    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

    The Athletic’s NBA Mock Draft

    1) Zion Williamson, Duke

    2) Ja Morant, Murray State

    3) RJ Barrett, Duke

    4) Darius Garland, Vanderbilt

    5) Jarrett Culver, Texas Tech

    6) De’Andre Hunter, Virginia

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Last year, the Arizona Cardinals spent a lot of $$$ on quarterbacks:
    — They paid Sam Bradford $16M; he played three games.
    — They paid Josh Rosen $11.5M; he lives in Miami now.
    — They paid Mike Glennon $5M; he lives in Oakland now.

Now the Cardinals’ QB’s are Kyler Murray, Brett Hundley and two guys I’ve never heard of, free agents from Murray State and Princeton. Kyler Murray better be the real deal.

    12) No idea how NFL teams will handle their rookie QB’s this year, but last season, all five first-round quarterbacks were playing by midseason, so there’s that.

    11) Interesting article in the Los Angeles Times about UCLA’s search for a new basketball coach; Bruins offered to double Jay Wright’s salary, but the Villanova coach turned them down. When a coach declines having his salary doubled, thats a major red flag.

Similar to Loyola coach Porter Moser turning down St John’s, when they offered to more than double his salary. Turning down a Big East job to stay at Loyola was an eye-opener.

    10) So far this baseball season, relief pitchers have a worse ERA than starting pitchers; that hasn’t happened over a full season in fifty years. Starting pitchers need to last longer in games; there is too much strain being put on bullpens.

    9) There are 127 I-A college football teams; for some reason, in 2020 there will be three new bowl games, bringing the total (for now) to 43.

Fenway Park, Myrtle Beach and the new dome in Los Angeles get the new bowl games; why do baseball stadiums in Boston/New York have bowl games? These games are in December; warm weather cities seem like a better bowl destination.

Do kids want to freeze their butts off in a bowl game? I think not.

With 43 bowls, teams with losing records will go to bowls, which also isn’t ideal.

    8) 233 players have declared for early entry to the NBA Draft; players have until late May to pull their names from the draft. NBA Draft is two rounds- 60 players get picked, so do the math, then add in the seniors who will also be involved.

If you’re not a first round pick, go back to school. Become a better player. Unless you want to play in the G-League or in Europe.

    7) Warriors 115, Rockets 109— Houston was +5 with Chris Paul on court. -11 in the 8:00 he sat out. Golden State leads series, 2-0.

Scott Foster was one of the refs for this game; Houston has now lost the last seven times Foster reffed their games, with six losses by 16+ points. Back in February. James Harden called Foster “rude and arrogant.” You would think the league would keep Foster away from the Rockets.

It was also mentioned that Golden State’s players aren’t crazy about Foster, either. There was a recent stretch where the road team had won 12 playoff games in a row worked by Foster.

With three refs working a game, I’m skeptical how much stats like this actually mean, but if the players think they matter, then they matter, whether they matter or not.

    6) Harden led the NBA in foul shots attempted in six of last seven years; he led the NBA in free throws made the last five years in a row. He is obviously used to getting calls.

    5) Baseball stuff:
    — Dodgers put OF AJ Pollock (elbow) on IL.
    — Nationals put 3B Anthony Rendon (elbow) on DL.
    — Padres put SS Fernando Tatis (hamstring) on DL
    — Mariners sent OF Mallex Smith to AAA because he can’t hit.

    4) Ranger College basketball coach Billy Gillispie was named JUCO Coach of the Year this week, after leading Ranger to a 31-4 record this year- they played in the NJCAA championship game.

The former head coach at Kentucky, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and UTEP, Gillispie returned to coaching this season after a kidney transplant. Good for him.

    3) Tim Mead was named this week as the new vice-president of National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Mead represented the Los Angels Angels for the last 40 years, under three owners, nine managers and six interim managers, last 22 years as the team’s vice president of communications.

Not often you see a guy get a new job, followed by a flood of 100% positive tweets giving the thumbs up to the hire. Everyone really likes this guy, so good for the Hall of Fame.

    2) Milwaukee Bucks are now 19-4 vs spread this season in the game following a loss.

    1) Wake Forest signed football coach Dave Clawson to an 8-year contract extension; Wake is the smallest school that has big-time college football. Tough job.

                  May Pitchers Report
                  May 1, 2019
                  By Marc Lawrence

The call to the post in the month of May signals the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. For baseball purists, May is simply the 2nd full month of the season as we head toward the sweltering days of summer. And for die-hard baseball fans that enjoy handicapping America’s pastime, it also signals the arrival of our annual May Good Month/Bad Month pitchers report.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of May. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in May, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each May over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record, we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s May list.

                  GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

                  *Greinke, Zack - 10-5 (7-2 H)

The 35-year old right-hander does not have the same zip on the fastball, but he does not walk hitters, allows less than a hit an inning and does not beat himself. The beat goes on for Greinke.

                  Happ, J.A. - 8-4 (5-2 H)

After a slow start with Yankees this season, Happ started heading back to career norms in his few starts in April. However, there is something not everyone realizes: he's had five straight years of 10+ wins.

