    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds for the US Open this weekend:

    15-2: Brooks Koepka

    8-1: Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy

    9-1: Eldrick Woods

    16-1: Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth

    22-1: Justin Rose

25-1: Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

    13) Warriors 106, Raptors 105— Toronto had a 6-point lead and the ball with 3:00 left, but couldn’t finish the job; Game 6 is in Oakland Thursday. Warriors were +6 in 12:00 with Kevin Durant on the floor; seriously doubt he plays again in this series.

Late night update: Warriors think Durant tore his achilles.

    12) Dallas Keuchel made his ’19 debut Monday, pitching for Rome in the Class A South Atlantic League; he allowed a single, a walk with nine strikeouts in seven scoreless innings.

    11) Braves 13, Pirates 7— Josh Donaldson got drilled by a pitch in the first inning, the ump threw the pitcher out, and a high-scoring game broke out. Marte and Albies both homered twice in this game.

    10) Former Auburn, Akron coach Terry Bowden is heading to the Clemson football staff as a 63-year-old graduate assistant; his brother Tommy was Clemson’s head coach for 10 years.

Bowden is going for a Master’s Degree in athletic leadership at Clemson, and his position on the staff is an unpaid graduate internship.

    9) Auburn 14, North Carolina 7— Tigers advance to the College World Series; they scored 13 runs in the top of the first inning. Rough way for the season to end for UNC.

    8) Wednesday’s Rangers-Red Sox game in Boston moves up from 7:00 to 4:00 because Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final is Wednesday night in Boston.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Pirates put P Jordan Lyles (hamstring) on IL.
    — Cardinals put P Adam Wainwright (hamsring) on IL
    — Angels’ P Matt Harvey aggravated his back injury on a rehab start.

    6) Rained in New York City Monday night, so Subway Series will have a day/night twinbill on Tuesday, with games at 1:05, 7:05.

    5) Tony Parker retired after 18 seasons in the NBA; he won four NBA titles with the Spurs.

    4) Read online yesterday that El Cortez and Four Queens are last places in Las Vegas that deal low-limit single deck blackjack that still pays 3-2 on naturals. Most single deck games pay 6-5 now.

    3) College basketball transfer portal:
    — Grad transfer Isaiah Moss bolts from Iowa to Kansas.
    — Grad transfer Tevin Mack bolts from Alabama to Clemson.
    — F Eugene Omoruyi bolts from Rutgers to Oregon.

    2) Arizona 13, Phillies 8— This was seventh time since 1914 that a team led off a game with three straight home runs; last time was in 2017, also the Diamondbacks.

Phillies’ Jerad Eickhoff didn’t allow a HR in any of his first five starts (30 IP); he’s allowed at least one homer in six straight starts (13 HR in last 24 1/3 IP).

    1) Field for the College World Series is set:
Bracket One: Arkansas, Florida State, Michigan, Texas Tech.
Bracket Two: Auburn, Louisville, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt

                  STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                  STREAKING

Kenta Maeda, Los Angeles Dodgers (7-2, 3.48 ERA, $58):
The Dodgers are on fire and Hyu-Jin Ryu and Clayton Kershaw aren't the only pitchers they have worth backing. Maeda had a rocky start to his season going 3-2 with a 5.20 ERA through his first five starts, but he's been terrific ever since. In his last seven starts he's gone 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 44 strikeouts through 39 innings.

That said, Maeda's home/away splits this season reveal a worrying trend; he's 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA and .145 BAA at Dodger Stadium and 2-2 with a 5.09 ERA and .261 BAA in seven starts on the road. Today Maeda and the Dodgers are technically playing an away game, albeit against their Los Angeles neighbours the Angels. The Dodgers are -155 favorites with the O/U set at 9.

                  SLUMPING

Chris Paddack, San Diego Padres (4-4, 2.97 ERA, $199):
Paddack's season stats are still pretty impressive for a rookie pitcher, boasting a WHIP of 0.89 and BAA of .189 but he's actually going through a cold stretch. In his last four starts he's gone just 1-3 with a 5.85 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. In his previous two appearances he's given up five homers.

Help could be on the way though, in the form of the San Francisco Giants. Two of his three poor starts this season were on the road against the Yankees and Dodgers, a scary task for any pitcher let alone a rookie. The Giants on the other hand, are far from fearsome, ranking last in the majors in both batting average (.208) and slugging (.322) at home. The Padres are -175 road faves with a total of 8.

                  3 STRIKES

                  FEELING THE BROTHERLY LOVE

The Arizona Diamondbacks play the second game of their series in Philadelphia, having gone 10-1 in their last 11 games in the City of Brotherly Love. They're also 8-2 in their previous 10 games overall versus the Phillies and are currently riding a five game winning streak. The Phillies are 7-6 in their previous 13 contests at home but just 0-4 in their last four home games versus teams with a winning record.

Arizona will give one of their top prospects Jon Duplantier his third career start. He's coming off an impressive performance against the Dodgers and has a 3.27 ERA and BAA of .218 over 22 innings in seven appearances. Philly will start Jake Arrieta (5-5, 4.29 ERA) who has allowed five runs in each of his last two games with a WHIP of 2.38. The D-Backs are +110 underdogs.

                  KEEP RIDING THE OVER

Seattle is the best Over bet in the majors going 44-22 O/U on the season, and is in Minnesota to face the Twins. The M's will give the nod to Mike Leake and while he's coming off back-to-back strong performances, those were at home where he is much more comfortable. On the road Leake has been...well leaking runs going 1-4 in seven starts with a 5.57 ERA.

Martin Perez will toe the rubber for the Twins but despite a 7-2 record his form has been been up and down throughout the year and currently it's been looking pretty down. Perez has an ERA of 4.26 and WHIP of 1.84 over his last four starts.

It just so happens that the Mariners are excellent hitters on the road scoring 5.47 runs per game with a slugging percentage of .497 (second-best in the majors). With Minnesota 4-0-1 to the Over in their last five games, the Over 9.5 is worth a look today.
