13) One important thing in baseball now is for your starting pitchers to go deeper into games, to take stress off your bullpen. Over the course of a 162-game schedule, you can wear out your bullpen if they get used too much— after all, the starting pitchers are the better pitchers.

So far this season, Angels have only had 10 games where their starter went 6+ innings, but they use the opener a decent amount. John Means lasted six innings Wednesday; it was only the 11th game that Baltimore’s starters lasted 6+ innings

12) Pirates 7, Reds 2— These teams don’t like each other; since 2014, 72 Pirates have been hit by Cincinnati pitchers, 64 Reds have been hit by Pittsburgh hurlers. Six players were hit in the 5-4 Pirates’ win Wednesday.

Eugenio Suarez got drilled on the hand in 8th inning; x-rays came back negative, but Suarez had some words for pitcher Clay Holmes on his way to first base.

11) Cubs starting pitchers gave up 6+ runs four games in a row Saturday-Tuesday, first time they’ve done that since August of 2006.

2) Blue Jays’ CF Jonathan Davis made one of the best catches you’ll ever see to end the first inning in Tampa Bay last night- it saved two runs, cost Avisail Garcia two RBI.

1) Random thing I learned today: singer Ariana Grande is allergic to tomatoes- she cancelled two shows after having an allergic reaction this week. No pizza for her.

The Angels and Mariners kick off a four-game series at T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field), and the Mariners are hoping that their pitching will be a little better. In the final two games of the series against the Texas Rangers they allowed 19 runs for a pair of 'over' results. The Halos know all about over results, cashing in four consecutive games overall, as well as four straight on the road. In the most recent four-game set in Anaheim on April 18-21, the over connected in three of the four games. However, in the earlier two-game mini series in Seattle, the under was 2-0.

This game features a battle of two left-handers, as Tyler Skaggs toes the slab for the Angels, and rookie LHP Yusei Kikuchi takes the ball for the Mariners. On a side note, this will also be the first meeting in the United States between Kikuchi and Shohei Ohtani. The two attended the same high school back in Japan. Kikuchi will make a traditional start, too, as he has had an opener every fifth starter as the team looks to manage his workload.

The over is 4-0 in the past four inside the division for the Angels. However, the under is an impressive 8-1-2 in the past 11 starts for Skaggs, including 5-1 in his past six on the road against teams with a losing record. Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles Dodgers (7-1, 1.65 ERA, $350): There is no hotter pitcher in baseball than Ryu. He had a “rough” outing last time out and his ERA and WHIP over his last three starts are both 0.86. The South Korean southpaw is also limiting opponents to a .223 on base percentage. Heck, he has allowed just four walks all season. Ryu will look to keep it rolling when he and the Dodgers host the Mets tonight. Los Angeles is currently a big -270 favorite with a total of 8.5.

SLUMPING

Kyle Freeland, Colorado Rockies (2-6, 6.71 ERA, $-279): It’s been tough to watch Freeland on the mound this season a year after he looked like one of the best pitchers in the NL. It’s been tough all season long for the lefty, but the last three starts have been particularly bad. He’s been roughed up to the tune of a 10. 03 ERA and a 2.23 WHIP while surrendering a .426 on base percentage. Freeland will look to get back on track when the Rockies host the Diamondbacks tonight.

HOME RUN HAPP

One of our favorite whipping boys takes the mound as one of sports’ greatest rivalries resumes tonight as J.A. Happ and the Yankees host the Red Sox. Happ’s first full season in pinstripes hasn’t gone as exactly to plan thanks to a 5.09 ERA, but his problem has been mostly keeping the ball in the park. The lefty has already surrendered 14 home runs in his 11 starts this season, including five in his past three starts. A guy like J.D. Martinez is +340 to hit a home run tonight.

ONE-SIDED RIVALRY

Carlos Carrasco has dominated the White Sox over the past three seasons. The Indians’ right-hander is 7-1 with a 1.08 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP in 10 games against the division rival Pale Hose over that stretch. That includes 12 innings of right-hit shutout ball this season. It’s no surprise Cleveland is a healthy -198 road favorite for tonight’s matchup, so maybe consider the Tribe on the runline at a much more reasonable -120.