                  *Kershaw, Clayton - 11-3 (5-1 A)

Like the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, Kershaw has been the best pitcher in baseball for a decade. A few recent injuries have some folks wanting to anoint others and the fact is he doesn't throw mid-90's anymore and he gives up a few more home runs. Still, the lefty is still among the best in the sport.

                  Miley, Wade - 8-4 (5-2 A)

Miley was basically a below average pitcher for the majority of his career. At 30-years old and becoming increasingly ineffective, Miley began learning to throw a 'cutter' in his bullpen work, seeing if it was worth a try and what do you, it worked. The lefthander has gone from a long reliever on bad teams to a solid back of the rotation starter on playoff contenders like Houston this year for example. Kudos to him.

                  *Price, David - 9-3 (5-0 H)

The Boston port-sider has made the transition from power pitcher to complete pitcher. With a quality of assortment of off-speed pitches, this has made his fastball appear quicker and he still has excellent movement on tosses down in the zone.

                  Rodriguez, Eduardo - 10-2 (6-1 A)

The Red Sox have always loved Rodriguez ability if not his results. After another typical slow start, the left-hander was sharper at the end of the month and he gave credit to teammate second baseman Dustin Pedroia for showing him a new grip for his curveball that gave him more downward movement. Let's see if that continues.

                  *Sale, Chris - 12-6 (6-3 A)

Chris Sale starts May 0-5 with an unthinkable 6.30 ERA. Sale's career ERA is below 3.00 and his velocity is down dramatically, 4 to 6 MPH on the heater, and nobody understands why other than possibly the postseason innings from last fall. A developing story for certain.

                  Scherzer, Max - 11-5 (6-2 H)

At 1-3 with an ERA of 4.12, are we seeing Scherzer starting to show the signs of age creeping up on him at 34? It's too early to say for sure but opposing batters are hitting .257 against Mad Max versus .223 - which is career number. Maybe Scherzer needs a little more time to settle in for 2019.

                  Severino, Luis - 11-5 (7-3 H)

On the 60-day IL and probably won't even start throwing until June.

                  Strasburg, Stephen - 15-1 (8-0 A)

Normally a fast starter, Strasburg stumbled at the start with an ERA of 5.56 after four outings. However, he must have sensed May was coming and allowed two runs in two starts over 15 innings, fanning 20, walking three, on just four hits. The right-hander is just money in May.

                  Wainwright, Adam - 10-2 (6-1 H)

The former St. Louis ace is not the same hurler at 37, yet, he's capable for five to six good innings for three to four starts out of every five made. To this point of the season, Wainwright has been much tougher in right-hand batters compared to lefty's (.223 vs .300 BA)

                  BAD MONTH PITCHERS

                  Urena, Jose - 3-9 (1-5 H)

Urena is pitching as poorly as the team he's on in Miami with a 1-4 record and a 5.08 ERA. He's permitted 43 hits on only 33.2 innings and opposing batters are knocking him around for a .300 BA and .353 OBP. Ouch!

                        STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                        STREAKING

Caleb Smith, Miami Marlins (2-0, 2.17 ERA, $230): On a day where Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and Corey Kluber among others are starting, our streaking starter is Miami’s Caleb Smith.

The 27-year-old left-hander has been outstanding this season and he’s been nearly unhittable over his last three starts, where he has a 1.00 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP, while limiting opponents to a .197 on base percentage. Smith will look to keep it rolling when Cleveland comes to town. The Marlins are currently +110 home dogs with a t total of 6.5.

                        SLUMPING

Jacob deGrom, New York Mets (2-3, 4.85 ERA, $-363): Has it really come to this? Our favorite son, the slumping starter? While we still have faith deGrom will bounce back, he is certainly working through a rough patch right now. The defending Cy Young Award winner has a 9.69 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP in over his past three starts.

While we are not ready to declare the death of deGrom Day just yet, (it is still 25-7 in his last 32 starts) we might have to be a little more selective going forward. Despite his struggles, deGrom and the Mets are -190 home faves today against the Reds with a total of 6.5. (The first five inning total is 3.5).

                        3 STRIKES

                        OVER UMPIRE

Over bettors have been licking their chops when they see when Paul Emmel is calling balls and strikes. The Over is a perfect 6-0 in the games he has been behind home plate this season and is 11-1 in his last 12 games dating back to last season. Emmel has a low 62.2 percent strike rate this season and has seen an average of 11.2 runs scored per game. He’ll be behind home plate in Arizona this afternoon when the Diamondbacks host the Yankees. The total is currently 8.

                        REVENGE ON HIS MIND

Defending Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, has his 2019 campaign off to another solid start, pitching to a 2.54 ERA and an 0.92 WHIP. But he’ll have revenge on his mind when he takes the mound today as he goes against a Royals team that got the better of him his last time out. Kansas City got to Snell for three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings pitched back on April 24. Snell is a hefty -225 road favorite for today’s matchup. With the Royals countering with Glen Sparkman consider the Rays on the runline here.

BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN HIM

When it comes to the Dodgers-Giants rivalry, it’s L.A. who has had more of the success of late, but that has never stopped Madison Bumgarner from showing up to these games. He loves facing the Dodgers. Especially at Dodger Stadium. Bumgarner has a 2.36 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in 20 starts there over the course of his career. Today, Bumgarner and the Giants are +125 home dogs with a total of 7, going up against the Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu.
