  • Hosmer homers, Padres edge Yankees 5-4
    May 28, 2019
    By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Devin Smeltzer added another chapter to his inspiring comeback story, pitching six shutout innings in his big league debut and helping the Minnesota Twins beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 Tuesday night.

Diagnosed with a grapefruit-sized cancerous tumor against his bladder when he was just 9 years old, Smeltzer wasn't deterred in his goal to reach the majors. The 23-year-old got his chance this week after the Twins put pitcher Michael Pineda on the injured list with right knee tendinitis.

Smeltzer allowed three hits, walked none and struck out seven. Showing a funky, three-quarter style delivery, the lanky left-hander threw 69 pitches, 53 for strikes.

Smeltzer left with the game scoreless and got a no-decision.

Eddie Rosario homered and Max Kepler added a two-run double for Minnesota, which has won 12 of 14 and has the best record in the majors.

Keston Hiura and Yasmani Grandal homered late and Alex Claudio took the loss for the Brewers.

Matt Magill (1-0) tossed a scoreless inning and Ryne Harper got the final out for his first career save.

Milwaukee starter Zach Davies allowed five hits and struck out four in six shutout innings.

    PADRES 5, YANKEES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer during a big first inning against Masahiro Tanaka, and San Diego manager Andy Green burned through his bullpen to help hold off New York.

New York tried to rally in the rain, getting three runs in the seventh inning during a stretch when Green used six pitchers to face eight batters. San Diego escaped the seventh on Gary Sanchez's flyout, Craig Stammen pitched the eighth and former Yankee reliever Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his 21st save in 21 chances.

The game ended when video review overturned a safe call on DJ LeMahieu's grounder, giving the Padres a double play.

Sanchez hit a solo homer in the fourth for the AL East-leading Yankees, who lost for the third time in 15 games. It was Sanchez's 17th homer, one shy of his total from an injury-spoiled 2018.

Eric Lauer (4-4) pitched one-run ball over 5 1/3 innings for San Diego, getting four strikeouts and allowing four hits. The Padres stopped a two-game slide that followed a five-game winning streak.

Tanaka (3-4) ended a string of solid starts, giving up five runs in six innings.

    NATIONALS 5, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Stephen Strasburg matched his season high with 11 strikeouts in seven innings and Washington took the lead on three straight walks to beat Atlanta.

Howie Kendrick had three hits, including his ninth homer, for Washington. Trea Turner also had three hits.

Braves rookie Austin Riley's two-run homer in the eighth cut Washington's lead to 5-4. Riley had three hits.

Sean Doolittle earned his 10th save in 12 chances.

Strasburg (5-3) gave up an RBI single to Nick Markakis in Atlanta's two-run fourth. He struck out two batters in each of the first three innings and gave up only five hits and two runs.

Max Fried (7-3) hit Victor Robles with a pitch and issued two walks in Washington's three-run sixth. Fried, who gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings, left the game after walking Adam Eaton with the bases loaded, giving the Nationals a 3-2 lead.

Anthony Swarzak, making his Atlanta debut after he was acquired from Seattle on May 20, walked Anthony Rendon to force in another run.

    ASTROS 9, CUBS 6

HOUSTON (AP) - Alex Bregman homered twice, his second a tiebreaking two-run shot in the sixth inning that propelled injury-weakened Houston over Chicago in a win that gave manager AJ Hinch his 500th career victory.

Bregman, who is tied for the American League lead with 17 homers, got his first one in the third inning off starter Jon Lester (3-4). It was tied at 6-6 when he connected on Brad Brach's first pitch for the second.

Roberto Osuna struck out one in a perfect ninth for his 15th save.

David Bote homered twice for the Cubs and Jason Heyward, Addison Russell and Kyle Schwarber each hit one.

Houston's Michael Brantley had two hits and two RBIs and catcher Garrett Stubbs added two hits and drove in a run in his major league debut, a day after Jack Mayfield played in his first major league game.

Lester lost his third straight decision by allowing eight hits and a season-high seven earned runs.

Josh James (2-0) worked 2 1/3 innings, striking out four and allowing two hits and three earned runs.

    REDS 11, PIRATES 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Derek Dietrich hit three homers - all two-run shots for Cincinnati- and Pittsburgh suffered yet another injury to its rotation in a loss to the Reds.

Dietrich connected in the fourth off Jordan Lyles (5-2), who left after the inning with discomfort in his left hamstring. Dietrich then connected off Geoff Hartlieb in the fifth and again in the seventh for his first three-homer game. His 17 homers set a career high, and 12 of his last 17 hits have been home runs.

Scooter Gennett was the last Reds player with so many homers, matching the major league record with four on June 6, 2017.

Lucas Sims (1-0), called up pregame, struck out a career-high nine in 7 1/3 innings.

