    • Yankees beat Angels 9-1, claim 1st AL East title since 2012
      September 19, 2019
      By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) The resilient New York Yankees powered their way to the club's first AL East title since 2012, routing the Los Angeles Angels 9-1 Thursday night behind three RBIs each from old mainstay Brett Gardner and newcomer DJ LeMahieu.

A day after wasting a chance to clinch first place, the homer-happy Yankees went ahead when LeMahieu hit a three-run drive in the second inning and breezed to their 100th win.

Gardner added a solo shot in the fourth and then hit a two-run double in the sixth. Cameron Maybin and Clint Frazier homered for good measure in the eighth, and Aroldis Chapman struck out Albert Pujols to end it.

Despite putting 30 players on the injured list this season, New York (100-54) wrapped up first place with eight games to spare and made Aaron Boone the first manager to win 100 games in each of his first two major league seasons.

The Yankees open the playoffs on Oct. 4, likely against Minnesota, which leads the AL Central, or the wild-card winner.

Masahiro Tanaka (11-8) allowed Kole Calhoun's homer leading off the fourth. The Angels had just four hits in seven innings off Tanaka, who struck out six and walked one.

But the Yankees may go to the postseason without their winningest pitcher, Domingo German. The 27-year-old right-hander, who is 18-4, was placed on administrative leave under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy earlier in the day.

New York's 19th AL East title was its first following a run of 13 in 17 years that started in Derek Jeter's rookie season.

Andrew Heaney (4-6) gave up six runs and five hits in five-plus innings.

      BRAVES 5, PHILLIES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. became the second-youngest player in baseball history to hit 40 homers in a season, Freddie Freeman also drove in two runs and Atlanta clinched at least a tie for first place in the NL East with a win over Philadelphia.

The Braves hold a 9 1/2-game lead over the Washington Nationals, who have played three fewer games and were off Thursday. Atlanta can officially celebrate as soon as Friday with either a victory over the San Francisco Giants or if Washington loses at Miami.

The Phillies trail Milwaukee by four games in the race for the NL's second wild-card spot.

Mel Ott, who was 20 when he hit 42 homers for the New York Giants in 1940, is the only player younger than Acuna to post a 40-homer season.

Aaron Nola (12-6) worked five-plus innings, giving up nine hits, two hits and all five Atlanta runs.

Mark Melancon worked perfect ninth for his 11th save with Atlanta and 12th overall this season.

      CARDINALS 5, CUBS 4, 10 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Matt Carpenter homered in the 10th inning against Craig Kimbrel in the All-Star closer's return, and St. Louis regrouped after blowing a late lead to beat Chicago.

Emerging ace Jack Flaherty shut down Chicago over eight innings, and despite a tying three-run rally in the ninth, the Cubs dropped a game behind Milwaukee for the second NL wild card and four games behind St. Louis for first place in the NL Central.

Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo provided a jolt in his unexpected return from a sprained right ankle, homering in the third inning to tie the game at 1. But Flaherty was spectacular otherwise, pitching three-hit ball while allowing just the one run and striking out eight.

Carpenter homered to deep center field off Kimbrel (0-3), who was activated from the injured list prior to the game after dealing with right elbow inflammation.

Giovanny Gallegos pitched a perfect 10th for his first save in two chances. Andrew Miller (5-5) recorded the final two outs in the ninth for the victory.

      BREWERS 5, PADRES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Lorenzo Cain homered before exiting with a sore ankle, Milwaukee pitchers combined to strike out 16 and the Brewers improved their playoff position by beating San Diego.

Milwaukee moved within one game of Washington for the top NL wild-card spot. The Brewers are in the second wild-card slot and three games behind Central-leading St. Louis.

Ryan Braun put Milwaukee ahead with an RBI double in the first inning off Joey Lucchesi (10-9). The Brewers added a run in the third when Keston Huira doubled and later scored on Lucchesi's wild pitch.

Eric Hosmer' homered for San Diego.

Freddy Peralta (7-3) struck out three of the four batters he faced for the win. Josh Hader picked up his 34th save in 40 tries, breaking a franchise record for left-handers previously held by Dan Plesac.

      INDIANS 7, TIGERS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Mike Clevinger pitched six shutdown innings, Franmil Reyes homered in his return to the lineup and Cleveland moved into a tie for the second AL wild card with a win over Detroit.

Francisco Lindor added three hits, and Cleveland matched idle Tampa Bay at 90-63. Both teams trail Oakland by two games for the top spot. The Indians trailed Minnesota by four games in the AL Central going into the game.

The Indians defeated the Tigers for the 17th straight time this season to match a franchise record set against Baltimore in 1954. Cleveland won 18 of 19 in the season series and outscored Detroit 116-38

Clevinger (12-3) allowed seven hits and struck out six.

