    • Friday's Diamond Notes
      Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Nationals (7-2 last nine)

Washington has vaulted into the spot Wild Card position in the National League following a three-game sweep of Cincinnati. The Nationals held off the Reds in each of the first two victories before Washington busted out for 16 runs in a two-inning span in Wednesday’s 17-7 rout. The only two losses in this stretch came to the streaking Mets as the Nationals blew a pair of late leads last weekend at Citi Field, including squandering a three-run ninth inning advantage last Friday.

The Nationals are playing with revenge tonight against the Brewers, as Milwaukee grabbed all three games at Miller Park in its previous matchup in May. Patrick Corbin takes the mound for Washington in the opener, as the Nationals’ southpaw is winless in his past two outings against the Diamondbacks and Mets. The Nats have won seven consecutive home starts made by Corbin, while all seven of those games finished UNDER the total.

Coldest team: Rangers (2-7 last nine)

Following a pair of wins over Houston at home after the All-Star break, Texas stood at 50-42 and were in the discussion for an AL Wild Card position. However, an eight-game losing streak followed as the Rangers haven’t been able to keep their heads above water and are far back in the Wild Card race. In the last 10 games, the Rangers have been held to two runs or less six times, while coming off a 13-6 setback to the Twins on Thursday to open their four-game set in Arlington.

Mike Minor was the subject of trade talk leading to the deadline, but the Rangers held onto their southpaw and he has turned in solid results of late. Minor is coming off a pair of scoreless efforts in back-to-back 1-0 victories at Milwaukee and Cleveland as an underdog. The Rangers are currently on a 4-1 UNDER run with Minor on the mound, but all four UNDERS came on the road as Minor has drilled the OVER in his past three starts in Arlington.

Hottest pitcher: Jeff Samardzija, Giants (9-9, 3.55 ERA)

San Francisco dominated Arizona last night in a 7-0 shutout at Chase Field to pull back to the .500 mark. Samardzija silenced the Phillies’ bats in his last start as the right-hander tossed eight innings and allowed two hits in a 3-1 victory last Saturday. The former Notre Dame standout has yielded two earned runs or less in seven of his past eight starts, while the Giants are 6-2 in these outings, which date back to start of July. Samardzija faces the D-backs tonight, as he has split a pair of starts at Arizona this season, while coming off an 11-5 victory in late June as he was staked an early 6-0 lead.

Coldest pitcher: Joe Musgrove, Pirates (8-11, 4.71 ERA)

Pittsburgh returns home following a rare series win against the Angels as the Pirates welcome in the struggling Cubs. Musgrove is coming off losses in his last two starts against the Mets and Cardinals, while allowing 16 hits and 11 runs in 8.2 innings of work. The right-hander has won only twice in his last six starts since Pittsburgh went 4-0 in his four outings prior to the All-Star break. The Pirates are 3-0 in Musgrove’s three home starts against the Cubs since 2018, but Pittsburgh has dropped 11 of its last 13 overall at PNC Park.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (8-2 last 10)

San Diego travels out east after cashing the OVER in six of seven games on its recent homestand. The Padres avoided the sweep by the Rays in Wednesday’s 7-2 victory to barely hit the OVER of 8 ½, as San Diego scored at least seven runs in six of the past 10 games. The Padres face the Phillies for a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park as all three games in their previous series at Petco Park all sailed OVER the total. Chris Paddack takes the mound for San Diego tonight as the Padres have hit the OVER in his last three outings, while the offense has provided him with at least eight runs of support in each start.

Biggest UNDER run: Cardinals (9-1 last 10)

St. Louis had its five-game winning streak snapped in Thursday’s 2-1 setback at Cincinnati, but the Cardinals allowed two runs or less for the sixth time in seven games. The Redbirds’ offense hasn’t been too hot on the road recently by scoring two runs or fewer in six of the past seven games away from Busch Stadium. The Cardinals continue their series at Great American Ballpark tonight as Adam Wainwright heads to the hill. St. Louis owns a 6-1 record in Wainwright’s last seven starts, while the Cardinals are 3-0 to the UNDER in his past three outings.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Athletics

Houston still owns a comfortable 8 ½-game lead in the American League West over Oakland in spite of losing four of its past five contests. The A’s held off the Astros in the opener of their four-game set at the Coliseum, 7-6, as Matt Chapman’s second home run of the night broke a 6-6 tie, marking the second win in the last seven matchups for Oakland.