Pittsburgh lost for the seventh time in nine games. Pirates rookie Kevin Newman hit a grand slam in the eighth for his first major league homer.

    TIGERS 3, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Matthew Boyd took a five-hitter into the seventh inning, Niko Goodrum homered and Detroit interrupted a prolonged slump by defeating Baltimore.

JaCoby Jones had two doubles and an RBI for the Tigers, who won for only the second time in 14 games since May 12.

Boyd (5-4) struck out eight and allowed six hits in six-plus innings. Shane Greene got three straight outs in the ninth for his 17th save in 18 tries.

It was Detroit's second shutout of the season, and the fourth time Baltimore has been blanked.

The game drew a crowd of 8,106, the seventh time in 27 games the Orioles have attracted fewer than 10,000 fans to Camden Yards. Baltimore has lost 16 of 20 and owns the worst record in the majors (17-38).

Orioles starter Dylan Bundy (2-6) gave up three runs and seven hits. He struck out eight, the last one giving him 500 for his career.

Recalled from Triple-A Norfolk earlier in the day, DJ Stewart had three hits and a stolen base for Baltimore.

    INDIANS 7, RED SOX 5

BOSTON (AP) - Roberto Perez and Greg Allen homered during a five-run ninth inning as Cleveland beat Boston.

Jordan Luplow added a two-run double after Cleveland tied it and and Brad Hand survived a bit of a shaky ninth for his 14th save, completing a rare come-from-behind win for the Indians.

Nick Wittgren (2-0) got the win despite allowing two runs on three hits in the eighth, his only inning.

Ryan Brasier blew a save opportunity and a 5-2 lead in the ninth. Travis Lakins (0-1) took the loss.

The wild ending spoiled strong starts by Boston's David Price and Cleveland's Zach Plesac, who carried a shutout into the sixth inning of his major league debut.

Price allowed only three hits and struck out six in six innings.

Plesac went 5 1-3 innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk, striking out two.

    ROCKIES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 2

DENVER (AP) - Chris Iannetta hit a two-run homer in the seventh, sending Colorado past Arizona.

Iannetta was a late addition to the lineup due to Tony Wolters' bruised finger.

After a solid outing by starter Antonio Senzatela, the bullpen took over. Jairo Diaz (1-0) earned his first career win and Chad Bettis earned his first-ever save by throwing two scoreless innings.

Eduardo Escobar hit his 13th homer of the season for Arizona. He also had an RBI single.

Merrill Kelly (4-6) had an efficient outing going before Iannetta's homer. The right-hander went 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs.

    RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Austin Meadows homered for the third straight game and five Tampa Bay pitchers combined to throw a six-hitter and beat struggling AL East rival Toronto.

The second-place Rays won for the fourth straight time, improving to a season-best 13 games over .500 before an announced crowd of just 5,786 - smallest ever for a Rays home game at Tropicana Field.

The Blue Jays have dropped six of seven and fell to 0-8-1 in their series against Tampa Bay, dating to August 2017.

Meadows hit his 12th homer of the season, a solo shot to right field off reliever Thomas Pannone in the seventh inning.

Avisail Garcia had an inside-the-park homer off Clayton Richard (0-1) in the third and also scored on a first-inning sacrifice fly.

Meanwhile, the Rays bullpen - beginning with opener Ryne Stanek - limited the Blue Jays to four singles and a pair of doubles. Ryan Yarbrough (4-1) pitched 3 2/3 innings for the win.

    MARLINS 11, GIANTS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Jorge Alfaro and Garrett Cooper hit Miami's first three-run homers of the year and sent San Francisco to its sixth straight loss.

Trevor Richards (2-5) gave up a homer to Joe Panik on the game's first pitch but blanked San Francisco thereafter. He allowed two hits and one run in seven innings.

The Marlins earned their eighth victory in 11 games but still have the worst record in the National League. Starlin Castro's two-out, two-run double in the third put Miami ahead to stay. Rookie Harold Ramirez had three hits to hike his average to .413 in 13 games. Pinch hitter Rosell Herrera hit his first homer of the year in the eighth to make the score 11-1.

Jeff Samardzija (2-4) lost his third start in a row. He allowed a season-high five earns runs in four-plus innings, matching his shortest outing of the year.

Miami improved to 10-4 against the Giants since 2017.

    PHILLIES 4, CARDINALS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cesar Hernandez hit a go-ahead two-run homer, Nick Pivetta threw five tough innings and Philadelphia beat slumping St. Louis.

Paul Goldschmidt and Marcell Ozuna hit homers in the first inning, but the Cardinals wasted a 3-0 lead and lost for the 11th time in 15 games.

Pivetta (3-1) allowed three runs and three hits, striking out six in his first start since a demotion to the minors.

Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (4-5) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings with a season-high 10 strikeouts.

