    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Some college football spreads for this fall:

    Sept 21— Notre Dame @ Georgia (-9.5)

    Sept 28— USC @ Washington (-9.5)

Oct 5— Michigan State @ Ohio State (-15.5)

Oct 12— Texas vs Oklahoma (-6.5)

    Oct 19— Michigan (-4.5) @ Penn State

    Nov 9— LSU @ Alabama (-16)

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

    13) Warriors 109, Raptors 104— Golden State opened second half on an 18-0 run; they even series 1-1, with Game 3 in Oakland Wednesday. Klay Thompson tweaked a hamstring in the 4th quarter and is questionable for Game 3.

    12) Chicago Bears’ coach Matt Nagy gave the commencement address at his alma mater, the U of Delaware this weekend; they showed a 2:30 clip on Twitter and it was sound advice for all of us. Basically, the theme of the talk was:

“Be You = Believing in yourself more than anyone else.”

    11) Dwyane Wade was a surprise speaker at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS’s graduation ceremonies Sunday in Parkland, FL; that is the school where a mass shooting took place last year. The now-retired Wade has been a regular supporter of the school ever since the shooting.

We hear a lot about famous people doing cruddy things; Wade does a lot of good things.

    10) Hasheem Thabeet was the No. 2 overall draft pick in the 2009 NBA Draft; he scored only 2.2 ppg in his five-year NBA career- he last played for the Thunder in 2014. Thabeet has played overseas since then.

He is 32 now, and is trying to make a comeback in the NBA. Am guessing someone gives him a shot in the Las Vegas Summer League. He is 7-foot-3, after all.

    9) Had lot of thunderstorms in the Albany area Sunday, and thunderstorms knock out my satellite signal, so I can’t watch baseball. I don’t like thunderstorms.

    8) Some SEC football teams are upgrading their non-conference schedules; Florida didn’t sell out recent home games with Charleston Southern, Colorado State and Idaho, plus they got hurt by strength of schedule, when you think about the college football playoff selection process, so they’ve added home/home series with Colorado/Texas.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Milwaukee put P Jhoulys Chacin (back) on the IL.
    — Seattle traded Jay Bruce to the Phillies, for a minor league 3B.
    — Rangers put OF Joey Gallo (oblique) on the IL.

    6) Despite Bruce getting traded from Seattle to Philly, the Mets remain responsible for a $1.5M installment of his signing bonus, a payment due Jan. 31, 2020.

    5) Stan Wawrinka beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets at the French Open tennis tournament; match took five hours, nine minutes. Next round will be a tough one for him.

    4) College basketball transfer portal:
    — Former Valparaiso C Jaume Sorolla bolted to Cincinnati.
    — UMass transfer Unique McLean bolted to St Francis NY.

    3) Since 2016, Khris Davis has the most multi-HR games (19), followed by Giancarlo Stanton (16), Manny Machado (15) and Trevor Story (13).

    2) If the baseball playoffs started today:
NL: New York-Twins-Astros. Wild Card: Rays-Rangers
    AL: Phillies-Brewers-Dodgers. Wild Card: Braves-Cubs

    1) Baseball draft starts at 6pm Monday; the weirdest of the drafts, since kids get picked and then disappear into the minor leagues for a few years. Hopefully this year, the A’s won’t pick any football players.

Because of the draft, it is a very slow day for games; only four games scheduled, one a makeup; the three regularly-scheduled games are all on the west coast.

      Monday's NL Tip Sheet
      Kevin Rogers

      Dodgers (-140, 8 ½) at Diamondbacks – 9:40 PM EST

Through 60 games, the team with the best record in baseball is the same one that represented the National League in the World Series the last two seasons. The Dodgers (41-19) finished off a 6-1 homestand against NL East foes, capped off by a three-game sweep of the Phillies to improve to 25-7 at Chavez Ravine.

