Tony LaRussa, who works for the Angels now as a consultant.

4) Seattle’s new NHL team will be called the Kraken; they begin play in 2021-22.The kraken is a legendary cephalopod-like sea monster in Scandinavian folklore. A very large sea monster. The logo and colors looked pretty cool, at first glance.

3) Actors and their roles; there are 26 actors who have appeared in 6+ episodes of the Showtime series Billions, who also appeared in at least one episode of Law and Order. There are 16 other actors from Billions who appeared in either Law and Order: SVU, or Law and Order: Criminal Intent.

It is good to know people, make an impression; that’s how you you get hired for more jobs.

2) USC Trojans are 0-7 ATS in their last seven bowl games, even though they won three of those seven games. Last time USC covered a bowl game was in 2009, beating Boston College 24-13 (-7) in the Emerald Bowl.

1) NBA teams are scrimmaging for the next few days; real games start on Thursday. Was fun watching teams scrimmage, though they looked more like real games, seeing how they wore their real uniforms and all.

MLB public betting, line movement, sharp money for July 24

MLB betting odds are on the board for Opening Day Part II, with 14 games on the Friday slate. Among the highlights is an NL East clash between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, and the defending AL champion Houston Astros are in play, too.

PointsBet USA’s Patrick Eichner provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money, and public betting for three Friday matchups. Covers will update this action report with MLB sharp picks vs. public bets and line movement throughout the day Friday.

MLB line movement

The Mets, with Jacob deGrom taking the ball, opened -140 earlier this week at PointsBet USA and ticked up to -145 by Thursday night. Correspondingly, the Braves moved from +120 to +125 behind Mike Soroka.

In the Milwaukee Brewers-Chicago Cubs game, Chicago opened -120 and moved to -125, with Milwaukee going from even money to +105. And the Astros are hefty -310 home favorites, after opening -295, with the Seattle Mariners shifting from +225 to +240.

MLB sharp money

As of Thursday night at PointsBet USA, the only game seeing sharp bets among the aforementioned trio was Braves-Mets.
“We saw some sharp action come in on the Mets at -140,” Eichner said. “Good value for a deGrom start.”

MLB public betting

There’s noteworthy early public play on all three games at PointsBet USA.

“We’re seeing most of the public money come in on the Braves, Brewers and Astros,” Eichner said, noting moneyline ticket counts of 77 percent, 68 percent and 87 percent, respectively.

The Rogers Centre will remain empty this MLB season, as the Canadian government rejected the Toronto Blue Jays' bid to play their home games at home. Their search for a stadium continues.

As the Toronto Blue Jays scramble to find a home stadium, there’s been a varied response by way of MLB public betting and sharp money. Last week, the Canadian government denied the Blue Jays’ request to play their home games at Rogers Centre, the team’s home field, due to COVID-19 concerns relating to travel back-and-forth to the U.S.

SportsInteraction, a Canadian-based online book, definitely saw an effort to fade Blue Jays odds in multiple MLB betting markets. That’s led to some line movement and helped balance an onslaught of money from home-country fans.

Sharp bets fade Blue Jays

"We've seen a massive hit on the Under,” SportsInteraction head of trading Phill Gray told Covers on Thursday, alluding to Toronto’s season win total of 28.5. “And the lack of a real home is driving action in the outrights to their rivals, offsetting the huge liability that's been set (this year), given the optimism around this young team of future stars."

For the moment, SportsInteraction has taken down the Blue Jays’ season win total, along with futures on the AL East, AL championship and World Series.

Public betting on Blue Jays

The Jays’ current lack of a home field doesn’t mean all bettors are fading the squad. PointsBet USA director of communications Patrick Eichner said that, although Toronto’s season win total is currently off the board, the Jays are seeing money in other markets.

“The Blue Jays are still a hot underdog-type ticket,” Eichner said, noting the Jays are drawing dollars to win the AL East in moving from a hefty +3,000 to +2,500 – still fourth among the four teams – as well as some fliers to win the World Series at +8,000. “It’s an attractive price, and there’s a chance to catch fire with a lot of young, exciting players. They aren’t quite as much of a public darling as the White Sox and Reds, but they are close.”

Toronto opens the season with five straight road games – a three-game set beginning Friday against the Rays, followed by two against the Nationals. Then the Blue Jays are due to host Washington next Wednesday and Thursday. Nobody is yet certain where those games will be played, though they’ll need to be in the U.S., based on the Canadian government’s decision.