After scoring only one run in the second game of the doubleheader loss to the White Sox on Wednesday, the Astros have put up 15 runs in the last two games. The only problem is, Houston lost both those games, as the Astros have dropped nearly nine units since their 23-2 blowout of the Orioles last Saturday.

Justin Verlander (15-4, 2.82 ERA) looks to rebound from the biggest favorite loss of his career last Sunday against the Orioles as a -430 favorite. Granted, Baltimore walked-off past the Houston bullpen with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Verlander still allowed four runs and nine hits in five innings. Verlander did rack up double-digit strikeouts for the fifth consecutive start, while the Astros fell to 7-2 in his last nine outings.

Tanner Roark (7-8, 4.06 ERA) makes his third start for Oakland since getting dealt from Cincinnati as the right-hander lost a 3-2 decision to the White Sox his last time out. Roark pitched well by striking out seven in 6.2 innings, but he allowed three runs as Oakland’s offense didn’t a score a run until the ninth inning. The A’s have won seven of their last eight home contests, while beating the Astros at the Coliseum for the first time since June 2.

      Betcha didn’t know:
The Dodgers and Braves both lead their divisions (you probably knew that). The two defending division champions hook up tonight at SunTrust Park. Los Angeles swept Atlanta earlier this season at Dodger Stadium as Mike Soroka makes his first home start since July 20. The Braves had won Soroka’s last six home starts prior to a loss to Washington on July 20, while Atlanta owns a 6-3 record in its past nine home series openers.

        • STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

          STREAKING

Jeff Samardzija, San Francisco Giants (9-9, 3.55 ERA, $452):
On a day where there are so many starters throwing straight fire, it’s kind of surprising to see Samardzija as our “Streaker” for his second straight start. But here we are.

The right-hander’s numbers are ridiculous right now. Samardzija has pitched to a 1.13 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP over his last four starts. He’s got some very nice value tonight as a +125 road dog in Arizona.

          SLUMPING

Aaron Brooks, Baltimore Orioles (2-6, 6.35 ERA, $288):
The 29-year-old Brooks has essentially been thrown to the wolves by the Orioles as an innings eater, and his last four starts have not been pretty. The right-hander has a 11.88 ERA and a 2.10 ERA over that span and now gets to face a deep Red Sox lineup. With the infuriatingly inconsistent Rick Porcello opposing Brooks, the Over 11.5 is worth a look.

          3 STRIKES

          HE’S STILL WORTHY

Noah “Thor” Syndergaard has got that lightning back and has been one of the big driving forces behind the Mets turnaround in the second half of the season. In six starts since the All-Star break, Syndergaard has pitched to a very impressive 1.91 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. Tonight, he faces a pretty bad Royals squad that is hitting just .199 against right-handers over their last 10 games. Take a hard look at the Mets on the runline.

          ROAD WARRIOR

Justin Verlander continues to get the job done in opposing ball parks. The Astros are 21-5 in his last 26 road starts and he has a 2.56 ERA on the road over the past two seasons. On top of that, Verlander has also been a thorn in the side of the A’s since joining the ‘Stros. Houston has won all five of his starts against them the last two seasons where he has pitched to a 2.25 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP. The Astros have also covered the runline in four of those five games and if you’re looking to bet them tonight, take them on the runline once again.

          UNDER THE RADAR

Tonight’s NL Central showdown between the Cubs and Pirates in Pittsburgh is an intriguing one. While Kyle Hendricks and Joe Musgrove come into this one not exactly on the top of their games, they love pitching in this matchup.

Musgrove, who has an 8.24 ERA over his last four starts, has allowed just two earned runs on 17 hits over his last four starts against the Cubs. While Hendricks, who was rocked for seven runs on 12 hits his last time out, has allowed two or fewer runs in his last six starts against the Buccos.

The Under is also 10-0 in those 10 games mentioned. Tonight’s total is currently 9.

          • Bellinger, Muncy, Turner HRs power Dodgers past Braves 8-3
            August 16, 2019
            By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) Cody Bellinger hit his 41st home run, Max Muncy and Justin Turner connected against reliever Sean Newcomb in the seventh inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 8-3 Friday night in a matchup of NL division leaders.

