  • Pastrnak, Bruins beat Blue Jackets 4-3 for 3-2 series lead
    May 4, 2019
    ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

BOSTON (AP) David Pastrnak took control of the game, and then he took over the postgame news conference from linemate and Game 5 co-star Brad Marchand.

After scoring twice, including the tiebreaking goal with 1:28 left, Pastrnak noticed that the man known as a ''Little Ball of Hate'' was getting a little salty about the questions surrounding their line's lack of production earlier in the playoffs.

''I'll take this,'' Pastrnak said with a smile, ''Marchy's a bit crispy tonight.''

One game after the Bruins' top line combined for five points, Pastrnak, Marchand and Patrice Bergeron scored three goals and totaled six points in Game 5 on Saturday night to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 and give Boston a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Pastrnak flipped a cross-ice pass from Marchand into the goal to cap a wild third period, and Tuukka Rask stopped 33 shots for the Bruins. Marchand had a goal and two assists, and David Krejci also scored for Boston.

''They break through the other night and now they're feeling good about themselves,'' Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. ''They're dominant when they're on. And when they're feeling it, it's a tall task for the other team.''

Sergei Bobrovsky made 32 saves for the Blue Jackets, who need a win in Game 6 on Monday night back in Columbus to force the series back to Boston for a decisive seventh game on Wednesday.

The winner will advance to the Eastern Conference finals to face the Carolina Hurricanes, who swept the New York Islanders in their series.

''Things happen for a reason. I truly believe that,'' Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. ''We'll be back here for Game 7.''

Asked what gives him that confidence, he said: ''Because we will.''

When the comments were relayed to Marchand and Pastrnak, they declined to take the bait.

With Hall of Famer Bobby Orr greeting the team before the game and then watching from a box, Rask got some help from the post when Matt Duchene stretched out to try to tip the tying goal in with less than a minute remaining and Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky off for an extra skater.

In all, six goals were scored in the third, four during a 3 1/2-minute span that turned Boston's 2-0 lead into a 3-3 tie.

    SECOND EFFORT

The Bruins led 1-0 after one period and took a 2-0 lead early in the third when Connor Clifton's crossing pass came through the crease to Marchand and he one-timed it toward the upper right corner. Bobrovsky stretched out his glove to block it, but the effort caused him to fall forward onto the ice.

Before he could right himself Marchand had corralled the rebound and shot again at the same spot - this time finding the net.

    TORTS BEING TORTS

Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella was short with his answers in the postgame news conference, cutting one reporter off by saying: ''Don't ask stupid questions right now, guys. Ask me some questions that mean something.''

After praising his players' energy, he said, ''We have to make plays, too.''

    GOAL BARRAGE

With about 10 minutes left in the third, Jones flipped one toward the crease and it deflected off Matt Grzelcyk's stick and Rask's pads to sneak inside the post. It took more than three minutes to review - and no view of the puck crossing the line was shown to the TD Garden crowd - but the goal was confirmed.

Just 43 seconds later, Pastrnak wristed the puck in from the left circle to restore Boston's 2-goal lead. Fifty-one seconds after that, the Blue Jackets cut it to 3-2 on Ryan Dzingel's goal and less than two minutes after that they tied it on a slapshot from the high slot by Dean Kukan.

''I thought we bounced back well from that call. Scored then next goal. Thought we had it under control,'' Cassidy said. ''Clearly we didn't.''

NOTES: Krejci needs five more points in the postseason to reach 100 in his career. He would be the fifth Bruins player to reach the milestone. ... Bruins forward Noel Acciari was scratched with an undisclosed injury. He was a game-time decision and was replaced by Chris Wagner. ... Columbus was without Riley Nash, who also missed Game 4. ... Columbus signed third-round draft pick goalie Daniil Tarasov to a three-year, entry level contract.

    UP NEXT

The Blue Jackets return home for Game 6. They are 3-1 there so far in the postseason. Boston is 3-2 on the road in the 2019 playoffs.

    • Hertl scores 2 to lead Sharks past Avalanche 2-1 in Game 5
      May 4, 2019
      ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Tomas Hertl scored his second goal of the game with 13:34 remaining in the third period and the San Jose Sharks went on to beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 in Game 5 on Saturday night to take a 3-2 lead in their Western Conference semifinal series.