Starter Daniel Norris (3-13) allowed one run in three innings for the Tigers, who have the worst record in baseball at 45-107.

The shutout was the 15th by Cleveland this season, and Detroit was blanked for the 14th time.

      RED SOX 5, GIANTS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Eduardo Rodriguez struck out 10 over six innings of two-hit ball, and Xander Bogaerts had a pair of RBI singles to lead Boston over San Francisco.

Brandon Workman picked up his 15th save. Rodriguez (18-6) walked two and allowed one unearned run.

Madison Bumgarner (9-9) lost in his first career start at Fenway Park, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks in five innings while striking out seven. He allowed the first four Boston batters to reach safely and fell behind 2-1 after one inning.

      MARINERS 6, PIRATES 5, 11 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Shed Long had three hits, two RBIs and scored the go-ahead run in the 11th on an unusual inning-ending double play as Seattle beat Pittsburgh.

The Mariners swept the three-game series between last-place teams and sent the Pirates to their sixth straight loss.

Long reached base on first baseman Jose Osuna's error to start the 11th and Omar Narvaez singled with one out to put runners on the corners. Austin Nola then hit a chopper to second baseman Kevin Kramer - rather than flip the ball to second, he ran at Narvaez, who alertly stopped and began to retreat.

Kramer then threw to first, and Narvaez was eventually tagged in a 4-3-6-2 rundown as Long scored. Kramer likely would've had no chance to throw home at the start to get Long.

Pittsburgh's Jake Elmore had three hits and two RBIs.

Brandon Brennan (3-6) pitched one scoreless inning and rookie Erik Swanson worked around a walk in the 11th for his first career save. Clay Holmes (1-2) took the loss.

      BLUE JAYS 8, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Cavan Biggio homered and had three RBIs to offset a spectacular, homer-robbing catch by Austin Hays, and Toronto used a six-run seventh inning to beat Baltimore for a three-game sweep.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also went deep for the Blue Jays, who earned their first sweep at Camden Yards since July 2010.

After Biggio and Gurriel homered off Gabriel Ynoa (1-9) within a span of three pitches in the fourth inning, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sent a drive to center. Hays ran to the warning track, leaped to reach over the 7-foot wall and snagged the ball in the middle of his glove. Upon returning to the ground, Hays pounded his chest three times in succession and yelled with delight.

Anthony Kay (1-0) earned his first major league victory.

Trey Mancini had four hits for the Orioles, who have lost four straight and 15 of 19.

        • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

          — Tulane 38, Houston 31- Green Wave scored winning TD with 0:03 left; wild ending.

          — Why does the Green Wave wear light blue uniforms?

          — Braves 5, Phillies 4- Austin Riley hit his 18th homer, but his first since August 2nd.

          — Twins 8, Royals 5- Nelson Cruz homered twice for Minnesota.

          — Indians 7, Tigers 0— Cleveland/Tampa Bay are tied for 2nd Wild Card in AL.

          — Somehow, Don Mattingly is getting a contract extension from the Marlins.

          **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…..

          13) If Cam Newton can’t go for the Panthers in Arizona Sunday, backup Kyle Allen would get the start, creating an interesting sidebar to the game.

In 2015, Allen beat out Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray in a competition for the starting QB job at Texas A&M; both guys transferred after the season, first Allen to Houston, then Murray to Oklahoma.

Allen is from Arizona, so this would be a special day for him, should he start- he started one game last year, a 33-14 win in New Orleans in Week 17, a game Drew Brees sat out.

          12) Jaguars 20, Titans 7:
          — Tennessee fumbled a punt early on; Jaguars’ first TD drive was seven yards.
          — Titans had 223 yards, 16 first downs in 2nd half, but scored only seven points.
          — Mariota has been sacked 17 times thru the first three games; of the 2019 season; that is the most a single QB has been sacked through Week 3 since 2002.

          — Jacksonville led 14-0 after 8:24 of play, kind of sat on lead rest of way.
          — Jaguars sacked Mariota nine times.
          — Fournette had 66 yards on 15 carries, but had 69 yards on one carry.

          11) Two years ago, Gardner Minshew split QB duties for a 3-8 East Carolina team with a guy named Thomas Sirk, who had transferred to ECU from Duke. The year before, Minshew played behind Philip Nelson at ECU; haven’t heard much from Sirk or Nelson since, while Minshew is quickly making a name for himself with Jacksonville.

          10) You think Mike Leach’s recruiting coordinator at Washington State is smiling this week? Luke Falk makes his first NFL appearance for the Jets Monday night, then three nights later, Minshew plays on national TV, lending credence to Leach as a quarterback guru.