Edgar Garcia got five outs, Seranthony Dominguez retired all four batters he faced and Hector Neris finished for his 10th save in 10 tries.

    WHITE SOX 4, ROYALS 3

WHITE SOX 2, ROYALS 1, SUSPENDED GAME

CHICAGO (AP) - Lucas Giolito struck out 10 while winning his fifth straight start and Chicago posted two victories over Kansas City.

Hours after Yolmer Sanchez hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to give Chicago a 2-1 win in the resumption of a suspended game, Giolito (7-1) put on quite a performance.

The right-hander gave up a three-run homer to Alex Gordon in the first, then dominated the rest of the way. He allowed three hits over eight inning and improved to 6-0 in his past eight starts.

Alex Colome worked the ninth for his 10th save in 10 chances after getting the win earlier in the day. And the White Sox made it back-to-back victories after losing six of eight.

Brad Keller (3-6) gave up four runs and 10 hits in six innings for Kansas City. The Royals have lost nine of 12.

        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

        13) 5-star Class of 2019 basketball recruit RJ Hampton announced Tuesday that he will skip college and will play professionally in Australia/New Zealand this season to prep for the 2020 NBA Draft. He reclassified from the ’20 class to 2019 earlier this spring with an eye on becoming eligible for the 2020 draft.

So this is a 6-5 guard who is supposed to be in a senior in high school, but who will travel all the way to Australia and play pro ball this season, then go to the NBA Draft when he could’ve been a freshman in college, in the 2020-21 season.

It is a free country, but sometimes you wish parents would let their kids be kids. It’ll be interesting to see how this works out, and if others follow his path.

        12) Here are some guys who shunned college for playing overseas:

        — Brandon Jennings has scored 7,801 points in nine seasons (14.1 ppg); he was a double-figure scorer and starter for the first six years of his career, and has earned around $41M total.

        — Emmanuel Mudiay has scored 2,901 points in four NBA seasons, including 14.8 points per game for the Knicks; he’s earned around $14M so far.

        — Three years ago, Terrance Ferguson skipped college to play pro ball in Australia; he’s played the last couple years for Oklahoma City, scoring 5.2 ppg in 20 mpg over 135 games, earning $3.9M for those two seasons.

        — Jeremy Tyler played overseas in 2010, then scored 3.6 ppg in 9.9 mpg in 103 NBA games in three seasons. He still plays ball overseas; he made $2,396,488 in the NBA.

        11) Yesterday, on the same day Bill Buckner passed away, the Twins called up a rookie pitcher named Devin Smeltzer, who then called one of his old coaches, former big league pitcher Woody Williams, to tell him the good news.

Back in 1993, when Williams got called up to the majors for the first time by Toronto. he was told by an instructor in the Blue Jays’ organization. A guy named Bill Buckner.

        10) Hitters who have come up with most men on base this season:
        — Marcell Ozuna, StL- 173
        — Xander Bogaerts, Bos- 171
        — Rhys Hoskins, Phil- 161

        9) Hitters who have knocked in highest %age of runners from 3rd base (minimum of 10 runners on 3rd base):
        — Gio Urschela, NYY- 10-14 (71.4%)
        — Eric Hosmer, SD— 8-12 (66.7%)
        — Max Kepler, Minn- 10-16 (62.5%)

        8) Hitters who have knocked in lowest %age of runners from 3rd base (minimum of 10 runners on 3rd base):
        — John Hicks/Francisco Cervelli- 1-16 (6.25%)
        — Martin Maldonado, KC- 1-14 (7.1%)
        — Randal Grichuk, Tor- 2-19 (10.5%)

        7) College basketball transfer portal:
        — Joey Hauser jumps from Marquette to Michigan State.
        — Sam Hauser jumps from Marquette to Virginia.

        6) Baseball stuff:
        — Tigers put 2B Josh Harrison (hamstring) on IL.
        — Angels put 3B Zach Cosart (shoulder) on IL.
        — Twins put P Michael Pineda (knee) on IL.

        5) Phillies’ OF Odubel Herrera was placed on administrative leave by MLB after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Atlantic City Monday.

Very unusual for teams not to play on Memorial Day; I’m guessing Herrera wishes the Phillies had a game yesterday. This will wind up as a very expensive visit to Atlantic City.

        4) When major league teams come to New York City, they get to explore a little, whether it be at MLB Network, or the Topps baseball card HQ, or other media outlets.

Bob Scanlan, a Padres broadcaster, posted a baseball card of a young Tony Gwynn playing for San Diego, but wearing number 53, not number 19. Looked like a spring training game.

        3) Joe Gibbs got elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame last week; he is already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, so that puts him in a unique place in sports history.

Gibbs won three Super Bowl titles with the Redskins, with three different QB’s.

