    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Odds to win the college football title next fall:

    2-1— Clemson Tigers

    5-2— Alabama Crimson Tide

    7-1— Georgia Bulldogs

    12-1— Ohio State Buckeyes

    14-1— Michigan, Oklahoma

    20-1— LSU, Auburn

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) Raptors 92, 76ers 90— Kawhi Leonard hit one of the most dramatic shots in NBA history at the buzzer; he scored 41 points as Toronto advances to the Eastern finals against Milwaukee.

As Leonard was dribbling around the perimeter with :02 or :03 left, some imbecile at the bar I was at (me) says “We’re heading to overtime.” Not so much.

Leonard made $23,114,067 this season; he earned every penny Sunday night.

    12) Portland 100, Denver 96— Trailblazers play Golden State in western finals, which will make for a long few days for the Curry family. Seth Curry plays for Portland- they trailed by 17 in this game.

    11) If you like listening to podcasts and you like football and you like movies, there is a MMQB NFL Podcast that is periodically going to analyze football movies- they’ve already done Draft Day and Any Given Sunday. Good stuff. It is available in the iTunes store for free.

One thing though, it is weird hearing a podcast when the people doing the podcast are maybe half your age, and they’re talking about a 20-year old movie like Any Given Sunday.

    10) Podcasts are fun, especially late at night, but they also make me a little sad, because they’re slowly replacing writing as a way of communicating, and writing is a great skill we should cultivate in young people. If we stop reading and writing, thats not a good thing.

Podcasts are a lazy way of communicating; instead of sitting at your keyboard and thinking about what to type, you just blurt out whatever comes into your mind. It is faster and a lot less strenuous.

Some podcasts aren’t so good, but some are really, really good- you have to be a good consumer so you don’t waste your own time.

    9) Madison Bumgarner is likely to get traded in the next couple months; he’s posted an 8-team no-trade list, with every team on the list a contender.

Bumgarner’s in the walk year of his contract, and probably wants to get a contract extension before he’d agree to approve a trade to one of the eight contenders.

    8) Meanwhile, today is May 13 and Dallas Keuchel, Craig Kimbrel are still free agents.

    7) Baseball injuries:
    — Mariners put P Felix Hernandez (shoulder) on the IL.

    — Astros put Jose Altuve (hamstring) on the IL.

    6) Dodgers 6, Nationals 0— Hyun-Jin Ryu didn’t allow a hit until the 8th inning.

    5) Astros 15, Rangers 5— Houston scored 26 runs the last two days.

    4) Red Sox 11, Mariners 2— Boston outscored Seattle 34-8 in this series.

    3) Pirates 10, Cardinals 6— St Louis lost seven of its last nine games.

    2) Bruins 6, Hurricanes 2— Boston grabs 2-0 series lead in eastern final.

    1) Further evidence the world may be going nuts: an American Airlines pilot was dragged from a plane in Kentucky and arrested this weekend for the 2015 triple-homicide of three of his former neighbors. Oy.

                    Ballpark Figures - Week 8
                    Joe Williams

                    Short Slate

There are just seven games to be played on Monday, so it's a rather shortened slate. The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners square off at T-Mobile Park (still weird not calling it Safeco Field) on Monday, as RHP Mike Fiers attempts to join Johnny Vander Meer as the only pitcher to record consecutive no-hitters. He'll be opposed by LHP Yusei Kikuchi, a rookie southpaw who enters play 2-1 with a 3.54 ERA and .266 on-base percentage allowed while managing a sparkling 1.06 WHIP through 48 1/3 innings.

The Athletics have won just once in the past 10 road games, while going 1-4 over the past five outings for Fiers. However, the A's are 12-3 across the past 15 starts by Fiers on a grass surface, and 5-2 in his past seven inside the division. In addition, the A's are a dismal 3-15 acrosss the past 18 road games against a team with a losing overall mark. However, they are 10-4 in the past 14 road games vs. LHP, while going just 5-17 across the past 22 games against a team with a losing overall record.

The Mariners fired out of the chute, but they're just 7-21 across the past 28 games, and 2-6 in the past eight agaisnt a right-handed starting pitcher. They're also just 1-6 in the past seven at home vs. RHP, although they're 6-2 in the past eight at home against a losing team, and 8-2 in the past 10 overall against teams with a losing overall mark. In this series, the over is 7-1 in the past eight meetings, while going 8-3 in the past 11 battles in Seattle. The A's have also won just four of their past 13 games overall against the M's.

                    Looking Ahead

                    Monday, May 13

The Pirates and Diamondbacks square off in the desert with RHP Nick Kingham facing LHP Robbie Ray in a righy-lefty matchup. Pittsburgh has won five of the past six on the road, and they're 4-1 in the past five against winning teams while going 6-2 in the psat eight overall. However, they're still just 0-4 in the past four vs. LHP, while cashing in only one of Kingham's past six outings. They're also 0-4 in his past four road starts against a team with a winning overall mark.

The Twins and Angels lock horns in the Twin Cities, and that's been good for the Halos lately. They're 10-2 in the past 12 against American League Central Division foes. They're also 6-1 in the past seven vs. RHP, and 5-2 in the past seven on the road. While they're 7-3 in the past 10 road outings by LHP Tyler Skaggs against teams with a winning mark, they're just 1-4 in his past five road contests. The Twins are a perfect 5-0 across RHP Jose Berrios' past five outings, and a whoppig 14-2 in the past 16 at home against teams with a losing overall mark. The under is 4-1 in the past five in this series, going going 4-1 in the past five.

