    • Sunday’s 6-pack

Top six picks for Week 5 in Westgate Super Contest:

      6) Ravens -3 (757)-

      5) Packers +3.5 (781)-

      4) Patriots +15.5 (783)-

      3) Buccaneers +3.5 (800)-

      2) Vikings -5.5 (951)-

      1) Bears -5.5 (1,299)-

      2019 record: 13-11

      Quote of the Day
“This is a results-based business. When you take these (GM) positions and certainly the position I’m in, you have to have thick skin and be prepared for the criticism that, quite frankly, a lot of times it’s accurate……the wins aren’t there right now, which is not acceptable. But at the same time I do see some good things going on and I am glad we made some of the decisions we made this offseason.”
      Arizona Cardinals’ GM Steve Keim

      Sunday’s quiz
Who did the Tampa Bay Rays play the one time they made the World Series?

      Saturday’s quiz
Phil Mickelson is the only pro golfer ever to win $1M+ on the PGA Tour 20 years in a row.

      Friday’s quiz
In all of MINOR league baseball this season, 31 no-hitters were thrown.

      *************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday…….

      13) Virginia Tech 42, Miami 35— Hokies led 28-0 when Miami scored a 44-yard TD on the last play of the first half; Hurricanes tied game 35-all when they scored a TD with 3:16 left in the game, but missed the go-ahead PAT.

Tech then drove 63 yards on five plays for a TD and their first ACC win in three tries.

Miami is 1-3 vs I-A teams, with all four games decided by 7 or fewer points.

      12) Navy 34, Air Force 25— Trends are fun and all, but under is now 33-9-1 in the last 43 games between the service academies. This game went over by a decent amount.

      11) Speaking of the academies, Army (23-1) scored the first TD of the day, so if you bet them to score the day’s first TD, a prop bet at the SouthPoint, your day started out very well.

      10) Texas (-11) 42, West Virginia 31— Mountaineers scored with 0:48 left, pushing the spread; over last 11 years, Texas is now 0-10-1 ATS the week before playing Oklahoma.

This game was closer than the score indicates; WVU outgained the Longhorns 463-407, but they were only 4-14 on 3rd down, Texas was 10-18— Mountaineers turned ball over four times (-3).

      9) Florida 24, Auburn 13— Rough day for Auburn’s freshman QB Nix, who was 11-27/145 passing with three INT’s. Florida kept the Tigers in the game by losing five fumbles (-2 in TO’s). Gators outgained Auburn 382-241, teams combined to convert only 6-29 on third down.

      8) Iowa State 49, TCU 24— Cyclones have covered their last eight October games.

      7) Upsets:
      — Virginia Tech (+14) 42, Miami 35
      — Texas Tech (+10) 45, Oklahoma State 35
      — Georgia State (+7) 52, Arkansas State 38
      — Central Michigan (+6) 42, Eastern Michigan 16
      — Oregon State (+6) 48, UCLA 31
      — Ball State (+5) 27, Northern Illinois 20

      6) SMU 43, Tulsa 37 OT— Mustangs were down 30-9 after the 3rd quarter, but won in OT after tying the game with 1:02 left in regulation. Rough night for Tulsa’s kicker, who missed three FG’s and an extra point.

      5) Louisville 41, Boston College 39— Total yardage was 664-563, Louisville; they kicked a 41-yard FG with 1:13 left for the win. BC QB Grosel completed only 9-24 passes, but threw three TD’s. Eagles lost three of their last four games— they lost last two by total of five points.

      4) Arizona 35, Colorado 30— Total yardage was 496-487 Colorado, but they kicked three FG’s and scored three TD’s, while Arizona scored five TD’s.

Not sure why Colorado fired Mike MacIntyre as coach LY, but they did; I’m thinking they made a mistake, but thats their business, not mine.

      3) Oregon State 48, UCLA 31— Beavers led this game 21-0 after 6:01 of play; UCLA is now 1-4, and they trailed 49-17 in the one game they won.

      2) Cincinnati 27, UCF 24— Knights turned ball over four times (-3); Gabriel was 25-46/297 passing but threw three INT’s- Davis caught 13 balls for 170 yards for UCF, in a losing cause.

      1) There are a few teams that are so terrible you should never even think about wagering on them; UMass, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, UNLV.