        2) Two TV series I wish hadn’t ended:
        — Without a Trace was a show about finding missing people; Anthony LaPaglia played Jack Malone, a sarcastic FBI agent who led the unit, but who also had problems of his own. Just an excellent show; it still re-runs late night on cable.

        — In Plain Sight used to be on USA Network; this show was about people re-located in the Witness Protection Program. They had some really good stories, there was a good mix of drama with some humor added in, but the show’s star got a better offer to be in a show on network TV, so she quit and the show ended. Too bad.

        1) Speaking of late night TV, I see those Peloton exercise bike commercials and I want to trade my exercise bike in for one of those, since everyone on their commercials looks like an Olympic athlete. No overweight, bald people ride a Peloton; you think it would help? Nah, me either.

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

          CONGRATS

The inspiring story of Twins pitcher Devin Smeltzer is sure to spread following his dazzling debut in the big leagues.

Diagnosed with a grapefruit-sized cancerous tumor against his bladder when he was just 9 years old, Smeltzer wasn't deterred in his goal to reach the majors. He made it Tuesday and pitched six shutout innings for Minnesota against Milwaukee at Target Field.

The lanky, 23-year-old lefty with a funky delivery gave up three hits, walked none and struck out seven. He got a no-decision in a game the Twins won.

''I know that tomorrow, between the lines, may not happen. It's been told to me before, and I don't take a day for granted out there,'' he said later.

          PAD PAX

Yankees lefty James Paxton is set to start against San Diego after missing nearly a month because of inflammation in his left knee. He is 3-2 with a 3.11 ERA in seven starts this season. Manager Aaron Boone says Paxton will have a limited pitch count as he comes off the injured list.

Padres rookie Chris Paddack (4-2, 1.93) will start at Yankee Stadium. The 23-year-old righty was scratched from a scheduled start in Toronto on Sunday with a stiff neck.

          ANYONE HOME?

AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell and the Tampa Bay Rays will see how many fans show up at Tropicana Field for the series finale against Toronto.

An announced gathering of 5,786 - the smallest crowd ever for the Rays at the Trop - saw Tampa Bay beat the Blue Jays 3-1 on Tuesday.

''I noticed it during the anthem, and I was like: `Oh it's still early, maybe people will still file in,''' Rays pitcher Ryne Stanek said.

The Rays routinely rank at or near the bottom of the major leagues in attendance. They began the night averaging an AL-worst 14,578 per game.

There have been only two smaller crowds for big league games played in the domed stadium, both in 2017 when Hurricane Harvey forced relocation of a Rangers-Astros series from Houston. Those teams attracted a low of 3,385.

          NAME GAME

Cardinals left-hander Genesis Cabrera makes his major league debut when he starts at Philadelphia against ace Aaron Nola (5-0, 4.53 ERA).

          CHECK THEM

The Twins will see how center fielder Byron Buxton is a feeling, a day after he crashed hard into the fence at Target Field trying to catch a flyball. Buxton exited early. Manager Rocco Baldelli said Buxton was OK and that it was a precautionary move. ... Cubs infielder Kris Bryant has missed two games after an outfield collision with Jason Heyward, but could return for the series wrapup at Houston.

                  • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                    Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Athletics (10-1 last 11)

In spite of having its 10-game winning streak snapped by the Angels on Tuesday, the A’s remain red-hot as they sit in second place of the AL West at 29-26. Prior to last night’s 6-4 defeat to the Halos, Oakland swept three consecutive series and topped Los Angeles on Monday, 8-5. The offense has been clicking well by scoring at least five runs in nine wins during that hot streak, which doesn’t include the five runs scored at Detroit on May 19 in a suspended contest.

The A’s go for the series victory against the Angels this afternoon at the Coliseum as Daniel Mengden takes the mound. The Oakland right-hander has allowed one earned run in each of his past two starts, as the A’s defeated the Mariners and Tigers in those contests. The A’s are looking to avoid consecutive home losses for the first time since dropping three straight to the Blue Jays in late April.

Coldest team: Giants (0-6 last six)

The other Bay Area squad has gone backwards recently as San Francisco has failed to plate more than four runs in nine consecutive contests. The Giants’ pitching staff has been knocked around lately by giving up double-digit runs in three of the past four defeats, including allowing 11 runs to the Marlins in Tuesday’s eight-run road loss.

San Francisco tries to turn things around with its ace on the mound tonight as Madison Bumgarner has tossed at least six innings in five consecutive starts. Bumgarner has picked up victories in each of his last two road outings at Colorado and Arizona, but lost in his last start at Miami last season, 7-5.

