    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    — Celtics 110, Pacers 106— Boston sweeps series, 4-0.

    — Warriors 113, Clippers 105— Klay Thompson had 27 points at the half.

    — Trailblazers 111, Thunder 98— Russell Westbrook was 5-21 from the floor.

    — Sharks 2, Golden Knights 1 (2 OT)— Game 7 is Tuesday in San Jose.

    — Bruins 4, Maple Leafs 2— Game 7 is Tuesday in Boston.

    — Nets’ GM Sean Marks was suspended one game without pay, fined $25,000 for entering the refs’ locker room after Brooklyn’s 112-108 loss Saturday.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

    13) Philadelphia Eagles’ center Travis Kelce played LY with a broken foot, something he called a “torn elbow” (he wore a big brace), and a Grade 2 MCL tear.

Toronto pitcher Aaron Sanchez left Sunday’s game in Oakland with a broken right fingernail on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

    12) Jim Kaat and Bert Blyleven discussed pitching all weekend on Twins’ TV; Kaat said Sunday he thinks the strike zone is much tighter now than when he pitched.

Blyleven mentioned that back when he pitched, umpires weren’t graded on each pitch by MLB and that has changed how the game is called.

    11) Twins hit 11 home runs in their doubleheader sweep of the Orioles Saturday. Hard to believe Baltimore was in the playoffs only three years ago; their team is awful.

Baltimore’s AAA farm team is 7-10, their AA team is 3-13 and got shut out in both ends of a twin bill Saturday, so not sure where the Orioles’ help is going to come from.

    10) Indianapolis Colts’ owner Jim Irsay recently spent $718,750 for the piano John Lennon used to write songs for Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

    9) They run a commercial on Colorado Rockies games for University of Colorado health services; it shows an older fellow who struggles to get out of his easy chair, then starts to work out- they show pics in his house of him running when he was much younger.

They show the man’s name; he survived heart failure, and as he recovers, his treadmill workouts get more rigorous, and the commercial ends with him finishing a 2-mile run in a local race.

The commercial is so well-done and very inspirational; the guy should get a sneaker contract from Nike or adidas, and they should run that commercial during the Super Bowl.

    8) Christian Yelich is first player with 12+ homers in his team’s first 22 games since Alex Rodriguez in 2007.

    7) Baseball injuries:
    — Rays’ OF Austin Meadows (thumb) had an MRI.
    — Blue Jays put P Matt Shoemaker (knee) on IL; he tore his ACL and is out for the season.

    6) Merrill Kelly threw 109 pitches for Arizona Friday, but he didn’t finish the 4th inning. He got 18 called strikes, had 21 pitches fouled off, gave up six hits on 12 balls in play.

Funny thing, two of the three runs he gave up came on a harmless looking pop-up to short CF that the wind played games with and no one caught it.

    5) Detroit Pistons have lost 13 consecutive playoff games, tied for longest-ever streak in NBA.

    4) Seattle Mariners have already had five games with 4+ homers this year; all of last season, they had five games with 4+ home runs.

    3) Former major league OF Matt Holliday is retired now and lives in Stillwater, OK; he recently had a house built in Stillwater. The guy who built the house is Philly catcher JT Realmuto’s uncle. Small world.

    2) Good grief, the Utah Jazz uniforms are terrible. Like the old purple uniforms with the musical note on them that Pete Maravich wore for the Jazz back in the day.

    1) A comedian was elected president of Ukraine; I was going to make a joke about this, but then remembered who the president is here. Having a comedian as president wouldn’t be so bad.

            Ballpark Figures - Week 5
            Joe Williams

            Beer Battle

The Milwaukee Brewers will travel to meet the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium II on Monday, and the wind will be blowing out hard to left field at a 12-15 mph clip for the matchup between RHPs Adrian Houser and Jack Flaherty. Milwaukee heads into this one with a sparkling 20-7 mark in their past 27 games inside the division, and they're 19-9 in the past 28 games on the road. In addition, they're 9-2 in the past 11 road games against teams with a winning overall record. The Brew Crew is also an impressive 20-8 over their past 28 contests following a loss.

For the Cardinals, they're 9-4 in their past 13 games overall, while posting an 8-3 record across their past 11 games against teams with a winning record. With Flaherty on the mound, those winning ways will be put to the test. The Cardinals have dropped nine of the past 11 meetings with the Brewers, and they've lost four in a row at home to their division rivals. In addition, the Cards are 2-5 in their past seven starts against the Brewers.

            Looking Ahead

            Monday, April 22

The Twins and Astros tangle at Minute Maid Park in Houston to open a new set. The Twins have won four of their past five games, and they sit atop the AL Central with a plus-20 run differential. They have won four of thep ast five on the road, too, but that will be put to the test with RHP Jake Odorizzi on the bump. Minnesota has won just one of Odorizzi's past nine road outings, and they're 1-10 in the past 11 road contests against teams with a winning record. They're also 0-5 in the past five vs. AL West foes. The Astros have won 19 of the past 26 at home, and they're 6-1 in Brad Peacock's past seven outings, and 4-1 in his past five against winning teams, too. The Twins have won just three of the past 15 meetings overall, and they're 0-4 in the past four at the Juice Box. The under is also 4-1 in the past five in Houston, and 6-2 in the past eight meetings overall in this series.

