    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

    — Lakers 99, Kings 97— LA was down 21 points in 4th quarter.

    — White Sox 7, Tigers 5— Dylan Cease wins his MLB debut.

    — Stephen Strasburg struck out the side on nine pitches in 3rd inning last night.

    — Brewers’ OF Ben Gamel learned to hit a baseball by hitting wine corks with a broom handle.

    — There is a high school gym in Indiana where one side of the halfcourt line is in Indiana, the other side is in Ohio. Seriously.

    — USC is going to pay $50M and apologize to UC San Diego for poaching its Alzheimer’s research program. Our world is slowly going crazy.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's Den; Happy 4th of July, everyone……

    13) If you know a kid who plays high school or college basketball who is really good and who dreams of making it to the NBA, make sure he watches some summer league basketball over the next couple weeks.

Lot of guys who were GREAT high school players, really, really good college players, all fighting like hell just to make an NBA roster. It ain’t easy, only the very best make it.

After the kid watches ball for a while, have him go out and practice his butt off; thats the only way to become a great player, to really work at it.

    12) Speaking of which, golfer Nick Faldo said recently that when he changed his swing as a pro, he hit 1,500 balls a day to get his swing right. Thats about 38 buckets of balls. Every day.

    11) If you’re going to be in Las Vegas and are interested in betting on summer league games, remember that teams need to find out what their players are capable of- the same guys aren’t going to play the same amount of minutes every game.

I’ve told this story before, how I sat behind a guy at a game a few years ago, and he was 100% sure he had a great bet, because Team A had won by 20 the day before and now today’s line was kind of low. Well, that was because Team A sat most of their better players, so they could take a look at the back end of their roster- they lost by 15.

That guy was not happy. Don’t be that guy.

    10) Chicago Cubs have lost 15 of their last 19 road games; Joe Maddon is in the last year of his contract, things have to be a little tense in the Windy City. Cubs are only 45-42; first place is only 5.5 games ahead of last place in the NL Central.

    9) Looking at SEC football teams are I begin prepping for this fall:
    — Auburn’s offensive line has 104 returning starts, but is starting a new QB.
    — Florida has a QB with 21 career starts, but its whole OL has a combined 24 starts.
    — Mississippi State’s OL has 71 returning starts, but none of their QB’s have started a game.
    — Missouri, Georgia, LSU have the best combination of experience at QB, offensive line.

    8) This is why rookie head coaches need an experienced head coach on their staff:

Michigan’s new basketball coach Juwan Howard was asked on a radio show about recruit Franz Wagner, the younger brother of former Wolverines star Moritz Wagner. Franz Wagner is uncommitted, and could stay overseas and play pro ball instead of playing college ball.

Howard speaking publicly about the young man’s future recruiting decision is technically an NCAA violation, albeit a minor one. I’m guessing Howard got some advice from new assistant Phil Martelli when this hit the fan.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Twins put P Jake Odorizzi (blister) on the IL.

    6) Coby Karl is coaching the Lakers’ summer league team; he is the son of former NBA coach George Karl who happily beat some health problems he had a few years ago. Good for him.

    5) Bad news if you have Wilson Ramos on your fantasy team; Jason deGrom, Noah Syndergaard both want Tomas Nido as their personal catcher.

Mets need the DH to come to the National League as soon as possible.

    4) OK, I get confused when NBA teams trade for a player, then buyout the guy’s contract and he goes to a better team as a free agent. They do it for salary cap reasons, but to sign who? Teams like the Suns are always going to suck unless they get some good players who actually stay there and play.

    3) Back in the 90’s, Pat Riley wrote a book called The Winner Within; it dealt with stages of team building. One of the stages was called “The Disease of Me” which is when people who are a part of the team start to think they’re “THE reason” a team wins, rather than “A reason”

NBA free agency reminds me of this, players scattering to get paid and the whole league re-booting. When the dust clears in August, we’ll look at which rosters got better/worse, but all 30 teams re-boot this summer, with teams near the top of the league re-booting the most.

    2) RIP to former Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen, who passed away way too young this week at age 38; he appeared in four NFL games as a backup with the Giants, threw for 10,354 yards and 78 TD’s at Kentucky. RIP, sir.

    1) When Virginia Tech lost basketball coach Buzz Williams to Texas A&M, they also lost almost all their players; all four of their incoming recruits jumped ship (three went with Williams to A&M), plus three of their seven returning players entered the transfer portal.

Former Wofford coach Mike Young will be a first-time ACC coach at age 56; the Hokies saw their top five scorers leave, five kids that accounted for 90% of Tech’s scoring and 73% of its rebounding in 2018-19. Young will have his hands full, for sure.