Hottest pitcher: Wade Miley, Astros (5-2, 3.32 ERA)

For all the aces in the Houston rotation, Miley has turned into the most reliable southpaw after Dallas Keuchel didn’t return this season. The Astros are 6-1 in Miley’s past seven outings, while the veteran has yielded two earned runs or less in five of the last six trips to the mound. Houston has won all five of Miley’s starts at Minute Maid Park, with four of those games finishing UNDER the total. The Astros seek the sweep of the Cubs tonight, although Miley is listed at several sports books as a slight underdog.

Coldest pitcher: Pablo Lopez, Marlins (3-5, 5.40 ERA)

Just breaking down two of Lopez’s last three starts at the Mets and Nationals and one would think the right-hander has put together a dreadful season. Lopez was knocked around for 10 hits and 10 runs in three innings of an 11-2 loss at New York on May 10, while lasting less than four innings and giving up seven hits and four earned runs in a 12-10 setback at Washington last Friday. However, Lopez put together his best start of the season in between those two terrible outings by allowing one hit in seven scoreless innings of a 2-0 home win over the Mets on May 18. The question heading into tonight’s contest with San Francisco is which Lopez are you going to see. At Marlins Park, Lopez owns a solid 1.93 ERA, but Miami is 2-2 in his four home outings.

Biggest OVER run: Cubs (9-1 last 10)

Chicago remains atop the NL Central in spite of dropping the first two games at Houston in a battle of heavyweights. The Cubs scored 11 runs on Monday and Tuesday at Minute Maid Park, but Chicago allowed 15 runs to mark its seventh consecutive OVER. In the last six games, the Cubs have allowed 9, 6, 6, 10, 6, and 9 runs, while giving up less than three runs once in the past 14 contests. Kyle Hendricks began May with three terrific starts by allowing two runs in 25 innings of work, but the Cubs’ right-hander has seen the OVER hit his last two outings by yielding seven runs in the last 11.2 innings.

Biggest UNDER run: Cardinals (7-2 last nine)

St. Louis scored three first inning runs with a pair of home runs on Tuesday night, but the Cardinals failed to cross home plate the rest of the evening in a 4-3 defeat at Philadelphia. The Redbirds have scored four runs or less in their past eight losses, while posting at least six runs in the last six wins, so this team isn’t winning low-scoring contests. St. Louis turns to southpaw Genesis Cabrera, who is making his Major League debut tonight after getting acquired from Tampa Bay last season. The Phillies send out ace Aaron Nola, who has hit the OVER in nine of 11 starts this season, including five of seven at Citizens Bank Park.

Matchup to watch: Mets vs. Dodgers

Los Angeles and New York have split the first two contests of their four-game series at Dodger Stadium in a pair of high-scoring affairs. The Dodgers won the opener, 9-5 on Monday, but the Mets rebounded with a 7-3 triumph last night as a +170 underdog. Michael Conforto’s seventh inning grand slam snapped a 2-2 tie as the Mets’ right fielder lifted New York to its seventh victory in the last nine games.

Noah Syndergaard heads to the mound for the Mets tonight looking to bounce back after getting tagged for 10 hits and six runs in 5.1 innings of a 9-8 setback to the Tigers last Friday. Although Syndergaard received a no-decision, the Mets lost as a hefty -280 favorite, while New York dropped a 3-0 decision at Miami on May 19 with the right-hander on the hill as a -190 favorite.

Walker Buehler counters for the Dodgers, as Los Angeles has won eight consecutive games off a loss since April 25. Buehler has caught fire of late by giving up two earned runs in his past three starts, while shutting down the Pirates last Friday in a 10-2 blowout as a nearly -200 road favorite. L.A. is also riding an eight-game OVER streak, as the Dodgers have allowed 19 runs in the past three contests.

Betcha didn’t know: Run support has been a problem for AL Cy Young winner Blake Snell, as he heads to the hill tonight when the Rays host the Blue Jays. Tampa Bay has lost four of Snell’s 10 starts this season, as the Rays have scored two runs or less in the six losses. One of Snell’s best outings came at Toronto on April 13 as he allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, but the Rays lost 3-1 as a -200 road favorite.

                        • Santana powers Indians past Red Sox 14-9
                          May 29, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Carlos Santana homered and hit Cleveland's first triple of the season, Greg Allen added a pair of three-baggers and the Indians pounded out a season-high 18 hits in a 14-9 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

Santana, who finished a single shy of the cycle, was 3 for 4 with five RBIs as Cleveland matched its season best for runs.

Jose Ramirez had two doubles and two RBIs. Allen and Kevin Plawecki also drove in two runs apiece for the Indians, who won two of three against the World Series champions in Boston.

The Indians, shut out over the first seven innings Tuesday night before rallying with seven runs over the last two for a 7-5 win, scored at least once in each of the first seven innings Wednesday.

Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Andrew Benintendi and Xander Bogaerts homered for Boston. The Red Sox scored three in the eighth, two on Bogaerts' 10th home run of the season, to pull to 14-9 and loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before the Indians called on Brad Hand to close it out for his 15th save.