Los Angeles allowed three runs in each of the first two wins against Philadelphia before blanking the Phillies on Sunday, 8-0 as hefty -180 favorites. The game was actually closer than the final score indicated as the first run didn’t come across until the seventh inning. The Dodgers busted things open in the eighth inning for seven runs to give a nice assist to run-line backers, highlighted by Joc Pederson’s 18th home runs of the season.

The Diamondbacks (30-30) started the weekend in poor form after getting swept at Colorado in a four-game series, capped off by three losses by one-run apiece. The woes continued in Friday’s 5-4 defeat to the Mets after allowing two late runs to extend the cold streak to five. It looked the losing skid would reach six games on Saturday in a battle of aces between Zack Greinke and Jacob deGrom as the Mets jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the eighth inning. However, the D-backs rallied for four in the bottom of the eighth before walking off in the 11th for a 6-5 triumph.

Arizona carried that momentum in Sunday’s matchup with New York as the D-backs hit a pair of first inning home runs to cruise past the Mets, 7-1. Right-hander Merrill Kelly bounced back from consecutive poor outings to put together his best start of the season by striking out 10 in 7.2 innings of work. Arizona picked up only its fourth home series victory in nine tries this season, but the D-backs enter Monday’s matchup with a 7-2 record in series openers at Chase Field.

Dodgers’ right-hander Walker Buehler was bailed out in a walk-off win over the Mets last Wednesday as he allowed five earned runs in five innings of work. Los Angeles dug out of an 8-3 hole to stun New York, 9-8 thanks to four runs in the ninth inning as the Dodgers have scored 19 runs in Buehler’s last two starts. The Dodgers have split Buehler’s six road starts this season, while giving up five runs in only three innings against Arizona on March 31 in an 8-7 victory.

Robbie Ray went through a four-start stretch in May in which he yielded a total of six runs as Arizona went 3-1. However, the D-backs’ southpaw was tagged for five runs in less than five innings of work in a 5-4 defeat at Colorado last Wednesday to suffer his first loss since April 3 at San Diego. The D-backs have split four home starts made by Ray this season, while Arizona beat Los Angeles, 5-4 in 13 innings the last time the left-hander faced the Dodgers on March 29.

      Phillies (-125, 7 ½) at Padres – 10:10 PM EST

In spite of suffering their first sweep this season, the Phillies (33-26) still sit atop the NL East. Philadelphia traveled to Los Angeles following back-to-back series wins over St. Louis and Milwaukee, but the Phillies limped out of Chavez Ravine with three consecutive losses. The offense mustered fewer than three runs for the fourth straight game, as Philadelphia slipped to 1-18 the last 19 contests when posting three runs or less.

Philadelphia is in the midst of its longest losing skid of the season following Sunday’s 8-0 shutout by Los Angeles. The Phillies did their best to hold the Dodgers off the scoreboard as the game was scoreless through six innings, but L.A. attacked Philadelphia’s bullpen for eight runs, wasting a solid start by Nick Pivetta, who struck out nine batters in six scoreless innings. Philadelphia entered the series on a five-game winning streak in Game 1’s prior to the 6-3 setback on Friday night.

The Padres (30-29) cruised past the Marlins on Friday night in a 5-2 victory at Petco Park, but Miami captured the final two meetings for the series win. Since San Diego posted a five-game winning streak capped off by a 19-4 destruction of Toronto May 25, the Padres have slipped to 2-5 the last seven contests, while scoring nine runs in the five losses.

Aaron Nola has been one of the hottest pitchers in baseball since allowing 17 runs in his first four starts. The Phillies’ right-hander has yielded 14 earned runs in his past eight starts combined, while Philadelphia has won each of Nola’s last six outings. The latest victory came against the Cardinals last Wednesday in an 11-4 rout as a -175 home favorite as Nola allowed one run in seven innings, marking his sixth start giving up one run or less.

