    STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

    STREAKING

Ryan Yarbrough, Tampa Bay Rays (11-3, 3.36 ERA, $-14):
Yarbrough has also contributed to the Rays excellent bullpen, throwing in 14 games as a reliever, but when given starts he's actually eaten up a decent amount of innings. In nine starts this season he's logged at least six innings in eight of them.

His last four appeances have all been as a starter and he's been very impressive with a 1.42 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 28 strikeouts over 25 1-3 innings.

This afternoon Yarbrough and the Rays are -300 favorites at home against the lowly Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles are 5-16 in their last 21 games in Tampa Bay and will have Asher Wojciechowski and his 5.12 ERA on the mound.

    SLUMPING

Ross Detwiler, Chicago White Sox (2-4, 6.45 ERA, $250):
Detwiler is another pitcher who is sometimes used as a starter and sometimes as a reliever. But while Yarbrough is effective in both roles, Detwiler is not good at either; he has a 5.31 ERA as a starter and a 9.95 ERA in relief. In his last five outings (which includes three starts) he has a 8.50 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP.

Detwiler and the White Sox are on the road in Cleveland tonight as +180 underdogs. The White Sox have lost six games in a row and will be going up against an Indians team that is 16-7 over their previous 23 home contests. The O/U is installed at 10.

    • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Interesting college football spreads for this week:

      — Nebraska (-4.5) @ Colorado

      — Texas A&M @ Clemson (-17.5)

      — San Diego State @ UCLA (-7)

      — BYU @ Tennessee (-3.5)

      — LSU (-5) @ Texas

      — Miami (-6) @ North Carolina

      **********

Armadillo:Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

      13) Bad weekend to be a USC quarterback:

We said yesterday how USC Trojans QB JT Daniels tore his ACL and is done for the year. He will be replaced by true freshman Kedon Slovis.

South Carolina Gamecocks QB Jake Bentley broke his foot and is out for six weeks; his replacement will be true freshman Ryan Hilinski.

      12) Slovis, Hilinski starting means that seven true freshmen are now starting QB’s out of 130 I-A football teams.

      11) Indianapolis Colts gave QB Jacoby Brissett $30M for two years, and then signed Brian Hoyer as his backup, giving him $12M for three years.

      10) In his last three years at UCLA, Dolphins’ QB Josh Rosen had three different offensive coordinators; last year, he had two OC’s in his one year with the Cardinals, and obviously has a new OC in Miami this year. Plus the Dolphins just traded their LT, which endangers the health of whomever plays QB for Miami this year.

Not a great start to Rosen’s career.

      9) Early nominee for Bad Beat of the Year was Northwestern (+6.5) at Stanford. Game was 10-7 Stanford in the last minute when the Cardinal sacked Northwestern’s QB, he fumbled and they scored a defensive TD to cover the spread with 0:20 left to play.

      8) Jets’ radio guy Bob Wischusen was working a college game on ESPN Saturday and was saying how he thinks Jim Brown and Lawrence Taylor were the two best football players ever.

Jim Brown played before my time, so I can’t comment on him; LT was a great linebacker whose pass rushing skills helped change the game, but if he did the same exact thing playing for the Chiefs or Bengals, instead of a NYC-area team, he’s not in the best player ever conversation.

      7) In five starts from April 15-May 9, Cubs’ P Yu Darvish walked 22 batters in 22.2 IP.

In 14 starts since June 15, Darvish has walked 8 hitters, while striking out 102 in 80 IP.

      6) Jacksonville Jaguars won’t practice Wednesday because of Hurricane Dorian.

      5) Alabama is a 54-point favorite over New Mexico State Saturday; the total is 65; Crimson Tide opens SEC play next week when they play South Carolina, so the starter figure to get a good chunk of this game off. Then again, New Mexico State just lost 58-7 at Washington State, so probably a good game to stay away from.

      4) Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the 20th QB to start for the Dolphins since Dan Marino retired.

      3) Final AAA Home Run Totals:
      2018 – 3,652
      2019 – 5,749 (57.4% increase)

AAA games switched to major league baseballs this year.

      2) Sports betting became legal in Indiana Sunday; governor of Indiana made a $10 wager on the Colts to open things up. Probably would’ve bet more if Andrew Luck hadn’t retired.