Shane Bieber (4-2) got the win despite allowing six runs and eight hits in five innings. He struck out six.

Ryan Weber (1-1) took the loss.

                          ANGELS 12, ATHLETICS 7

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Gold Glove first baseman Matt Olson made a rare throwing error in the 11th inning to allow the go-ahead run to score and Los Angeles beat Oakland and sent the Athletics to their second straight loss after a 10-game winning streak.

Mike Trout was rested a day after fouling a ball off the top of his right foot.

Noe Ramirez (2-0) retired six batters to win. Cesar Puello had three hits, including his first career home run, and drove in four runs.

Puello was hit by a pitch from Lou Trivino (2-1) leading off the 11th and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Brian Goodwin walked, Luis Rengifo attempted to sacrifice both runners over. Olson attempted to field the bunt barehanded and bobbled the ball briefly before his throw to first sailed wide and into foul territory near the Angels bullpen.

Tommy LaStella singled three times and Jared Walsh had two hits and an RBI for the Angels. Shohei Ohtani singled, walked twice and scored once.

Olson, Mark Canha and Marcus Semien homered for Oakland.

                          PIRATES 7, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Josh Bell tied Pittsburgh's record with his 12th homer in May, and the Pirates stopped Derek Dietrich's home run spree in beating Cincinnati for a split of the teams' four-game series.

Bell's three-run homer tied Jason Bay's mark from May 2006. His 23rd extra-base hit in May left him one shy of Paul Waner's club record for any month. He had three hits, raising his average to .345 with 18 homers overall.

Colin Moran also had a three-run shot off Anthony DeSclafani (2-3), who has given up seven homers in his last three starts.

Left-hander Steven Brault (2-1) fanned Dietrich twice during his latest shutdown performance against the Reds. Brault is 4-0 career against Cincinnati with a 1.03 ERA and a scoreless streak of 19 2/3 innings. Brault allowed three singles and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings of his third start.

                          YANKEES 7, PADRES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - DJ LeMahieu and Luke Voit jolted rookie Chris Paddack with instant home runs, James Paxton pitched four hitless innings in his return from the injured list and New York beat San Diego.

Gio Urshela also connected off Paddack, Gleyber Torres hit a late homer and Voit added his first big league triple as the Yankees won their eighth straight series.

San Diego didn't get a hit until the sixth when Wil Myers' blooper bounced out of LeMahieu's glove as he drifted out from second base.

Paddack (4-3) was pulled after five innings trailing 4-0.

Jonathan Holder (4-2) worked two innings and earned the win as the Yankees used five pitchers to complete the four-hitter.

                          NATIONALS 14, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Anibal Sanchez allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, Howie Kendrick hit a three-run double and Washington withstood a grand slam by rookie Austin Riley to beat Atlanta.

Sanchez (1-6) returned to Atlanta, where he thrived in 2018, to earn his first win of the season. He was perfect through 5 1/3 innings and allowed one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts.

Juan Soto and Matt Adams homered for Washington, which swept the two-game series and ended Atlanta's streak of five straight series victories. The Nationals have won five of six.

Kevin Gausman (2-4) gave up eight runs, matching his career high, on eight hits and two walks while recording only three outs.

                          CUBS 2, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Kyle Hendricks pitched eight strong innings, Kyle Schwarber homered for the second straight game and Kris Bryant added a solo shot in his return to the lineup to help Chicago avoid a sweep with a win over Houston.

The game included a scary and jarring moment when a young fan was hit by a foul line drive off the bat of Albert Almora Jr. in the fourth inning. The Astros did not provide an immediate update on the girl's condition, though a photo taken by The Associated Press appeared to show her conscious and crying as she was quickly whisked away and nearby fans looked on.

Almora, the Cubs' center fielder, and other players from both teams were visibly shaken up by the scene.

Hendricks (5-4) allowed four hits and one run with seven strikeouts for his fourth straight win. Steve Cishek worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save.

Wade Miley (5-3) worked seven innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts.

                          ROCKIES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

DENVER (AP) - Jeff Hoffman pitched five solid innings and beat out an infield single to drive in a key run as Colorado beat Arizona.

Brendan Rodgers had a two-run single and Trevor Story added three hits for the Rockies, who won their season-high fourth in a row at home and clinched a series win in the four-game set.

Carson Kelly homered and singled to drive in two runs for the Diamondbacks. Adam Jones also went deep and rookie first baseman Kevin Cron doubled twice and scored a run.

Hoffman (1-1) allowed three runs and seven hits, helping the Rockies get back to .500 at 27-27. He struck out six and walked two.

Scott Oberg got three outs for his first save.

Robbie Ray (4-2) gave up five runs - four earned - in 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out six as his four-game winning streak ended.