        October 5, 2019
        By The Associated Press

        STARS

-Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin, ran for 186 yards and accounted for five TDs, helping the eighth-ranked Badgers coast to a 48-0 win over Kent State.

-Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma, threw for 228 yards and accounted for four TDs in the No. 6 Sooners' 45-20 blowout of Kansas.

-J.K. Dobbins, Ohio State, rushed for 172 yards and a TD, and the No. 4 Buckeyes overcame a sluggish start to roll over No. 25 Michigan State 34-10.

-Rodney Smith, Minnesota, ran for a career-best 211 yards and a TD to help the Gophers beat Illinois 40-17.

-Khalil Tate, Arizona, threw for 404 yards and three TDs in his return from a leg injury to lead the Wildcats to a 35-30 win over Colorado.

-Joe Burrow, LSU, became the first quarterback in program history to eclipse 300 yards passing in four straight games and threw for five TDs to help the fifth-ranked Tigers defeat Utah State 42-6.

-Sam Howell, North Carolina, threw for 396 yards and four TDs in a 38-22 victory over Georgia Tech.

-Jack Cook, Dayton, threw four of his school-record six TD passes to Adam Trautman in a 56-28 win over Jacksonville.

-Chase Cookus, Northern Arizona, threw for 406 yards and five TDs to help the Lumberjacks beat Northern Colorado 41-23.

-Tyrece Nick, South Carolina State, threw for a career-high five TDs in a38-24 win over Delaware State.

-Ian Book, Notre Dame, threw a career-high five TD passes and had only four incompletions in a little more than two quarters in the No. 9 Fighting Irish's 52-0 victory over Bowling Green.

-Aqeel Glass, Alabama A&M, threw for 377 yards and four TDs in a 35-28 win over Texas Southern.

        ---

        MEAN WOLVERINES

Leaning on a sack-making, turnover-producing defense, No. 19 Michigan earned a desperately needed win.

Zach Charbonnet ran for a 2-yard touchdown to give the Wolverines an early double-digit lead and their defense did the rest in a 10-3 win over No. 14 Iowa, forcing four turnovers and tallying eight sacks.

The Wolverines were held scoreless over the final three quarters because they could not run or pass effectively, scoring just three points off the Hawkeyes' turnovers.

Iowa failed to take advantage of favorable field position on its final two drives with a chance to extend the game or possibly win it with a touchdown and 2-point conversion.

        ---

        PERINE'S PAYBACK

Lamical Perine was too slow to play for Auburn three years ago, a hurtful evaluation that's stuck with him.

He showed plenty of speed while running away from the Tigers - and a few guys he played against in high school - in the Swamp.

Perine broke loose for an 88-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, Florida's defense delivered another gem and the No. 10 Gators beat seventh-ranked Auburn 24-13 in a matchup of unbeaten teams.

Perine broke linebacker K.J. Britt's tackle at the line of scrimmage and scampered down the sideline for the program's longest TD run in more than 30 years. It gave the Gators (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) extra breathing room in a game they never trailed.

Doing it against Auburn was extra special.

        ---

        NUMBERS

15-Wins with no losses all-time by San Diego against Marist after a 31-7 victory.

21-Years since Tulane last opened 4-1.

33-Straight games with a TD pass by Oregon's Justin Hebert.

413-Yards rushing by Mississippi in its 31-6 win over Vanderbilt, the Rebels' most in an SEC game since 1979.

        ---

        SMU COMEBACK

SMU needed a massive comeback to remain undefeated.

Shane Buechele threw a 25-yard touchdown to James Proche in the third overtime and the No. 24 Mustangs beat Tulsa 43-37, coming back from a three-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter to win in its first game as a ranked team in 33 years.

After Tulsa missed its second field goal in overtime, Proche made a leaping catch in the front corner of the end zone over a defender and got a foot down before going out of bounds. The play was initially ruled incomplete before being overturned on replay review.

SMU this week moved into the AP poll for the first time since October 1986, before NCAA sanctions that included the death penalty. The Mustangs didn't field a team in 1987 and 1988.

              • 7 2-out runs in 6th lift LA past Nats 10-4 for 2-1 NLDS lead
                October 6, 2019

WASHINGTON (AP) Justin Turner's homer capped a startling and record-setting seven-run rally in the sixth inning as the Dodgers roughed up starter-turned-reliever Patrick Corbin, and Los Angeles beat the Washington Nationals 10-4 on Sunday night to take a 2-1 lead in their NL Division Series.