It was nothing new for the powerful Dodgers, who set a major league record with 22 homers in a five-game span when Will Smith launched a two-run shot off Jerry Blevins in the eighth.

The Dodgers improved to 18-6 against Atlanta since 2016, using Muncy's three-run homer and Turner's solo shot to lead 6-3 after Newcomb (5-3) relieved starter Mike Soroka.

Muncy's go-ahead homer sailed into the seats in right-center. Turner followed with a drive to the same part of the ballpark, the 14th time the Dodgers have gone back-to-back this season.

Adam Kolarek (5-3) earned the win as the NL West leaders improved to 13-3 since July 30.

            YANKEES 3, INDIANS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Masahiro Tanaka pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Aaron Judge broke out of his slump with two hits and two runs, and New York rebounded from its worst home loss of the season.

New York (82-42) clinched its 27th consecutive winning record since 1993, the second-longest streak in major league history behind the Yankees' run of 39 seasons from 1926-64.

Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres each had an RBI single for the AL East leaders, who increased their cushion to 10+ games over Tampa Bay. They won for the 15th time in 18 tries and bounced right back from a 19-5 defeat Thursday night in the opener of this four-game series.

Cleveland, neck-and-neck with Minnesota atop the AL Central and leading the wild-card standings, lost for only the fourth time in its last 19 road games. The Indians are a big league-best 45-19 since June 4.

            PHILLIES 8, PADRES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bryce Harper homered for the third straight game, Roman Quinn and J.T. Realmuto also went deep as Philadelphia beat San Diego.

The Phillies had 12 hits, and tied their season-high winning streak at four while pulling even with the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

San Digeo has lost four of five.

Vince Velasquez (5-7) allowed three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks.

Chris Paddack (7-6) took the loss. He allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

            NATIONALS 2, BREWERS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning, and Washington beat Milwaukee.

The Nationals' five-game winning streak matched their longest of the season.

Washington shortstop Trea Turner led off the eighth with a walk off Junior Guerra (6-4), moved to second on Adam Eaton's sacrifice and scored on Rendon's double off the wall in right.

Rendon also drove in Washington's first run with a double in the third.

Hunter Strickland (1-1) worked a scoreless eighth in his first decision since the Nationals acquired him from Seattle on July 31. Sean Doolittle finished up for his 28th save in 33 tries.

Milwaukee shortstop Orlando Arcia hit his 13th homer of the season.

            TIGERS 2, RAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Daniel Norris, Drew VerHagen and Joe Jimenez combined on a five-hitter to outpitch Charlie Morton, and Detroit beat Tampa Bay.

Norris went the first three innings, VerHagen (3-2) gave up only three hits over the next five and Jimenez earned his third save by striking out Eric Sogard with two men on base to end the game.

Morton (13-5) gave up one unearned run on three hits in seven innings. It was the 19th time in 26 starts he has given up two runs or less, and the 20th time he has given up five hits or less.

            RED SOX 9, ORIOLES 1

BOSTON (AP) - Andrew Benintendi and Mitch Moreland each hit RBI triples in the fourth inning, Rick Porcello held the Orioles to one run over six innings, and Boston beat Baltimore.

Porcello (11-9) allowed four hits and a pair of walks while striking out two.

Benintendi finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Mookie Betts hit a solo home run and Chris Owings drove in two for the Red Sox, who have won three straight games and six of their last 10.

Trey Mancini drove in the only run for Baltimore in its fifth straight loss. The Orioles have dropped nine of 10, with seven losses coming to the New York Yankees.

Orioles starter Aaron Brooks (2-7) gave up five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

            BLUE JAYS 7, MARINERS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Randal Grichuk hit back-to-back home runs, Jacob Waguespack won his third straight decision and Toronto beat Seattle.

Derek Fisher and Danny Jansen also went deep for the Blue Jays, who have hit 110 home runs since June 16. The New York Yankees entered play Friday with a major league-leading 112 homers in the same span. The Blue Jays have hit back-to-back homers 12 times this season, breaking the team record set in 1999.

Toronto has won five of seven and 12 of 18. The Mariners have lost five of eight and 10 of 13.