      Weekly Total Talk
      Joe Williams

      Ray Of Hope

The over is the play when the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays hook up in St. Petersburg. The over has connected in each of the past four games against teams with a winning record, and the over is a whopping 36-13-2 in the past 51 road games for the Yankees. In addition, the over is 18-7-1 in the past 26 on the road against winning teams, 5-1 in the past six against divisional foes and 15-7 in the past 22 overall. However, LHP JA Happ puts that to the test, as the under is 4-1-1 in the past six starts overall, and 5-1 in his past six outings against an American League East opponent.

For the Rays, the over is 2-0-2 in the past four games overall, and 2-0-2 in the past four home games, too. The over is also 3-0-1 in the past four inside the division while going 8-3-2 in Tampa Bay's past 13 games against teams with a winning percentage over .600. As far as Yonny Chirinos is concerned, the under is 5-0-1 in the past six games overll, and 5-0-1 in his past six against teams with a winning overall record, too. However, in this series, the over is 5-0-1 in the past six battles at Tropicana Field.

      Looking Ahead

      Thursday, July 4

The Phillies and Braves play in the third game of a three-game set at SunTrust Park in Atlanta. The over has connected in six of the past eight road games against teams with a winning record for Philadelphia. The over is also 8-3 in their past 11 overall against winning teams, and 7-3-1 in the past 11 road games vs. RHP. The over is also 3-1-1 in RHP Zach Eflin's past five against winning teams. Fort he Braves, the over is 11-2-1 in the past 14 home games vs. RHP, while going 4-1-1 in RHP Mike Soroka's past six outings. The under is 7-2-1 in Atlanta's past 10, however, and 5-0 in Soroka's past five starts against a team with a winning record.

RHP Dinelson Lamet returns from the 10-day injured list for the Padres, and he will face LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu of the Dodgers. The over is 2-0-2 in San Diego's past four road outings, while cashing in each of their past seven divisional games. The over is also 18-7-5 in the past 30 games overall for the Padres, and 7-3 in the past 10 road games vs. LHP. While the under is 5-2 in the past seven for Lamet, and 5-2 in his past seven starts against winning teams, he might not go terribly deep in this one, so the total will depend on the bullpen. The over is 5-1-1 in L.A.'s past seven games overall, and 7-1-2 in their past 10 vs. RHP. The over is also a perfect 6-0 in the past six against teams with a losing overall mark. In this series, the over is 8-2-1 in the past 11 meetings, and 12-3-1 in the past 16 in L.A.

      Wind Report
Winds will be rather variable across all MLB venues with the exception of one stadium. The Angels and Rangers wrap up their three-game set on Thursday in Arlington. The winds will be gusting in from 10-13 mph from right field into the face of the batters.

      Friday, July 5

The Phillies and Mets kick off a new series at Citi Field with RHP Vince Velasequez agaisnt RHP Jacob deGrom. It's been all under all the time for Velasquez. The under is 8-1 in the past nine starts overall, while going 5-1 in his past six road outings. The under is also 5-1 in his past six against NL East clubs, and 5-0 in his past five starts against a losing team. For the Mets, the under is 3-0-2 in their past five against right-handed starting pitching heading into Thursday's game. The over is 16-6-4 in the past 26 for the Mets after a scheduled day off, and 8-3-2 in the past 13 against NL East foes. The over is 6-2-1 in deGrom's past nine starts overall, while going 3-0-1 in deGrom's past four against NL East teams.

The Marlins and Braves open a new series in Atlanta. RHP Jordan Yamamoto and RHP Julio Teheran will lock horns at SunTrust Park in the opener. The under is 8-2 in the past 10 road games, and 8-2 in their past 10 on the road against teams with a winning home record. The under is also 7-2 in the past nine on the road vs. RHP. The under is 7-2-1 in the past 10 games overall, but the over is 15-5-1 in their past 21 at home heading into Thursday's battle. For Teheran, the over is 4-0 in his past four at home, 4-0 in his past four at home against teams with a losing record, and 8-3 in his past 11 when working on five days of rest. The over is also 5-1 in Teheran's past six home outings against the Marlins.

LHP Eric Lauer of the Padres squares off against LHP Clayton Kershaw, who is looking to bounce back after a loss at Coors Field against the Rockies last time out. The over is an impressive 5-1-2 in the past eight road outings by Lauer, and 5-2 in his past seven inside the division. However, the under is 6-2-2 in the past 10 starts against a team with a winning overall record, and 5-2-1 in the past eight starts overall. The over is 5-1 across Kershaw's past six outings at Chavez Ravine, and 7-3 in his past 10 starts overall. The over is also 9-2-1 in his past 12 starts against teams with a losing overall mark, too.