Russell Martin and pinch-hitter Kike Hernandez added a pair of two-run doubles in the sixth as LA became the first team in major league history to score that many runs in one postseason inning with two outs and two strikes.

The Dodgers can advance to the NL Championship Series for the fourth consecutive year by closing the best-of-five NLDS in Game 4 at Washington on Monday, when LA sends Rich Hill to the mound against Max Scherzer.

The Dodgers entered the sixth trailing 2-1 after Juan Soto's two-run homer for Washington off eventual winner Hyun-Jin Ryu in the first and Max Muncy's solo shot off Anibal Sanchez in the fifth.

Sanchez, who struck out nine, was replaced for the sixth by $140 million lefty Corbin, who hadn't made a relief appearance since 2017. He was charged with six runs.

Martin tacked on a two-run homer in the ninth.

Braves rally in 9th, beat Cardinals 3-1

ST. LOUIS (AP) Through injuries and slumps, demotions and disappointments, Dansby Swanson and Adam Duvall got ready for the big moment.

When it arrived, they were ready.

Swanson hit a tying double with two outs in the ninth inning and Duvall delivered a two-run single as the Atlanta Braves rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 on Sunday to take a 2-1 lead in the NL Division Series.

''They never quit. They never give up,'' Braves manager Brian Snitker said. ''The heart and desire and will is unbelievable in those guys.''

Atlanta had managed just four hits off Adam Wainwright and Andrew Miller before breaking through against closer Carlos Martinez. With runners on the corners, Swanson tied it at 1 with a drive off the wall in left.

Swanson pumped his arms as he celebrated after his third hit of the game . He came through after an intentional walk to Brian McCann - Swanson's .187 batting average with runners in scoring position was the lowest in the majors this year among qualified players.

''I love Dansby in those situations. I always have,'' Snitker said. ''That kid lives for that moment.''

Watching the inning develop, Swanson said he thought he might get a chance to bat in a big spot.

''In those situations, you just try and breathe and relax,'' said Swanson, who missed the playoffs last year because of an injured left hand. ''It's easier said than done.''

Duvall, who entered in the eighth, then hit a liner into center field to put the Braves ahead to stay. It was his second big hit of the series after he connected for a pinch-hit homer in Atlanta's 3-0 victory Friday.

''I'll be ready whenever they need me,'' said Duvall, who spent much of the year with Triple-A Gwinnett.

Game 4 is Monday at Busch Stadium. Atlanta needs one more win to advance to the NL Championship Series for the first time since 2001.

This is the first time the Braves have led a postseason series since they were up 2-1 on San Francisco in the 2002 NLDS. They lost the final two games that year.

''History, we don't really play into that. This is now,'' Swanson said.

St. Louis wasted a terrific performance by Wainwright, who pitched 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball in his first postseason start since 2014. The 38-year-old Georgia native and former Braves draft pick struck out eight and walked two.

In the age of bullpens taking over in October, Wainwright and Mike Soroka locked up in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel. But the relievers ultimately decided the game.

''We were one out away and that is exactly what playoff baseball is all about,'' Wainwright said. ''Just crazy stuff happens.''

Wainwright departed after he walked Ozzie Albies on his 120th pitch, loading the bases in the first playoff game in St. Louis in four years. He got a big hug on the mound from catcher Yadier Molina and the sellout crowd of 46,701 saluted Wainwright with a standing ovation as he walked to the dugout.

Miller then came in and retired Freddie Freeman on a flyball to center, preserving a 1-0 lead.

But Martinez was hit hard for the second time in the series. He allowed three runs before he closed out St. Louis' 7-6 victory in Game 1.

''There were some pitches that didn't go where they were supposed to go,'' he said through a translator.

After Atlanta grabbed the lead, Mark Melancon worked the ninth for his second save of the playoffs. Paul Goldschmidt doubled with one out, but Marcell Ozuna struck out looking and Molina lined out to end the game.

''Being able to compete in a game like that is amazing,'' Swanson said.

The 22-year-old Soroka was almost as good as Wainwright, pitching seven innings of two-hit ball in his postseason debut.

St. Louis jumped in front when Ozuna doubled in the second, advanced to third on Molina's grounder and scored on Matt Carpenter's sacrifice fly .