Waguespack (4-1) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings, winning for the third time in three starts.

Wade LeBlanc (6-7) has lost four straight decisions. He allowed seven runs and matched a career-worst by giving up 11 hits in seven innings.

            PIRATES 3, CUBS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pinch-hitter Cole Tucker drew a bases-loaded walk and Kevin Newman hit an RBI single, all with two out in the ninth inning, as Pittsburgh rallied to beat Chicago.

Tucker, pinch-hitting, worked a bases-loaded walk off Brandon Kintzler (2-2), and Newman followed with a single to center field on a full-count for his third game-ending hit of the season.

The Pirates won for the third time in four games.

Tony Kemp's two-run triple in the eighth inning off closer Felipe Vazquez gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead.

Joe Musgrove carried a shutout into the eighth inning before giving up consecutive singles to Jonathan Lucroy and pinch-hitter Ian Happ with one out. Musgrove was charged with two runs in 7 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and no walks. He matched his career high with nine strikeouts.

Keone Kela (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

            WHITE SOX 7, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Lucas Giolito struck out 11 over six innings, James McCann hit his second grand slam in three games and Chicago beat Los Angeles.

Giolito (13-6) became the first White Sox right-hander to have consecutive outings with 11 or more strikeouts since Javier Vazquez in 2007. He allowed two runs and three hits.

McCann, who launched a grand slam during the eighth inning Wednesday at Houston, did it again on Friday. His shot to left-center off a slider from Ty Buttrey was the fifth slam of his career. It also was McCann's 14th home run of the year, a career high. He had three hits.

AL home run leader Mike Trout hit a solo shot. It was his 41st of the season, which ties a career high from 2015.

Patrick Sandoval (0-1) allowed three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings.

            CARDINALS 13, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Dexter Fowler hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs, Paul DeJong and Paul Goldschmidt added two-run shots and St. Louis rocked Luis Castillo in romp over Cincinnati.

Kolten Wong had a solo homer among his four hits and Fowler, Marcell Ozuna and Tommy Edman each had three as the Cardinals piled up a season-high 18 hits and moved into sole possession of first place in the NL Central.

Rookie sensation Aristides Aquino, who was the first player since 1900 to hit at least nine home runs in his first 14 games, made it a record 10 in 16 with a two-run shot deep into the left-field seats in Cincinnati's three-run sixth.

Castillo (11-5) tied his career highs with nine hits and three homers allowed, and set a career worst by yielding eight runs in 4 1/3 innings. The All-Star right-hander had three strikeouts.

Adam Wainwright (9-8) improved to 4-1 over his last seven starts. He allowed eight hits and four runs with one walk and six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

            ROCKIES 3, MARLINS 0

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray struck out seven in eight strong innings and Nolan Arenado and Ryan McMahon homered for the second straight game, leading Colorado over Miami.

Gray scattered five hits and didn't walk a batter in his best outing of the season. He threw 100 pitches and was an inning short of the second complete game of his career.

McMahon hit a two-run homer in the second inning, his 15th of the season.

Miami's Sandy Alcantara (4-11) was nearly as good as Gray, going seven innings and allowing just three hits. He walked four, including one ahead of McMahon's homer, and struck out just two. He retired the last seven batters he faced.

Arenado homered in the eighth, his 28th. Scott Oberg got the final three outs for his fifth save.

            TWINS 4, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Max Kepler and Jonathan Schoop hit two-run home runs and Minnesota beat Texas.

The Twins increased their AL Central lead to 1+ games over the Cleveland Indians, who lost Friday night.

Schoop homered in the seventh inning following a one-out single by Marwin Gonzalez. Kepler hit his team-leading 33rd homer in the fourth inning on the first pitch after Miguel Sano reached when Rougned Odor dropped a popup in shallow right field.

Mike Minor (11-7) allowed all four runs in losing for the first time in four starts.

Sam Dyson (5-1) earned his first win since being acquired from the San Francisco Giants on July 31 with a scoreless seventh inning. Sergio Romo pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save in four tries since being acquired from Miami.

            ROYALS 4, METS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Mike Montgomery outpitched Noah Syndergaard, and Kansas City ended its 22-inning scoreless drought in a win over New York.