      Wind Report
All outdoor venues on Friday will face winds of 9 mph or less. Perhaps the only place winds will play a factor will be the Cardinals-Giants battle at Oracle Park, with winds blowing 8-11 mph to the left-center field power alley.

                  STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                  STREAKING

                  Lance Lynn, Texas Rangers (10-4, 4.00 ERA, $588 ):
Lynn has been flying under the radar despite a solid season. He's been even better recently, going 4-0 with a 2.90 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over his last six starts.

Tonight he'll face off against Griffin Canning (and likely Felix Pena in the middle innings) and the Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers are -134 faves with the O/U set at 11. The Rangers are 7-1 in Lynn's last eight starts on the road, and the Under has cashed in seven of Lynn's last eight starts overall.

                  SLUMPING

Jordan Lyles, Pittsburgh Pirates (5-4, 3.71 ERA, $475):
Midway through May, Lyles was one of the top pitchers in the majors with a 4-1 record and 1.97 ERA. Since then he's gone 1-3 over five starts with a 6.93 ERA and 1.54 WHIP, while also missing time with a hamstring injury.

Today, Lyle and the Pirates host the Cubs who are just 16-26 on the road. Despite losing the first three games in this series, Chicago is a -125 favorite with Jose Quintana (5-7, 4.21 ERA) getting the start.

                  THREE STRIKES

EARLY START IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL

The 11:00 am game between the Marlins and Nationals features plenty of Under trends. The Under is 8-2 in the Marlins last 10 road games and 4-1-1 in pitcher Elieser Hernandez's last six starts. The Under has also cashed in four of the Nationals last five games and their starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez has a 2.21 ERA over his previous seven starts.

With the Under also hitting in four of the last five games between these two teams in Washington, the Under 10 is worth a look.

                  THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM?

The Brewers are coming off a 3-0 loss to the Reds and are 1-4 in thier last five games on the road, but they're -130 favorites today in Cincinnati despite facing off against Reds ace Luis Castillo.

There are a few good reasons for that. The Brewers will have Brandon Woodruff on the mound and they are 11-1 over his last 12 starts. Milwaukee is also 6-1 in the last seven meetings between these teams in Cincy. And here's the kicker: While Castillo has been excellent on the season going 7-3 with a 2.47 ERA, his two worst starts of the year both came against the Brew Crew. Over those two games, Castillo gave up eight runs over 6 2-3 innings.

                  HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

The Braves are 11-3 in their last 14 home games and will have rookie Mike Soroka on the mound to face the visiting Phillies. Soroka is 5-0 with a 1.29 ERA and .171 BAA in eight starts at home.

Philadelphia will start Zach Eflin but they are just 2-6 in his last eight starts and are 2-7 over their last nine games on the road. The Phillies are also 2-8 in their last ten games in Atlanta. The Braves are -155 favorites with the total installed at 10.5.

                    Thursday's Tip Sheet
                    Kevin Rogers

Phillies at Braves – 7:20 PM EST

The top two teams in the National League East finish up their three-game series at SunTrust Park this evening after splitting the first two contests. Philadelphia (45-41) blanked Atlanta in the series opener on Monday, 2-0 behind Aaron Nola’s eight-inning scoreless gem to improve to 6-2 in the previous eight games.

However, Atlanta (51-36) rebounded last night by pounding Philadelphia, 9-2 as -135 favorites behind a six-run sixth inning. Austin Riley and Matt Joyce each went deep in that sixth inning explosion to help right-hander Bryse Wilson pick up his first win of the season. The Braves have won three of the past five matchups with the Phillies since getting swept at Citizens Bank Park to begin the season.

The Braves send out right-hander Mike Soroka (9-1, 2.13 ERA), who has been the anchor of the Atlanta rotation this season. Atlanta has won six consecutive starts made by Soroka since the start of June, including the last two on the road against division opponents. Soroka lasted only two innings in a 4-3 win at Washington on June 23 as the Alberta native exited with a right forearm contusion.

Soroka rebounded in his next start against the Mets last Friday night opposite Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom by tossing 6.1 innings and allowing two runs in a 6-2 victory. The Braves cashed as a +130 underdog, while Atlanta improved to 6-2 in Soroka’s eight road starts. Soroka has not faced the Phillies this season, as the Braves are riding a six-game winning streak in his past six starts at SunTrust Park.

Zach Eflin (7-7, 3.34 ERA) has produced a victory only twice in his last eight starts for the Phillies, although the right-hander has compiled five quality outings in this span. Elfin was on track for a win his previous start at Miami last Saturday as the Phillies built a 6-1 advantage through five innings. However, the Marlins outscored the Phillies, 8-0 in the final four innings as the Philadelphia bullpen couldn’t hold on by allowing six runs.

