    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    More NFL Week 1 spreads:

    — Chiefs (-3.5, 52.5) @ Jaguars

    — Titans @ Browns (-5.5, 45.5)

    — Rams (-3, 51) @ Panthers

    — Lions (-2.5, 47) @ Cardinals

    — Bengals @ Seahawks (-9.5, 43.5)

    — Colts @ Chargers (-3, 47.5)

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) We mentioned last week how Ronald Acuna hit a ball off the wall against the Mets but only got a single out of it, because he thought it was a homer and jogged to first base. Well, it happened again Sunday, and this time the Braves took action.

Acuna singled in the third inning Sunday but it should’ve been a double, and he was pulled from the game against the Dodgers with Atlanta trailing 3-1.

    12) Antonio Brown wasn’t at Raiders practice Sunday because he is upset that the NFL hasn’t approved his helmet; Oakland’s front office appears to be running out of patience with Brown.

Steelers took a $21M salary cap hit last winter to dump Brown for two mid-level draft picks, and now it is very clear why.

    11) Sounds like Case Keenum will be Washington’s starting QB on September 8th, with Colt McCoy not 100% and Dwayne Haskins being a rookie.

    Here is Keenum’s career path:
2012-14— Went 4-8 as a starter with Houston.
2015-16— Went 7-7 as a starter for the Rams, was replaced by Jared Goff.
2017— Went 11-3 as the starter for Minnesota, split two playoff games.
2018— Went 6-10 as the starter for Denver.
2019— Starter for Washington; will eventually be replaced by Haskins.

Coming into this year, Keenum has earned roughly $22M in salary, so despite his getting the short end of the stick in terms of regular employment, his bank account is doing just fine.

    10) To make room for Josh Gordon, New England cut WR Dontrelle Inman, who three years ago caught 58 balls for 810 yards and four TD’s when he played for the Chargers. Am guessing that Inman won’t be out of work too long.

    9) Didn’t realize that Rams-Cowboys tilt Saturday night was the first NFL preseason game in Hawai’i since 1976. They had the Pro Bowl in Hawai’i most years, but this was better than those.

    8) Phil Mickelson shot 71 Sunday, finished T48 at the BMW tournament, after the hotel he was staying in was struck by lightning and caught on fire Sunday morning.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Reds put 1B Joey Votto (back) on the IL.
    — Colorado P Scott Oberg (blood clot in arm) is out for the year.
    — Nationals put P Sean Doolittle (knee) on the IL.
    — Bryce Harper (dehydration) left the Phillies’ game after the 5th inning.

    6) Red Sox P Chris Sale is visiting Dr James Andrews today for a second opinion, which is rarely good news, not that Dr Andrews isn’t a good guy. Pitchers who visit the good doctor often get their arms operated on shortly thereafter.

    5) Indians’ ace Corey Kluber hasn’t pitched in the majors since May 1; be broke his forearm. His third rehab start was cut off after one inning Sunday, because of abdominal tightness that the team trainers did not want him attempting to pitch through. Not a good sign.

    4) Liberty football coach (former Ole Miss coach) Hugh Freeze had surgery on Friday to address a potentially life-threatening strand of staph infection; he’s missed a week of fall camp already. Doctors say if his conditioned hadn’t been addressed, the infection could’ve reached his heart and that wouldn’t have been good, but now he is expected to fully recover.

    3) From the New York Post: A South Dakota woman who recently gave birth to triplets said she didn’t discover she was pregnant until she went to the hospital with what she thought were kidney stones.

The woman has two other children, but still didn’t know she was pregnant; the triplets’ names are Blaze, Gypsy and Nikki.

    2) Sunday was a strong day for celebrity birthdays: Roberto Clemente, Robert Redford, Patrick Swayze, Denis Leary, Edward Norton (Worm in Rounders), Christian Slater, Martin Mull and Shelley Winters.

    1) RIP to former NFL running back Cedric Benson, 36, who died in a motorcycle accident this weekend. Benson was the #4 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, played eight years in the league, and has the 6th-most rushing yards in I-A college football history.

RIP Jack Whitaker, 95, who passed away Sunday. When I was a little kid, he was host of the NFL studio show on CBS. I’m pretty sure he is the person who introduced the term “sack” on a pregame segment for CBS. He was also a World War II veteran. RIP, sir,

        Ballpark Figures - Week 22
        Joe Williams

        Beer Battle

The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals will renew acquaintances at Busch Stadium II on Monday night, jockeying for positioning in the ultra-competitive National League Central Division. RHP Zach Davies and RHP Dakota Hudson will take the ball for their respective teams in this one. Surprisingly, these teams haven’t met since April 22-24 back in St. Louis when the Cardinals pulled off a three-game sweep, outscoring the Brew Crew by a 22-10 count. Davies pitched Game 2 of that series, a 4-3 victory over RHP Daniel Ponce De Leon. The ‘under’ connected in two of those three outings, too.