                          RANGERS 8, MARINERS 7

SEATTLE (AP) - Nomar Mazara and Asdrubal Cabrera hit consecutive doubles in the ninth inning, lifting Texas over Seattle.

The Rangers capitalized on three errors and a wild pitch by relief pitchers in the sixth inning, leading to one of four lead changes. Shin-Soo Choo then hit a two-run single in the eighth to tie it at 7 in an unexpected pinch-hit appearance to set up Texas' ninth-inning rally.

Texas scored three runs in the first against Wade LeBlanc, but LeBlanc settled in and worked through the fifth inning, leaving with Seattle down 3-0.Things went very wrong when LeBlanc was replaced.

Jesse Biddle struck out the first batter he faced, but then flubbed Mazara's comebacker for one error and threw the ball away for another, allowing Mazara to reach second. Mazara got to third on a wild pitch while Biddle walked Cabrera, setting up Rougned Odor's RBI single and Ronald Guzman's sacrifice fly for a 5-4 Rangers lead. Austin Adams relieved Biddle, threw wildly to first on a pickoff attempt but evaded further damage by striking out Jeff Mathis.

Haniger rallied the Mariners again with a sixth-inning home run to make it 7-5.

The bullpen couldn't hold that lead, either. Mazara singled to lead off the eighth and Odor walked before Choo's two-run single tied it. Mazara and Cabrera doubled off Anthony Bass (0-1) for the lead, and Shawn Kelley picked up his sixth save.

                          MARLINS 4, GIANTS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Jorge Alfaro had a career-high four hits and Miami handed San Francisco its seventh consecutive loss.

San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner (3-5) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

Brandon Belt hit his eighth home run of the season and drove in both runs for the Giants.

Marlins starter Pablo Lopez allowed four hits and one run in six innings. Nick Anderson (2-2) pitched a scoreless seventh while Sergio Romo escaped the ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances.

                          TIGERS 4, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Brandon Dixon hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning to lead Detroit past Baltimore.

The Tigers took two of the three games and won their first road series since April 1-3 against the Yankees.

Orioles reliever Mychal Givens allowed a solo homer to John Hicks that tied the game 2-2 in the eighth.

Nicholas Castellanos walked to lead off the ninth and Dixon followed with a two-run shot off Branden Kline (1-2).

Nick Ramirez (1-0) didn't allow a hit over three innings of relief. Shane Greene gave up a two-out double to Stevie Wilkerson in the ninth but still picked up his 18th save.

Keon Broxton got his second homer for Baltimore.

Rookie left-hander John Means allowed one run and three hits with a season-high seven strikeouts and no walks over six innings for the Orioles, who have lost 13 of 16.

                          RAYS 4, BLUE JAYS 3, 11 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Willy Adames delivered a long single against a five-man infield in the 11th inning, driving in the winning run as Tampa Bay beat Toronto.

Adames' hit came off Justin Shafrer (0-1), who walked two and allowed a single by Avisail Garcia. With one out and the infield jammed with fielders, Adames drove a ball to deep center field.

Diego Castillo (1-3) got the win after pitching the 11th for the Rays, who have won five straight.

Tampa Bay banged out 14 hits; Garcia and Tommy Pham each had three.

The Blue Jays have lost seven of eight. Toronto had 12 hits, but went 2 for 16 with men in scoring position. Toronto had had four hits off Blake Snell's first 10 pitches of the game, including a two-run homer by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

The game drew a crowd of 6,166, 380 more than Tuesday night's crowd of 5,786, the smallest in franchise history.

CHICAGO (AP) - Six innings after being beaned with a pitch from Kansas City starter Glenn Sparkman, Tim Anderson doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth, lifting Chicago over Kansas City.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                              13) One important thing in baseball now is for your starting pitchers to go deeper into games, to take stress off your bullpen. Over the course of a 162-game schedule, you can wear out your bullpen if they get used too much— after all, the starting pitchers are the better pitchers.

So far this season, Angels have only had 10 games where their starter went 6+ innings, but they use the opener a decent amount. John Means lasted six innings Wednesday; it was only the 11th game that Baltimore’s starters lasted 6+ innings

                              12) Pirates 7, Reds 2— These teams don’t like each other; since 2014, 72 Pirates have been hit by Cincinnati pitchers, 64 Reds have been hit by Pittsburgh hurlers. Six players were hit in the 5-4 Pirates’ win Wednesday.

Eugenio Suarez got drilled on the hand in 8th inning; x-rays came back negative, but Suarez had some words for pitcher Clay Holmes on his way to first base.

                              11) Cubs starting pitchers gave up 6+ runs four games in a row Saturday-Tuesday, first time they’ve done that since August of 2006.

                              10) Foul poles at Safeco Field in Seattle are 92 feet high. In case you were wondering.

