13) So far this spring. UNLV fired Marvin Menzies and Vanderbilt fired Bryce Drew, both after their third season at that school, after seasons where their best player didn’t play after Christmas. Here are the details:

The Under First 5 Innings went 23-4 in Jacob deGrom's last 27 starts last season. Will that trend roll over to 2019?

Winter is finally over. Which means baseball is back and MLB bettors can rejoice. That also means the return of our famous MLB Daily Line Drive, in which we will break down the odds, streaking and slumping starters, trends and much more, plus give you our best bets every day of the Big League season. Here is our MLB Daily Line Drive for Opening Day 2019.

DOUBLE-PLAY PICKS

NEW YORK METS vs WASHINGTON NATIONALS (-141, 6.5)

Those of you familiar with Line Drive, you’ll know that Opening Day this year means one thing, and one thing only…

IT’S JACOB DEGROM DAY!

We welcome back one of the most profitable baseball bets in recent memory. The Under first five innings in Jacob deGrom starts. The Mets and deGrom were a perfect storm for this bet. deGrom was spectacular on his way to the Cy Young Award, while the Mets were one of the worst hitting teams in baseball. As a result, the Under first five innings went 23-4 (85.2 percent) in his last 27 starts last season.

deGrom had a historic season in 2018, pitching to a ridiculous 2.67 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP while striking out 269 batters compared to 46 walks. He also limited batters to a .196 average and a .521 OPS. In the first five innings of games those numbers shrunk to a 1.52 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP and a .181 opponent batting average.

Now, the Mets did attempt to upgrade their offense this offseason bringing in Robinson Cano, Jed Lowrie and Wilson Ramos. But, none of those guys inspire that much confidence. We’ll need to see it before we can believe it when it comes to the Mets’ offense.

Oh, and did we mention? Some guy named Max Scherzer is starting for the Nationals. We heard he’s pretty good.

PICK: Under 3.5 First Five Innings (-130)

CHICAGO CUBS vs TEXAS RANGERS (+115, 9.5)

Life is tougher these days for the “Loveable Losers.” Expectations have grown since their 2016 world championship, and despite winning 187 games the last two seasons, not getting back to the Fall Classic has got to be a bit of a disappointment.

But there is no reason to think the Cubs won’t be in the mix for another National League Pennant in 2019. They trot out basically the same team they have the last couple of seasons and the rotation could be improved with a healthy Yu Darvish and a full season of Cole Hamels.

The Cubs open the season with an interleague matchup in Arlington, Texas where they’ll hand the ball to Jon Lester. Lester is a gamer who will be making his fourth consecutive Opening Day start for the Cubs against a Rangers team that is in Year 1 of its rebuild.

Lester was solid in 2018, posting a 3.32 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP, but he was more comfortable away from the “Friendly Confines.” On the road Lester went 11-2 with a 2.87 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He faces a Rangers lineup that is also mostly the same as last season and ranked 21st in average and OPS versus lefties.

Texas counters with Mike Minor. The lefty had a solid if unspectacular year in 2018 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. The Cubs ranked sixth in average and OBP against south paws a year ago. Take the Cubbies to start 2019 on the right note.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

STREAKING

Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays (2018: 21-5, 1.89 ERA, $1,474): When you’re talking about streaking starters heading into a new season there’s no better place to start than the reigning Cy Young Award winner. Snell had a tremendous year for the Rays, pitching to a ridiculous 1.89 ERA, an 0.97 WHIP, good for a 20-5 record. He also led the AL in homer runs per nine innings.

He was even better at Tropicana Field, where he went 10-1 with a 1.27 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP. He’s in tough on Opening Day facing off against Just Verlander and the Astros. The Rays are currently +120 home dogs with a total of 6.5.

SLUMPING

Carlos Rodon, Chicago White Sox (2018: 6-8, 4.18 ERA, $66): The Pale Hose young south paw looked like 2018 was going to be his breakout year, then September happened. In Rodon’s final six starts of last season he pitched to a 9.22 ERA with a 2.12 WHIP.

Maybe the slog of another losing season got him down late in the year and could bounce back to start the season. Rodon and the White Sox are slight -105 favorites when they visit the Royals, with a total of 8.5.

Quickly today, there are notable hitter’s winds at Yankee Stadium, Citizens Bank Park in Philly and the Oakland Coliseum. While there will be expected pitcher’s winds at Globe Life Park in Arlington and Petco Park in San Diego.

POSH PINSTRIPES

The Yankees are massive -375 favorites for their home opener against the Orioles. That is the largest moneyline favorite on Opening Day since 2005. In fact, there has only been one other Opening Day over that span to close as a moneyline favorite greater than -300 and that was the Los Angeles Dodgers who closed as -355 favorites for their home opener against the Padres in 2017. It should be noted however, the Yankees were moneyline favorites of -300 or greater 13 times last season and only went 7-6.