After Soroka departed, the Cardinals threatened in the eighth. But pinch-runner Harrison Bader was caught trying to steal third ahead of Jose Martinez's pinch-hit single, and Sean Newcomb retired Dexter Fowler to end the inning.

''I thought it was a good time for me to go,'' Bader said. ''You just stay on the aggressive side and unfortunately it didn't work out.''

                OZZIE AND WHITEY

Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith threw a ceremonial first pitch to current Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong. Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog also was on the field before the game after he had a minor stroke last month.

                UP NEXT

Dakota Hudson will start Game 4 for the Cardinals. The rookie right-hander is making his postseason debut after going 16-7 with a 3.35 ERA this season.

Snitker said he wasn't ready to announce his starter for Game 4. One possible option is bringing back Dallas Keuchel on short rest after he pitched 4 2/3 innings in series opener Thursday.

                    • LEADING OFF: All 4 Division Series matchups could be decided
                      October 6, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

                      REMEMBER ME?

Charlie Morton helped Houston achieve the ultimate prize in 2017, winning Game 7 of the AL Championship Series with a sharp start against the Yankees and then winning Game 7 of the World Series in relief against the Dodgers. This time, he hopes to prevent the Astros from advancing.

Signed by Tampa Bay last winter, Morton starts Game 3 in the best-of-five AL Division Series at Tropicana Field with his team down 2-0 to the Astros. Morton beat Oakland in last week's AL wild-card matchup.

Morton faced his former team twice during the regular season, winning at home 4-2 on March 29 and losing 15-1 at Houston on Aug. 27.

''For me, there's really no mystery with the Astros. It's just kind of they are who they are to me. I mean, I know those guys pretty well, on and off the field,'' Morton said. ''I'm well aware of the challenges they present. I know what they're made of. I'm just going to go out there ... and try to make pitches and challenge them.''

Zack Greinke pitches for Houston, following dominant starts by teammates Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole in the first two games. Greinke is 8-1 with 3.02 ERA in 10 starts since being acquired by the Astros from Arizona at the trade deadline. In his last start, the right-hander came within two outs of throwing a no-hitter against Seattle.

                      WAIT AND SEE

The Braves are one win from reaching the NL Championship Series for the first time since 2001. Who they'll send to the mound at Busch Stadium trying to wrap it up, they're not ready to say.

''We really haven't had a chance - when I get back in there, things will calm down and we'll talk about that,'' manager Brian Snitker said after Atlanta rallied in the ninth inning to beat St. Louis 3-1 on Sunday for a 2-1 lead in the NLDS.

One possible option is bringing back Dallas Keuchel on short rest after he pitched 4 2/3 innings in series opener Thursday.

Dakota Hudson will start Game 4 for the Cardinals. The rookie right-hander is making his postseason debut after going 16-7 with a 3.35 ERA this year.

                      YANKED

Hammered in two games at Yankee Stadium, the Twins try to avoid elimination in the ALDS when Jake Odorizzi (15-7, 3.51 ERA) faces New York.

The Yankees outscored Minnesota 18-6 in taking a 2-0 lead. If the Twins get swept, they would tie the North American major pro league record of 16 straight postseason losses, set by the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks from 1975-79. Minnesota's last 12 postseason defeats have all been against New York.

Luis Severino starts for New York. The 25-year-old All-Star didn't make his regular-season debut until Sept. 17, spending most of the year rehabbing a lat muscle injury sustained while warming up for his first spring training start.

Severino joked he doesn't remember his first career start in the playoffs, when he allowed three runs to the Twins in 2017 while getting just one out in a wild-card game the Yankees rallied. He beat Cleveland in the 2017 ALDS but gave up six runs over three innings in a loss to Boston in the Division Series last year. Overall, he's 1-2 with a 6.26 ERA in the postseason.

                      MAXED UP

Washington ace Max Scherzer is set to start Game 4 of the NL Division Series - no more mystery or intrigue.

The Nationals originally had said Scherzer was expected to pitch Game 3 Sunday night. But during the day, they announced Anibal Sanchez would make the start - Los Angeles won 10-4 for a 2-1 lead in the matchup.

Scherzer was summoned from the bullpen by manager Dave Martinez in Game 2. The three-time Cy Young Award winner struck out all three batters he faced in Washington's 4-2 victory at Dodger Stadium on Friday night.

''We talked after the game. Throwing Sanchez Game 3 and letting me get an extra day would probably be the best thing for me and for the team,'' Scherzer said Sunday. ''So that was Davey's decision, and it's Davey's call.''

