    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    — How is Matt Chapman not in the top 3 in All-Star voting at 3B in AL?

    — Why don’t home plate umps wear protection on their wrists/forearms?

    — Tampa Bay opener Stanek allowed a run in 5 of his last 7 opens.

    — Pirates 11, Padres 10 (11)— San Diego blew 3-run leads in 9th, 11th innings.

    — Other than Lucas Giolito, White Sox starting pitchers have a 6.26 ERA this year.

    — Since the start of last season, Jacob deGrom has a 2.18 ERA in 48 starts, but the Mets have a 19-29 record in those 48 games.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……..

    13) Say you’re sitting in the outfield bleachers at a major league game; Mike Trout or Cody Bellinger hits a homer and you catch it, but they play for the visiting team. Do you listen to the nitwits around you and throw the ball back on the field?

If it is me, I keep the ball, even if it means leaving my seat for the day. If you have a home run ball hit by a future Hall of Famer, you’re holding money in your hand. Find someone with the visiting team, get the ball signed, then put it in your living room.

    12) Marlins 6, Phillies 4— Miami sweeps in Philly for the first time sine 2009; Phils are 6-16 in their last 22 games. I’d guess the manager is on the hot seat.

    11) There are 353 Division I college basketball teams; 59 of them changed head coaches since the end of last season. Holy Cross is the only current head coaching opening in D-I.

    10) Carolina Panthers’ QB Cam Newton offered a man $1,500 to switch seats with him on a 10-hour flight from Paris on Friday, so he could have more leg room- the guy said no.

    9) Brewers 7, Reds 5— Baseball can be strange sometimes. Anthony DeSclafani struck out the first six Milwaukee batters Sunday, then got ripped for five runs in the third inning.

    8) Fernando Tatis Jr scored from third base Sunday on a pop-up that was about five feet on the outfield grass behind 2B; he caught the second baseman napping, and got Hunter Renfroe an RBI he didn’t deserve.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Nationals released P Trevor Rosenthal, who cost them $7M this year.
    — Braves P Mike Soroka left after two innings after being HBP on the forearm.
    — Dodgers put 3B David Freeze (hamstring) on IL.

    6) How important is it that Las Vegas has no state income tax?

On a $5.9M/yr deal William Karlsson will take home an estimated $3.75M after taxes in Vegas. If he signed the same deal in other NHL cities this is what he’d bring home:

    Toronto/Montreal: $2.77M
    Los Angeles/Anaheim/San Jose: $2.99M
    New York: $3.02M

    5) In the 4th inning Sunday, Pete Alonso hit a homer on an 0-2 pitch off of Cole Hamels; it was the first homer Hamels allowed on an 0-2 pitch since 2014.

    4) In late January, Indiana Pacers’ star Victor Oladipo ruptured a quadriceps tendon in his right knee; he might not be back playing until Christmas.

    3) College basketball transfer portal:
    — Gonzaga poaches PG Ryan Woolridge from North Texas

    2) Mets led the Cubs 3-2 after five innings Sunday, just 9th time in Jacob deGrom’s last 42 starts that the first five innings total went over.

    1) Pete Maravich would have turned 72 years old this weekend; he was great fun to watch, who in the ESPN era would’ve been an even bigger star than he was.

Great passer who was also flashy, outstanding scorer— he hung 69 points on the Knicks one night and that was before the 3-point line.

      Ballpark Figures - Week 14
      Joe Williams

      Sox Appeal

The Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox battle at Fenway Park on Monday in a series opener featuring a tremendous pitching matchup. RHP Lucas Giolito (10-2, 2.74 ERA) takes the ball for the ChiSox against LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (8-4, 4.71 ERA).

The White Sox have picked up just two wins in the past seven games overall, while going 4-9 in the past 13 games on the road. However, they're 5-2 in the past seven against a left-handed starting pitcher. In addition, the White Sox have picked up victories in nine of the past 10 starts by Giolito, and they're 6-1 in the past seven on the road with Giolito on the bump, too. Chicago is also 4-1 in the past five road outings by Giolito against a team with a winning overall mark, too, while winning each of his past five starts against American League East foes.