Hertl tied the game with a power-play goal in the final minute of the second period and then delivered the go-ahead score early in the third for his first two goals of the series after recording six in the first round.

Martin Jones made 21 saves as San Jose held Colorado star Nathan MacKinnon to one shot on goal and ended his points streak at eight games.

The Sharks will look to clinch the series in Game 6 on Monday night in Colorado.

Tyson Jost scored the lone goal for the Avalanche, who were on their heels for most of the night. Philipp Grubauer made 37 saves.

Hertl was the beneficiary of sustained offensive pressure for his tiebreaking goal early in the third. Joonas Donskoi made a deft stickhandling move to get the puck to Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who put a shot on net. Hertl was parked in front and was able to knock in the rebounds to the delight of the home fans.

The cheers only grew louder at the next break in play when injured captain Joe Pavelski came out to the tunnel to wave a towel for the appreciative fans. Pavelski hadn't been seen at the Shark Tank since his bloody concussion in Game 7 of the first round against Vegas that helped spark an epic third-period rally from three goals down.

Pavelski resumed skating earlier this week and the Sharks are hopeful of getting him back on the ice if they can remain alive for a bit longer.

Jones did his best to make that possible when he preserved the one-goal lead with strong play in the net, stopping Tyson Barrie twice at point-blank range.

The Sharks came out with far more energy than they had in the Game 4 loss in Colorado, putting eight of the first nine shots on net and appearing to take a 1-0 lead on Kevin Labanc's shot from the slot. But trailing referee Tim Peel was signaling for a high stick on Timo Meier before the puck went in the net, negating the goal.

Both goalies then came up with big saves late in a physical period that featured plenty of hits and a few scrums. Jones robbed Matt Nieto on one end and Grubauer made two tough stops on the power play against Hertl.

The Sharks didn't let up in the second and were outshooting the Avalanche 27-13 just after killing back-to-back penalties only to give up the first goal of the game on an unfortunate bounce. Jones stopped J.T. Compher off the rush and Brent Burns tried to clear the rebound from in front but knocked it off Jost and into the net for a goal instead.

That sapped some energy out of the crowd that was brought back a couple of minutes later when Hertl deflected Logan Couture's shot from the top circle for a power-play goal with 19.4 seconds left. That ended a scoring drought of 100:10 for San Jose in the series.

NOTES: Donskoi returned to San Jose's lineup after missing the past five games with an undisclosed injury. Lukas Radil was scratched. ... Avalanche F Matt Calvert (upper body) was scratched for the second time in three games. Sven Andrighetto returned to the lineup. ...

      • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Since 2001, the longest on-base streaks in MLB:

        63— Orlando Cabrera

        57— Barry Bonds

        56— Ryan Klesko

        53— Alex Rodriguez

        52— Shin-Soo Choo, Kevin Millar

        50— Gary Sheffield

        **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

        13) Rockets 126, Warriors 121 OT— Houston’s bench was +29 in 62:00; starting guards Harden/Gordon were 12-27 on the arc, combined for 71 points. Rockets were +20 on the boards.

Durant scored 46 in a losing cause; Curry was 7-23 from floor. Golden State’s bench took a total of six shots the whole game. Warriors still lead series, 2-1.

        12) Portland 140, Denver 137, 4OT’s (Friday night)

        — Will Barton scored 22 points for Denver; he didn’t score in the first half.
        — Nikola Jokic played 65:00, the most ever by a 7-footer in a playoff game.
        — Kanter played 56:00, Lillard 58:00, McCollum 60:00 for Portland.
        — Portland was 24-28 on the foul line; Denver 14-20.
        — Denver’s bench was -21 in 84:00; Portland’s was -2 in 75:00.
        — Rodney Hood’s 3-pointer with 0:17.8 left was the game-winner.
        — Game 4 is Sunday night, fairly quick turnaround in the playoffs.

        11) Miami Marlins fired president of business operations Chip Bowers this week, because it is his fault that Derek Jeter is doing a cruddy job running the franchise.

No one goes to the games, because the team is dreadful; not that many people went when they had the best outfield in baseball (Jeter traded them all away).

        10) Friday night in Cincinnati, Giants trailed 8-0 after three innings; from 1957 to 2018, teams trailing by exactly eight runs entering the 4th inning were 6-412.

Giants won 12-11 in 11 innings, so make that 7-412.