The Mets have lost four of five after a 15-1 stretch propelled them into the crowded NL wild-card race.

Montgomery (3-5) pitched six strong innings and allowed just one unearned run on five hits while striking out three and walking two. Ian Kennedy tossed a scoreless ninth for his 21st save in 24 opportunities.

Syndergaard (8-6) threw six innings and allowed just the two runs on five hits with six strikeouts, snapping a streak of six consecutive starts of at least seven innings. But after an RBI single from Michael Conforto in the third, the Mets couldn't generate anything else on offense.

                ********************

                Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

                13) Cubs led the Phillies 5-0 after seven innings Thursday night; Yu Darvish was dominant, giving up four hits, throwing only 92 pitches, but they took him out after seven innings. Why?

Darvish has thrown 100+ pitches in four starts this year, but hasn’t gotten an out after the 7th inning all season. Cubs’ bullpen blew this game; Phillies scored six runs in bottom of 9th inning, won 7-5, and there is unrest in Wrigleyville.

One professional gambler called it: “…….Cubs loser. Absolutely my worst beat of the season. Joe Maddon should have to pay off every Cubs bet. Idiot.”

                12) Christian Yelich, Matt Chapman have both hit 15 homers this year that put their team ahead in the game, which is tied for most in the major leagues this season.

                11) I say this every year, but every NFL team should have to dress three QB’s every game, even if the #3 QB is a designated 48th man on the roster— it is for the quality of the product, so people want to watch the games.

Few years ago, Houston lost their starting QB on the first series of the game, so they couldn’t run any long passes the rest of the day- if the #2 QB had gotten hurt, they would’ve had to use a WR and run the option the rest of the game. Thats not professional-level football.

NFL teams make a bleeping fortune; every team can afford to keep a #3 QB around. Eagles have already had two backup QB’s KO’d in their preseason games the month.

                10) There was a guy on NFL Network talking about fantasy football who says he has a team in 12 different leagues this season. How the hell does he keep track of all of them?

                9) 49ers are only team in NFL with more $$$ per year invested in running backs than receivers.

                8) From Warren Sharp:
                W-L records of top-15 draft pick QB’s since 2012:
                • As rookies: 45-70 (39%)
                • In year two: 97-56 (63%)

                7) Baseball stuff:
                — A’s DFA’d C Dustin Garneau.
                — Royals DFA’d OF Billy Hamilton, who runs fast but can’t hit.
                — Cubs brought 2B Addison Russell up from AAA, demoted OF Albert Almora.
                — San Diego put 2B Ian Kinsler (back) on the IL.

                6) Padres’ rookie SS Fernando Tatis Jr (back) is likely out for the season.

                5) Baltimore Ravens have now won their last 15 exhibition games (13-2 vs spread).

                4) From Joe Sheehan:
The percentage of runs scored in the major leagues on home runs is now a tick over 45%. The previous record is 42.3%, and until 2015 it had never been over 37%.

                3) Saw something on Twitter about Steak ’n Shake and In-n-Out Burger, and immediately I got hungry. We really do need a Steak ’n Shake in suburban Albany, preferably south Colonie.

                2) With 2:49 left in a meaningless exhibition game Thursday, rookie WR Andy Isabella caught a 59-yard TD pass from rookie QB Charles Kanoff. A kid from Princeton throwing a TD pass to a kid from UMass— it was cool to see the QB’s reaction/smile, a good moment.

Isabella is going to make the Cardinals’ roster, Kanoff may or may not (practice squad?), but it was certainly a moment he will never forget.

                1) NFL preseason is a time for overreactions:
                — Last week: Kyler Murray is the second coming of Michael Vick.
                — This week: Murray is too short; why did Arizona hire Kingsbury?

                • LEADING OFF: Dodgers-Braves, Giant debut, Houston hits skid
                  August 17, 2019
                  By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                  STAR ATTRACTIONS

The top two teams in the National League meet again when Cody Bellinger and the Dodgers visit Atlanta. Los Angeles starter Hyun-Jin Ryu (12-2) leads the majors with a 1.45 ERA. Mike Foltynewicz (4-5, 6.24 ERA) gets the ball for the Braves.

