      • Acuña, Braves pound Nationals, clinch playoff spot
        September 14, 2019
        By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Ronald Acuna Jr. ignited a four-run rally with the go-ahead, two-run double, and the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves clinched a playoff berth with a 10-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.

Acuna's double down the left-field line off reliever Fernando Rodney added fuel to a dramatic seventh inning for the Braves (93-57), who reduced their magic number to four to clinch their 19th division title.

Earlier in the seventh, Charlie Culberson was struck directly on the right cheekbone by a 91-mph fastball on Rodney's first pitch of the game.

Culberson remained on his back for several minutes as trainers pressed a towel to his face. He was eventually helped to his feet and onto the back of a cart.

The Braves have won the last 11 games started by Mike Foltynewicz (7-5), who pitched six solid innings.

Wander Suero (5-8) was charged with the loss as the Washington bullpen gave up nine runs over the final four innings. The Nationals saw their lead in the NL wild card race shrink to 1+ games over the Chicago Cubs.

        YANKEES 13, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - James Paxton pitched five innings to win his ninth straight start, Brett Gardner homered twice and drove in five runs and New York hit five homers against Toronto.

Gleyber Torres and Luke Voit also homered for the Yankees, going back-to-back off right-hander Brock Stewart in the fifth, as the AL East leaders won for the 14th time in 19 games.

DJ LeMahieu had four hits for New York, his AL-leading 58th multi-hit game of the season.

Paxton (14-6) allowed one run on three hits, becoming the first Yankees pitcher since Mike Mussina to win nine consecutive starts.

Jacob Waguespack (4-5) allowed three runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

        METS 3, DODGERS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Rajai Davis hit a three-run double off Julio Urias with two outs in the eighth inning following a brilliant pitchers' duel between the Mets' Jacob deGrom and Hyun-Jin Ryu, and New York beat Los Angeles to maintain its slim wild-card hopes

DeGrom and Ryu both pitched shutout ball for seven innings and neither walked a batter in a game in which each team got just three hits.

New York remained three games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild card with 14 games left and also trails Milwaukee.

Davis broke a 0-0 tie after two hit batters and a walk by the Dodgers' bullpen. Joe Kelly (5-4) took the loss.

Seth Lugo (6-3) struck out the side in the eighth, and Justin Wilson pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

        CUBS 14, PIRATES 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant and rookie Nico Hoerner each homered among three hits, and Chicago went deep four times to set a club record with 237 home runs while pounding Pittsburgh.

Bryant hit a two-run shot in the fourth and had four RBIs. Hoerner's second homer in two days, a three-run drive in the sixth, broke the Cubs' old mark of 235, established in 2004.

Ben Zobrist and Victor Caratini added solo shots as the Cubs used a second straight big day at the plate to strengthen their bid for a fifth straight postseason berth.

Kyle Hendricks (11-9) allowed a run on seven hits in six innings while walking one for his third straight solid outing.

James Marvel (0-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits in four innings in his second major league start.

        TWINS 9, INDIANS 5, GAME 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Miguel Sano's grand slam capped a five-run eighth inning and Minnesota grabbed firm control of the AL Central, sweeping a day-night doubleheader from Cleveland.

The sweep pushed the Twins 5+ games ahead of the Indians going into the final game of the showdown series Sunday.

Four pitchers worked for Minnesota, with rookie right-hander Brusdar Graterol (1-0) going two scoreless innings for his first major league win.

Jorge Polanco's double off Oliver Perez (2-3) tied the game. Cruz and Eddie Rosario walked to load the bases, bringing Nick Goody in to face Sano.

        TWINS 2, INDIANS 0, GAME 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Five Minnesota pitchers combined to stop Cleveland's offense and the Twins beat the Indians 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Zack Littell (5-0) relieved starter Devin Smeltzer in the fourth and struck out two in two innings.

Taylor Rogers got the final five outs for his 26th save, but had to work out of trouble in the eighth and ninth.

Jorge Polanco hit a two-run homer in the second off Mike Clevinger (11-3), who had won 10 consecutive decisions. Clevinger struck out 10 in eight innings, but lost for the first time since June 28.

        BREWERS 5, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Mike Moustakas and Yasmani Grandal homered to help Milwaukee beat St. Louis.

Milwaukee moved four games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central. The Brewers remained one game behind the Chicago Cubs for the second wild card spot. The Cubs, who beat Pittsburgh, cut the Cardinals' division lead to three games.

Only one of the two runs Brewers starter Jordan Lyles (11-8) allowed was earned. He gave up six hits and struck out four over six innings.

Jay Jackson, Drew Pomeranz, Junior Guerra combined for a scoreless seventh and eighth. Josh Hader earned his 32nd save in 38 opportunities.