It's a matchup of Rangers LHP Mike Minor and Athletics RHP Chris Bassitt in Oakland. The Rangers streak into this one with victories in six of their past seven games against divisional foes, and they're 5-1 in the past six outings against right-handed starting pitching. They're also 6-1 in Minor's past seven inside the division, while going 8-2 in his past 10 outings against teams with a losing overall record. The A's are 7-1 in their past eight vs. LHP, and 5-0 in the past five at home against southpaws. However, while they're 4-0 in Bassitt's past four starts, they're just 2-5 in his past seven at home and 2-5 in his past seven against winning teams, too. This series has been tilted in Oakland's favor recently, as the Rangers are just 2-10 in the past 12 meetings overall, and 5-16 in their past 21 trips to Oakland. The over has cashed in five straight meetings in this series, too.

            Weather Report

In New York, the Mets and Phillies face a 40 percent or greater chance of rain through 10 p.m. ET. They might get this one in after a lengthy delay. For the Tigers-Red Sox game in Boston, there is a 70 percent chance of rain throughout the day, so you can expect a postponement in this one. If they do play, the wind is blowing in 11-14 mph from center field to home plate. The Brewers and Cardinals will see a strong breeze at 10-13 mph to left field, so watch the over.

            Tuesday, April 23

The Giants open an interleague road series against the Blue Jays, and they have managed just four wins in 13 road contests, while posting a minus-13 run differential overall. The Jays have won a season-high four in a row, and they have turned things around with a plus-7 run differential. San Francisco has posted a poor 3-8 in the past 11 against AL East foes, while going 2-6 in the past eight interleague games against a right-handed starter. They're also 2-5 in the past seven interleague road games overall. In addition, they're 0-6 in the past six road outings by RHP Jeff Samardzija, and 2-9 in his past 11 starts overall. The Jays are also 12-4 in their past 16 home interleague games, and 11-5 in the past 15 interleague home outings vs. RHP. However, they're 0-4 in RHP Trent Thornton's past four starts.

The Phillies and Mets square off on Tuesday with RHP Zach Eflin and RHP Zack Wheeler battling it out for Zach/Zack bragging rights. The Phils have won just one of Eflin's past nine road outings, although they're 8-3 in his past 11 against teams with a winnin record. The Mets are 12-5 in Wheeler's past 17 starts overall, while going 6-1 in his past seven against teams with a winning record, and 8-3 in his past 11 outings inside the division. The Mets are also 6-2 in his past eight home outings, too. The over has cashed in six of Wheeler's past eight starts agaisnt the Phils, who are just 3-7 in their past 10 battles at Citi Field.

The high-flying Mariners, who have a plus-32 run differential, which is second-best in the AL. The M's also enter 9-1 in the past 10 road games, and 8-2 in the past 10 games vs. LHP. However, Seattle enters 0-7 in the past seven against winning teams and 0-5 in their past five interleague games. The Padres have managed a 1-6 record in the past seven overall, and 1-6 in the past seven vs. RHP. San Diego has won four in a row in this interleague series, however, with the over 6-2-1 in the past nine battles.

            Weather Report

In Cleveland, the Marlins and Indians will face a stiff wind blowing out 15-18 mph to the right-center field power alley. The winds will be blowing from first to third base for the Braves-Reds battle. In the Steel City, the Diamondbacks and Pirates will be dealing with some light rain. If they do play, they will see a 10-13 mph wind blowing out to the left-center field power alley. Those are the only weather trouble sports, however.

                  STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                  STREAKING

Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies (3-1, 2.25 ERA, $152):
Four starts into 2019 and it looks like Arrieta might have rediscovered his form with the Cubs from a few years ago. Arrieta has been a workhorse for the Phillies, throwing 213 pitches over 15 innings in his last two starts, and giving up just two runs in that span. Arrieta has begun to rely more on his changeup, adding another option to an arsenal that already includes a sinker, slider and curveball.

Tonight Arrieta and the Phillies will be facing off against Steven Matz and the New York Mets in a pick'em game.

                  SLUMPING

Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox (0-4, 8.50 ERA, -$726):
After inking a $145 million extension last month, Sale has gone from ace to absolute disaster. Sale's WHIP is at 1.56 and opposing batters are hitting .311 against him this year, almost 100 points higher than his career average of .219. Sale's four-seam fastball which made batters miss for more than half a decade, has lost velocity. It used to be in the 95-97 mph range and this season has been between 91-92, a world of difference that is allowing batters to catch up to it.

After shoulder problems in 2018, it's possible that the left-hander is still on the mend. Regardless of the reason he needs to turn things around and he'll get a good chance to do so today against a Detroit Tigers lineup batting just .218.

                  3 STRIKES

                  ADVANTAGE IN APRIL

In an article we wrote at the beginning of the month, we featured Jeremy Hellickson as one of the best pitchers to bet on in April. After a rough season debut in relief, he's pitched a pair of gems as a starter, giving up just two runs over 11.2 innings in those two games. Hellickson takes the mound for Washington tonight against the Rockies. He might only get a couple more starts in April, so now might be a good time to put a few dollars down on him.

Also consider the Under 11 for the game in Colorado, considering the inflated totals at Coors Field and the tendency for games played there to lean towards the Under.

SURF AND TURF IN TAMPA BAY

As if today's matchup between the 7-15 Kansas City Royals and the 14-8 Tampa Bay Rays couldn't get any more one-sided, the surface at Tropicana Field provides yet another betting edge for the -185 home faves.

The Rays are 54-25 in their last 79 games on astroturf, while the Royals are 0-7 in their previous seven games on astroturf. Kansas City is also 0-8 in the last eight games of the head-to-head series.

                  HOW YOU DOIN'?

Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo has been on a tear recently, batting .478 over his last six games with four homers and 11 RBI. Tonight, Gallo and Texas will go up against Oakland A's right-hander Chris Bassitt who will be making his season debut. Gallo has -125 odds to get a hit today and +190 odds to drill a homerun.