Rich Hill starts for the Dodgers. He overcame knee trouble in September to put himself in position to pitch.

                      • Morton, Rays try to prevent a sweep
                        October 6, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Charlie Morton hopes to start the Tampa Bay Rays' comeback in the AL Division Series against the Astros, two years after pitching Houston to its first championship.

''We've leaned on him so heavily, and he's kind of risen to every challenge, every task we ask,'' manager Kevin Cash said Sunday.

After getting Verlandered and Coled by the Astros' aces, the wild-card Rays trail 2-0 in the best-of-five series, which resumes Monday at Tropicana Field. Summer acquisition Zack Greinke starts for Houston, trying to reach its third straight AL Championship Series.

Morton won Game 7 of the 2017 AL Championship against the New York Yankees, starting with five scoreless innings, then won Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers by allowing one run over the last four innings. He beat Oakland in last week's AL wild-card matchup to improve to 3-0 with a 0.64 ERA in winner-take-all games.

He faced his former team twice during the regular season, winning at home 4-2 on March 29 and losing 15-1 at Houston on Aug. 27.

''You play team like the Astros the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Dodgers, and there's a mystique and about them. You know that those teams are really good,'' Morton said.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch played down the significance of facing one of his former pitchers in such an important game.

''We've been through that. I don't think it changes a ton other than the stage is a little bigger,'' Hinch said.

''I mean, obviously, we will always remember him fondly and with good memories. He's done a lot in this organization,'' the manager added. ''But I think we're at the time of the year where we can get past that pretty quickly.''

Morton is 3-2 in eight career postseason appearances.

''We're going to ask another big one of him ... and have all the confidence in the world he can go out there and give us an opportunity to quiet a really good offense,'' Cash added, ''and let our offense find a way to get going.''

Tampa Bay struck out 23 times while scoring one run with five hits over 14 2/3 innings against Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole in the first two games. The Rays are hitting .177 with two extra-base hits overall.

''What we've seen the last two games against Houston, they had it on their side with Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole. They've kind of been there, done that - both of them,'' Cash said. ''Now we've got a guy that the irony is that he was a part of that group, but he's doing it in a Rays uniform now. So that helps.''

Tampa Bay is in the playoffs for the first time since 2013, when the Rays made the last of four postseason appearances within a six-season span under former manager Joe Maddon.

Centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier is the only player remaining on the roster from that team, however Cash said there's enough experience in the clubhouse that the young Rays understand that the team's singular focus right now has to be Game 3 - not what it will take to rally and win the series.

Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner, is 8-1 with 3.02 ERA in 10 starts since being acquired by the Astros at the trade deadline. In his last regular start, the right-hander came within two out of throwing a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners.

Cash said facing Greinke will be different, though not any easier, than going against Verlander and Cole.

''He's just as good as them, he just gets there in a different way,'' the Rays manager said. ''He doesn't have the power, but what he lacks with the power with the fastball, her certainly can mix pitches with the best of them. Very, very unpredictable.''

Meanwhile, the Astros believe their experience in playing potential elimination games will be beneficial with the series shifting to Tropicana Field.

''One of the things I take the most pride in is our ability to stay in the moment and just play today's game,'' Hinch said. ''And we're not celebrating until we get three wins in this series. We're not going to take it for granted. We know across the way those guys are really good and they know how to win. This is a tough place to play.''

                        • Severino fresh as Yankees try to sweep Twins again
                          October 6, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Luis Severino certainly should be fresh when he tries to lead the New York Yankees to yet another Division Series sweep of the Minnesota Twins.

The 25-year-old right-hander didn't make his regular-season debut until Sept. 17, spending most of the year rehabbing a lat muscle injury sustained while warming up for his first spring training start.

''I never thought about this situation, but I thought it was going to be something similar, getting healthy, and I'll be back to help my team in a situation like this,'' Severino said Sunday. ''I think I came back at the right moment to help my team.''

New York takes a 2-0 lead into Monday night's game at Target Field, tying to sweep a best-of-five series from the Twins for the third straight time after 3-0 victories in 2009 and 2010. The Yankees also beat the Twins in the 2017 wild-card game, part of Minnesota's misery in the postseason. If the Twins get swept, they would tie the North American major pro league record of 16 consecutive postseason defeats, set by the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks from 1975-79. Minnesota's last 12 postseason defeats have all been against New York.

