    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Spreads for early season college games:

    — Florida (-7.5) vs Miami

    — Cincinnati (-3.5) vs UCLA

    — Utah (-6) vs BYU

    — Wake Forest (-3.5) vs Utah State

    — Wisconsin (-11) vs South Florida

    — Colorado (-11) vs Colorado State

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

    13) UConn is expected to leave the AAC and go back to the Big East for the 2020-21 season; not sure what this does to their football program, since the Big East isn’t a football league.

Huskies have made the NCAA basketball tournament only once in the last five years.

UConn leaving the AAC raises the question: who replaces the Huskies in the AAC?

    12) NHL does their draft better than any other league; the whole league is under one roof, all the coaches/GM’s, and they move the draft around North America every year- they did that before the NFL started doing it.

Philadelphia Flyers drafted a kid who went to Florida on a golf scholarship, then thought better of it and transferred to Minnesota, where he walked on to the hockey team. Not a lot of guys in the NHL went to college on a golf scholarship.

    11) San Francisco Giants are thinking about taking their bullpens off the field and putting them under the stands in right-center field, which would mean the fences in “Triples Alley” would have to come in, making the dimensions much more hitter-friendly.

    10) Twice in the last week, Cardinals’ pitcher John Flaherty was used as a pinch-runner in the last inning; one time he was thrown out at the plate to end the game, Thursday he got picked off second to end the game. His pinch-running career might be over.

    9) Former Angels’ OF Tim Salmon has the most home runs (299) by anyone who never made an All-Star team.

    8) Talked last week about the Angels DFA’ing OF Carlos Puello; he quickly found a home with the Miami Marlins, where he is now their rightfielder.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Indians put P Mike Clevinger (ankle) on IL.
    — MLB suspended Texas 3B Asdrubel Cabrera for four games.

    — MLB suspended Oakland P Frankie Montas for 80 games (PEDs)

    6) New York Daily News was not invited to a Friday press conference for Knicks’ draft picks RJ Barrett and Ignas Brazdeikis, but every other NYC outlet covering the team was. Owner James Dolan doesn’t like the paper’s coverage and has effectively banned them from covering the team.

Dolan is one of the worst owners in sports, if not the worst.

    5) In his last three starts, Jacob deGrom threw 112-116-113 pitches, which is indicative of teams starting to stretch their better starting pitchers out a little more.

Stats show that with relievers pitching more and more innings, their ERA’s are going higher and higher, so this is the result of that.

    4) Yu Darvish didn’t get a decision in any of his last ten starts, which ties a big league record that was last done in 1977 (Lerch, D’Acquisto), and has only been done four times ever.

    3) Michigan-Vanderbilt will play a best-of-3 series for the College World Series title starting Monday.

    2) Dodgers 5, Rockies 4— Alex Verdugo hit a walk-off homer for LA- they walked off Colorado Friday night, too.

    1) If the baseball playoffs started today…….
NL: Atlanta-Chicago-Los Angeles. Wild Cards: Cardinals @ Brewers
AL: New York-Minnesota-Houston. Wild Cards: Bos/Clev @ Rays

                      STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

                      STREAKING

Joey Lucchesi, San Diego Padres (6-4, 3.74 ERA, $-1):
The 26-year-old lefty didn't have the greatest start to the year but has been throwing the ball very well lately. Over his last seven starts Lucchesi has a 2.70 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in 43 1-3 innings. Perhaps most importantly, San Diego has gone 5-2 during that stretch.

Today, Lucchesi and the Padres are -145 faves against Steven Brault and the Pirates. Keep in mind that Brault is also pitching much better lately, lowering his ERA to 4.40 after being above 8.00 for most of May. Brault has an impressive ERA of 1.64 over his last five starts and is coming off a shutout against the Marlins. The O/U for this game is set at 9.

                      SLUMPING

Yusei Kikuchi, Seattle Mariners (3-5, 5.15 ERA, $-274):
There might not be a worse pitcher in the majors right now than Kikuchi. Over his last five starts he has gone 0-4 with a staggering 10.35 ERA and 2.70 WHIP. Kikuchi and the Mariners will host the Orioles today, but the left-hander hasn't been any better at pitcher-friendly T-Mobile park with an ERA of 5.67 and BAA of .286 at home.

Gabriel Ynoa will get the start for Baltimore and he's still looking for his first win of the year having gone 0-4 with a 5.65 ERA and BAA of .278. With the Over 21-6-2 in the M's last 29 games at home, the Over 9 seems like a good bet.

                      3 STRIKES

READY TO BREAK OUT OF A FUNK

The Braves will start Mike Soroka for this afternoon's contest versus the Nationals. While the 21-year-old is 8-1 with a 2.12 ERA and 0.98 WHIP, he's actually been going through a bit of a rough streak. Over his last four starts he has a 4.21 ERA which might be solid for most rookies but is disappointing for a guy that started the year with a 5-1 record and a 1.01 ERA.

However, there are some promising signs for Braves backers today; Soroko has been lights out on the road, going 4-0 with a 1.11 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and .154 batting average allowed. And he'll face off against Washington's Austin Voth who will be making his season debut.

A TALE OF TWO HOME AND AWAY SPLITS

If you're just looking at overall numbers Angels starter Tyler Skaggs (6-6, 4.61 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) and Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas (5-7, 4.48 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) are quite similar.

Look at the home and away splits though and you can see why backing Mikolas and the hometown Cards on Sunday night is the right call. Skaggs has a 5.27 ERA and .261 BAA on the road, while Mikolas has a 2.55 ERA with a .211 BAA at home.

                      NOT SO SUPER NOVA

Ivan Nova has been one of the worst pitchers in the league and should consider himself lucky his record of 3-5 isn't worse. He has an ERA of 6.01 in 15 starts but what really stands out is his BAA of .323. Today, Nova and the White Sox go up against the Texas Rangers who plate 5.56 runs per game, good for third-best in the majors.

With the Texans starting Adrian Sampson and his .289 BAA, and the Over cashing in 14 of umpire Carlos Torres' last 17 games behind the plate, the Over is worth a look again despite sitting at a very high 11.5.