Wouldn’t it be fun if just once, a politician stepped out and dropped $1,000 on the home team with his ceremonial first bet? Have some onions, Governor!!!

      1) Labor Day night and only two baseball games are on, with 8:00 the latest start time. Whats up with that?

                  STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                  STREAKING

Jack Flaherty, St. Louis Cardinals (8-7, 3.31 ERA, $667):
Starting pitching is a big reason the Cardinals now own a three-game lead in the NL Central and you don’t have to look any further than Flaherty. The right-hander is on some kind of run. He has allowed two or fewer runs in his last 10 starts and that equates to 1.01 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP over that span.

It’s no surprise the Cards are massive -290 home faves tonight against the Giants. Maybe consider the home team on the runline at -150.

                  SLUMPING

Dylan Cease, Chicago White Sox (3-7, 6.92 ERA, $398):
The White Sox showed some promise this season and the future is bright for the South Siders. So, Cease is a guy looking to show his worth for next year and beyond and he’ll need to turn things around in the final month to do so.

The rookie right-hander has had a bit of a rude welcoming to the Big Leagues and his last three starts have been particularly rough. Cease owns a 11.08 ERA and 1.85 WHIP over that stretch. He and the Pale Hose are big +265 road dogs tonight in Cleveland going up against Mike Clevinger.

                  3 STRIKES

                  HOW HIGH CAN YOU GO

The Boston Red Sox host the Minnesota Twins in what should be a series with lots of long balls. The Twins recently set the major league record for homeruns in a season and lead the majors in both runs per game and OPS. On the road their batting numbers get even better, plating 6.35 runs per contest with an OPS of .859.

The Red Sox aren't far behind them, sitting third in the bigs in runs per game (5.76) and fourth in OPS (.826). Boston will start Rick Porcello tonight but the former Cy Young Award winner has struggled in 2019 with a 5.42 ERA and a BAA of .277 in 27 starts.

Minnesota will give the ball to Randy Dobnak. Who?? Yeah, I don't really know either. A quick google search tells me that Dobnak is a rookie that has pitched three games in relief this year and will be making his first start. It's uncertain how long he will stay in the game before making way for a Twins bullpen that allows opponents to hit .260, the seventh-worst number in the majors.

The line still hasn't been released for this game but the O/U will likely be very high. Still I will probably be leaning towards the Over.

                  USE THE PROPER FONT

It seems like the Blue Jays have found the perfect role for reliever Wilmer Font as an “Opener”. Before finding a home in Toronto, Font pitched to a 5.20 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP, bouncing between long relief roles and occasional starts.

Now, in his new role with the Jays, Font has allowed earned runs just twice in his nine “opener” starts, pitching to a 1.56 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP and has a 27-6 strikeout to walk ratio. With Toronto ranking in the bottom third of the MLB in first inning road runs per game, look at taking the first inning to be a scoreless one against the Braves today.

                  D-UNITS!

Want to hear a crazy stat? Tigers’ starter Daniel Norris is up a whopping $621 (based on $100 wagers) over his last three starts. And he lost one of them! Having one game where you go up 4.3 units never hurts, but we digress. The Tigers seem to have a new strategy when using Norris. Give them three solid innings and that’s it, no matter how well or poorly it is going. So, Norris has pitched three innings in his last three starts, and he has given up just on run on five hits and has a 3-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Overall, Norris has pitched much better since the middle of July, owing a 3.27 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in his last eight starts. Norris and the Tigers have more value tonight in K.C. as +125 dogs against the Royals.

                      • Bryce Harper drives in 100th run, Phillies beat Reds 6-2
                        September 3, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

CINCINNATI (AP) Bryce Harper drove in his 100th run with a single, J.T. Realmuto had a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly, and the Philadelphia Phillies won their third in a row Tuesday night, 6-2 over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Phillies began the day 2+ games behind the Cubs for the final NL wild card.

Harper's fifth-inning single made him the first Phillie since Ryan Howard in 2011 to have 30 homers and 100 RBIs in the same season. Harper hit his 30th homer in the series opener, a 7-1 Phillies win on Monday. The last Phillies outfielder to have 30 homers and 100 RBIs in a season was Pat Burrell in 2005.