Jake Odorizzi (15-7) starts for the Twins after being skipper over for Game 2 in favor of rookie Randy Dobnak.

''We got punched in the mouth a couple times in New York, but the thing about it is we have pride to punch back,'' Twins reliever Trevor May said.

New York won 103 games, its highest total in a decade, despite missing its ace for most of the season. Manager Aaron Boone monitored video of Severino's three minor league rehab appearances, which started Sept. 1.

Severino returned to the Yankees with four scoreless innings at home against the Los Angeles Angels.

''You know there's going to be some emotions there,'' Boone said. ''I thought he did a really nice job of kind of controlling his emotions, himself, being real clean in his delivery, and as a result, he commanded the ball, yes, but he also had the velo we normally see with him. The stuff was coming out like it does for Sevy, and it made me feel really good about where he was at that point in the season.''

A two-time All-Star, Severino hopes to get the backing of an offense that outscored Minnesota 18-6 in the first two games.

His fastball has averaged 96 mph, down 2 mph from last year, but Severino has pitched just 12 innings. He was 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA, topping out at 80 pitches over five shutout innings against Toronto.

''He's been our ace for years now,'' Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge said. ''Excited to see him going for Game 3, especially since we have this two-game lead right now. It was really important winning those two at home. It just kind of sets us up in a good position, especially with Sevy going. He's been throwing the ball well. He's had a lot of time off. I think he's fresh and ready to go.''

Severino joked he doesn't remember his first start in the playoffs, when he allowed three runs to the Twins in 2017 while getting just one out in a game the Yankees rallied to win 8-4. He beat Cleveland in the 2017 Division Series but gave up six runs over three innings in a loss to Boston in the Division Series last year. Overall, he's 1-2 with a 6.26 ERA in the postseason.

''You talked about Minnesota, but then last year, he pitched the wild card game and pitched great for us,'' Boone said, recalling Severino's four scoreless innings against Oakland. ''So, I expect him to handle it. I mean, this is a guy with loads of talent and the ability to go out there and pitch at a very high level. I think he expects that of himself, and I think he will handle it.''

Minnesota lost three consecutive games just twice all season. While the Twins (307) and Yankees (306) are the teams with the most home runs, Severino seems prepared.

''They haven't hit a homer against me yet,'' he said. ''I try to do my best to get the ball down, to get the ball down on the ground to hit more ground balls and flyballs. I will do my best to try to get hitters out of the way quickly and not throw it to the middle of the plate.''

                          • AP source: Joe Maddon to interview for Angels' manager job
                            October 6, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Joe Maddon will interview for the Los Angeles Angels' managerial vacancy this week, a person familiar with the process told The Associated Press,

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because the Angels aren't publicizing their search. ESPN first reported the interview.

Maddon is considered the prohibitive front-runner to replace Brad Ausmus, who was fired after one season in charge. The Angels finished 72-90, their worst record since 1999.

Maddon spent 31 years employed by the Angels as a player and a coach throughout the organization. He was Mike Scioscia's bench coach with the 2002 World Series champions before leaving for managerial jobs in Tampa Bay and Chicago, where he won the World Series in 2016. He was let go by Chicago on the final day of the regular season.

Despite the Cubs' post-championship disappointments over the past three years, Maddon remains regarded as one of baseball's top managers. His teams have made eight playoff appearances, including four straight in Chicago before this season's 84-win team finished third in the NL Central.

Maddon worked under five managers with the Angels, and he served two stints as the club's interim manager. He was there for the disappointing seasons of the 1990s, and he was at Scioscia's side in the 2000s during their growth into a perennial playoff team that won the franchise's only championship.

Now 65, Maddon kept a home in the Los Angeles area during his 14 years away from the Angels. He was on Los Angeles' bench when owner Arte Moreno bought the Angels in 2003, and the two have a cordial relationship.

Ausmus was fired one year after replacing Scioscia, who spent 19 seasons on the Angels' bench. Los Angeles has had four consecutive losing seasons for the first time since the 1970s, and the Angels have yet to win a playoff game with Mike Trout or Albert Pujols in their high-priced lineup.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler vowed to hold a comprehensive search for a new manager after firing Ausmus, insisting the Angels hadn't already decided on a successor despite the franchise's clear ties to Maddon.