        9) Dodgers 7, Padres 6— LA wins for second night in a row in last inning; since the start of the 2011 season, Dodgers are 101-51 against San Diego.

        8) Brewers 4, Mets 3 (18)— Mets scored a run in top of 18th, then they walked three batters in row in bottom of 18th, and Ryan Braun’s 6th hit of the game sent the locals home happy.

        7) Baseball stuff:
        — New York put P James Paxton (knee) on the IL.
        — Pirates put P Jameson Taillon (elbow) on IL.
        — Nationals put OF Juan Soto (back) on IL.
        — Reds cut OF Matt Kemp, ate $15.5M in salary they owe him.
        — Phillies DFA’d OF Aaron Altherr.

        6) From Elias: Colorado’s Tyler Anderson is the first pitcher in 100+ years to give up 5+ earned runs while pitching five or fewer innings in each of his first five starts of the season. He also got sent to AAA Saturday.

        5) Good news/bad news week for Monty Williams:
Good news: He got hired this week as head coach of the Phoenix Suns.

Bad news: Phoenix Suns are owned by Robert Sarver, a meddling owner whose team has made the playoffs once in 11 years (2010) since they stupidly let Mike D’Antoni leave town.

        4) Chicago Bears had eight kickers in for tryouts this week; at the end of practice, with the whole team watching, each kicker tried a 43-yard FG, the length of the FG Chicago missed in their loss to the Eagles in the playoffs in January.

The eight kickers combined to go 2-8 on their FG tries. No bueno.

        3) NBA shooters get fouled on only 1.66% of their 3-point shots; James Harden gets fouled on 11.5% of his 3-point shots. Big difference.

        2) Red Sox 15, White Sox 2— Boston had 10 consecutive hits in third inning, one short of the MLB record (Colorado in 2010).

        1) Congrats to KL Wheat, who cleaned up big-time with the Kentucky Derby Saturday; he turned a five-figure profit for the day, which is damn impressive.

                • STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                  STREAKING

Zach Davis, Milwaukee Brewers (3-0, 1.38 ERA, $224):
Davies has looked good this year with an unbeaten record and very low ERA but a few things stand out when compared to other top pitchers: His WHIP of 1.32 and BAA of .250. Is Davies fools gold? It might take a few more games to find out, fortunately for him he shouldn't be tested too much on Sunday as the Brewers take on a middling Mets offense.

                  SLUMPING

Drew Smyly, Texas Rangers (0-2, 7.80 ERA, $-400):
You gotta feel bad for Smyly because making it back to form after Tommy John surgery is beyond tough. In four starts this year Smyly has a WHIP of 1.93 and a BAA of .297. He's made it past the third inning in only one of his four starts. He'll try to turn things around on Sunday against a Blue Jays lineup that hits just .230 and scores just 3.97 runs per game. Despite his struggles the Rangers are -135 favorites.

                  3 STRIKES

                  BACK TO THE UNDER?

Despite hitting the Over in each of their last two games, the Cincinnati Reds remain the best Under bet in the bigs going 9-23 O/U. Today they are expected to start ace Luis Castillo and his 1.45 ERA against San Francisco. The Reds are 11-1 to the Under in Castillo's last 12 starts.

                  UNFAIR FIGHT

There will be a bit of pitching mismatch when the Astros face the Angels. The Stros will give the ball to seven-time All-Star Justin Verlander, who comes in with a 4-1 record and 2.45 ERA. The Angels will counter with Matt Harvey and his 6.54 ERA through four starts. Houston is 21-5 in Verlander's last 26 road starts. The Astros are -230 favorites and even taking them on the runline only pays out at -144.

                  DON'T FADE THE OVER

Yankees right-hander Domingo German is having a terrific season going 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA but that doesn't necessarily mean you should back the Under for the Yankees game vs the Twins. The Yankees are 6-2 to the Over in German's last eight starts and the Yankees are 8-2 O/U in their last 10 games while the Twins are 8-2 O/U in their previous ten on the road. The Over has also cashed in seven of the last eight meetings between these two teams in New York.

                      • LEADING OFF: Cubs on win streak, Mariners on losing skid
                        May 4, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        A CUBBIN' DRUBBIN'

Javier Baez and the Cubs look to finish off a three-game sweep of the Cardinals at Wrigley Field. After a 2-7 start that had some fans wondering what was wrong with the Cubbies, a win over St. Louis would put them in the NL Central lead.