Harper's single also gave him an 11-game hitting streak.

Left-hander Amir Garrett (4-2) walked a pair of batters and gave up Cesar Hernandez's RBI single that put the Phillies ahead to stay. Scott Kingery homered in the ninth.

Nick Vincent (1-2) pitched an inning in relief of Vince Velasquez, who lasted three innings.

The fading Reds have lost nine of their last 13.

                        YANKEES 10, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - James Paxton pitched one-hit ball for seven shutout innings, striking out 12 and winning his seventh straight start as New York beat Texas.

Gary Sanchez hit two home runs, Edwin Encarnacion added a two-run drive in his return from the injured list, and Didi Gregorius and Brett Gardner also connected.

Paxton (12-6) pitched quickly and began with 4 2/3 hitless innings. He gave up one hit and walked one.

Edinson Volquez (0-1) opened the game for Texas and allowed two runs on one hit.

Scott Heineman hit his first career homer in the ninth off Jonathan Loaisiga for Texas.

                        BRAVES 7, BLUE JAYS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Josh Donaldson doubled and drove in three runs, Mike Foltynewicz pitched five scoreless innings, and streaking Atlanta won its sixth straight game.

Ozzie Albies added an early RBI for the Braves, who are 14-2 since Aug. 16 and 32 games over .500 for the first time since the 2003 team finished 101-61.

Tyler Flowers' three-run double in the eighth finished off the Blue Jays, who have lost 12 of 15 to fall a season-worst 30 games under .500.

Foltynewicz (5-5) allowed a baserunner in each of his innings, but none in scoring position. He walked three and struck out two.

Rowdy Tellez homered and Derek Fisher added an RBI double for Toronto. Wilmer Font (3-4) took the loss.

                        WHITE SOX 6, INDIANS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Carrasco received a standing ovation in his first appearance at Progressive Field since being diagnosed with leukemia, but gave up home runs to James McCann and Eloy Jimenez in the eighth inning that lifted Chicago over Cleveland.

Carrasco entered the game with a 5-2 lead, but gave up a three-run homer to McCann, which was followed by Jimenez's second homer of the game.

Cleveland missed a chance to move into a virtual tie with Tampa Bay for the AL wild-card lead. The White Sox ended a season-high seven-game losing streak.

Carrasco (4-7) entered the game after Roberto Perez's three-homer in the seventh gave Cleveland a 5-2 lead.

Evan Marshall (4-2) got the win despite allowing Perez's home run. Alex Colome earned his 26th save.

Francisco Lindor also homered for Cleveland.

                        MARLINS 5, PIRATES 4, 10 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Miguel Rojas hit a tying home run with two outs in the ninth and Garrett Cooper connected in the 10th as Miami rallied past Pittsburgh, ending their franchise-record 15-game road losing streak.

The Marlins were down to their final out when Rojas homered to center field off Felipe Vazquez, who had just his third blown save in 27 opportunities.

Cooper's home run, a 444-foot shot to left-center, came with one out off Parker Markel (0-1).

Adam Conley (2-7) got the last out of the ninth when Pablo Reyes was thrown out at home while trying to score from second base on Adam Frazier's infield single.

Jose Urena pitched a perfect 10th for his first save of the season and second of his career. He was Miami's opening day starter this year.

                        BREWERS 4, ASTROS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Zack Greinke lost his first game since joining Houston, giving up a three-run homer to Eric Thames as Milwaukee earned a split of the interleague series.

Greinke (4-1) stumbled for the first time in six starts since being traded from Arizona on July 31st. He allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings. He came in 4-0 in his five previous starts.

Jordan Lyles (10-8) made his first career start against the club that made him the 38th pick of the 2008 major league draft. The right-hander allowed two runs on six hits and struck out two over 6 1/3 innings for his fifth win in seven starts since being acquired on July 29th from Pittsburgh for right-hander Cody Ponce.

Josh Hader handled the ninth for his 28th save in 34 chances.

Alex Bregman hit his 33rd homer, a solo shot off Lyles in the sixth, extending his single-season career-best for home runs.