                    Weather Report
The O's and Yankees are expecting heavy rain for their AL East Division tilt. Look for this one to be postponed, as their closer proximity to each other means a reschedule is a lot more palatable for both sides rather than a lengthy rain delay. The Brewers and Phillies will also be looking at significant rain chances of 70 percent or more, so expect a delay.

The Astros and Tigers needn't worry about rain, but wind will be the issue, gusting from 10-14 mph to straightaway center field.

                    Tuesday, May 14

Since coming over from the Tampa Bay Rays, RHP Wilmer Font has allowed two earned runs, three hits and a homer over four innings. He is a pitcher without a lengthy track record, and it will take a village against the Washington Nationals.

Reds RHP Sonny Gray enters play against the Chicago Cubs with no victories over eight starts, and he has failed to post a quality start in four outings dating back to April 17 in Los Angelss against the Dodgers. The Reds are 0-3 over Gray's past three outings, and 2-6 in his eight starts this season.

Marlins RHP Jose Urena heads into play 1-5 with a 4.82 ERA across 46 2/3 innings, yielding 15 walks with 32 strikeouts. He was sharp last time out, allowing two runs - one earned - and five hits over seven innings in a no-decision at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.

                    Weather Report
The Brewers and Phillies will be bombarded with winds of 10-13 mph blowing in from the left-center field power alley. The Mets and Nationals also neede to hang onto thier hats, with 11-14 mphs gusts from left-center field to first base. Other than that, everything looks tip-top.

LEADING OFF: Fiers follows no-hitter, Brewers in Philly
                        May 12, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        ENCORE! ENCORE!

Oakland right-hander Mike Fiers (3-3, 5.48 ERA) pitches in Seattle, starting for the first time since his second career no-hitter Tuesday against Cincinnati. Fiers lost to the Mariners on opening day in Japan.

Rookie left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (2-1, 3.54) gets the ball for Seattle after a masterful outing at Yankee Stadium that raised eyebrows last week. A dark substance was spotted under the bill of Kikuchi's cap - possibly illegal pine tar. Major League Baseball issued no penalty afterward or even a statement on the matter. ''It'll work itself out,'' Mariners manager Scott Servais said the next day. Coming off a 2-8 road trip, Seattle (20-23) has lost four in a row and 15 of 19 after opening 13-2.

                        TWINS HURTING

Minnesota slugger Nelson Cruz is scheduled for an MRI after leaving Sunday's game against Detroit with a left wrist injury. Twins pitcher Martin Perez (5-1) exited in the sixth after being hit in the left foot by a line drive. He is day to day with a bruise, but Perez said he'll be ready for his next start.

                        TOUGH ROAD TRIP

After dropping two of three to the Cubs at Wrigley Field over the weekend, Christian Yelich and the Milwaukee Brewers visit Philadelphia to face another National League division leader. Aaron Nola (3-0, 4.57 ERA) starts for the Phillies in the opener of a four-game set. Nola has given up just one run in each of his last three outings.

                        ROLLIN' INTO MOTOWN

George Springer and the Astros try to extend their five-game winning streak when they start a series in Detroit. Springer went 5 for 5 with four RBIs and a pair of home runs that increased his total to an AL-high 15 as Houston routed Texas 15-5 on Sunday. He hit his fifth leadoff homer this season and became the first Astros player to have five hits and score five runs in a game. Alex Bregman also went deep twice and tied his career best with five RBIs as the AL West leaders set season highs for runs and hits (18). Brad Peacock (3-2, 4.30 ERA) pitches the opener against the Tigers after striking out a career-high 12 in seven scoreless innings Wednesday against Kansas City.

                        ON THE MEND

The injury-ravaged Yankees plan to activate center fielder Aaron Hicks when they return home to face Baltimore. Hicks hurt his back in spring training March 1 and needed two cortisone shots. He went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a homer for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, leaving him 3 for 18 in five minor league rehab games. The RailRiders were rained out Sunday. The 29-year-old Hicks agreed to a $70 million, seven-year contract in February.

New York also hopes to have catcher Gary Sanchez and infielder Gleyber Torres back in the lineup after both sat out Sunday. Sanchez was hit hard on his catching helmet by Guillermo Heredia's backswing Saturday night in the eighth inning but stayed in the game. Torres played Saturday, one day after getting hit by a pitch on the right elbow. The Yankees won two of three at Tampa Bay to move within a half-game of the first-place Rays in the AL East.

                        MILESTONE MAN

Arizona pitcher Robbie Ray needs six strikeouts against Pittsburgh to reach 800 for his career. He would become the second-fastest lefty to reach the plateau in terms of appearances (125), behind Frank Tanana (120). Ray also could be the third-fastest left-hander to 800 Ks in innings pitched, behind relievers Aroldis Chapman (480 2/3) and Billy Wagner (597 2/3). Ray has pitched 660 innings in six big league seasons with Detroit and Arizona. Right-hander Nick Kingham will make his second start since moving from the bullpen for the Pirates.