Jack Flaherty (10-8) needed 102 pitches to get through six innings. He gave up three runs on five hits and a pair of walks as St. Louis had its two-game winning streak snapped.

        RED SOX 2, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pinch-hitter Andrew Benintendi's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning lifted Boston over Philadelphia.

The Phillies were mathematically eliminated from the NL East race when the Braves beat Washington earlier in the day to increase their lead in the division to 10+ games over the Nationals. Philadelphia fell 3+ games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second wild card spot and also trails the Brewers and Mets.

Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez had a season-high 12 strikeouts for the defending World Series champions.

Mitch Moreland led off the ninth with a single off Hector Neris (3-6) to set up the winning run.

Matt Barnes (5-4) tossed a scoreless eighth and Brandon Workman finished for his 16th save in 22 tries.

        DIAMONDBACKS 1, REDS 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Merrill Kelly pitched seven scoreless innings, Nick Ahmed's triple led to the game's only run and Arizona snapped a six-game losing streak by beating Cincinnati.

It was a much-needed win for the Diamondbacks, who are trying to stay in a crowded NL wild-card race. They're still 4+ games behind the Chicago Cubs for the final playoff spot with 13 games remaining.

It was another good start for Kelly (11-14), whose spot in the rotation was in jeopardy just a few weeks ago after a rough string of outings in July and August. Archie Bradley earned his 14th save.

Cincinnati's Anthony DeSclafani (9-9) was nearly as good, giving up just one hit over seven innings.

        TIGERS 8, ORIOLES 4, 12 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) - Victor Reyes hit a tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning and John Hicks had the game-winning grand slam in the 12th to lift Detroit past Baltimore.

The Orioles lost their 100th game for the second straight season after finishing 47-115 a year ago.

Hicks' blast to the bullpen in left field came off Ryan Eades (0-1) on a 2-2 count, and was his 12th of the season.

John Schreiber (2-0) earned the win, finishing the 12th.

        ASTROS 6, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Zack Greinke finally beat his old club and Yordan Alvarez belted a pinch-hit three-run homer as Houston beat Kansas City.

Alex Bregman hit his 36th homer and rookie Kyle Tucker was 4-for-4 for the AL West-leading Astros.

Greinke (16-5) went six innings and handed a 2-1 lead to the bullpen. Hector Rondon, Joe Smith, Bryan Abreu and Will Harris combined for three scoreless innings. Greinke gave up one run, six hits and no walks. He struck out seven.

This was the fifth start by Greinke against the Royals since they traded him after the 2010 season. He was 0-2 in the first four, all for different teams.

Kansas City starter Mike Montgomery (3-9) took the loss.

        RAYS 3, ANGELS 1

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

            13) Virginia 31, Florida State 24— Cavaliers had three TD drives of 72+ yards in the 4th quarter, as they handed FSU a loss that made the Seminoles 13-15 SU in their last 28 games.

            12) Iowa 18, Iowa State 17— Game was delayed twice by lightning for total of almost three hours; Hawkeyes won 5th straight game in this rivalry, despite being outgained by 105 yards. Cyclones lost two fumbles, were 3-9 on 3rd down; Iowa was 10-19.

            11) Temple 20, Maryland 17— Weird game; Terrapins were 5-21 on 3rd down, 1-6 on 4th down, failing to score on three drives where they had 1st-and goal. Maryland scored two safeties, was +2 in turnovers but still lost- they completed only 16-39 passes.

            10) BYU 30, USC 27 OT— Cougars win in OT for second week in a row; they won at Tennessee LW. Trojans were minus-3 in turnovers; total yardage was 452-430, fun game to watch.

            9) Air Force 30, Colorado 23 OT— Buffaloes started LY 5-0, then lost their last seven games and fired coach MacIntyre, who I think is a good coach (DC at Ole Miss now).

Colorado beat Nebraska LW, in the renewal of an old rivalry, then they get beat in OT here by an Air Force team that ran ball for 289 yards. Buffs have a senior QB; this is their year to make some noise, but this is a bad loss.

            8) Wake Forest 24, North Carolina 18— Demon Deacons are 3-0, and appear headed to their 4th straight bowl, which would be the first time Wake Forest has done that. Thats the good news.

Bad news for Wake Forest will be when a big $$$ school comes calling for coach Dave Clawson, who appears headed for greener pa$ture$ fairly soon. Very good coach.

            7) Upsets:
            — Kansas (+19) 48, Boston College 24
            — Arizona State (+15.5) 10, Michigan State 7
            — Kansas State (+7.5) 31, Mississippi State 24
            — West Virginia (+7) 44, NC State 27
            — Temple (+7) 20, Maryland 17
            — Eastern Michigan (+7) 34, Illinois 31
            — Liberty (+6) 35, Buffalo 17

            6) I-A team losing to a I-AA team:
            — Citadel 27, Georgia Tech 24— Citadel runs the option, making things worse for Tech.