Eric Lauer counters for the Padres, as the southpaw has been sharp since getting tagged for eight runs in three innings of a 12-2 setback at Colorado on May 10. In the past three starts, Lauer has given up four runs (three earned) as the Padres are 3-0 in this stretch. The more recent win for Lauer occurred last Wednesday at Yankee Stadium in a 5-4 triumph as a +170 underdog, while San Diego has won each of his past two starts at Petco Park against Pittsburgh and Arizona.

The Padres and Phillies are meeting for the first time this season as the two squads split six meetings last season. San Diego took two of three matchups at Petco Park, but Nola beat the Padres as a -185 road favorite, 5-1 for the lone Phillies’ win in that series last August.

                STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

                STREAKING

                Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies (6-0, 4.18, $225):
If Nola had a theme song it would probably be "All I Do Is Win." His ERA, 1.48 WHIP and .272 BAA are all subpar but he's still unbeaten with a 6-0 record in 12 starts. Overr his last six starts the Phillies are 6-0.

Today, Nola and Philadelphia are visiting San Diego as -147 favorites. In his career, Nola has pitched just one game at PETCO Park, a victory in 2018 where he went six scoreless innings. San Diego is batting just .231 this season, and that number is even worse at home at .220.

                SLUMPING

Wade LeBlanc, Seattle Mariners (2-2, 6.99 ERA, $-208):
The Mariners are 0-4 in LeBlanc's last four starts. The lefty has struggled all year with a WHIP of 1.66 and BAA of .312, which is bad news with Seattle going up against a Houston lineup that has the fourth-best batting average (.283) and second-best slugging percentage (.510) in the majors against southpaws.

The Astros will be starting rookie Corbin Martin who is 1-1 in four starts with a 5.51 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and .284 BAA. But run-support could still be lacking for LeBlanc, with the M's batting just .225 at home. The Mariners are priced as +115 underdogs with the Over/Under set at 9.5.

                3 STRIKES

                ON THEIR HEELS

The San Diego Padres come into Monday off two straight losses to the Miami Marlins and have just two wins in their last seven games. During those five defeats, the Padres have been roughed up in the early innings, allowing a total of 26 runs in the first five innings – an average of 5.2 runs per game in the opening five frames – including giving up seven and five first-five runs in those losses to Miami.

San Diego starter Eric Lauer has a 4.25 ERA through the first five frames this season and has been especially generous to batters in the fourth inning (15.30 ERA). The Philadelphia Phillies, Monday’s opponents, are plating an average of 2.88 runs in the opening five innings so far in 2019 and will be itching to put some ticks on the scoresheet after plating only six total runs in a three-game series sweep at the hands of the L.A. Dodgers this past weekend. Books have the Phillies’ first-five team total set at two runs (Over -115).

                UNDER WONDERS

The Houston Astros take the field Monday as the second-best Under bet in the majors, with a 23-34-3 Over/Under record in 2019 (59.6% Unders). A good part of that mark has to do with the club’s stingy play on the road, boasting a collective 3.10 ERA as a visitor which has manifested itself into a 11-18-1 O/U count.

Ahead of the Astros are the Cleveland Indians at 23-35-1 Over/Under (60.3% Unders) while the Cincinnati Reds (23-34-2 O/U), Milwaukee Brewers (25-34-1 O/U), and Philadelphia Phillies (25-32-2 O/U) round out the Top 5 Under plays.

Why are these records notable? Well, so far, the 2019 MLB campaign has produced 9.4 runs per game – the highest scoring rate since the 2007 season in which clubs plated an average of 9.6 runs per contests. Heading into Monday, the 2019 season has produced a 423-419-38 Over/Under record – with just 50.23 percent of games going Over.

                WORLD SERIES UPDATE

With just four games on the MLB odds board Monday, it’s the perfect time to check in on the latest odds to win the World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers are +275 front runners, taking a 41-19 record into Monday’s action.

Behind the Dodgers are the Houston Astros at +300, New York Yankees at +550, Minnesota Twins at +750, and Philadelphia Phillies at +1,200.