Bellinger hit his 41st home run Friday night, tied with Angels star Mike Trout for most in the majors, and the Dodgers won the series opener 8-3 while setting a big league record with 22 homers in a five-game span. The two-time defending NL champions also eliminated the Braves from the playoffs last year and swept them at home in May.

Atlanta outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. leads the NL in stolen bases and needs one more to join Trout in 2012 as the only players with a 30-30 season before their 22nd birthday. Acuna has 35 home runs.

KEEP `EM IN THE PARK, KID

Top prospect Logan Webb makes his major league debut for the Giants against Arizona. The 22-year-old Webb has pitched at four minor league levels this season. He also was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

The teams combined for 12 home runs Friday night as San Francisco won 10-9 in 11 innings - only the second game in major league history to feature a dozen long balls. Arizona and Philadelphia bashed 13 on June 10 at Citizens Bank Park.

Mike Yastrzemski went deep three times for the Giants, including a tiebreaking shot in the 11th. It was his 70th big league game. His Hall of Fame grandfather, Carl Yastrzemski, had one three-homer performance in 3,308 career games - at Tiger Stadium on May 19, 1974.

                  GONE COLD

Jose Altuve and the Astros look to snap a four-game losing streak as they play in Oakland again. Houston still has a 7+-game lead over the A's, who have beaten the AL West leaders the past two nights to move within a half-game of Tampa Bay for the league's second wild card.

Astros All-Star Gerrit Cole (right hamstring) could pitch in the upcoming Detroit series. Cole threw without pain Friday and will next throw a bullpen before a final decision is made. The right-hander was scratched before taking the mound in his previous scheduled start Tuesday at Chicago after feeling discomfort in his leg warming up.

                  WISE MAN COMETH

Bryce Harper and the Phillies go for a season-best fifth straight victory against San Diego. The $330 million slugger has homered in three consecutive games, helping Philadelphia's surge in the crowded NL wild-card chase. Since former manager Charlie Manuel took over as hitting coach Wednesday, the Phillies are batting .337 with 35 hits, eight doubles, seven homers and 25 RBIs. The move appears to be paying off in a big way for Harper, who is 6 for 12 with four homers and 10 RBIs in the last three games.

                  EYES ON MAX

Nationals ace Max Scherzer (mild rhomboid strain), who has made just one start since the All-Star break, is set to throw another simulated game before the Nationals host Milwaukee in a matchup of NL playoff contenders. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 9-5 with a 2.41 ERA.

                  GROWING PAINS

It appears Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is going to fall short in his push for NL Rookie of the Year. Tatis was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a back issue that ''most likely'' will end his season, according to manager Andy Green. The 20-year-old Tatis is batting .317 with 13 doubles, 22 homers and 53 RBIs in 84 games. Green said the injury was the result of ''common usage'' and will require rest to heal.

''It's disappointing, obviously,'' Green said. ''We're going to do what we can to take care of him, and we expect him to be a huge part of what we're doing going forward. It's been really tough for him the last couple of days to swallow. It's a tough blow.''

                    By Joe Williams

                    Saturday, Aug. 17

The Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals will square off in D.C. on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. with RHP Jordan Lyles and RHP Anibal Sanchez hooking up. The Nats posted a 2-1 victory in the series opener behind LHP Patrick Corin, hitting the under for just the third time in the past seven outings while winning for the fifth consecutive game.

Milwaukee enters 4-0 in the past four games against a right-handed starting pitcher, but they're just 4-9 in the past 13 on the road vs. RHP. In addition, the Brew Crew have dropped five in a row on the road against teams with a winning overall mark. On the flip side, the Nationals have won five in a row, four straight at home and six in a row against National League Central Division opponents. They're also an impressive 10-4 in the past 14 outings by Sanchez, and 4-1 in his past five when working on five days of rest. The Nats are also 11-4 in the past 15 at home vs. RHP, and 36-17 in the past 53 overall against a righty.

The Dodgers and Braves continue their series at SunTrust Park in suburban Atlanta, and L.A. looks to keep their foot on the gas after posting an 8-3 win in the series opener to move to 3-1 on the current road trip. They turn to LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu to keep the good times rolling. L.A. is 8-1 over Ryu's past nine outings against teams with a winning overall record, while cashing in each of his past six against NL East foes. The Dodgers have also picked up 39 wins over the past 53 against teams with a winning overall mark.