As far as Hudson is concerned, the Cardinals are 0-2 in his two outings this season against the Brewers, and St. Louis is just 5-5 in the first 10 meetings overall. Looking at the head-to-head results, there isn’t a lot to glean as far as lean. Hey, that matches! The ‘over’ is 5-4-1 in the first 10 battles this season between the two organizations. However, look to recent trends for both clubs to figure it out. Milwaukee is just 6-13 in the past 19 in Game 1 of a new series, and 1-6 in the past seven road games against a team with a winning overall mark. They’re also 4-12 in the past 16 starts by Davies against teams with a winning record, including 3-7 in his past 10 on the road against winning sides.

As far as the Cards are concerned, they have cashed in four straight games at home while winning seven of the past nine games overall. They’re also 16-5 in the past 21 games inside the division, while hitting in seven of the past 10 in Game 1 of a new series. In addition, St. Louis has won eight of the past 11 at home vs. RHP, and they’re 5-2 in the past seven overall against righties.

The Cards are also happy to see Hudson toeing the slab, as they have gone 13-3 across his past 16 starts while cashing in five of his past six games overall. They’re also a perfect 4-0 across his past four outings against NL Central foes.

Total bettors will be interested to know that while the over is 6-1 in the past seven for Milwaukee, and 4-1 in his past five against winning teams, the under is 12-2 in Davies’ past 14 outings on the road against winning sides, while going 20-5-1 in his past 26 against teams with a winning overall mark. The under is also 33-15-3 in his past 51 starts overall, and 18-7-1 in the past 26 on the road while going 8-3-1 in the past 11 in Game 1 of a new set. For the Cards, the under 25-7 in the past 32 at Busch while going 7-2-2 in the past 11 inside the Central. The under has cashed in four of the past five outings for Hudson, while going 6-0 in his past six at home.

        Looking Ahead

        Monday, Aug. 19

The San Diego Padres square off with the Cincinnati Reds in the Queen City, and it’s a tremendous pitching matchup in the opener. LHP Eric Lauer will face RHP Trevor Bauer at Great American Ball Park in a battle of 58-65 clubs.

The Padres have managed to win just three of their past 13 in Game 1 of a new series, while going 5-11 in the past 16 on the road against teams with a losing record. They are 5-2 in the past seven starts by Lauer when working on five days of rest, but they’re 10-4 in the past 14 starts during Game 1 of a new series. They’re just 1-4 in his past five on the road against losing teams, too.

Cincinnati has managed just two victories across the past eight games overall, while winning jst once in the past five against southpaws. However, Cincinnati is an impressive 7-3 in the past 10 following a loss while going 6-1 in the past seven against losing teams. They also do not have a case of the Monday, going 4-1 in the past five on the day. Cincinnati has also won five of the past seven in this series, while the over is 7-1 in the past eight meetings at GABP, although the under is 4-0 in the past four in this series.

        Weather Report
The weather forecast is brilliant for Monday. The winds will be light and variable at all outdoor MLB venues with small chance of precipitation. Enjoy the worry-free day.

        Tuesday, Aug. 20

RHP Shane Bieber, the All-Star Game MVP, takes the ball from manager Terry Francona for Tuesday’s interleague series opener against LHP Steven Matz and the Mets.

Bieber has managed a 12-5 record, 3.27 ERA and .263 opponent on-base percentage with 200 strikeouts across 162 1/3 innings over 25 starts and one relief appearance this season. The Indians have cashed in seven of his past nine outings, and the ‘under’ is a perfect 5-0 over his past five outings while going 3-0-1 in his past four starts on the road. The Mets counter with Matz, who enters 7-7 with a 4.33 ERA and 109 strikeouts over 116 1/3 innings. While Matz has just so-so numbers overall, he is super at Citi Field. Matz is a perfect 5-0 with a 2.14 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP across 54 2/3 innings at home this season.

Cleveland is 7-1 over their past eight interleague road outings, and 16-5 in the past 21 road games overall. They’re also 17-5 in Bieber’s past 22 assignments away from home, while going 5-2 in the past seven road games vs. LHP. New York has ticked off 10 wins in the past 11 at home while going 7-1 in the past eight interleague battles, and they’re 22-5 in the past 27 vs. LHP while going 6-0 in the past six interleague games at home. However, they’re just 1-5 in Matz’s past six interleague assignments, and 1-5 in his past six against winning teams, too, while going 3-7 in his past 10 starts overall.