''The first 10 games of the season, it was everybody talking about us,'' said Baez, who hit a go-ahead homer Saturday in Chicago's sixth straight victory. ''And now, where's everybody?''

Lefty Jose Quintana, who's 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in his last four starts, goes against Adam Wainwright, who's won his last two starts for the Cards.

                        SEATTLE SKID

Despite keeping up their home run barrage, the Mariners have lost six in a row. After starting out the season 13-2, they've dropped 15 of their last 20 games.

Edwin Encarnacion, Daniel Vogelbach, Tim Beckham and Dylan Moore homered Saturday in a 5-4 loss at Cleveland. Seattle leads the majors with 65 homers.

Rookie Erik Swanson (0-3, 6.62 ERA) tries again for his first major league win when he starts against the Indians.

                        WELCOME BACK

Michael Pineda makes his first start at Yankee Stadium since an elbow injury in 2017 brought his time with New York to a close. Pineda (2-2, 6.21) had Tommy John surgery, became a free agent and signed a two-year deal that offseason with Minnesota, returning to the mound this season after missing all of 2018. The right-hander was 31-31 with a 4.14 ERA in 89 starts from 2014-17 with New York. First pitch was moved from 1:05 p.m. ET to 4:05 p.m. ET due to poor weather forecasts.

                        MISS YA

Jameson Taillon's surgically repaired right elbow is intact. That's about the only good news for the Pittsburgh ace, who will be shut down for at least a month after the pain he'd been dealing with off and on since spring training was diagnosed as a flexor tendon strain.

The Pirates put Taillon on the 10-day injured list Saturday after he complained of lingering pain following a victory over Texas earlier in the week. The 27-year-old is 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in seven starts this season. He's the second member of Pittsburgh's rotation to go on the injured list in the last week. Chris Archer is dealing with inflammation in his right thumb.

                        QUICK TURNAROUND

After the Milwaukee Brewers outlasted the New York Mets 4-3 in 18 innings on Saturday night in the longest game in Miller Park history, the teams will be back at it Sunday afternoon.

Ryan Braun won it with his career-high sixth hit of the game, a two-run single. Both teams used eight pitchers and all of their position players, so fresh arms and legs might be in short supply.

Jason Vargas (1-1) is scheduled to start for the Mets, who are looking to avoid being swept in the three-game series by the Brewers, who will start Zach Davies (3-0).

CINCINNATI (AP) The Reds have released injured outfielder Matt Kemp just over four months after acquiring the 2018 All-Star from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

                            Cincinnati announced the move Saturday.

Kemp hit .200 with one homer and five RBIs before Cincinnati placed him on the injured list April 23 with a broken left rib. Kemp was injured colliding with an outfield wall in San Diego.

The 34-year-old was among four players acquired from Los Angeles in a seven-player trade in December along with outfielder Yasiel Puig, infielder Kyle Farmer and left-hander Alex Wood. Kemp is in the final season of a $160 million, eight-year contract.

The Reds also optioned OF Scott Schebler to Triple-A Louisville and recalled LHP Cody Reed from Louisville. Schebler was hitting .123 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 30 games and had lost his starting job to top prospect Nick Senzel, who made his major league debut Friday.

A day after the New York Mets released him, catcher Travis d'Arnaud thanked the team's fans on social media Saturday afternoon.

"It's been an amazing journey to be a Met. All the highs and the lows have made me into the person I am today," d'Arnaud posted. "Thank you for welcoming a California kid into your city and treating me like family. I hope nothing but the best for the organization, staff, fans, and most importantly my teammates. Thank you for everything. I will forever be grateful."

The Mets designated him for assignment last Sunday.

Coming back from Tommy John surgery, the 30-year-old veteran hit .087 in 10 games with just two singles and two RBIs in 25 plate appearances.

Since making his debut with the Mets in 2013, d'Arnaud batted .242 with 47 homers and 164 RBIs in 407 career games.

A first-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2007, d'Arnaud was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009 and then dealt to the Mets in 2012 in the same trade that landed All-Star pitcher Noah Syndergaard in exchange for pitcher R.A. Dickey.

He was playing this season on a one-year, $3.5 million contract.