Eflin has pitched at least six innings in four of the last five starts, but the Phillies are 0-4 in his previous four outings away from Citizens Bank Park. The Orlando native hasn’t seen the Braves this season, but Eflin did beat Atlanta in his most recent meeting back in August of 2017 as a +155 underdog, 5-2. The Phillies have lost four of their past six road series finales, including a 15-1 drubbing at Atlanta back on June 16.

Angels at Rangers – 8:05 PM EST

Los Angeles (44-43) received the tragic news on Monday afternoon that starting pitcher Tyler Skaggs passed away in his hotel room at the age of 27. The Angels have stepped up for their fallen teammate in their first two games in Arlington with a pair of victories over Texas (46-40). Los Angeles won the series opener on Tuesday, 9-4 as a +125 underdog, assisted by six unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings after trailing, 2-1.

The Halos dropped a four-spot in the third inning of Wednesday’s 6-2 triumph as star center fielder Mike Trout drilled a pair of home runs. The Angels’ bullpen tossed four perfect innings following Jaime Barria’s five-inning effort in which the right-hander struck out eight batters for his third win of the season. The Rangers captured four straight meetings with the Angels in mid-April and early May before the Angels have run off four consecutive wins over their division rivals.

The Rangers had a six-game winning streak snapped last Saturday at Tampa Bay as Texas is currently on a four-game slide. Lance Lynn (10-4, 4.00 ERA) is putting together a solid campaign in his first season with the Rangers, fresh off three consecutive victories. The right-hander has compiled quality starts in nine of his past 10 trips to the mound, including tossing eight scoreless innings and striking out 10 batters in a 5-0 shutout of the Rays last Friday. Lynn defeated the Angels in his last matchup with them on April 17 by a 5-4 score as the Rangers look to improve on a 7-1 home record with the former Ole Miss product on the hill.

Griffin Canning (3-4, 3.79 ERA) snapped a two-start skid in his previous start as the Angels’ right-hander allowed two runs in six innings of an 8-3 rout of Oakland last Thursday. The Angels have lost three of Canning’s four last five road starts, while receiving a no-decision against the Rangers as a -160 home favorite in a 4-3 defeat on May 24. Canning scattered three hits and one run in five innings as he left the game with a 3-1 advantage before the Rangers rallied for three runs.

Padres at Dodgers – 9:10 PM EST

San Diego (42-44) has been the ultimate roller-coaster team of Major League Baseball this season. The Padres have no doubt improved with the signing of All-Star Manny Machado in the offseason, but consistency has been San Diego’s biggest issue. In late June, the Padres pulled off a three-game home sweep of the NL Central-leading Brewers, followed by dropping all three contests at Pittsburgh.

Most recently, the Padres took care of the Cardinals in the first two games of their series at Petco Park last weekend before squandering a 3-0 lead in an extra-innings defeat in the Sunday matchup. San Diego then laid an egg in three home losses to a surging San Francisco squad, as the Giants dropped 30 runs for a three-game sweep of their division rivals.

Things won’t get easier this weekend for the Padres, who take the short trip to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers (59-29), who are knocking on the door of win number 60 this evening. The Dodgers pulled off a sweep of a two-game set of the Diamondbacks last night with a 5-4 triumph for the second consecutive night. L.A. tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the ninth inning before walking it off in the 10th inning on Cody Bellinger’s second home run of the night.

Although Clayton Kershaw is the ace of the Dodgers’ staff, fellow left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (9-2, 1.83 ERA) has turned into a terrific second option by putting together a career season. Ryu went through a nine-start stretch by allowing four earned runs before getting tagged for seven earned runs in four innings of a 13-9 setback at Colorado his last time out. The Dodgers are unbeaten in Ryu’s eight home starts this season, while the southpaw owns a miniscule 0.94 ERA at Chavez Ravine.

The Padres will counter with right-hander Dinelson Lamet, who makes his first start of the season. Lamet returns from Tommy John surgery after missing all of 2018 for San Diego. The Dominican Republic native closed out 2017 without a victory in his final seven starts, while posting a 7-8 record and 4.57 ERA that season. Lamet struck out 10 batters in six innings of a 1-0 defeat to the Dodgers at Petco Park on September 1, 2017, but gave up four runs in five innings of a 9-2 setback at Dodger Stadium in his final start of that season.

The Dodgers have won four of the first five meetings with the Padres this season, while Los Angeles owns a 9-2 record in its past 11 home matchups with San Diego since the start of 2018.