The lowly Detroit Tigers will face the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. New Astros pitcher RHP Aaron Sanchez will make his fourth start with the organization. After allowed just one earned run and three hits over 11 innings in his first two starts with the club he came crashing back to Earth last time out. Sanchez was smacked for six earned runs, seven hits and two walks while serving up four homers in Oakland on Aug. 15. The Astros are 2-1 across his first three starts with the organization.

The Tigers haven’t been as fortunate during RHP Spencer Turnbull’s turns in the rotation. Detroit is just 3-13 over his past 16 starts, 0-4 in his past four on the road and they’re 0-5 in his past five against winning teams while going 0-6 in his past six working on four days of rest. Detroit has also won a mere nine games across the past 51 against a right-handed starting pitcher while cashing in just 15 of the past 51 on the road. Houston is also a perfect 6-0 in the past six against Detroit, and 6-2 in the past eight meetings at the Juice Box.

        Weather Report
For the second straight day it appears Mother Nature will cooperate with a lack of precipitation and light and variable winds which will not affect the flight of balls. If there is one trouble spot, it might be Baltimore, while the Royals and Orioles face a 25 percent chance of rain. Even that’s a pretty favorable forecast, however. The bigger concern in Charm City might be the feels-like temperature approaching triple digits.

                          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                          STREAKING

Ivan Nova, Chicago White Sox (8-9, 4.51 ERA, $956):
Wait a minute, this has got to be typo right? Nova has been the slumping pitcher in this column more than a few times this year but now he's so hot he's gone Super Nova.

The White Sox righty is coming off a gem of an outing against the Astros where he pitched nine shutout innings in a 4-1 White Sox victory. In his last five starts Nova is 4-0 with a 0.49 ERA and 0.70 WHIP, amazing numbers for any pitcher let alone someone who had an ERA well over 6.00 at the middle of June.

Nova and the White Sox are big +180 underdogs tonight versus the Twins, with the O/U installed at 10. With Nova's current form the underdog play and the Under might be worth a look.

                          SLUMPING

Trevor Williams, Pittsburgh Pirates (5-5, 5.25 ERA, $404):
After a strong 2018 campaign, the Pirates right-hander has been a huge disappointment this year allowing opponents to bat .283 against him and logging a WHIP of 1.39. He's coming off back to back disastrous outings; giving up seven hits, five walks and five earned runs in five innings against the Angels, and getting wrecked for six runs in five innings versus the Brewers.

The Pirates will start Williams for today's home game against the Nationals. The Nats have averaged a ridiculous 12.25 runs per game over their last four contests while Pittsburgh has been the best Over bet in the majors at home going 36-18 O/U at PNC Park. The total is 9.5 while Pittsburgh is a +105 'dog.

                          3 STRIKES

                          RARE BIRD

For just the fifth time this season the Baltimore Orioles are favorites. The O's will be hosting the Kansas City Royals and will have one of their best pitchers on the mound in left John Means. Means is 8-8 with a 3.76 ERA but has struggled in his last five starts going 1-4 with a 8.34 ERA.

The Royals will start Jorge Lopez who is 1-7 with a 6.51 ERA and BAA of .289. Somebody has got to win though and given recent history the home side might have the edge. The Orioles are 9-1 in the last 10 meetings between these sides in Baltimore.

The Astros are whopping -384 faves for tonight's home game against the Tigers. Detroit has the worst record in the majors at 37-84 while the 'Stros are an AL-best 43-15 at home. Houston will start Wade Miley who is 11-4 with a 3.11 ERA and the lefty has been even better at home going 5-1 with a 2.02 ERA and a BAA of .187.

If you're looking to find value betting on this matchup you might have to get creative. Taking Houston on the alternate runline of -2.5 pays out at -115 on BetAmerica while the seven innings runline of -1.5 pays out at -135.

                          RHYME TIME

It's Eric Lauer versus Trevor Bauer in Cincinnati as the Reds host the Padres. Bauer (10-9, 4.12 ERA) is coming off a terrible start against the Nationals where he gave up nine runs in just over four innings, but prior to that he pitched a gem against the Cubs. Lauer is 6-8 with a 4.55 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a BAA of .279.

The Padres are coming off a win but might be due for a let down since they are just 3-10 in their previous 13 games after a victory. The Reds are coming off a loss but are 7-3 in their last 10 games following a defeat. Cincy is a -155 home favorite with the O/U installed at 9.

The Reds and Padres have played four times this season, cashing in on the Under each game despite the O/U never being higher than 8.