As far as the Braves are concerned, they roll out RHP Mike Foltynewicz. While they're 5-0 across his past five outings, they're just 3-10 in his past 13 outings overall, 1-4 in the past five on five days of rest and 4-10 in his past 14 against teams with a winning overall mark. They're also 2-9 in the previous 11 starts by Foltynewicz at home against tems with a winning overall record, while winning just one of his past 12 appearances against NL West clubs. They're also 0-4 in his past four showings against the Dodgers. L.A. has won four of Ryu's past five against Atlanta, while going 9-3 in their past 12 trips to Hotlanta.

Marlins RHP Hector Noesi faces Rockies RHP German Marquez as the 1993 MLB Expansion Teams do battle in Denver. The Marlins limp in with a 1-4 record over the past five, and they're 0-6 in the past six Game 2s or a series. They're also 8-20 in the past 28 vs. RHP, while going 18-48 in the past 66 on the road against righties. For the Rox, they're 8-3 in Marquez's past 11 home outings, 9-1 in his past 10 against losing teams and 5-1 in his past six inside the NL East. While they're just 11-28 in the past 39 overall, they are a perfect 5-0 in the past five against teams with a winning percentage under .400.

                    Sunday, Aug. 18

It's a lefty-on-lefty battle on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park as LHP Joey Lucchesi goes for the Padres against LHP Jason Vargas for the Phillies. Lucchesi is 7-7 with a 4.25 ERA with 125 strikeouts across 127 innings. The Padres have been skidding, and they're 0-6 in Lucchesi's past six outings, and 1-8 over his past nine. It isn't likely he'll be able to right the ship in Philly, as he has been a disaster on the road. Lucchesi is 6-3 with a 2.91 ERA across 74 1/3 innings at home, while going 1-4 with a 6.15 ERA across 52 2/3 innings on the road.

For the Phils, Vargas is 6-6 with a 4.03 ERA and .305 opponent on-base percentage across 111 2/3 innings with 88 strikeouts. In three outings with Philadelphia since coming over from the New York Mets, he has posted an 0-1 record, 4.15 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with two homers, seven walks and just seven strikeouts across 17 1/3 innings. He faced the Padres as a member of the Mets back on July 23, allowing just one hit, four walks and eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings in a victory.

Astros RHP Zack Greinke and Athletics LHP Brett Anderson tangle on Sunday afternoon in the Bay Area. Greinke has allowed seven earned runs and 14 hits with four walks over 12 innings in two outings with the Astros since coming over from the Diamondbacks in a deadline deal. Houston is 2-0 in his two starts with the team, but this will be his first outings inside the AL West. Anderson is 10-8 with a 3.95 ERA and a .308 opponent on-base percentage. He has just 71 strikeouts over 139 innings, as power isn't exactly his game. The A's are just 1-3 in his past four outings, and the A's are just 1-3 in his past four at home, too.

In the Sunday Night Baseball game in the Steel City, Cubs LHP Jose Quintana will face RHP Mitch Keller. Chicago has posted a 10-7 record, 4.11 ERA and .305 opponent OBP across 135 2/3 innings. He is 2-0 with a pair of quality starts on July 4 and 14 against the Pirates, including Independence Day at PNC Park. Chicago is 7-1 across Quintana's past eight starts dating back to June 22, and he is coming off a 14-strikeouts performance last time out in Philadelphia, a no-decision on Aug. 13. Keller will be making his fifth start of the season, and just his second since being recalled from the minors on Aug. 12. Overall he is 1-1 with a 7.94 ERA and .417 opponent OBP. He was muched better last time out, allowing two runs - one earned - and five hits over five innings in a win against the Angels on the road. It was Pittsburgh's first win in his four starts this season.

                    Weather Report

For the second consecutive afternoon, the Mets and Royals will be contending with the winds. This time the winds will be blowing out from 11-14 mph to the left-center field power alley. The Twins and Rangers will also be facing a hot wind blowing in from right field at 10-13 mph for the second straight afternoon.

In the Bay Area, the Astros and Athletics will also be facing 11-14 mph winds blowing out to the left-center field power alley. For the second straight day, too, all MLB venues appear to be precipitation-free.