For the Red Sox, they're 8-3 in the past 11 games overall, while going 5-1 in the past six against American League Central foes. They're also 13-5 in the past 18 games on a Monday, for whatever that's worth. More importantly, the Red Sox are 7-3 in the past 10 games against a right-handed starting pitcher, but just 4-9 in the past 13 at Fenway Park. With Rodriguez on the hill, the Red Sox have won 22 of the past 26 against losing teams, and 22 of the past 27 at home against teams with an overall losing mark. They're also 20-6 in Rodriguez's past 26 at home, while going 10-1 in his past 11 in Game 1 of a new series.

In head-to-head matchups, Boston is 12-5 in the past 17 meetings overall, while going 6-2 in the past eight meetings at Fenway Park. As far as the total is concerned, the under is 10-4 in the past 14 in this series, while cashing in each of the past six battles in Beantown.

      Looking Ahead

      Monday, June 24

The Braves and Cubs kick off a four-game series at Wrigley Field with RHP Julio Teheran facing LHP Jon Lester. Atlanta has been red-hot lately, going 5-1 in the past six on the road, 5-0 in the past five road games against winning teams and 4-0 in the past four against NL Central foes. In addition, they're an impressive 6-0 in the past six vs. LHP and 8-2 in the past 10 overall against winning teams, while winning 16 of the past 21 contests overall. With Teheran on the bump, the Braves are 4-1 in the past five starts, and 4-1 in the past five on the road. They're also 6-1 in his past seven against NL Central foes.

For the Cubbies, they're an impressive 42-15 in Lester's past 57 home outings, including 21-10 in his past 31 at Wrigley against teams with a winning record. They're also 15-2 in his past 17 starts on a Monday. Overall the Cubs are 9-4 in the past 13 in the Friendly Confines, while going 17-5 in the past 22 at home against winning teams and 4-0 in the past four at home against teams with a winning road mark. Atlanta has won four straight at Wrigley with Teheran on the hill, and 8-1 in his past nine against the Cubs overall. However, the Cubs are 5-1 in Lester's past six against the Braves. The over is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in this series, and 11-5-1 in the past 17 battles at Wrigley.

      Weather Report
The Royals and Indians face a 40 percent or greater chance of precipitation for their game in Cleveland. Since they face each other so frequently, it wouldn't be surprising to see a reschedule if the forecast doesn't improve.

In Atlanta, the Braves and Cubs won't be dealing with precipitation, but they'll be facing a jetstream at 13-16 mph out to the right-center field power alley, perhaps affecting the total. Those are the only two weather trouble spots.

      Tuesday, June 25

The Royals and Indians continue their series at Progressive Field with RHP Glenn Sparkman going for Kansas City against RHP Shane Bieber of Cleveland. The Royals have won just once in the past five starts by Sparkman, and they're 1-4 in his past five on a grass surface, too. For the Indians, Bieber has been a rock in a rocky season. They're 5-2 over his past seven starts, and 5-1 in the past six starts by Bieber at Progressive Field, too. They have also won five of his past six starts inside the division, while going 6-1 in the past seven at home against teams with a losing overall mark.

Astros RHP Gerrit Cole faces his former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, at Minute Maid Park in the series opener. The Bucs roll in with victories in four straight, and they're 7-1 in the past eight interleague games against teams with a winning overall mark. While they're 4-1 in the past five vs. RHP, and 25-8 in the past 33 interleague games, Pittsburgh has lost eight of 10 on the road, and they're 2-8 in the past 10 on the road vs. RHP. However, they're a perfect 8-0 in the past eight interleague games with RHP Trevor Williams on the bump, and 7-3 in his past 10 overall.

The Astros will be happy to be home, as they're just 1-7 in their past eight games. However, they're 40-17 in the past 57 at home, and 15-6 in the past 21 interleague battles at 'The Juice Box'. They have also posted an impressive 11-1 mark in the past 12 home outings by Cole against teams with a losing overall mark, and they're 17-4 in his past 21 starts overall at home.