                              9) Toronto will host a college basketball tripleheader Nov 16;
                              — Tennessee-Washington
                              — Buffalo-Harvard
                              — Rutgers-St Bonaventure

                              8) College basketball transfer portal:
                              — Coppin State transfer Justin Steers bolts to Rider.

                              7) Baseball stuff:
                              — Astros put SS Carlos Correa (broken rib) on IL.

                              6) Houston now has Altuve, Springer, Correa, Diaz all on the IL. Tough times for their training staff. Correa got hurt during a home massage; he broke a rib getting massaged.

                              5) Top five starting pitchers, if you bet on all their starts:
                              1. Lucas Giolito CWS (8-2) +$855
                              2. Clayton Kershaw LA (8-0) +$800
                              3. Jordan Lyles Pitt (8-2) +$777
                              4. Matt Shoemaker Tor (5-0) +$673
                              5. Jose Berrios Minn (9-2) +$671

                              4) Seven of Notre Dame’s football opponents this fall have a bye week the week before they play the Fighting Irish, first time that has happened to anyone in the last 30 years.

                              3) Former Bengals’ coach Marvin Lewis has joined Arizona State’s football staff as a special advisor to head coach Herm Edwards. Too bad; Lewis was good on TV doing AAF games and would’ve been a solid TV analyst for NFL games.

                              2) Blue Jays’ CF Jonathan Davis made one of the best catches you’ll ever see to end the first inning in Tampa Bay last night- it saved two runs, cost Avisail Garcia two RBI.

                              1) Random thing I learned today: singer Ariana Grande is allergic to tomatoes- she cancelled two shows after having an allergic reaction this week. No pizza for her.

                              • LEADING OFF: Netting under scrutiny again, Red Sox vs Yanks
                                May 29, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

                                INJURED FAN

Protective netting at ballparks is again under scrutiny after a young girl was struck in Houston by a foul ball. Albert Almora Jr. of the Chicago Cubs hit a line drive into the stands down the third base line and almost immediately put his hands on his head in horror. The girl who got hit was picked up by a man who appeared to be with her, and he dashed up the stairs not long after she was struck. The Astros said the fan was taken to a hospital, but did not disclose any further details. A photo taken by The Associated Press showed the girl apparently conscious and crying as she was whisked away and nearby fans looked on.

Like all major league stadiums, Minute Maid Park has netting to protect fans near the field from foul balls. On the third base side in Houston, it extends to the end of the visiting team's dugout. The girl was sitting in what looked to be the third or fourth row about 10 feet past where the netting ends. Following recommendations from Major League Baseball, by the start of the 2018 season all 30 teams had expanded their protective netting to at least the far ends of the dugouts after several fans were injured by foul balls in 2017.

                                EAST TO WEST

Japanese stars Shohei Ohtani and Yusei Kikuchi are set to square off for the first time in the major leagues when the Mariners host the Angels. Ohtani and Kikuchi attended the same high school, though at different times, and they only faced each other twice in Japan. Kikuchi, Seattle's rookie left-hander, struck out Ohtani twice in two at-bats in 2013, and Ohtani got two hits and whiffed once against Kikuchi during a game in 2017. First pitch in Seattle is set for 11:10 a.m. Tokyo time.

                                OLD RIVALS

The first-place New York Yankees have won eight straight series heading into a four-game set against AL East rival Boston. Chris Sale (1-6, 4.19 ERA) pitches the opener for the Red Sox, who make their second visit to Yankee Stadium this season after dropping both games in mid-April. New York left-hander J.A. Happ (4-3, 5.09) is 8-4 against the Red Sox in the regular season.

                                OUCH!

The banged-up Houston Astros get a day off to rest after their latest injury. Already missing fellow stars Jose Altuve and George Springer, the AL West leaders expect to be without shortstop Carlos Correa for four to six weeks after he says he fractured a rib during a massage at home. ''To sustain an injury in such an unusual way makes it even more frustrating,'' the 2015 AL Rookie of the Year said in a statement issued through the team. Altuve is out indefinitely after experiencing fatigue and soreness in his surgically repaired right leg. Utility infielder Aledmys Diaz, catcher Max Stassi and right-hander Collin McHugh are also on the injured list.

                                NOT-SO-HOT TICKET

The Rays begin a four-game series against major league-leading Minnesota, and Tampa Bay is hoping fans actually show up to watch. Tropicana Field hosted a franchise record-low crowd of 5,786 on Tuesday, then drew 6,166 on Wednesday against Toronto. Attendance has been an issue for years, but the numbers are especially jarring with Tampa Bay among the majors' best teams. Rays President Brian Auld issued a statement Wednesday, saying ''we appreciate the support of our fans, and we believe that St. Petersburg, Tampa and the entire Tampa Bay region will rally around this exciting and compelling Rays team.''