                        CARDINALS 1, GIANTS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jack Flaherty pitched one-hit ball over eight innings, Marcell Ozuna homered and St. Louis- with a fluky foul ball-turned-base hit - beat San Francisco.

Flaherty (9-7) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and dominated with eight strikeouts and a walk.

Mike Yastrzemski had San Francisco's only two hits.

St. Louis only had five hits, including one by Paul DeJong that looked like a trick pool shot. DeJong hit a ball that rolled about 10 feet foul of the first base line before spinning all the way back into fair territory roughly 3/4 of the way to the bag. DeJong raced to first to load the bases with two outs in the first.

San Francisco right-hander Dereck Rodriguez pitched out of the inning.

St. Louis has won 20 of its last 25 games. San Francisco has lost seven of its last eight.

                        NATIONALS 11, METS 10

WASHINGTON (AP) - Kurt Suzuki capped the largest ninth-inning comeback in Nationals history with a game-ending, three-run homer, helping Washington score seven runs in its final at-bat to beat New York.

Mets relievers Paul Sewald, Luis Avilan and Edwin Diaz pitched through the meltdown, retiring just one Nationals batter while Washington rallied for its 20th win in 26 games.

New York led 10-4 after scoring five runs in the top of the ninth. Wilson Ramos extended his hitting streak to 26 games and Pete Alonso crushed his 44th homer to put the Mets in position for a win over the current leaders in the NL wild-card hunt.

Sewald allowed four hits to his five batters, including Trea Turner's RBI double and Anthony Rendon's RBI single. Avilan allowed a single to load the bases, and then Diaz (1-7) relieved and allowed a two-run double to pinch-hitter Ryan Zimmerman followed by Suzuki's blast.

Javy Guerra (3-1) retired the only batter he faced to end the Mets' ninth.

                        ORIOLES 4, RAYS 2, 1ST GAME

                        RAYS 2, ORIOLES 0, 2ND GAME

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Austin Meadows homered, seven relievers combined on a five-hitter and playoff-contending Tampa Bay blanked Baltimore to split a doubleheader.

The Rays, who began the day with a slight lead atop the AL wild-card race, had their five-game winning streak stopped with a loss in the opener.

Diego Castillo (3-8), the third pitcher in a bullpen day, allowed one hit over two scoreless innings.

Meadows hit his 26th homer, a solo shot in the fourth. The Rays went up 2-0 in the seventh when Ji-Man Choi's hit to right bounced over Anthony Santander's head for a triple.

Avisail Garcia added an RBI single off Gabriel Ynoa (1-8), who gave up two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings.

In the opener, Rio Ruiz and Anthony Santander homered and Mark Trumbo drove in a run with a pinch-hit double.

Ty Blach (1-2) went five innings in his fourth start for Baltimore. Oliver Drake (3-2) took the loss.

Travis d'Arnaud's 16th home run accounted for the two runs off Blach.

                        TWINS 6, RED SOX 5

BOSTON (AP) - Nelson Cruz and Miguel Sano connected in the fifth inning to pad Minnesota's record home run total in a victory over Boston.

Jake Cave added a two-run triple for the Twins, who won for the ninth time in 10 games. Minnesota extended its major league record to 271 homers with nearly four weeks left in the season.

Rafael Devers and Andrew Benintendi homered for the Red Sox, who struggled against a parade of relievers and couldn't rally all the way back after falling behind 6-0.

Six Twins pitchers combined on a six-hitter, with only four hits allowed before Benintendi's two-out homer in the eighth off Taylor Rogers.

Lewis Thorpe (2-1) got the win despite allowing three runs and two hits in 3 1/3 innings. Rogers returned for the ninth and got his 23rd save.

Rick Porcello (12-11) struggled from the start.

                        CUBS 6, MARINERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Nicholas Castellanos homered and drove in four runs, and Chicago celebrated the return of Willson Contreras and Ben Zobrist by topping Seattle.

Jon Lester (12-9) escaped three bases-loaded jams while working six innings in his second straight win, helping Chicago stay three games back of NL Central-leading St. Louis.

Daniel Vogelbach's pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth accounted for Seattle's only run in its fourth loss in five games.

Felix Hernandez (1-5) lasted just three innings in his third start since coming off the injured list after being sidelined for more than three months with right shoulder stiffness.