            Close call, red flag:
            — Virginia Tech 24, Furman 17
            — Nevada 19, Weber State 13
            — Wyoming 21, Idaho 16

            5) Eastern Michigan 34, Illinois 31— Was impressed by EMU senior QB Mike Glass III, who was 23-36/316 passing in the Eagles’ upset win.

            4) Arizona State 10, Michigan State 7— Spartans didn’t score until there was 8:37 left to play; Sun Devils went ahead 10-7 with 0:50 left, then Michigan State tied it on a FG with 0:06 left, but they had 12 men on the field- when they tried the kick again, they missed badly.

Big win for Herm Edwards’ Sun Devils, who were 15.5-point underdogs; ASU is 6-2 ATS as an underdog under Edwards.

            3) Arizona 28, Texas Tech 14— Wildcats ran ball for 314 yards, converted 15-21 third down plays. Arizona QB Tate threw for 185 yards, ran for 129 more.

            2) Southern Miss 47, Troy State 42— Both teams threw for 500+ yards; there were six TD’s scored in 4th quarter, including back/back kick returns for TD’s— shortest play of the six TD’s was 34 yards. 12 TD’s, no turnovers, wild game.

            1) A gambler put $1,000 on Auburn to beat Kent State (with no pointspread) at a Caesars sportsbook Saturday night. Auburn won 55-16; the bettor wins $5, so he basically got a free drink for his trouble.

                          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                          STREAKING

Ryan Yarbrough, Tampa Bay Rays (11-3, 3.51 ERA, $186):
When we did this column on Friday there was no shortage of streaking pitchers but today there is hardly anybody to choose (besides three of the throwers we already discussed in our Double Play Picks). Yarbrough probably fits the bill closer than anybody else despite giving up 10 runs over his last 19 innings pitched.

Over the long term, the Tampa Bay southpaw is indeed streaking with the Rays 12-2 over his last 14 outings and Yarbrough posting a 2.34 ERA with a 0.78 WHIP over that span. His control has been exceptional with just four walked batters through 65 innings over his last 11 starts.

Today, Yarbrough and the Rays are taking on the Angels and their own young lefty in Patrick Sandoval. The Halos are 0-5 in Sandoval's last five starts and 0-6 in their last six home games. With Tampa Bay 13-3 over their previous 16 contests they hold good value on the moneyline at -160.

                          SLUMPING

Trevor Bauer, Cincinnati Reds (10-12, 4.55 ERA, $-314):
Ever since his last game with Cleveland before the trade to Cincinnati, Bauer has looked pretty awful. The Reds are 2-6 in Bauer's eight starts with the franchise. Over his last nine starts overall Bauer is just 1-5 with a 8.08 ERA and a WHIP of 1.71.

Bauer will try to turn things around this afternoon against the Diamondbacks. Arizona is 1-6 in their last seven games and are batting just .223 over their previous 25 contests.

The Under is 5-1-1 in the Reds last seven games, 6-1-1 in the D-Backs previous eight and 6-0-1 in Arizona starter Zac Gallen's last seven outings. Cincy may actually be a bit undervalued at +135 and the Under 8.5 is worth a look as well.

CHICAGO (AP) Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo was pulled from a game Sunday with a sprained right ankle, putting a damper on the Chicago Cubs' 16-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates that completed a three-game sweep.

Rizzo was injured fielding a bunt at first base, had to be helped off the field and could not put pressure on the leg. X-rays taken at Wrigley Field showed no fractures. He'll get an MRI on Monday.

Chicago's postseason pursuit has already been hindered by an injury to shortstop Javier Baez, who is out for the rest of the regular season with a hairline fracture of his left thumb.

The Cubs maintained their one-game lead over Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.

Kris Bryant homered twice, and Ian Happ, Kyle Schwarber and Jonathan Lucroy also connected for the Cubs, who outscored the Pirates 47-15 in the series.

Brad Wieck (1-1) struck out both batters he faced. Trevor Williams (7-7) allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings.

NEW YORK (AP) - Jedd Gyorko came off the bench late and played a big role in rallying Los Angeles to a victory that damaged New York's dwindling wild-card chances.

Gyorko scored the tying run in the eighth inning on Chris Taylor's double and hit an RBI single off Seth Lugo (6-4) with two outs in the ninth to put the NL West champions in front.

Brandon Nimmo laced a two-run triple for the Mets, who managed only three hits and wasted an excellent start from Zack Wheeler. They dropped four games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild card to with 13 to go. Milwaukee is three games ahead of New York.

Scuffling closer Kenley Jansen (5-3) worked a perfect eighth, and Kenta Maeda got two outs for his fifth career save and second this season.