The Reds and Angels kick off an interleague series at the Big A on Tuesday night. RHP Tyler Mahle takes the ball for the Reds, while LHP Andrew Heaney works for the Halos. Cincinnati enters with wins in six of the past eight outings, and they're 5-2 in the past seven vs. LHP. They have also won four straight interleague battles, while going 4-0 in the past four against the AL West. However, they're just 4-15 in Mahle's past 19 starts overall, including a dismal 0-11 in the past 11 starts on te road by the right-hander. For the Angels, they're 8-3 in Heaney's past 11 starts at home, and 8-2 in his past 10 against losing teams, too. The Halos are also 5-0 in the past five interleague home games vs. RHP.

      Weather Report
The winds will be gusting from 10-13 mph from first base to third base at Comerica Park for the Rangers-Tigers matchup. In Boston, the White Sox and Red Sox will be dealing with a 30 percent or greater chance of precipitation, but the rain is forecast to be light, or even drizzle, so the game should get in without much interruption.

Rain won't be a problem in Chicago or Minneapolis, but winds will be blowing out to center field from 10-13 mph in both venues. The Rockies and Giants will also see a wind blowing from 11-14 mph to straightaway center field at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

                      STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

                      STREAKING

Zach Eflin, Philadelphia Phillies (6-7, 2.83 ERA, $-243 ): The Phillies are just 1-5 in Eflin's last six starts, but the blame for that doesn't fall on the 25-year-old pitcher's shoulders. Eflin has been on a roll since April 28, recording a 2.25 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in nine starts. He's been excellent at home all season, going 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA and BAA of .216.

Today, Eflin and the Phillies host the New York Mets who are 8-22 in their last 30 away games. The Mets will give the ball to Steven Matz who has struggled on the road, going 2-5 with a 6.21 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. Philadelphia has solid value at -124 for this one.

                      SLUMPING

Aaron Sanchez, Toronto Blue Jays (3-9, 5.49 ERA, $-526):
It's crazy to think that at one point this season Sanchez was 3-1 with a 2.32 ERA. Eight consecutive losses later and Sanchez is back near the bottom of pitcher rankings. He's been particularly awful in June, going 0-4 with an ERA of 11.09 and WHIP of 2.14. Sanchez and the Blue Jays are +220 underdogs in New York versus the Yankees.

The Yankees will start CC Sabathia who is 3-1 with a 2.18 ERA and .207 BAA at home. The Jays have lost by at least four runs in each of Sanchez's past five starts, while the Yankees have won by at least four runs in four out of Sabathia's last six starts at home. Taking New York at -1.5 pays out at -130, while the alternate run line of -2.5 is listed at +120 on BetAmerica.

                      3 STRIKES

                      BACK TO REALITY

That's more like the Drew Pomeranz we've come to know and love! After recording back to back five-inning shutouts against the Dodgers and Brewers, Pomeranz was back to his unreliable self last Wednesday, getting rocked for seven runs in a rematch with the Dodgers. The lefty now has a 2-7 record with a 7.09 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and BAA of .308, and will face the Rockies in San Francisco tonight.

The Rockies will start Jon Gray and his 4.18 ERA, and are small favorites at -112. Even with the Rockies batting poorly on the road (with a BA of .229) and the Giants hitting terribly everywhere (.224 BA), the O/U of 7.5 seems too low.

                      STEADY FREDDY

Braves star Freddy Freeman is red-hot, batting .369 and driving in 18 runs over his last 11 games, but truth be told he's always ultra-productive. On the season he has a BA of .316 with 21 homers and 61 RBI, and those numbers are even better on the road where he hits .347.

Today, Freeman and the Braves head to Chicago to take on the Cubs and pitcher Jon Lester. Lester has struggled recently with an ERA of 7.02 and seven home runs allowed over his last three starts. Freeman has +220 odds to crank a homer today.

                      NO RUN SUPPORT

Kansas City hurler Brad Keller's 4.45 ERA and .243 BAA is fairly comparable to Cleveland starter Adam Plutko's 4.55 ERA and .252 BAA. However, Keller's teammates have been far less helpful than Plutko's going into today's matchup between the two pitchers.

The Royals have averaged just 1.2 runs per game over Keller's last 5 starts and are just 1-10 over his last 11 starts. While Cleveland is 6-1 in Plutko's previous seven starts while averaging 10.33 runs per game over his last three. Kansas City is just 11-26 on the road and are +150 underdogs for this game.