          9) Congrats to SF Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy on winning his 2,000th game as a big league skipper Wednesday night in Boston. Cooperstown awaits.

          8) A gambler played a 2-team money-line parlay at a Caesars Palace sportsbook this week, risking $89,000 to win $4,050 on the Patriots and Cowboys.

I mean, the guy put up $89,000 to win $4,050; he mustn’t think much of Luke Falk.

He will be interested to learn that Miami is switching to Josh Rosen at QB this week, and that the Dolphins claimed DE Taco Charlton off waivers from Dallas, who they play Sunday.

          7) Bronx Bomber pitcher Domingo German was placed on administrative leave under the joint MLB-MLBPA domestic violence policy. German is 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA and 153 strikeouts this season, so if he is lost for the playoffs, it is a big loss.

          6) Red Sox are having a disappointing year, but Eduardo Rodriguez is having his best season; he has a 1.00 ERA in his last seven starts, and since May 1 has a 3.02 ERA in 26 starts.

          5) UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero will retire next summer; the UC Regents unanimously approved a six-month extension of his contract Thursday.

This means the AD jobs at both UCLA and USC are open; pretty big jobs. The football coaches at both schools are on shaky ground. UCLA just hired a new basketball coach (Mick Cronin) and USC has a very good hoop coach (Andy Enfield).

Fresno State AD Terry Tumey, a former UCLA nose guard who played on the Bruins’ last team to win the Rose Bowl in 1986, is widely considered the favorite to succeed Guerrero.

Wait a minute; UCLA hasn’t won the Rose Bowl since 1986? Wow.

          4) Quote of the Day, part 2:
“I also believe Eli Manning will get into the Hall of Fame. I also don’t believe he’s a very good quarterback.”
          ESPN’s Ryan Clark

This has become a heated debate on Twitter; lot of mixed opinions, lot of strong opinions, but Clark played 13 years in the NFL, so his words carry weight.

          3) Again, these are facts that helped ignite the Eli Manning/Hall of Fame debate:
Jim Plunkett: 72-72 regular season, 8-2 playoffs, two Super Bowls.
Eli Manning: 116-116 regular season, 8-4 playoffs, two Super Bowls.

My opinion is that Eli will eventually be a Hall of Famer, hopefully not on the first ballot.

          2) Not to stir things up, but these are Philip Rivers’ career stats:

Philip Rivers: 119-91 regular season, 5-6 playoffs, no Super Bowls, 55,282 passing yards and hasn’t missed a game since 2005.

Manning’s/Rivers’ careers are forever linked because Archie Manning didn’t want his youngest son playing for the Chargers, who drafted Eli, then traded him to New Jersey for Rivers and a couple other draft picks, who became LB Shawne Merriman and K Nate Kaeding.

          1) NFL games need fewer penalties; having ex-referees as TV stars in the booth tells you all you need to know— flags are too big a part of the game. College football games average more plays than NFL games, and far fewer penalties are called. Let the guys play!!!!

                          • STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                            STREAKING

                            J.A. Happ, New York Yankees (12-8, 5.07 ERA, $429):
The Yankees left-hander has been excellent in the month of September, allowing a total of just two runs over his last three starts. The Yankees are 4-0 in his previous four outings while Happ has given up just 12 hits through 22 innings over that span.

Tonight, Happ and the Bronx Bombers host the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees are 50-16 in their last 66 home games while the Jays are 4-11 in their previous 16 away contests. New York is a -180 favorite and has good value on the runline at +100.

                            SLUMPING

Mike Fiers, Oakland Athletics (14-4, 4.09 ERA, $1166):
Fiers has been on the Streaking side of this column a few times but he's been ice-cold lately. In September he's cooled down faster than the weather with an ERA of 18.78 and a WHIP of 2.87 in three starts.

His last outing was on Saturday against the Rangers and he was given the hook midway through the second inning after he gave up three runs and was bothered by a "nerve irritation" in his throwing arm.

Fiers will try to get back on track in a rematch against the Rangers tonight. His opponent will once again be Mike Minor who was rocked for three homers and seven runs through five innings on Saturday.

If you think history will repeat itself, taking the O8.5 on the full game total could be very appealing.

                            3 STRIKES

                            LIFTING THE KERSH

Clayton Kershaw is going through a rough patch going 2-3 over his last five starts with a 5.08 ERA. That said, the former NL MVP is still 14-5 with a 3.05 ERA on the season and gets to pitch at home against the Colorado Rockies today.

The Rockies bat just .231 on the road and will have Peter Lambert on the mound. Lambert is 3-6 with a 6.98 ERA and has a brutal 11.12 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers. The Dodgers are -355 faves and the runline pays out at -160.