                        ROYALS 6, TIGERS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jorge Soler broke the Kansas City home run record with his 39th of the season and Ryan O'Hearn hit a game-ending home run to beat Detroit.

O'Hearn sent the first pitch he saw from Zac Reininger (0-1) in the ninth inning over the fence in right field after a seesaw final three innings.

Tigers' starter Daniel Norris grooved Soler a 2-2 fastball in the third inning and the Royals' slugger didn't miss. The three-run shot broke a tie with Mike Moustakas, who set the previous record with 38 home runs in 2017. The home run also gave Soler 100 RBIs on the season, becoming the first Royal to cross the century mark since Eric Hosmer in 2016.

Ian Kennedy (2-2) blew his fourth save of the season, but got the win.

                            Armadillo:Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                            13) Someone posted what each starting QB is worth to their team’s power rating, courtesy of Betonline.ag :

                            Most value:
                            7.5 points: Aaron Rodgers
                            7 points: Mahomes, Wilson, Brady
6.5 points: Carson Wentz, Philip Rivers

                            Least value:
                            +1 point: Manning
                            0 points: Dalton, Fitzpatrick, Keenum
1 point: Allen, Carr, Flacco, Mariota, Murray

                            12) Nationals 11, Mets 10:
                            — deGrom vs Scherzer isn’t supposed to end 11-10.
                            — Mets led 5-4 after eight innings, then they scored five runs in top of 9th.
                            — Washington scored seven runs in bottom of 9th; Suzuki hit a walk-off homer.

                            11) Marlins 5, Pirates 4 (11)— Miami ends its 15-game road losing streak, the longest such losing streak since 2010. when the Pirates lost 17 consecutive road games.

                            10) Minnesota Twins set the all-time single season home run record this year, but they’re the only team this season that hasn’t hit two grand slams- they’ve only hit one.

                            9) Speaking of home runs, Jorge Soler hit his 39th homer this season Tuesday, setting the Kansas City Royals’ single season record.

                            8) Westgate’s football SuperContest pays the top 100 finishers, plus it pays $15,000 for the Week 4 leader, $15,000 for Week 8 leader and a $15,000 mini-contest for Weeks 15-17 (for the 2,907 early-bird entrants). Over 3,000 entrants are expected to be in the SuperContest this year.

It costs $1,500 to enter, and you pick five NFL games every week.

                            7) Los Angeles Rams did a smart thing Tuesday, inking QB Jared Goff to a contract extension that keeps him in LA until at least 2024. Goff is one of only 13 quarterbacks who started a Super Bowl in their first three years in the NFL- he is 24-14 as an NFL starter, 24-7 under Sean McVay.

Goff banks $134M for four years, $110M of it guaranteed.

                            6) My sleep habits are weird, so I can see lot of games when they’re played overseas, but these World Cup basketball games in China are on at times when even I am asleep, from 4:30-10:30 am, so I’m going to miss out on them, unless NBA TV or ESPN replays them.

Saw that the American team needed OT to beat Turkey by a point; that not good.

                            5) Monday night’s Colorado-Dodger game was the first time in major league history there were 11+ doubles and 11+ homers in the same game.

                            4) Cody Bellinger has 44 home runs this season, off of 44 different pitchers.

                            3) From ESPN’s Michele Steele: When the Chicago Bears won the 1963 NFL title (before the Super Bowl existed), the NFL didn’t have a championship trophy, so Chicago mayor Richard Daley had a trophy made and presented it to the Bears.

                            2) 2019 Oakland Raiders were the 14th team to be featured on Hard Knocks; here is how the other 13 teams did both that season and in their Week 1 game:
                            — 5 of 13 teams made the playoffs; none made the Super Bowl.
                            — 3 of last 5 years, featured head coach was fired during/after the season.
                            — Teams are 4-7-1 SU in Week 1; ’17 Bucs had their opener postponed by a storm.
                            — Teams are 5-6-1 vs spread in Week 1; 3-3 as favorites, 2-3-1 as underdogs.

                            1) If the baseball playoff started today (they don’t):
NL: Braves-Cardinals-Dodgers. Wild Card: Cubs @ Nationals
AL: New York-Twins-Astros. Wild Card: A’s @ Rays