                            POOR PITCHING

A couple of ineffective starters take to the mound for tonight's game between the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers. The White Sox will start Dylan Cease who is 3-7 with a 6.18 ERA, while Detroit gives the ball to Jordan Zimmerman who is 1-11 with a 6.32 ERA.

Even though both teams are also terrible at the plate we think that at least one of these pitchers will get crushed today. The Over 9.5 is worth a look.

                            BATTLE IN THE AL EAST

The Red Sox might be the biggest disappointment this year, with the defending World Series Champions essentially eliminated from the playoffs with ten games remaining. The Rays however, are in the thick of the wild card race and will have Charlie Morton on the mound today against the BoSox. Morton is 15-6 with a 3.16 ERA, and in four starts against Boston this season he's held Red Sox batters to a BA of .216.

Rick Porcello will take to the hill for the Red Sox and he's gone 13-12 with a 5.77 ERA. In three starts against Tampa Bay in 2019 he's gone 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA and a BAA of .315.

The Rays are 9-3 in the last 12 meetings between these sides and are -180 favorites at home tonight.

                            • Braves beat Giants 6-0, clinch 2nd straight NL East title
                              September 20, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Braves clinched their second straight NL East title as Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his 41st homer in a 6-0 win over San Francisco on Friday night that eliminated the Giants from postseason contention in Bruce Bochy's last year as San Francisco manager.

Acuna scored three runs to back Mike Foltynewicz (8-5), who allowed three hits in eight innings. Atlanta's 19th division title tied the New York Yankees for the most since Major League Baseball split into divisions for the 1969 season.

Atlanta's win ensured it will finish ahead of second-place Washington and will start the NL Division Series at home on Oct. 3, most likely against the NL Central champion.

Braves players ran onto the infield to celebrate as soon as Acuna caught Alex Dickerson's game-ending flyout.

Atlanta (95-60) moved into sole possession of first place for good on June 12. Led by Acuna, Freddie Freeman, Josh Donaldson and a offense that produced a franchise-best 241 homers, its lead swelled from 5+ to 10 games in six days ending with a 9-4 home win over Washington on Sept. 7.

The Braves, who have not won a postseason series since 2001, secured a playoffs berth last week and needed a few extra days to clinch the division. They lost three in a row for the first time since July 16-18 but have won two straight.

                              CARDINALS 2, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Yadier Molina had three of St. Louis' four hits, including a two-run single, and the Cardinals held off the fading Chicago.

Carlos Martinez got the final two outs. The Cardinals' NL Central lead is three games over Milwaukee and five over Chicago. The Cubs are two games behind the Brewers for the second NL wild card.

Chicago has totaled nine runs while losing its past four games. The Cardinals have won the first two games of this key four-game set, and they'll play the Cubs five more times over their final eight games.

The Cubs scored their run following a St. Louis error in the second inning, and the Cardinals rallied in the sixth.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Carrasco got his first save in five years, and Cleveland beat Philadelphia to maintain position for the second AL wild card and damage the Phillies' playoff chances.

Before the game, the Marlins announced manager Don Mattingly had agreed to a two-year contract extension. Mattingly was in the final year of a four-year contract.

Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run double for the Twins, and Miguel Sano had a run-scoring triple.

Kansas City has dropped seven of eight and is one defeat away from its second consecutive 100-loss season and No. 6 in franchise history. The Royals could give the majors four 100-loss teams in a season for only the second time.

Trevor May struck out the side in his second save of the season.

The Pirates fell to 65-89 with their seventh straight loss.

Anderson (7-4) allowed three hits, struck out four and walked one while matching his longest outing of the season.

NEW YORK (AP) - Star second baseman Gleyber Torres prompted an audible gasp from the Yankee Stadium crowd when his right leg buckled while fielding a grounder and made an early exit in New York's loss to Toronto.

Torres said his lower legs felt weakness.

Aaron Judge and Tyler Wade homered for the Yankees a day after they clinched the division.

Dylan Cease (4-7) allowed a run and five hits in six innings - the first quality start for the White Sox since Sept. 6. Cease struck out eight with two walks.

Zimmerman allowed nine runs and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Jimenez finished a double shy of the cycle, and Yolmer Sanchez had four hits for Chicago.

Chad Pinder hit a three-run homer and Mark Canha also connected as the A's (93-61) kept their margin over Cleveland and Tampa Bay (91-63).

Fiers (15-4) allowed two hits and faced the minimum, helped by a double play and a pickoff. Chris Bassitt struck out two in a perfect ninth to finish Oakland's 11th shutout in 2 hours, 38 minutes.

Arizona remained five games behind Milwaukee for the second NL wild card and also needs to overtake the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets. The Diamondbacks have won four of their last six games after losing six straight.

San Diego has lost eight of nine.
